Security policy updates... Hmmm.. - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have a notification bar notice of a 'security policy updates'...
Askjng me to download...
Not gonna do it...
Anyone else get this?
I cleared the notification and it came back.
Looking at it a bit more,
It appears as a shield with a swooping up arrow.
I was thinkjng it might be outlook, but I uninstalled outlook rightaway after new.
Looking thru titanium apps list, it kjnda looks like a blach&white knox shield.

That's the new KNOX 2.0 Updated that was announced yesterday but Samsung. Not sure if its safe to install and what not, but I wouldn't. I'd delete all traces of Knox if the tour rooted.

I froze 3 knox items in titanium and the update has not returned.

Sounds like just a standard security policy update. If you go to settings - system - security you can set whether you want the policy to update automatically or not. Mine is default set to automatically update over WiFi. It just did an update and no issues. Still have Knox 1.0 so didn't update.

Did the same I froze the apps you recomended on Titanium backup, don't trust Samsung, waiting for Chainfire to figure this out before I download anymore updates from Samsung!

Interesting that my other family members same rooted sprint gs5's have not had this 'update'.

From what I understand, Knox is only being offered on an Enterprise level (whatever that means) on the GS5.
Our peon level units won't be getting knoxious updates.
Even after rooting and doing custom recovery, there's no indication of any Knox bits being set or tripped.

[Q] Is there a way to NOT keep receiving the 'upgrade notifications'?

Hello - I have a stock rooted One S. I don't want to go thru the hassle of un-rooting, etc just to get the incremental upgrade T-Mobile pushed out a few weeks back.
However, over the past few days, I've had 3 separate notifications prompting me to do the upgrade (which won't work anyways because I am rooted). I then have to re-start the phone to get the notification out of my status bar.
Is there anything I can change on my phone to avoid getting these upgrade notifications (build.prop setting, etc)? I'd rather not deal with constant upgrade notifications if possible.

If you have Titanium Backup or similar app, you can delete/freeze DMClient app.
Thanks for the quick reply. Via 'Root Uninstaller Pro', I found:
DMC / HtcDMC.apk - version 4.0.22**************
Is that the one to disable? Any side-effects to freezing it?
I just got the One S a few days ago and is still trying to figure out the in and out of it. Usually all my other Android devices the DMClient is what handle FOTA.
Have to admit the One S is the first "branded" phone I've gotten in about 15 years.
Not to sure if the DMClient is what handle FOTA (I forgot to look before I flashed custom ROM).
I don't think HtcDMC is it. HtcDMC (Digital Media Controller).
have you not looked in settings>about>software updates? you should just be able to untick there to stop it looking.
Or have t-mobile hidden that option? (Im in the UK so i don't know these things...)

Well, that was easy! I have the US model - and it does have that checkbox option. Problem solved. Thanks guys.

Auto-lock feature taken away with latest gear manager update!

Are you one of the Gear owners who loved the "Auto-Lock" feature in the Gear Manager settings that enabled your connected phone to be unlocked when your watch was near it and then locked if it was too far away? Well Samsung has decided to take that awesome feature away with it's latest Gear Manager OS update. It's bad enough that I feel unsupported due to the lack of apps Tizen has (doesn't have) and now they're starting to take away features from their wearables? AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO IS PISSED ABOUT THIS?!
Has anyone else noticed this feature gone? I've talked to someone online who says he still has the Auto-Lock box showing up in his Gear Manager settings after the update.
Yes gone in addition to now only a sender text in the glance pop ups, used to get part of the message.
Useless Samsung.
What version is that update?
One of the things that bugs me is that you cannot choose to ignore an update, or at least I don't know how to, as the app refuses to work without updating.

From Samsung urgent update to samsung backup and restore Manager

Hi has anyone else recieved this pop up?
Stock note 5 no root. It shows up in my pull down status bar. If I don't hit accept the update or decline it goes away.
See picture.
Yes and i have also declined, it seems very fishy. I dont want to infect my note, i love this thing. Would love to know what it is
Installed it. No issues so far.
I got the same thing and installed it today. I also looked in the application manager and you can uninstall the update if you wish
It's just a software update for Samsung backup and restore. My guess is maybe getting ready for 6 to finally come.
I called my service provider and they said they see it on their devices in their office. But they told me I can contact Samsung for more information. I then called Samsung, the support guy had no idea what it was and said that they only know about the Lollipop update. Never had much luck with Samsung support, always seems pretty useless.
I'm getting the same pop up daily on my Edge Plus. It's not a software update through Android. It says it's from Galaxy. ???
I've also received this update. Haven't installed it yet.
Anyone received android 6 update yet? Still waiting on Sprint.
I installed it yesterday. I have seen no ill effects.
I have received this same notification. I have yet to install. When I navigate to Settings to locate Software Update, it says my device is up to date, yet I keep receiving the notification. Seems super fishy to me.
I've been getting this notification almost daily for about 2 weeks and have declined everytime also because it seems very "fishy". I can' t find any app called "Backup and Restore" on my phone and settings show all is up to date. I called Sprint. They didn't know. Suggested I call Samsung or do a system reboot (they had no clue). I called local Speint store with techs there and he wasn't familiar with it either. He asked if I could bring it in to show him. Haven't yet. I have the notification "pending" in background now. Maybe I'll take it today. At least I have Lookout Security installed so maybe that will help in case its malicious? Very wierd. Someone please post if you have specifics! Thanks!

