[Q] GPS never really gets fixed - Micromax A110

Of all the roms that I've tried, most boasted of a fast GPS lock. It was anything but. Heck, even my old Samsung Galaxy Y gets faster GPS lock. Is it a software problem or a hardware one? Also, does this phone even include a compass? When I DO finally get a lock or use my wifi, I notice that the phone has no sense of direction. Is there an alternative?
I'm never buying from Micromax again.

First of all, Trying new ROM's involves risk! Do not blame Micromax, it's you who made the modifications! if you don't like the ROM's, Go back to Stock JB 4.1! Problem is with your knowledge, and unawareness, not Hardware nor Software.
As for your GPS issue, there are various patches for GPS, you can try that, I'm running UltrimSLIM ROM and having no such problem whatsoever, after flashing a GPS patch!
And our phone does not include compass so there will be no 'Sense of direction'!

I think it was implied that I moved from a stock ROM none of which have fixed the GPS. Its not that I don't like the custom ROMs. I love some of them. I've been trying many to see which one is able to get a lock as fast as most other phones do. Hence, my question.
Is there a problem with the drivers or any part of the software that the devs haven't modded yet? I'm not a very advanced coder so I can't really help yet. Yes, I've flashed patches. To no avail. I have to wait for over 2 minutes with turbo GPS 2 installed.
Another big question is: Why did micromax release a very buggy firmware and not take steps to fix it? 4.1 has memory issues AND GPS lock problem. 4.0 was alright with memory but not GPS. Who knows how 4.4 will be once they FINALLY release it?

Ah, that's what troubling me too!! Read lots of news, posts still no sight of KK. Some fake Firmwares are out there and that's all! And yes, Memory Issues were present in stock firmware!!
But I have to admit that I used Stock JB for 2-3 months and GPS was working fine for me! I even downloaded Sygic Maps that time and since, it became my favorite!
Why don't you try that app and also see YGPS from Engg. mode to see if you are getting a weak signal or no signal at all!

I shall try that then. Thanks

GPS Problem

I'm using CM7 Eaglesblood 2.8 with the T15 Trinity kernel.
My problem is that my GPS won't turn on after my phone has been on for a while. I'm not 100% sure after what exactly the GPS stops working, but so far every day I try to use it after my phone has been on for a day, this error occurs.
It works once I reboot, but I don't want to have to reboot my phone every time I wish to use my GPS.
Some details:
-the GPS is enabled, but the icon in the notification bar doesn't turn on when I am atttempting to use GPS
-I've attempted using a series of apps that use GPS and this behavior is consistent throughout all of them
-I've experienced the same issue on the newest CM7 Hellfire ROM with the faux SV and OC/UV 048 kernels which makes me think this is an issue with CM7 or the G2X
-I've used GPS status and it produced no results
-I've searched this error through both your forum search and Google. Google produced some results, but none of them helped
So my question, or rather request, is to know whether or not I'm the only one having this problem. I use my GPS a lot, so this is very annoying. Also if someone was having this problem, I'd like to know how they fixed it (and also if they didn't)
GPS is properly fixed in 21y firmware the stock 2.3.4 release, but that means no custom roms.

Hmm okay, thanks. Well in any case, I have a custom ROM which I rather use than the stock. Is there a solution available for CM7 users?
Possibly unrelated, but yesterday my GPS started becoming inaccurate as well as malfunctional. I haven't changed anything, so I'm thinking it's similar to when data is slow some days. If that's the case, it'll fix itself over time.
The original problem still remains, however. Right now I'm under the impression that this is a problem that doesn't have a solution.
I had nothing but trouble with GPS on my G2X. I even exchanged the phone twice in an attempt to get one with a decent GPS. All the symptoms you describe would occur on my phone. Sometimes I'd have to do multiple reboots to get it working again. Since I updated the baseband last week it's been working much, much better.
I miss running CM, and I hope that devs will find a way to make custom ROMs work with the new baseband, but I'd rather have a working phone than a custom ROM. In addition to the GPS issue, my random lock-ups haven't appeared yet either. Granted I haven't had this update on my phone a full week yet, so I can't be certain that it's fixed all the problems yet.

