[Q] CarbonROM, Clean Installs, and App recovery - General Questions and Answers

So I'm on the gNex(toro) and searched but mostly found old threads (even the similar threads listed as I type this are from 2010). Wondering if there's anything new, sorry if these are repeats.
1. Is CarbonROM based on CM or do they pull some things from CM? I know Carbon has a changelog, but should I also follow CM's changelog for changes in CarbonROM?
2. I mostly dirty flash, but would like to clean flash more often if there's an easier way. Right now I factory reset, flash Carbon, GApps and kernel. Then Titanium from Play Store (and stop auto downloading) to restore apps so that I'm not downloading a couple GBs from the Play Store every time. Is there a better way? I'm using TWRP 2.7.0.0 if that helps.
Thanks.

CyanogenMod 10.1.0 Release
Tonight we are ending the Release Candidate phase and pushing CM 10.1.0 to general release.
The files will be landing on our servers as they complete the build process. The list of devices will be in line with the devices that have received release candidates to-date. At this time, we do not plan on incorporating devices that did not receive a RC into this release. Also absent from this release are Tegra 2 powered devices and many of the Exynos based Samsung devices. We will provide a status report for these devices later this week.
Next on deck
With the 10.1.0 code finalized, we will return to our M-release cycle and work towards adding additional functionality and features; including the new Privacy Guard feature, which was merged into the nightlies today.
There are many new and exciting things planned for the remainder of the year, just wait and see what we will do next!

On the 10.1.3 RC: (updated 7/18)
1: Only use the MF1 AIO file available here.
2: If you cycle bluetooth off and on it may get stuck. You need to reboot to resolve the issue.
3: Verizon FIOS app crashes
4: BT headsets don't work with the Skype app
5: If you set up a phone number to include pauses (like your voicemail PIN) the keypad wont register any other touches during that call.
Many other problems are fixed by simply re-flashing the same rom file over itself.
Please PM repeatable issues from the release to me. Post a logcat in the developer thread or a JIRA ticket if you expect it to get fixed.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ SPECIAL NOTES -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
1. To enable Developer Options: Menu > Settings > About Phone. Tap build number 7 times to unlock Developer Options
2. Photosphere: This feature is not offered on non-nexus devices
3. There are a lot of questions about how CM10.1 moves your files to sdcard/0/ folder. This is to support multi-users. If you flash back and forth between a non-4.2 ROM and CM10.1 (which is 4.2) you'll end up with sdcard/0/0/..etc since the upgrade to 10.1 moves your folders into a new /0/. You can safely move your files out of /0/ back to your sdcard if you're on CM10, or back to the first /0 folder if you're on CM10.1.
4. Don't update from CM10 to CM10.1 using the built-in cmupdater. Update in recovery for the first flash from CM10 to 10.1. Once on 10.1 you can use cmupdater.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ INSTALLATION NOTES -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
CM can be flashed using CWM or TWRP. Only use the latest TWRP or CWM!
When you install CM10.1 your data will be moved to a new folder /0/ (this is to support multi-users).
Make sure you have the latest CWM or TWRP installed so that your recovery isn't confused by the new location of your backups. Official TWRP d2vzw or Latest CWM (scroll down to Samsung Galaxy S3 (Verizon))
GAPPS is not included in any CM download. You must flash a gapps zip if coming from another rom or when starting with a clean install. You do not need to flash gapps when 'dirty flashing' over a previous CM install. Download gapps here.
According to Cyanogen it is possible to flash CM10.1 over top of an existing CM10 installation. It is generally recommended to do a clean install if you run into any issues.
Always make a backup before you try a dirty flash or upgrade to CM10.1.

I Fixing Data
If you flashed a CM10.1 nightly and are stuck at roaming/activating or don't have data, try any of the following (in order of simplicity):
(1) Go into Mobile Settings - Mobile Networks. Change CDMA mode to RUIM, go into airplane mode, come out, it should login to 4g in a minute. You can wait for activating to time out then skip or not install gapps until after setting the correct mobile network setting.

