How I fixed chipped chrome bezel !! - Galaxy Note 3 General

I bought a Note 3 not so long ago quite cheap because of the fact that the phone had been dropped a few times and the bezel being plastic took a lot of the damage ( Pics below )
The screen was still almost perfect apart from one small scratch on the bottom left but that will be semi hidden when i receive a glass screen protector in the post.
Any way the bezel really bothered me as I always keep my phone in as perfect condition when I own them so it really frustrated me to see how someone could treat a phone like they had, As the chrome had gone through to the white plastic underneath in a few places I decided to use my little friend ( Sandpaper and create a white bezel ) But instead I got something in between the 2 of having chrome still and white in the bezel.
Its very hard to explain so just look for yourself
Although I couldn't mask the dent on the top right completely it is now improved massively.
Your feedback would be greatly desired.

I think you've done a good job there. Probably an irrelevant thought now but could you have bought a non functioning phone off the bay and used it as a donor for yours?

I know you can buy the midframe cheap online but theres a lot of process involved having to remove the display and everything. I thought id try the diy version first before having to dismantle the phone

Could you post pics from a few more angles? Thanks.
Great work, btw.

I fixed mine with silver nailpolish...
Little tip for people who are afraid of the silver on the bezel eroding: Clear nailpolish. It's a trick us women do with those cheap fake silver rings, if you put clear nailpolish over it, it erodes a lot less.

OHH ill have to give that one a go, im sure my sister will understand its for a good cause. The glass screen protector came today and has been installed and has completely covered up all of the small surface scratches apart from the deep one but even that doesn't look as bad anymore.
Thanks for the feedback omigo's

that is awesome job, how did you protect the other parts of the phone from the sand paper ?

Great job mate, love to see people improvising and having a go at D.I.Y mods like this.

I cut up 400 grit sandpaper into small squares about the size of my finger. and run it it over the entire bezel at first and it didnt seem to touch the middle section so im not sure how lol. i then folded it when going around the home and volume button to ensure I got all of it. Put something over the display to stop it scratching of course
Might be tempted to see what the bezel looks like all white?

Wow! Awesome excellent job! Well done! Impressive!

Custom Back Cover

So the other day at work i got bored. Saw a post another forum where someone decided to chrome polish their Sensation 4G well i took it upon myself to try the same thing. Sanded and polished then added the green color to the lettering. What do you all think?
I like the green.
what did you use for paint and what kind of brush did you use?
At work(Auto Shop) i used this 3M kit thats for polishing plastic headlamps. Used an 800 grit air sander first then moved to a 1000 grit and then to 3000 grit. Then used some touch up paint from my tool box. Its a Snap-On color (Ratpack green). Im pretty happy with the out come.
Man I would pay for stuff like this. To bad no one ever though of manufacturing custom or different back covers for the G2/Desire Z
EDIT: where did you get the android sticker for the back of the screen portion? I've been looking everywhere for one like it

Thanks man, i thought about it. But i think since the phone is a lil old by today standards, probably have a hard time selling them. Plus idk what would be a fair price to ask for something like this. I do have another friend that wants me to do one for hime. Was thinking maybe just $20

Now I want to order that sticker to thank you.

I just used a regular brush and painted over the letters, let it dry for like an hour in the sun and then used a razor blade to scrap the excess off.

Sandpaper? I think sanding it off will scratch the grey part too? I'm afraid to sand it off as this will result to bad scratches which is more noticeable.
Hard as ass to do, but still doable
Just to say it's possible to change the chrome middle frame bezel.
You can take a look on Ebay : part 170734635327
It's a pretty painfull process that tooks some time considering that part is trapped between the screen and the rest of the phone.
You had to be pretty cautious while removing it, because buttons are attached to it and easily breakable.
If anyone really interests into doing it, I could explain it better and provided pics of what's left of it after removal

Thanks for your help but I managed to sand off the chrome part. I'd rather sand it off than open as I don't have the knowledge to open it and even if I have read something about it, I won't take the risks. Here's the result of what I did.

That looks pretty nice. If I ever damage the chrome strip, or if the chrome look itself starts to fade away I think i'll sand it down to grey as well. Good topic thanks!
Looks very good. But I think it would be even great if you could paint it black piano. Or for white SGS users, in clear white.

I've already dropped the phone a few times and 99% of the damage was done to the bezel. I was thinking about replacing it but this is a much simpler (and maybe even better looking) solution.
well, some time ago i tried to paint frame with auto spray paint can. there is no use to do such work - scratches shown again after two weeks of active use.

sandpaper away the bezel! get rid of the scratches once and for all. or maybe sandpaper it first only paint it?