[Q] GPS always drops signal after ~5 mins of navigation

A while ago I rooted my AT&T HTC Inspire and put on Cyanogenmod 7.2.0, and things are all working quite well except the GPS. However, extensive googling and I've not been able to find something that exactly matches my symptoms. It always camps quickly, that's no problem. When it is connected, things seem fine and fast. However, each time I start driving navigation, after about 5 mins it loses the GPS signal and won't recover on its own. It will recover if I turn off the GPS and turn it back on. At that point we're back to normal but eventually it will happen again and it's quite annoying and unsafe to have to toggle the radio to keep navigation going.
I have tried several combinations of the RILs/Radio software found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1106324
However, there is never a behavior change. It is beginning to make me think maybe the problem is not with my radio software. Is there any kind of middleware as part of the ROM which may be causing this? Can anyone think of a way to troubleshoot bad hardware? I wonder if it is possible my baseband hardware was damaged through the modding process?
Thanks!

I believe that this is just a bug with the Navigation app on Cyanogenmod 7.x ROMs. It happened to me on every CM7 ROM I ran and I remember reading that it was the Navigation app's fault. But it's a normal bug, nothing should be damaged hardware-wise unless this happens on Sense or ICS ROMs that don't have documented cases of this issue.

This is a common problem on AOSP ICS roms as well. I have read it is fixed on aospx, but the rom was too vanilla for me to keep it long enough to test.
As for Gingerbread, I can tell you that Navigation works perfectly on all ClearDroid roms as well as Virtuous Unity through 2.35, I can't remember using Nav on Gingerbeast.

From my experience, GPS works perfectly on aospx.

Canadian Skyrocket GPS issue (i727r)

The GPS takes 5 minutes to lock, and it does it at 1600 meters (un)accuracy.
It behaves like this no matter what rom i try (Sky, Slim, CM9/10, Embryo etc), except for stock Rogers ICS.
The agps patch and other gps patches on XDA didn't do anything.
When i first bought it, it had stock Rogers ICS and GPS worked perfectly, never mind the fact that i live in EU.
Then i tried custom roms and it started to funk around and has been doing as long as i run a custom rom.
Today i installed Rogers ICS as a last resort and suddenly the GPS locks in seconds and with great accuracy too (9 meters).
And so the question, what the hell is causing this?
OR
How do i make the GPS work with the custom roms?
I have been running custom ROM's since a day after I got my Skyrocket, and the AGPS patch has never failed to work for me. I have been running CM10 for pretty much the last 4+ months, and GPS always works. Not sure what your issue might be.
You can flash agps patch from Boombah's aroma installer. Always works for me

I'm not sure either.. The phone is canadian with a Rogers brand on battery cover. When i install a stock AT&T rom the GPS more or less dies.
Any other rom and the GPS dies. Stock Rogers ICS rom and voila works like a clockwork.
And it doesn't react at all to any GPS patch, and i've tried like 10 different ones. aGPS is not new to me, i've successfully used it on other phones. But for some reason it doesn't do anything for my Skyrocket.

Thanks i'll try that, just don't see how Aroma is going to help if it's the same patch i've tried earlier.
On the other hand, with ghouly issues like this who knows what might help and what won't ?
Worst case scenario is that i'll be stuck with Rogers FW if i want working GPS, which is acceptable with some tweaks especially the Droid Razr M launcher

Nope, it's always turned on.
If SW doesn't solve/change anything - where might the problem be? Yes, that's right, it's probably in HW!
Check your GPS antenna contacts (antenna is inside the inner plastic, the one you see when you open back cover and remove the battery). Bend them a bit and clean their contact points to make sure they contact well.
If your phone is still within warranty or the above doesn't help - replace it.

Hi Jack_R1
Software does indeed solve everything. In short: stock rogers ics rom = perfect gps, custom rom/stock at&t rom= no gps.
Oops. Guess I skipped some lines reading the OP - returned and found your line talking about it. Sorry about that.
Did you try reinstalling custom ROMs after you got quick lock on stock ROM, to test that the issue remains?
I'd suggest a couple of things:
1. Try installing AT&T ICS ROM for testing. If it also gives you a good lock - you'll have better reference point.
2. Look at the APN you use in Rogers' ROM and in other ROMs. If you're using automatic ones - they might be different and include GPS-related stuff (type "supl").
3. Copy stock gps.conf from Rojers and try using it on custom ROMs.
4. Download FasterFix and try choosing different NTP pools.
5. Download GPS Status & Toolbox, see what exactly happens when you run it, describe here. What satellites are you seeing (numbers), how much time after running it, in which condition, etc.