(2) Power down. Take out the sim card and reboot. In mobile network settings set roaming to auto and the subscription to RUIM/SIM, turn off the phone, pop the sim card back in, boot up.

How to get voice AND data back:
1.) Odin the root66.tar file from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762204 (the torrent version downloads MUCH faster)
2.) Open the dialer and enter *2767*3855#
3.) DONE! Voice and data should be fixed (it fixed it for me at least, and I had tried EVERYTHING else)
From there just Odin back to Jellybean following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114 and you're golden...

Fixing GPS
invisiblek said:
GPS - it HAS been working for 98% of builds, however if you cannot get GPS to connect, possibly due to dirty flashing, the following has worked every build for me: Settings - Apps - downloaded - GPS Status - clear cache, clear data, force stop. Then open gps status back up, let it sit with gps on for a moment and see if it starts searching for signal again....if this still doesn't work (sometimes) - settings - apps - all - google services framework - clear data. This has worked 100% of the time but I try to avoid it because if you do this, you need to go open back up the play store and see if it still connects. If not, recovery - clear cache, clear dalvik usually takes care of that.
Clean install of builds has given me 100% functional gps every time.

I can't seem to find it because now 10.1 is trying to use my external sd to save everything, and i cannot locate my previous back up anywhere.

For some reason it nested your old internal SD card. Check inside a folder labeled as "0" then CMUpdater if that is what you downloaded it through.
On another note. Is anyone planning on making a build with the data commits yet today? Or are they slated to be included in the next nightly? The disclusion of the data severely through me off this morning.
This might sound stupid however, would it be possible to get a list of additional features that are added with 10.1 the only thing i know that is different is the quick settings menu. other than that, i am not certain what is new with this version.

Here is the clock fix.
The single application known not to work is the Clock: Our changes to 4.1's clock to add the Stopwatch and Timer in CM10 aren't compatible with Google's own implementation of those features in 4.2 (which we're using in cm10.1); If your clock starts crashing after upgrading to 10.1, simply go into the Settings -> Apps menu, choose Clock from the All tab, and hit "Clear data".

A few important notes from cyanogen:
# Do not use the CyanogenMod Updater to go from 10.0 to 10.1. While you will have a functional rom, due to the 1st bullet point, you will be left without your proprietary applications and their data. We highly suggest performing the initial install manually via recovery (flashing CM and your addons). Once you are on 10.1, you can use the CM Updater as per normal.
# Finally, we always advise that you create a backup before any update. Do note, however, that due to Android 4.2 changes to support multi-user mode, your backups will automatically be transferred to /sdcard/0/[backup folder]. Remember this when attempting to restore 10.0.
On the nexus 7 boards I heard TWRP has been updated to see this. Not sure if that is true or not, not sure if that holds true for CWM, or for any recovery on the d2vzw.
However you can use a file explorer app to move them back to the root of the sd card.

TWRP has been updated to 2.3.2 (may show up as 2.3.2.3 on your phone) and doesn't have the problem of borking your folders. I've downloaded it (don't remember where, just google it) and it works fine.
also, i'm on 12.18, and do have data, have sent back and forth MMS, downloaded and everything seems find, EXCEPT:
camera works, first time it froze and said couldn't find camera, but rebooted, wiped cache and dalvik and fixed permissions and seems to "work" however, picture quality seems borked a little.
other than that all seems to be working fine.
Clockwork was updated yesterday.

