[Q] What's the button combinations to boot into recovery or fastboot? - Verizon HTC One (M8)

I was able to root, install TWRP, and permanent root using adb commands to get into fastboot and recovery. What's the proper key press combo because I cannot figure this out?

1. FIRST of all, make sure that Fast Boot is off (Settings --> Power --> Fast Boot (uncheck).
2. Power off the unit.
3. While holding the volume button DOWN, press the power button. If you get the splash screen, you'll have to power off again and try again.
4. Hold both buttons for a second or two until you feel the vibration, then release the volume down button, the bootloader screen will come up.
5. Select hboot (if not already selected). Use volume button to scroll down to recovery. Press power. You will then see the splash screen (with red lettering unless you flashed an alternate hboot) and the unit will boot to recovery.
Do yourself a favor and either figure out a way to get the Advanced Power dialogue into your ROM, or download Quickboot which will do the same thing.

Oh Jebus! None of the instructions I found mentioned turning off Fast Boot. I was sitting here last night for like 10 minutes trying to get into fastboot before I was like, "adb reboot fastboot"

If you have tritium back-up you can go to menu select reboot to recovery.

See hgoldner's reply; very good walkthrough.
If you want to install a mod to get the Advanced Power Menu (APM) with additional reboot options, I used this.
Good luck. :good:

not sure if this will work as he says he's on stock. unless it's stock rooted by attn1 that is.
otherwise, if you have the android sdk and/or adb installed, you can just pass open a command prompt in the folder with adb and connect your phone over usb (make sure debugging mode is enabled via settings --> apps --> development). then in the command prompt, simply type adb reboot recovery.
hope tihs helps
Even when you use ROM manager to boot into recovery how are you going to use recovery without your volume buttons working?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
As long as the power (enter) button works, you ate okay. The menu softkey will scroll down and the return will take you back one menu.
Edit: are okay

Tried that and all you get is the rom manager picture in the middle of the screen.
What version has those options in it ?
Have found a program in Desire HD development.
You can change your recovery.

Yes with adb command line, in the PC typing "adb reboot recovery", this method working very fine too if your phone stuck in boot loop and the volume keys not working, for this problem the steps are:
1. remove battery
2. insert battery and put the cover
3. conect the usb cable to pc and phone
4. waiting 10 seconds and with adb command line in the PC typing "adb reboot recovery" and the phone restart in recovery mode and here you navigate with the touch buttons home= up menu=down search=enter

{SOLVED!} Can't enter fastboot mode after JB update

First off, my tf700 is rooted and unlocked. Now, after I flashed the US JB update through clockwork recovery, I lost recovery as expected. But what was unexpected was that i lost recovery completely. I installed TWRP through the goo app and now i have a working recovery. Here is the kicker, when i hold vol down and power I am brought the the screen that has several icons. They are RCK, the Android, USB icon(fastboot), and wipe data. I can only select the RCK option no matter how i try to select the other icons. both vol up and vol down select the highlighted icon.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Imo,your recovery was still there after updating to Jelly Bean, but it was different from ICS (Volume down + Power get you directly to those icons) so you ended up installing TWRP.However,if your OS still starts you could try installing this recovery and maybe will help get fastboot back, even if i find it odd that recovery is working but fastboot not.

Unless I'm reading the OP of the linked thread wrong, don't you need fastboot to flash that recovery in the first place? I'm also having issues getting fastboot to work.

You can also use ADB to install a recovery.
it's not that fastboot isn't working. it's just that I can't highlight it to enable it. both Vol up and Vol down select the highlighted item. which in my case is RCK. I can't select anything other then that. I'll try the ADB commands when I get home.
thanks for getting back to me
SOLVED!
Well, I managed to fix my fastboot issues. All i had to do was downgrade to the stock .30 software then update back to the 10.4.4.16 OTA. At that point, I was able to access the fastboot mode and was able to flash the latest clockwork without issue. TOTAL PITA but everything works fine. Now time to root.

Real pain having to start over again....
UPDATE: Before you go the long route...... I left it for a while and later tried again and figured out that you can only scroll through the icons using the LEFT (volume down) button. The right button is the SELECT button, so just hit the vol-down again till you are on the fastboot icon, them the vol-up button!

JB does not have the USB icon. You are already in a fastboot mode when you boot into the bootloader. If you look at the fine prints in the upper left corner, you will see that you are in the fastboot mode..