Rubber feet to protect the glass and unmuffled sound

So I wanted to protect the back glass with a screen protector since I would generally be laying the phone down on it's back. I got one of those "apply when wet" guards and it went on ok. The only problem is, the material is so soft, it basically makes a seal on a flat table which cuts off the speaker completely. I only noticed when I was missing text messages, that the sound was significantly reduced from laying it down.
So I got these rubber feet So far, so good. I was afraid they would come right off, but they are on there pretty good. If they do come off, I still have 92 left! I might remove my back screen protector, if these work out. They aren't too hard to get used to when holding, but they certainly don't look the greatest. I attached some pics.

OP's idea is amazing! Agreed that the circular ones look ugly, but say something like two thin strips along the length of the phone, or two horizontal ones along the top and bottom curves?
How does one go about getting custom shapes like that?

agree, dont really like the idea of those rubber nubs, but I would think something a little less aggressive or strips running down the sides or tops. I like the idea, just not as pronounced.
I thought of this some time ago and actually sourced some 3M manufactured ones in transparent polyurethane with an acrylic adhesive. They make them as small as 6.4mm X 1.9mm. I have not found anywhere that sells them in anything less than bulk so I didn't order any. I am waiting to try a few more cases before I decide whether to do this, but am pretty happy with the diztronic TPU for now. My Poetic hardback is supposed to be here tomorrow. I am guessing that if the Poetic works well, and the phone will fit in it with the 3M pads on, I may go for it.
i bet you could find something at michaels.
It's not something I'd do, because how the device looks is a major selling point for me and this doesn't look great.
Not saying it's bad though, it's actually a very clever idea. I do worry about the back getting scratched and the muffled speaker is annoying, so nice job man

I have some extra feet from an old laptop that were supposed to go in the four corners of the screen so the screen wouldn't press against your keyboard. They're maybe 0.5cm wide. Definitely been thinking about doing this myself.
However, I got the bumper instead. Which is now making me think I might plastidip the backside of it so it becomes uber grippy.

Honestly, if you were gong to do something like this, I would suggest a few things.
Go to a cabinetry or hardware store, to look for the bumpers. You would be surprised at what they have.
A better solution, which I was thinking of is dynamat, the non aluminum version.
Take a sheet of plain paper, use a pencil to make an exact tracing of the back of the phone. Use the rubbing method to make sure you know the exact edges.
Overlay onto the dynamat, and use an exact knife to cut out your new back, and add sound channels. But it seems like a lot of work though.

[Q] Note3 N9005 - is the Plastic Rim Around the Phone Replaceble?

I recently bought a Note 3 N9005. The Phone is awesome and have been functioning very well, except the Battery drain when playing games on it but I can live with that.
Couple of days back the phone accidentally slipped from my Hand and fell on the Ground . When i picked it up the upper right corner of the phone was chipped and i saw that the Metallic Looking rim for Note 3 is not actually metal but Metal like looking plastic . Now i am left with a Amazing phone with a very sore look. Every time i look at the phone i first look at that chip which makes me very upset
Can anyone please let me know is there any way I can replace the Metal Rim? Is the Metal Rim attached to the LCD Screen? Will I be able to purchase the Metal Rim and replace it with mine?
Pleaseee let me know as that chipped part on my phone is bothering me very much and I have searched the Internet for answers but did not find any. I hope to find them here.
Thanks in Advance.
I don't know about replacing the original part, but a surely cheaper and easier way would be to buy and use a metal bumper. Cheap, easy to install, real metal. There were some threads about it in the Note 3 Accessories subforum.
The plasic metal looking rim is part of the screen's frame, you can only replace it if you replace the whole screen.
So i think it's best if you leave it like that or you must have a pretty big wallet you want to empt, new screen is like $250 a least.
I dont know how hardcore technicians live in ur part of the world but there in Poland replacing S4 frame is pretty much doable so its possible also with note3. Price should be under $100.
Thanks for the response guys...I was hoping to hear a different answer guess i just have to live with that or change to another phone. Thanks for the help. btw i am from India.
What timing! I've only just chipped the frame aswell?. I've maybe dropped my phone 5 times(3 on tile & 2 on lino) and luckly each time, it has fallen screen up.
TBH replacing the whole frame was my last consideration. At first I wanted to paint it, but now I'm just going to get a cover. I'll post a pic of the chip when I get the time. Mine's on the Faux metal rim and not the glass. How bad is yours? Maybe post a pic?
In the end it doesn't matter how little it is, it still drives you nuts?. Take a look at the accessories thread and you'll see most, if not all, of the cases cover the rim around the front. This is would be the easiest solution in my mind.

Yeah, i think i will have to consider the Metal bumper for now to cover up that Chip. its driving me crazy every time i look at my phone. yes, I have used iPhone 4 in the past and i have dropped it several times but had no visible scratches on the phone. But I dropped my Note3 once and Boom!! Scar for life :crying: attaching the picture...
In your situation I would mask the screen very accurately at that corner use epoxy glue to build the missing area up (as epoxy dries it can be shaped & cut to shape with a razor blade) finalise the shape BEFORE its fully cured then allow to cure for a day then paint with cosmetic nail paint close to chrome as you can.