[Q] Google Maps missing; Unable to install Katkernel (EOS4 JB)

Hi guys!
I just rooted my TF101 with ROM 4.2 JB (Team EOS 4 *JELLYBEAN MR1* Nightlies) thru Peri. I also installed Gapps from the link provided. Besides a few slowups on some events (especially when I'm connected to the PC), everything seems good so far but some apps are missing like Google Maps. So far that's the only app I know that's missing since I don't really know what Gapps contain. I've also tried to install KatKernel but when I do it just get stuck at the EOS logo starting up.
I'd appreciate any insights on this. This is the first time I rooted my tablet so please go easy on me
Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to the forum!
First, I assume you are using a CWM (ROGUE?) Recovery that came with PERI.
Since using CWM, I discovered Team Win Recovery Project. I like it a LOT better than CWM. It backs up the kernel when doing a nandroid, and it has all of the wipe commands in one locations.
I highly recommend using TWRP. The latest version is compatilbe with the the new file structure of 4.2 (/storage/emulated/0/) for the internal storage. If you use other recoveries, most likey when you flash a newer version of the firmware you will end up with your old internal storage mounted at /storage/emulated/0/0/ and have to move it up a level. Do a couple of flashes and you will have /0/0/0/0/.
However, back to the topic at hand, did you wipe the following before flashing:
Cache
Davlik Cache
System
Factory Reset (in recovery)
If you skipped any of those, when changing ROMs it can cause issues.
I am running TeamEOS4 and maps install no problem form the Play Store.
If you want TWRP, check out the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818452
It is pretty easy to install once you are rooted.

[ROM][OFFICIAL][4.3] CM10.2 RC1 for d2vzw (OP updated 11/25/13)

Important Thread (and forum) rules. Please read this section first!
This developer forum thread’s focus is on...development! As such please refrain from posting these kinds of things:
1) “_____ is broken”. Unless you include a logcat or a very easy way to repeat the issue, you’re just wasting the developer’s time by making them read that something on your phone isn’t working. They are busy volunteers, they aren’t going to spend the weekend trying to figure out the circumstances needed to recreate your problem.
2) “_____ is broken, I’m using _____ kernel”. If you aren’t on the stock kernel, stock theme, stock gapps, then there is no reason to post in this thread. Post in the kernel thread, or the theme thread, or the app thread where you downloaded your (broken) modified files from.
For less “developer-focused” questions, please refer to the Q&A thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2405429
Read this post from our very helpful moderator if you still have any questions. I'll keep both OPs updated. I try to install every nightly and read all of the 10.2 threads. If anything is missing please PM me.
Thank you!

CyanogenMod 10.2 RC1 Release November 22, 2013
It’s that time again! The bug reports on the 10.2 M1 have been greatly helpful, so a well earned ‘Thank You!’ to all of you that made your way over to our JIRA BugTracker and submitted your issues, ideas and logs!
The entire team has been plugging away at both 10.2 and 11.0 code branches – porting fixes and features back and forth to try and bring you the best CM 10.2 experience! Since the M1 we’ve also added a handful of new maintainers and devices to our merry roster.
Today we ship the initial wave of 10.2 RC1 builds. For those new to our build sequencing, these builds are release candidates. These allow for some final polish and fixes to take place before we release 10.2 for general usage.
To get ahead of the normal round of questions:
You can safely flash this on top of CM 10.2 M1 (or earlier 10.2 nightly) without wiping data
You can safely flash this on top of CM 10.1 (any version) without wiping data IF you also manually update your third party add-on zips (kernels, mods, packs, etc). If you skip this, don’t be surprised by ‘missing’ applications. Also, the phone app changed names, don’t forget to replace your shortcut for it!
For all other previous releases, you should be able to update without losing your data provided you follow the third party item from #2.
Always make a backup, regardless of 1, 2 or 3
A new added quirk to our releases, are those joining us from the new ‘CyanogenMod Installer‘ installation process. You exceptional folks exist on a slightly different release track, so without manual intervention, you won’t see these builds on your update mechanism. Fret not! Your release stream only receives ‘verified’ SNAPSHOT builds, which just means you’ll see a different set of builds as we approach 10.2′s general release. Of course, you can always update manually to the RC1, but we recommend against it. If you do go forward with it, be sure to make a backup (you can do it in recovery) as swapping between release streams currently may cause some issues with your user data.