1 The AT&T roms didn't give me an adequate lock, until the JB updates were leaked & released.
2 I'm always using automatic APN's but they don't have any GPS info.
Haven't tried #3..
4 FasterFix didn't help.
5 GPS Status shows 4-7 satellites and only 2-3 locks with horrible accuracy. The thing is now i get perfect locks with any ROMs.. I could've disallowed Google Services to use GPS as I might've confused it with Google Search & Ads wanting my location..
Thanks for your help :good:

[Q] GPS and JB Roms issues

I am using AOKP rom, and my GPS is not working properly. The particular issue, however, is somewhat different from what I could find on this forum. In my case, the GPS cannot keep lock on the satellites for more than a couple of seconds. It can lock to 7-10 satellites quite quickly, but then it loses lock on them and then has to spend several seconds relocking. This cycle goes on while the GPS is being used. So, I can find my current position without a problem, but the lack of permanent lock makes it very hard to use navigation.
I have tried many "fixes" mostly dealing with gps.conf modification, but none of them could solve my short-lived lock problem. When I reverted back to stock Gingerbread, the GPS could keep lock without a problem, so I could track my continuous movements within 3 meters accuracy. I tried using gps.conf from Gingerbread in AOKP, but the problem was still there. So, I can only assume that the problem lies with the kernel itself.
So, my question is what 4.1.2 Jelly Bean kernel would you suggest me to try? I really like AOKP rom, but as far as kernel goes, I am open to any suggestions. I really want to be able to use the navigation again I would appreciate any inputs.

As development on 4.1.2 is dead, you could try a 4.3 rom since theres a few to try. If not i would simply revert back to gb. Idk how accurate you need it to be, but i use my navigation on carbon 4.3 without a hitch.
Well, anything you can suggest from 4.3 that would be as stable as AOKP 4.1.2? I have been using it for almost a year, so I can't really go back to GB. If it was not this GPS issue, I would be using my current 4.1.2 until I get a new phone. Just like I will be using Ubuntu 12.04 until I need to buy a new laptop

These 4.3 ROMs are moving towards stable at tremendous speeds. Take your pick
I'm not saying they have no bugs at all, but I've been using 4.3 daily for about a month now with no serious issues

Problems with service and GPS after flashing.

I recently got my phone S-off'd and I flashed LineageOS 14.1 on it. Everything seems to work except my mobile data says "No Service" most of the time (even though it still works all of the time) and the GPS has become terrible.
When I try using Google Maps, it rarely updates my position and it always says im facing north. Waze straight up tells me I have no GPS reception.
So what did I do wrong? I'm fairly new to the whole flashing scene but I did at least try to search my problem. I came up with a bunch of "radio" version problems but that was tough to google because it kept linking me to actual FM radio apps.
specs:
Verizon HTC One M8
ROM: LineageOS 14.1
Android version 7.1.1
Radio version: 1.14.20.0930
Any help is appreciated

i havent taken the N plunge yet, so i am not sure if this applies. for the gps issue, try flashing a sense rom, let it fully boot then use maps or a gps tool like gps test. give it a few mins to lock on. then flash your aosp rom, or restore a nand maybe. ive had to do that in the past with mine. while its on the sense rom, compare signal, aosp seems to get lower readings, but i honestly think its just the way the oem and carriers code their s/w. if the signal seems a lot better it may just be something in the rom, could try a diff N one or even MM for better comparison

Do I have to full wipe my phone if I want to switch between roms? I will try switching back to N after flashing a sense rom but if that doesn't work I may as well just stay on a sense based MM rom. Speaking of which, know any good ones? It's kind of heard to like Sense imo.

It's been a while but I finally got around to doing this. I flashed to a sense rom where the GPS and service was working. I opened Google Maps to turn on the gps then shut the phone off with the app in the foreground. Now I reflashed back to Android Nougat and everything works as it is supposed to!
Although I did flash an entirely new ROM for nougat so that also might be the reason. It's still CM based and not Sense, so I don't think that was the reason.
