How to use other lock types with foxfi still - Verizon Galaxy S 5 General

EDIT: Confirming that user Maphack the way he posted works !!!!!!
I ended up messing up my pin or password over and over... Like 50 times... Waiting for it to give me the option to recover using my email, but it never came. I used the correct pin but I found I was able to change my security and changed it back to fingerprint.
I don't believe I did anything else besides what I described above and I am no longer restricted to foxfi's original security reqs...

Most of you probably already know if you're tethering with the foxfi update on our phones, it makes you use a pin lock and you cannot use swipe or finger, but I found out today, that if you clear the credentials (under security) while you have the hotspot on, you can use other lockscreens, and the hotspot will still work (worked for me )

Worked how? When you tried to re-start Hotspot, it didn't make you reset the Lock/Cert?

I actually didn't try resetting yet before posting this, but yeah sadly it makes me do it again :/
but I still will keep this here because maybe someone can figure something out, that is really annoying.

The use of Credential Storage blocks use of any lock types other than PIN or Password.
There's no way around this without a custom ROM where these Android features have been altered or removed.

Can you go into Settings > Security and tell me if Credential Storage is still enabled after this?

Maphack's solution works and the credentials are saved and hotspot will still work. You da man Maphack.

So, after purposely entering the incorrect pin 50 times, you entered the correct pin, then went into settings and changed the security type? If I'm understanding correctly, you also still have to maintain some sort of security, not just swipe to unlock?

Perfect. So, after 50 incorrect entries, I started on the 51st. When I finished the 51st attempt, it took me to my homescreen for about 2 seconds then back to my lockscreen. I entered the correct pin and went to settings, lockscreen and security. I switched to swipe (no security) and it worked. I did have to open my 3rd party lockscreen app (SlideLock) to get it working but after that, everything is working great. I've toggled foxfi on and off several times and have NOT had to repeat the process.
I've not rebooted my device yet.

Survives reboots. Good to go.

Wish I had found this thread before Friday morning.
I installed FoxFi just to show a friend how it worked, I had used it for 3 years before they asked for a pincode.
I did not realize it was going to lock my S5's lockscreen and didn't write the pincode down.
After 10 attempts at unlocking the phone, the S5 did a reboot and erased everything back to OEM scratch factory defaults.
I am bookmarking this thread. many thanks for finding out how to get around that problem.

Mpahack, you da man! I just did this this morning at work while I had Play Music running.. It got slower and slower with each attempt to where the last attempt lasted about 7.5 seconds before it showed the pop-up. LOL, but it worked like a charm. Nice and easy! All the while, AC/DC was rockin' my ears! Rock on Dude! Much Thanks!

Confirming that the Maphack method works. Do not clear credentials prior to this or Foxfi will reinstall them, forcing you to do this all over again. Like I just found out...lol. Survived reboot as well.

But you can atleast make it difficult for them.
If the device is encrypted with bootloader locked, they can't do anything except wipe the phone, and they'll have to know how. However, you can purposefully break the USB port and use wireless charging only. So worse case is they wipe your phone but they can't get at your data, then you call up the carrier to have it's IMEI blacklisted, so thief is left with atleast a cripppled device.
But if not encrypt your data, then use stock recovery with locked bootloader and USB debuggin turned off, they can't get at the data anyway if you have a strong lockscreen and unlocking bootloader means full wipe. There might be a way to bruteforce or exploit a bug to bypass the lockscreen, but let's assume the user have an adequate password and Google patches any bugs. Also disable the power off/reset menu (it can be done). Then you can find the location of the device using Cerberus. With root, regular factory reseting will not remove Cerberus and if they removed the sim/turn radio off/change sim, Cerberus will report it.
Just keep your phone with you at all time and carry a magnum.
I just use Android Device Manager on all my devices. Luckily I haven't had to actually use it, but it's about time that Google implemented device manager. A little late in my opinion.

Not precise at all. It is good to create a general idea but if you want to get your phones back get cerberus.
I used Avast. The anti-theft option seems pretty decent. It buries itself in the OS and claims it's protected from factory resets. It has an option to remotely lock (which ALL anti-theft apps should have) but it also has the siren feature. If I activate it remotely, the siren sounds and the thief cannot shut it off while the phone is on.
Hopefully, I'll never need to use it but I do have it on all my devices.