On 10.2 RC1
1) To fix root: Developer Options / Root Access. Change to "Apps and ADB". Reboot.
2) Bluetooth may hang when you try to turn it off.
Many problems are fixed by simply wiping cache/dalvik and re-flashing the same rom file over itself.
2. Yes you can dirty flash over CM10.1. Make sure you also flash the new gapps.
3. Yes you can dirty flash back and forth between the unofficial CM10.2's and the official nightlies. Wipe cache/dalvik.
4. Please make sure you are on the MF1 modem
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ INSTALLATION NOTES -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
CM can be flashed using CWM or TWRP. Only use the latest TWRP or CWM!
When you install CM10.2 coming from a pre-4.2 ROM your data will be moved to a new folder /0/ (this is to support multi-users).
Download the 8/20/13 gapps from one of the mirrors above.
Always make a backup before you try a dirty flash or upgrade to CM10.2.
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ HOW TO INSTALL OVER CM10.1 -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Consider backing up your IMEI if you haven't already (link)
Make sure you’re on the latest CWM or Official TWRP d2vzw
Download a CM10.2 rom (nightly or unofficial) to your sd card
Download the 8/20/13 gapps from one of the mirrors above to your phone storage
Reboot into recovery
Make a backup
Wipe cache and dalvik (if you want)
Install the CM10.2 zip
Install gapps
Reboot
-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ HOW TO INSTALL FROM ANY ROM OTHER THAN CM -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
Consider backing up your IMEI if you haven't already (link)
Make sure you’re on the latest CWM or Official TWRP d2vzw
This process will wipe your data, apps, sms, mms, etc. However your internal SD card will not be wiped. Use titanium or my backup pro to backup anything you want to keep prior to proceeding.
Download a CM10.2 rom (nightly or unofficial) to your sd card
Download the 8/20/13 gapps from one of the mirrors above to your phone storage
Reboot into recovery
Make a backup
Wipe cache and dalvik (if you want)
Wipe Data/Factory Reset/System
Install the CM10.2 zip
Install gapps
Reboot
Reinstall Titanium Backup/Mybackup Pro/SMS Backup+ and restore the stuff you have to have, but its better to reinstall things from the market if possible (keep in mind your backups will be located in /storage/emulated/legacy/) (if you want)

1: How do I fix Titanium Backup?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44612424#post44612424
2: How do I fix root?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44614991#post44614991
3: Is camcorder record volume fixed?
Yes! It is fixed as on 8/19/13 nightly
4: Is focal working?
No, and if you open it it will wake-lock your phone causing massive battery drain.
5: Why do all my apps have persistent notifications?
Stock 4.3 change, working as intended - http://www.androidauthority.com/android-4-3-persistent-notification-background-apps-250448/
6: Why does the keyboard force close at the setup screen?
You didn't flash the new gapps.
7: How is your new baby doing?
Baby and wife are doing great. Born 8/10, 7lbs 0oz, 20", and healthy as a horse.
8: Why is my location messed up in .... app?
If you enable Privacy Guard for an app that uses location, it will not be able to determine your actual location (that's one of the points of privacy guard).
9: My phone is stuck at the CM mascot after rebooting?
Odds are you're using TWRP. Switch to CWM and the issue will go away. I have no idea what's actually wrong, only that the issue doesn't occur with CWM.
10: Why does my gmail wipe after each new nightly?
It's a problem with the 8/13 gapps. Mastamoon fixed it and provided us with a new 8/20 gapps (available above)

I'll test and let you know. I just flashed it.
EDIT: That's a negative. I repeatedly tapped the capture button and it froze, then couldn't connect to camera. Still isn't working it seems.
I installed the newest build and everything is working fine so far except Focal which is still only partially working.
Edit: Bluetooth still doesn't always turn off and can require multiple "turn off" presses to get it to turn off properly.
The very last line in the OP:
"Reinstall Titanium Backup/Mybackup Pro/SMS Backup+ and restore the stuff you have to have, but its better to reinstall things from the market if possible (keep in mind your backups will be located in sdcard/0/) (if you want)"
Is incorrect. backups will be in /storage/emulated/legacy/
Hit menu > Preferences > Backup folder location
click detect, search whole device, two folders will be found. Make sure you choose the location with legacy or your backups will not restore
It is focal working on official? Or is the same than mastas

Not yet.
This is my rifle, I am The Gun!
The 10.2 nighly is working flawless for me so far.
I flashed over 10.1.2 stable and used 20130813 GAPPS
Focal is working just fine too. EDIT: no it isn't.
FYI a new GAPPS was released yesterday. 20130813.