Lost Hotspot and Tethering in Settings Menu

My phone was domestic unlocked. I was having a weird bug so I thought a software reinstall with Samsung Switch (PC) was a good idea...Worst decision I've made in 2016 so far! After the phone restarted, all Sprint apps were gone, and some others disabled like Facebook, Lookout and Instagram and the Hotspot and Tethering settings no longer appear. I went to a friend asking for some help: Various reinstalls with Odin yielded no results. GT idone needs root. A rooted phone is a no no for me as Banking apps and even Pokémon can't run. Factory resets and another "repair" with Samsung Switch are useless.
Where did the carrier apps went? Also, all the Sprint APNs no longer appear. Is there a NON ROOTED way of getting it back? We tried RTN, then reflashing with Odin with no results. I'm on the latest Marshmallow update (Came out yesterday)
Who is your carrier TELCEL?
Not sure what that is, actually I just look at your profile. What is your fw version?

Chrome Home Page changed

A few days ago out of the blue my homepage in Chrome was changed from https://www.google.com to http://portal.fly2tech.com/?channel=13#!/, without me doing so. So i ran a malware check with Malwarebytes and nothing, so better safe than sorry i start looking at apps, com.android.partnerbrowsercustomizations.example is showing as a normal app, whereas before it was a hidden system app. My phone is running stock MM 6.0.1 with Nov 2016 security patches. Not rooted with stock recovery. As a precaution I did a factory reset, and everything was fine then just about an hour ago it changed again, to the fly2tech portal as homepage, i went into apps and the com.android.partnerbrowsercustomizations.example program was showing again, i selected the three dot menu in upper right and clicked uninstall update, at which point i was prompted if i wanted to revert a system app to previous version, I clicked yes, and it disappeared from apps back to hidden system app. I uninstalled chrome just to make sure I was getting a clean copy and so far no more fly2tech portal. I have fired off a support request to Alcatel. I certainly hope they are not pushing this garbage out to customers. Or there is a vulnerability that needs fixed!!! A google search has indicated this has happened to one touch devices from all I have seen....
Anybody else having this problem??
oops, Clicking that link crashed a few apps on my Chrome. Weird how that could be an Alcatel thing.

It did it again, i rolled back system app, they have also pushed an update to their updater app, I have disabled automatic updating of system and system apps, hopefully it doesn't do it again. I called Alcatel support today, they didn't deny it was them, but they created a ticket and will get back with me.
So I just got a phone call from Alcatel support, they are investigating, the guy said they are in touch with the dept in charge of FOTA updates to see if its something they are pushing or if there is a vulnerability at play. At least they are interested enough to actually call me for details....
Interesting....
That's what is usurp my stock browser for over a month. I set homepage to google.com but it'salways changed autonomous to this portal thing. It's like some mw on Windows doing it's job. Weird.

At this point I'm convinced Alcatel is pushing the customization, via the system update, and not any malware.... But they have no right to choose my homepage. I have blocked automatic updates to system and system apps so I'm going to run a few days and see if that fixes it...
I'm not sure that is the case cause mine have been disabled long time before this happened...

Well the problem has not repeated itself, since disabling automatic system app updates. I'm still waiting to hear back from Alcatel USA. I find it hard to believe they would force a customization on a phone that is not subsidized, and I could be entirely wrong about it being them, regardless if it's them or not, I don't think I should be forced into using a portal that keeps resetting itself to the homepage. If it's Alcatel, they need to stop, if it's a security vulnerability I hope they patch it.
I doesn't make sense. I've checked my updates to found out that i freezed the update app in titanium backup prior this homepage changes.

Well i spoke too soon, it has happened again, i guess until I get an answer I'm, just going to have to keep uninstalling updates to com.android.partnerbrowsercustomizations.example. which really stinks. If it gets too bothersome I'll just get a new phone
Weird stuff. I'm looking towards note7r

So Alcatel wants to send me another Idol 3 and wants to analyze my current phone... I'm glad they are taking this seriously
I have just discovered the same thing on mine. I'm going to freeze com.android.partnerbrowsercustomizations.example in Titanium Backup, and see what happens.

I have to call back the rep from alcatel us support Tomorrow afternoon, they want to examine my phone, not sure how comfortable I am sending my phone back to them, I will remove as much sensitive info as I can, but don't want to strip it bare, I want them to get to the bottom of the problem, but not sure how invasive they will be, but if it helps to stop the problem I guess it's worth it.... They are going to send me another Idol 3 to use while they investigate.... I thought about just doing an OOB restore via Mobile Upgrade Q, but if it's a vulnerability eventually it will creep back up on me, I guess the best bet for all of us is to let Alcatel disect my phone and determine how they can plug it....
Alcatel can always pull your info anytime anywhere you have connection to internet, as google and app developers.. so don't trip you are already been examined.

It's not a "bug" it's intentional. I froze it with Titanium Backup then after a couple of days I removed it completely. No more homepage jacking.
Of course, you must be rooted to do this.

Ok so Alcatel is acknowledging the issue and has asked that I refrain from making any modifications to device, including restore via Mobile Upgrade Q. At this point im sure someone at TCL has dropped the bomb, but I'm getting the feeling even the US support team knows this isn't gonna fly. If they want to force it, then push your own browser, don't mess with Chrome, I like my settings just the way they are. I'm giving it another week tops, then I shall root and set up my phone where it can't be violated. I can see a phone company forcing customizations on subsidized phones, but not on an unlucked phone bought outright....
So looks like they stopped pushing it...
Should we reset the phone to factory then? can't they just send an update?
