[Q] Need help installing custom recovery - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So, my phone has 4.3 CML1 on it.
I am running an unlocked bootloader but the stock recovery. And I am UNROOTED.
So, I can't boot into recovery, and I can't flash custom recovery via odin (get auth failed).
Also, I don't think I can ODIN to stock firmware since the download counter > 0.
Any ideas? Ideally I would like it to be unlocked, custom recovery. But if the best I can do is just get it stock firmware that is fine (selling the device on eBay)

Yea, it is sort of a long story. It was my device, and I unlocked it and ran CyanogenMod ROM on it. When I gave it to my wife she wanted stock. I could only do that by restring stock recovery and locking bootloader. But the locked bootloader never took, it reverted.
So, here I am. 4.3, unlocked bootloader, Unrooted, stock ROM and stock recovery.
Any ideas?

Any reason adb flash of custom recovery wouldn't work? Even if it doesn't stick, might be enough to get rooted, or might just revert?

You can not unlock the bootloader if you are on the VRUCML1 or VRUCNC1 TW 4.3 otas.
You can only use Saferoot to get root access and Safestrap to flash other TW VRUCML1 based roms. You need to be on VRUCML1 to use Saferoot.

Ok. Your bootloader is not unlockable, as I said previously.
Since you can access download mode are you also able to boot into the stock rom? If not, do these steps to get your phone back into working order. If you're planning on selling the phone, just Odin flash VRUCML1 tar and you should be all good. You can not boot into recovery because of whatever attempts you did to unlock the bootloader, which is not possible on TW 4.3 OTAs. I assure you, you have a locked bootloader.
Basically, there is no and (likely will not be) a bootloader exploit for 4.3+. Here is some general info on the status of 4.3 and root/roms.

It boots into stock just fine. When it boots the first splash screen says SAMSUNG Custom and shows an unlock symbol.

Aight, everything for obtaining root has been laid out already. The presence of the lock symbol on boot only symbolizes that there was some modification that wasn't reset before the phone was last restored to stock. It's nothing more than that, although it is harmless. It is not an indication of an unlocked bootloader. If it was, you would not receive that error with Odin when flashing a custom recovery (assuming it was meant for Verizon S3 of course). With Safestrap installed, only TouchWiz 4.3 VRUCML1 roms can be flashed. This means no AOSP, at all.
If you just want to see about getting a working stock recovery again, try Odin flashing the VRUCML1 tar. This will wipe the phone again and should restore the stock recovery. It may also get rid of the lock symbol but that's probably beyond the scope of what can be done once on the official 4.3 OTAs.

Download this full stock firmware http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23134718111254196 then use Odin to flash, once done take the OTA and it should be fine. BTW, once upgrade to 4.3 your bootloader will be locked permanently meaning you can't flash custom firmware (rom/kernel/recovery), the only thing you can do is root with saferoot. can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758

If you still want to install custom firmware then DO NOT TAKE THE 4.3 OTA UPGRADE. If you decided to flash custom rom then after flash stock MF1, you need to unlock bootloader, root, flash recovery then flash custom rom (most custom rom already rooted so you probably don't need to root). Your phone status will be CUSTOM.

Haviing only used Odin when I initially rooted my phone a year ago, I need to ask some specifics on your instructions.
1. Do I boot the phone into Download mode when flashing?
2. Do I flash it by selecting the PDA box and selecting the file there?
3. This will make my phone basically "out of the box" and back to stock recovery, correct?
Thanks in advance.

Going back to Stock

Hi all,
I am trying to revert my S3 currently on 4.1.2 with baseband I535VRBLK3 back to locked/unrooted stock. The guides I am finding either have broken links or are outdated. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!
i should mention: the stock roms that I have found so far have failed when I try using odin to flash them

Yes, all three files will format the phone's internal storage and return you to fresh, out of the box factory setup. It will be as if the phone is being activated for the first time.
This may be dumb question, but if I have VRUCNC1 now, could I flash VRBMF1 to allow me to root the phone? My final goal is to be able to use Clock Work Recovery and custom ROM.
Thanks

No you cannot flash back to VRBMF1 and root. You can ODIN flash back to VRUCML1 and root, but you will still not be able to use clock work recovery. Saferoot and safestrap recovery will be your only options.