Thanks, OP updated
Also I'm working on a gapps mirror, waiting for it to download first.
root?
followed OP procedure, have lost root,
any suggestions?
(coming from 10.1.2, was rooted already)
Thx!
Not really a CM issue, but anyone else having issues getting SuperSU to work? Won't update the binary for me.

Root was an issue on the unofficials as well. There is an easy process to get it back but I cant remember. If someone can post the short how-to I'll link it in the OP.

Well it looks like SuperSU still functions properly and assigns su access properly (to terminal, greenify, etc), it just won't update the binary.
Everything else works fine from what I can tell.
4.3 is silky smooth on this build. Focal is working on my end as well.

ddggttff3, did you have to do anything beyond that permission change? I've made that change, tried re-flashing supersu in recovery, still no luck.
not a huge deal, but I would like to get root back.
Thanks!

If I remember correctly, flashing supersu replaces the su binary. For me, I installed the rom, enabled dev settings, set it to apps and adb, then rebooted, and root apps started working.
I guess others have narrowed down the touch sounds/audio and music issues to using any equalizer apps. So disable dspmanager and you can use touch sounds without disrupting music.

A few things:
1) It looks like all service apps are forced to have permanent notifications - any way to disable? I went so far as to go to each one and uncheck enable notifications in the app info, but they come back on reboot.
2) What is this quick-search box crap?
3) Google Now doesn't seem to like picking up my app names anymore - this has been around since some of the July 10.1 nightlies, but I was hoping this was fixed. Is there a workaround/fix for it?
4) So far - my gps is permanently on... what the hell?
google play
play store failing to download anything,
error downloading "your-app-here"
update for "your-app-here" could not be downloaded due to an error. (error retrieving information from server. [rpc:s-5:aec-0])
wiped app's cache and data, forced stopped, no joy.
wiped cache and data before rom flash, and after.
Any suggestions??
thx!

Two quick questions before I jump in to 10.2.
1. On 10.1 my phone would always say roaming when connected to my network extender. Is this fixed/ functional?
2. The my verizon app was never able to verify my number to report data usage. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Thanks!
I know focal doesn't work, so I have spent very little time in the actual app, but will we be able to save to an SD card, or will it default to Internal Storage?