Don't forget to mask the rest of the phone while doing it as Epoxy can easily get on things I've noticed & is very hard to remove.
I put a larger than needed blob on & then don't start cutting to shape until it's the consistency of toffee.
Use the the blade in a sawing action.
Good luck.

How much time should I give it until i cut it into shape? Thanks Again.
It is an expensive device so because different makes/types of glue dry at different speeds the trick is to do a test run with the glue in the same environment as you will be doing the repair & monitor/time the glue to see how long the "window" for manipulation of it.
Araldite is good & for a rough idea it may be from about 20mins after applying to an hour. But do a test run. (Buy good glue, i tried some pound shop epoxy last year & it was worse than useless).

I Hate This Stupid Phone

It just has so many flaws, I don't even know where to begin. I'm sure many others will agree with me.
The build quality is just too good. It is so fast, I can't even see any animations. I need lag in my browser, or it just feels fake. The battery life lasts way too long for me to be able to break in the charger that came with it. The back is so smooth, I think I'm going to drop it. People are always wanting to see my phone, because it "looks so cool", that I can never play with it myself.

Actually the phone being smooth is a flaw for me. I always feel like I'm going to drop It but I'd rather keep metal, so I'll live with it. maybe HTC could have put some sort of coating over the metal to make it less smooth.

I agree. I have mine in a Otterbox case, if I remove the case I have trouble holding the phone. I think any coating would hurt the appearance of the phone but there are clear plastic slip-on cases that might not look too bad?
The Otterbox is just plain FUGLY but I need the protection and the grip!

I have a clear gel case on mine and imo it completes the phone. The metal finish is to slick...i'd drop it for sure. With the gel case its 100% easier to grip, its not slippery and doesnt add bulk to the phone. Also with it being clear you can still see the beautiful design of this beast. I cant say a darn thing bad about this phone

There's a few test videos on YouTube, drop tests from 4ft/7ft/10ft, one of the tests was between the M7 and M8 and the other was between the M8, the G S5 and the iPhone 5S, the M8 got the best results in both test, only finally cracking at the 10ft mark in the latter video, not cracking at all in the M7/M8 video. Also another video shows scratch tests with a key, butchers knife, pocket knife and a hammer. Though it was hard to see in the video, the guy recording said there was next-to-no, if not NO scratches on the device, even after hitting it pretty hard with a hammer, though he used the back of the hammer and finally cracked it.
I think it's safe to say this phone is near indestructible, not saying you shouldn't still baby it but you can feel better about an accident that may happen if you drop it or what not, not to mention the 6 month screen crack insurance from HTC Advantage
I can't seem to find a good case that'll protect and look cool, any advice?

I ordered one of these cases even though I like to run my phones naked. I figured I'd order a nice looking case just in case I'm going to be doing something that requires the protection. I thought it looked pretty nice, but that's just my opinion.

I also like how this one lets the phone's natural beauty show through.

I had the clear case with the black perimeter which I purchased with the phone at Big Red's store. I'm not sure, but I think the way the case's rubber sides was such that while taking off the case to access the microsd card I may have bent the metal near the volume buttons. That troubled me and forced me to put that case away. Big Red, thankfully, replaced my handset about a week later (I bought mine at 1:15 p.m. on 3/25/14), and I put a crystal clear TPU case on it which lets the Arctic Silver finish shine through.
I'm actually going to get my second replacement today... First had a small nick in the upper left corner, now this one has a strange bump in the center below the bottom speaker, resulting in warped metal. It wasn't there when I got it, but after some use it showed up. I guess be careful about applying pressure to the bottom corners of the device?
I feel like I'm being nitpicky, but idk... These are pretty glaring IMO.
Hopefully thirds a charm.

Beware of clear TPU: it will turn yellow over time... At least matte finish ones will.
I think diztronic makes the best slim and protective TPU cases. I recently got a translucent gray for my gray metal M8 and it's been great so far. Can't see all of the device's beauty, but it is see through.

I had a clear TPU but while minimal, it provided very little protection. I went back to the UAG. Great protection without a major additional bulk of the Otterbox defender.

Haha. When I saw the title I was like either this person is crazy or its defective. Only flaw on this phone is the camera in my opinion.

Why do people keep saying camera is bad?!! I took 2 photos, one with note3, and one with m8. U tell me which one looks better.....

And from the note 3.....
Hmmm...they both look fuzzy to me? Didn't look like that before I uploaded Them here.
Anyways, the point is, it's a good camera. It's one of my favorite features of this phone! I compared to note 3, and honestly unless your cropping them, they look about the same.