Bricked Recovery

Greetings,
I recently rooted my Verizon 4.4.2 S3 using TowelRoot. (SCH-I535) Afterward I attempted to flash TWRP using ODIN. I kept getting an error message when flashing. I think tried TWRP Manager. I selected the proper IMG and flashed. It said flash successful. When I enter recovery I receive a LARGE yellow caution triangle with the message, "System Software not Authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest VW store for help."
I attempted to flash the factory recovery (Verizon-SCH-I535-StockRecovery.tar) using ODIN. It says the flash is successful but I still receive the same error message. My flash counter is at zero. Any idea how I can either get my factory Recovery back or get a functional recovery?
Thanks so much!
The bootloader is locked on 4.4.2 which makes having a custom recovery impossible. Try to flash the full NE1 image in ODIN. Here's the link:

Thanks. I ended up using the Verizon repair tool which actually did a pretty good job. It put 4.4.2 back on unfortunetly. After that it was Towel Root then TiBu restore. So is safe strap the only way around the locked bootloader? Can I JTAG?

Yes safestrap is the only way around. Unfortunately you can only flash NE1 based ROMs via safestrap and there aren't any custom ones out yet that I know of. I believe the devs need kernel source released before whipping up some updated ROMs with the new base.
Regarding JTAG the guys at mobiletechvideos apparently found a way to downgrade the s3 to the 4.1.2 firmware which would allow you to unlock your bootloader again. I have not heard of anyone on here that has tried that service, though.

back to stock help

A customer brought his phone and he tried to flash on his own, he did not unlock the bootloader. I've tried to flash without unlocking the bootloader but have no luck getting back to stock. Since the phone will not boot into a usable menu I cannot unlock the bootloader. I have done a lot of research and cannot find a flawless way to do this. Is there anyone that has a direct way to fix this. Photos attached are when the phone is booted up normally, and in download mode. Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, the bootloader cannot be unlocked on your customer's Verizon S3. Based on the Dropbox photos of Download mode, I'd wager that phone was on KitKat 4.4.2 VRUDNE1 before they attempted to modify it. That software comes with a locked bootloader that has not been unlocked. VRUDNE1 4.4.2 is the only software that can be flashed on the phone using Odin. Flash the VRUDNE1 tar in the PDA section of Odin and it *should* allow you to boot into the rom after it has flashed the firmware.
What have you and also the customer attempted to do to the phone?
Edit: I believe Odin 3.07 can be used, if not then you would need a newer version of Odin for Windows computers.
thank you very much, that got me back to stock at least. I appreciate the help! Next I need to wait for the 4.4.2 bootloader unlock if it ever comes out. Thanks again!

To be realistic, there won't be a bootloader unlock method on this phone any time soon. The phone has been bootloader locked since 2013 OTAs without an unlock tool found. The only thing you can do is use Safestrap which hijacks the boot process and allows the user to dual boot another VRUDNE1 4.4.2 TouchWiz rom. Our version of Safestrap requires the stock VRUDNE1 4.4.2 kernel in order to boot another VRUDNE1 rom. They also need to flash VRUDNE1 kernel modules in order to have working wifi as well. All the info you need can be found here in our sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639337
This means no AOSP roms, no custom kernels, no using roms on 4.3 or earlier, and as stated before no bootloader unlock.

As long as your not on ML1 or NE1 basebands both which are locked bootloaders. By the sounds of it your bootloader is unlocked. There was only 4.1.2 for the android version, it then went to 4.3. If you want to keep the unlocked bootloader I wouldn't flash any stock firmware with the risk of locking it up

What is your ultimate goal, to simply be running "stock" (like) software ? If so, but you want to remain rooted and with an unlocked bootloader, use one of the rooted, "stock" ROMs from here. For example, AllianceROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1973982), MOAR (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2231050), CleanROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832070), etc.

If your phone is rooted and/or has an unlocked bootloader, anything related to "flashing stock" should be avoided like the plague. Yes, on the S3 you can safely flash stock firmware with no fear, but far, far, far too many make the mistake of flashing an update the moment it's made available and quickly regret it.
So here's my question: say I wanted a stock look but instead of flashing official stock firmware I flashed any of the custom "stock" roms you have listed. That would be about as safe as flashing any custom rom? Is that correct?