Win8 is a little tricky. You may not have a fastboot driver for your device. You could search around to see if you can find a driver for win8.. I think that sbdags has a win8 driver somewhere on his original post. Naked driver may work but you have to test it out for yourself because I don't have win8 to test, sorry... I will let you know if I can find the driver for win8.. What do you want to do with your device? You may be abe to achieve what you need with adb too, just a thought...

You can't. Either your power button needs to be working or you phone needs to actually boot up to send it into recovery
i can get the phone to boot...i just cant get into recovery
i can get to the bootloader screen i just cant select..recovery
What I meant by boot was to actually boot up the os. Not just make it to the bootloader.
so basically im ****ed??
Unless you get the power button to work you are stuck.
bump bump...anyone got any ideas!?!?!
adb reboot recovery ? Won't that work ?
Once you get into recovery you can use the bottom four buttons to navigate through recovery. If I am not mistaken Menu to scroll up, Home button to scroll down, Search to select and Back to go to the previous menu.
Anyways you can always flash from command line using fastboot.
When your power button is broke you can't scroll and select anything in fastboot. It freezes.
You can't adb reboot recovery if the phone doesn't boot up the os. Can't use any fastboot commands either cause its stuck.
He is screwed. Getting power button to work/unstick whatever you want to call it is only way.

If I am not mistaken he can boot into OS, He can go to bootloader but he just can't select Recovery because of the broken power button.
So using adb and fastboot shouldn't be a problem at all. As far CW recovery is concerned you can navigate without using power button as well

For possible future use, you can install an app called Rebooter, which can boot your phone right into recovery.

[Q] 'Dead' Android when trying to boot to fastboot

Using the method of holding volume down and power, I can get to the recovery menu - but it automagically selects the RCK option and I get the dead droid with red triangle. Am I borked? I couldn't NvFlash since I was updated to the latest JB (thought it would fix things).
I'm not sure if I'm just doing things wrong, borked, or need to keep trying. Any advice is appreciated.

Can you still boot into Android, and are you rooted? This could be a chance to find out if mmcblk0p3 is also used on the TF700 for bootloader commands.

You have to hold vol down to get to the boot menu, but then use vol up to select the usb option and vol down to select. No matter how quickly I react by letting go of vol down, it automagically selects RCK. Unable to get to USB.

Not rooted, unfortunately. I hadn't heard of voodoo root and figured it would be just as easy to root after the upgrade to JB. So I'm actually trying to root now. I'm trying to get CWM on. Hoping I can do so through command prompt (i.e. adb and fastboot.exe in windows 7 cmd prompt) but adb so far hasn't recognized my device.
Even using adb reboot bootloader it still automatically is selecting the RCK. What the f.....

CANNOT enter recovery mode proper

The issue: When booting I get the "bad key" boot text which hangs for about 10 seconds before going to splash.
When doing power button + volume up, the bad key hangs for so long that holding down power button just SHUTS THE PHONE OFF.
I can do power button + volume down to enter bootloader, and then enter recovery mode from there, but when I do that I get NO COMMAND
Ive also tried with adb
adb reboot recovery
same thing NO COMMAND
Everything that I google about NO COMMAND comes back with "oh just do power button + volume up duh" and each time I read that as a solution it makes me a little bit more angry.

Ive been following this guide to root my moto e6 and everything has been fine so far, but im stuck trying to install magisk. Magisk manager has already been installed, and I believe I have installed magisk. But I cannot boot into proper recovery to use it.
About to give up, hopefully someone can help

to see if that would help. No change. Cant boot into recovery mode proper.

bad key and/or N/A is just the phone saying it has an unlocked bootloader.
NO COMMAND when entering Recovery, yes, google is right. When you see NO COMMAND, press and HOLD the power button and TAP the volume up key. You should see at the top, Android Recovery and a bunch of options below. If you don't see this, your recovery partition was probably modified/corrupt. Flash the original recovery.img from a stock rom. I don't think there's a working E6 TWRP recovery image yet.
If you still haven't figured this out I have a possible fix. I found that upon first installing the magisk_patched.img from the guide you linked, everything booted up fine and magisk and root were working. I however made the mistake of booting normally...somehow this affects the magisk boot function in the recovery and gives the no command screen. I just fastboot flash recovery magisk_patched.img again and booted straight into recovery and that fixed it again. Just make sure once you have root again to use a program that allows you to boot back into recovery again directly.