Nexus 5 "Roaming" issue, Three UK

Hi All,
Been having issues with Nexus 5 now for a while and don't seem to be able to resolve it, originally my partner had the Nexus 5 from new since December 2013. She complained like hell about it so eventually I got in contact with Google and got them to agree to a new replacement device (I then kept the new one and she had my S4)
At numerous points through out the day the Nexus 5 while go into "roaming mode" (H+/4G logo replaced with R at the top) and the only way to get it out of Roaming mode is to go into Settings>More>Mobile Networks>Network Operators, from here to manually scan and then select auto again.
Google Play have sent me 3 replacement devices incase of a hardware issue but all 4 phones have had this issue now, my partners S4 and S5 dont suffer with the same issue and she is on Three aswell.
The one thing I have noticed is when I manually scan for networks Three comes up twice in the list, so maybe its an issue auto switching between then two?
Google keep trying to get me to run in safe mode, do factory resets etc but nothing works, I have now sent them a response today basically saying I've had enough and want to return the item so I can go out and buy a HTC One M8 (not holding my breath)
Nexus 5, Android 4.4.4 KTU84P on Three UK.
Anybody else had this? it seems to be Hardware and Network specific
Are you rooted if so what ROM?
I used to have it a lot but not for a long time now. Three UK also.

You should try a custom ROM. As mentioned I've not had this issue for ages. I think perhaps not since I moved to SlimKat. Maybe give it a try? Root isn't activated in it by default so won't affect those 2 apps.

Not saying it will solve the issue for you, but I can say i haven't had this issue for a long time (and I used to a lot with Three) so its at least worth a try.
I don't have any special settings set. There is only an option for national data roaming but when we roam, we only get voice from Orange anyway. 2G I think

I get this, but only in a low signal area.
I get this from time to time, on any phone I've used in the year I've been with Three (One M7, Nexus 5, One M8, Nexus 5). Usually fixes itself once back in a decent area

Installed Slimkat tonight using the following methord.
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Install CWM
3. Install Slimkat and Gapps
Now I'm not sure if its fixed the initial issue yet only a few days of testing will confirm that but I now have two more issues.
1. Even though I never rooted the phone, SkyGo and Barclays are saying its rooted and wont let me use them
2. The DPI is awful (very small) and it wont let me change it using an app because guess wot... I need root access

Possible Solution to Titanium Backup stuck at 0%

If you are having issues with Titanium Backup while you are restoring (if it stays at 0%), then try this.
Possible Solution to T.B:
1) Go to settings > General > About Phone > Software info
2) Press build number 7 times
3) Go to Go to settings > General > Developer options
4) ACTIVATE USB DEBUGGING MODE!
5) That's it. It shouldn't get stuck at 0% anymore
Hope it helps :good:

Same here, not working. I tried also the "Auto Indirect" mode in PREFERENCES / APP PROCESSING MODE of TB Pro. I did a new install of SuperSU. I did a full clean install of the system. Nothing works. I cannot restore my Apps anymore. The only way to restore the backup is to use the INTERACTIVE MODE, which doesn't allow batch processing but it works as workaround.

I've literally been pulling my hair out over the last 24hrs over this!
Flashed different ROMs, Restored my device to factory state, with no luck.
I've found a temporary fix for myself.
1)Settings--Google--Security and turn off verify apps.
2)Turn off verify apps over USB in developer settings.
3)Restore using Titanium.
4)Turn security settings back on.
It Seems google has beefed up their secuirity.

I was so pi$$$$$ed yesterday!! It just so happened that I was flashing a new ROM to my device yesterday (which I do waaaay too much, I think I have a problem lol) and suddenly wasn't able to restore anything through TiBU. I spent the better part of last night trying various things, all the while thinking that my device was seriously messed up this time!! Heh. I was kind of stressed. Just a tad. And I think I owe my wife some flowers after work today because she wasn't very happy with me for being on my phone all night, yelling and screaming and cussing... you get the idea I'm sure.
Anyway, this works in case anyone else needs confirmation. And for the record, I don't think this is an issue with TiBU because I even tried earlier builds. I agree with the others that it seems to have something to do with something Google implemented... Not very happy and seriously hope it's just a big oops that gets resolved soon. Either that, or TiBU gets updated to work-around the new security measures!

like bypassing the smart lock or prevent the google locked phone? if so just go to accounts on settings and go to google and then remove the account from the device. After that you can flash without remorse. :silly: . Although you can also flash with the google locked phone and still been able to bypass it.

Does Unlocked Pixel 2 perform entitlement check for tethering

I have a question for those of you getting the Pixel 2 (or 2 XL). I am on a VZW grandfathered plan and looking at getting the Pixel 2 or 2 XL. I am curious whether the unlocked version will perform the entitlement check or if the tethering works out of the box. It looks like the OG Unlocked Pixel does not perform the check and I just wanted to confirm before I make a final decision to buy from Google.
Thanks in advance!
Same plan as you, and unfortunately, Yes it does, and they finally updated the "you don't have a subscription" box from the old Anrdroid ICS colors.
We will have to wait until Magisk is available for it. (Only reason I need it these days).