Woes of my Infuse

I start with a fresh wipe of my phone and then install BeanStalk with gapps (I'm currently using BS version 4.4.275 with gapps 20140105. Everything is fine for months. Then a couple of apps will start to crash a few times (the camera, dialer, browser and google apps). I've stopped using titanium backup and clockwork mod to restore my data because they were causing issues. Then the force closes become more and more frequent. I ran fix permissions and i have know clue if it helped or not. Then finally all hell breaks loose and everything begins to force close and give errors of no space left on phone. No launcher will stay open everything just bugs out. This seems to be an on going matter. It doesn't seem to resolve no matter what rom I run. I've gone through every folder sizing it and my phone is not out of space. I am getting very frustrated with my Infuse. I don't understand what some of the stuff means in my catlog file. If someone could help I'd greatly appreciate it.
i found out that Google+ and Google Drive might be the cause (such as when you upload or backup your photos to those clouds)
if you have time, go read those last 10 pages of BeanStalks, you will see what others have offered to resolve this issues
as for me, I'd do full wipe, specially format the sdcard0 (keep the Rom and Gapps to your SDcard1), and stop using the two Google services mentioned above. and use another Gapps (I am using the minimal one) Good luck!
Same problem with Unofficial CM 11.2 also
Exactly the same issue I am having with Unofficial CM 11.2 from scott.
I have been using Scott Harts Unofficial CM from 10.1 to 11.2 on my Samsung infuse and each time i notice a pattern.
Each of the above ROMs start out pretty smooth, and the phone works without any issues for 6 months or so. Then occasionally and app or two start crashing. Then in a weeks time all hell breaks loose and almost all apps start crashing such that the phone becomes unusable. Especially trebuchet starts crashing and that is the end of story.
In the past i have noticed this happens a month or so after an updated rom has been released and I used to upgrade to the new one and the cycle continues.
I am currently on the latest Unoffical CM 11_2 (Kitkat) and the appropriate Gapps installed and the same issue has happened twice.
I have tried the following to fix the issue and nothing helps
1. Clear data for trebuchet and a bunch of other apps.
2. Reinstall Gapps
3. Wipe Cache >> Wipe Dalvik Cache
4. Wipe Cache >> Wipe Dalvik Cache > install Gapps
5. Wipe Cache >> Wipe Dalvik Cache > install custom Rom >> install gapps >> wipe cache and dalvik again
The only way I have been able to get it working in the past is
1. Wipe data/factory reset > Clear Cache > clear Dalvik cache and possibly reinstall ROM and gapps (not sure, but I guess factory reset also does the trick)
So my phone is stuck in this mode and I would like to help debug the situation. Can someone help with the next steps? So that I can capture all required information before I do a factory reset .
Unable to get RSA prompt
Well I went ahead with a factory reset, installed Unofficial CM11_2 from Scott. Got the latest gapps from goo.im and phone seems normal again. But that is the expected behavior untill it starts acting up again.
I tried a lot to connect the phone through ADB and each time it remains unauthorized.
I tried on 2 different laptops, Windows 7, Windows Vista as well as Ubuntu - it always remained unauthorized and no matter what i tried ... changing USB ports , OS machines...nothing helped.
I never got the RSA signature prompt on my phone so could not do anything with ADB.
Any body has any ideas ?

This has been an issue for a while, if the problem is showing up like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2175261
Honestly haven't tried ADB with the newer stuff (namely Beanstalk), I just know that ADB as been a problem in the past for Scott's ROM's.

Yes, it is the same problem. Any suggestions ? How is the AOSP based Carbon ROM, any idea if it has the same issue too ?

Not sure about the other ROM's. I could go on a flashing journey, but I have two new devices I'm getting adjusted to right now. If you are not tied down to CM (don't know if it's your DD), I would suggest trying Carbon or CyanFox.
Me, I didn't need ADB that much at the time so I stuck with what I have. Not a solution, but I hope you find a ROM that works (partnered with a minimal gapps).

Unfortunately the infuse is the only phone I have (so my DD)...but the lure to test the ADB on carbon is also compelling for me. Let me try moving to a non smart phone and try this out.
OK. So i installed the Carbon KK nightly, and encountered the same issue. adb devices always lists the phone as
0123456789ABCDEF unauthorized.
Also i never received the rsa prompt...
Moreover the device key seems to suggest it is some default value as compared to an actual device key.
Got it Working !!!
Ok so finally got it working.
I moved away from Scott's Unofficial CM11_2 on my daily driver and moved to Carbon ROM. Loving the new rom so far.
Once i moved to this ROM, I started adb on my desktop (adb kill-server, adb start-server) and was waiting
then on phone enabled Developer options and Android debugging over USB and connected the phone to desktop, and zingggg I get the RSA prompt.
One important thing it read is that you phone should be unlocked when you connect it to your desktop, so in case you have things like PIN or gestures that lock your screen....ensure that your screen is not locked when the phone is being connected.
Not sure if this was the issue or if it was the CM rom,,,but issue is resolved, I am loving Carbon...so not going back to CM to check the lockscreen theory....but worth a try for someone who is pulling his/her hair out like i was.
Ciao !!!
---------- Post added at 05:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:41 PM ----------
missed mentioning that do not worry about the device id of 0123456789ABCDEF....i noticed it does not change for me even when adb connects properly.
It is the unauthorised state that needs to change to device.
What's the default launcher on Carbon, or does it give you a choice like Beanstalk?
Will be retiring the Infuse soon, so am thinking on what ROM to put on when I go to sell it (or give away). The requirement is that is not overwhelming to a new user. Cyanogenmod has a lot of customization, but it doesn't necessarily get in the way. I'd call it borderline overwhelming. Beanstalk is quite overwhelming, because you are forced to pick a launcher right from the beginning (even though I like it for the Jellybean qualities).
Because of these, I just may return it to stock, but have it rooted and with CWM.