I have the same plan as both of you and this is sad news. My phone is my main source of internet right now so this is a very important feature for me. Hopefully they get root and a ROM up and running before mine gets here on November 1 or it'll have to sit not being used until they do. That or I'll have to switch back and forth to my N6 every time I need internet

Just curious why you like Magisk over Superuser
Magisk over Superuser so I can use APay, also my office uses AirWatch for email and it won't connect if it detects root.
Soft reboot
I can confirm this method works: 1. Soft reboot, 2. Unlock phone, 3. Activate hotspots from notification bar and this will circumvent the entitlement check and tethering is working with my (new) Pixel 2 from Google store on Verizon sim, UDP Grandfathered plan.

Are you able to set up the SSID and security and stuff first, then let it fail at the check, then do your steps and have everything set up or is it an open network with a generic SSID?

I had to pull the sim to edit those fields, SSID.
What is "soft rebooting" and how do you do it?
I'm trying to replicate this on the pixel 2 xl.
Not sure why, but I can't get it to work on that device. I wait for it to boot up, and immediately, as soon as I can I dropped the scroll down box from the top and click on the tethering icon. However it then seems to stall for a second and I see the tethering icon flash on and flash off. About three seconds later it gives me the tethering provisioning check. I'm wondering if having a pin is what is holding me back? Everytime I reboot the device, it is asking for a pin. Any other thoughts, if you got it working on the regular pixel too I'm not sure why we can't get it on the XL

My guess is it's the pin. It looks like you need to get to the tethering icon and turn it on before the phone has a chance to connect to the network. Try turning off pin unlock and see if you can get to it faster.

Damn that sucks. I was hoping to hear other people having success with it before mine came in. Can apps like foxfi still be used? I haven't had to use a third party app in forever.

What you're doing sounds pretty much like the old phone info trick we used to use years ago. I don't know if it still works or not but it can't hurt to try. Open your dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*. Then choose phone information. You'll see a line on there that says mobile radio power. Turn it off and then turn on your hotspot. Then go back into the phone information thing and turn the radio back on. Like I said, I don't know if it works anymore but what you're trying to do is pretty much the same thing. Get the hotspot started before the radio starts. Who knows? Maybe this old trick still works.

Sometimes its the stupidest stuff that works. I just tried it thinking there's no way.
You literally just reboot the phone, once on lockscreen swipe down and activate. Worked for me. Wow.

That's awesome. Glad the Pixel 2 has a workaround! Just curious, do you have a PIN or any other kind of provision check?
Neither myself or others can get tethering working on the XL2

I have a pin and finger print set up. I can confirm that once you unlock the phone it will disable your tethering. So if you want to use it for now until a root method is available, you'll have to be comfortable with not using your phone while tethering.
Edit: Maybe it was fluke, I unlocked the phone and I'm still tethering whereas before it cut out. It didn't turn off, just data stopped working. That's good to know.

Bank app is forcing me into setting a PIN, how to bypass?

My bank app is forcing me into setting a PIN or security in lock screen, but I don't feel like setting it. Is there a way to bypass this or to fool the app into thinking I have the PIN set? My phone is rooted.

probally not since it may check serverside which might get you in trouble if they find your phone is rooted

My girl's phone is not rooted and the same app is asking for the same thing. I only added the information about my phone being rooted because it could help bypass the verification system.

No, I'm pretty sure they have it locked so that won't work.
Honestly, it's ridiculous to even want to try, you'd be giving anyone an open door to your money. You as the user could NEVER keep it anywhere even close to being as secure as it is designed to be. As a matter of fact, it's probably even illegal even if you did find a way. Or at least will get you blackballed by your bank, maybe even other banks.
Moral of the story? It's best to leave it alone and do yourself a favor and let it keep your stuff secure as it is supposed to do.

I'm not trying to bypass the bank app PIN. The bank app (which is passworded itself) is forcing me to set a PIN or pattern in my lock screen. I just don't feel like typing a password every time I use my phone.

I know exactly what you asked the first time, my answer remains the same.
You could set a fingerprint probably, if your device has fingerprint feature.
Or, some devices can be unlocked by voice using "ok Google"
You can try finding a way to get the banking app allow using one of those methods. It wouldn't remove the need for it, but it would make it easier.