I do not see any option to select a launcher like Scotts CM had. So i guess there is no direct option to select it.
Quick search in the running apps shows Launcher 3 running, and apk also available in the priv-app folder in rom, so can conclude launcher is Launcher3.
I did not find it overwhelming in any way.

I flashed it last night (latest nightly), and it gave me the option of either Launcher3 or Google Now Launcher. I think if someone who was new to the device would be stumped a little by this, but would probably select the Google Now one (the question would be would they press once or always) and be done with it.
Having something recognizable runs at an advantage here compared to Beanstalk, where, unless you know CyanogenMod (or have played with a lot of launchers) you wouldn't know what to select. That would be overwhelming.
Anyway, I wiped the data again, breezed through setup (skipped everything but language and time zone), so it's all ready to go. If need be I can get them set up with a network and Google account before I throw them to the wind.
EDIT:
I see why I got the prompt ... I used the Paranoid Android micro apps package, which includes ... the Google Now Launcher.

Hi,
I was using CM 10.1 from Scott for like a year and didn't have any trouble at all, really the best ROM. Only had two small problems: wouldn't film on 720p without bugging, and MHL to HDMI was not working.
Now I installed CM 11, with latest gapps ( didn't know there was a CM11.2 ), and camera issue on filming is the same. But now it's worse, battery life is lasting half the time it was before, and gallery is crap, bugging every time. Did you have the same issues? Tell me the post of CM11.2 please..

Not sure about this, but I think CM 11.2 is referred to as KitKat 4.4.4, which would be latest in the CM thread. So you are probably already running it.

apart from the issues that i mentioned - my experience with CM 11.2 has been great. There are some obvious things like MHL etc that do not work, but those are known issues.

You can download the Nova Launcher from the google play store if you want to have the same experience as with Scotts Beanstalk. I love the carbon ROM but I am so accustomed to the Nova launcher that I cant live without it.

OK the exact same problem has started again today on Carbon ROM. Wonder if this is a Cyanogen thing, as that seems to be common between the two.
Anyone else facing this ?

Hmm, don't think I kept a ROM on my Infuse long enough to encounter this problem (except for my several months with CM 10.1, no issues). As for other phones, I use Jellybean on my semi-retired HTC and did not have this problem (closest I came was when I tried out Fly-On mod - lag closures often). But I don't think It's a Jellybean problem.
I think (and this may have been covered already) this has to do with the piddly datadata partition filling up. One way to check is open a terminal emulator (app on the phone of adb shell) and type:
Code:
df
Look for datadata in that listing. If it is in the 90% range, that spells trouble. If that is the case, you could try one of two solutions.
I don't know what possessed the developers to separate the data partitions in KitKat (I know, for "performance reasons") but leave 1/2 a GB for it. Lower end phones these days give you twice that.
Over the past few years or so I've installed ROMs going back to ICS. 99% of the time there was absolutely no issue. I habitually do a (1) factory wipe, (2) dalvik wipe, (3) system format, (4) sdcard0 format, (5) install ROM zip, (6) install gapps, (7) wipe cache and (8) wipe dalvik.
In the hundreds of ROMs I've installed and tested, 1 or 2 were bad compiles, and everyone soon knew it. They were immediately removed from any host site. So, if you're having issues, (1) install you ROM as above, (2) perhaps install a smaller gapps, and/or (3) check that you're not overloading your phone from the PlayStore.
The last and rarest issue could be your phone, but rule of thumb that works 99% of the time is: (1) assume it's always your fault first, and (2) read, read, read, read, read.
