I prefer not to shimmy up the phone to reach the power button, and have it set up so a double tap on the back key turns the screen off. However, they do not shoe up on the lock screen. So I have to enter the pattern then turn the screen off. Does anyone know a mod or widget you can place on the screen in the lock screen to turn the display off?
Thanks
Viper ROM has that sort of option. I don't use Xposed, but I believe it does as well.

If you're willing to flash a custom kernel, Evolution's kernel has swipe to sleep feature (swipe right to left on the bottom of the screen to turn it off, works on lock screen.)

If you are using the stock LockScreen, double tapping anywhere on the display will turn the screen off. If you are using a replacement LS you can get an Xposed module that turns the screen off with a double tap on the status bar.

Is there a way to get the lock screen before the pattern screen?
for me, when i hit the wake button, it goes straight to the pattern screen. If i turn the pattern screen lock off, and i hit the wake button, it goes to the lock screen.
I just want it so that if i hit the wake button it would go lock screen then pass word pattern screen
Pretty sure you can only have one or the other.
That's weird. Mine always prompts the lock screen then my pattern screen. Thought this process was default.
Could try this. Go into settings>CM settings> lockscreen> unlock options
If skip on security is checked then uncheck it. That should prompt the lockscreen then pattern screen upon wake

Why do people assume that everyone is using CM. I am on Weapon and your answer means nothing.

One can only assume since cm is the majority. If you don't want assumptions then be specific on the details. General questions can arise numerous answers.
Good morning everyone,
I am looking for a widget or tweak that makes it easy to put the phone to sleep other than having to tap the status bar twice. Something I can put down below to avoid having to mess with the status bar every time I want to shut off the screen. Let me know if you guys have any suggestions! Thanks guys.
Depending on whether your launcher has gestures, you can download Screen Off & Lock.
Screen Off & Lock
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
I'm using Nova Launcher with a double tap on home screen gesture to both Sleep the phone & Hibernate apps with Greenify.
Greenify

If you are talking about the knock feature, you can just leave an empty shortcut spot anywhere on your screen and double tap that spot.
Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I just discovered over the weekend that if I hold down the Home button, it not only shuts off my screen, but also locks the phone so that it requires my swipe pattern to access it again.

Thanks. I did it and was given several options to choose as default (Google Search, nothing, Greenify+Lock, etc). I opted for the long press to Greenify option. This is great.
I'm playing s8+ for over a week. Slowly the first dust settles down and I start thinking about the phone in a more reasonable way. One day I was using an app that allows rotating screen 180° (*). My first thought was: what will happen with the home button when it will be on the other side of the screen?
Will the force touch work?
It doesn't of course.
So will I be able to launch the assistant app? Yes. It launches when you keep your finger on the home button a bit longer.
Ok then. So I asked the question myself:
What this force touch is made for?
The only use I find is: enable use of Home button in immersive mode (On the AOD screen you need to double click to "turn on" the screen so I can't say that the force touch is necessary there).
Any other use you find for this sophisticated tech?

It's just to show off when the screen is off, and Always on Display is off (I don't use it due to it being a waste of battery) and allows someone to turn on the screen without using the power button.
Is just f'n awesome straight up bragging rights when you tell your friends that I can turn my phone on by touching the invisible button lol that's my only reason for needing it
I love the feature.... no screwing around with power button or anything just press and hold to unlock:good:
The only uses are turning on your screen from a screen-off state, and to return to home straight away when the buttons are gone. You can force-touch the place where the home button would be when the home buttons aren't there to go straight to your home screen, pretty useful when playing full-screen games. And it's super easy to unlock your phone when you set the touch sensitivity to the highest, just a small touch unlocks the screen easily
Heres a tip: If you leave the home button on with the always on display, you can also double tap it to have it open the lock screen instead of unlocking.

Why do people keep saying this? Is there some feature I'm not aware of? It's a hard-press or, in the alternative, a double tap if the home button is showing. I've never seen any option to "press and hold" (a/k/a "long-press") like you and others keep saying. What am I missing?

go to display settings then to navigation bar settings then there is option for unlock with home button, once that is on, with AOD on you just touch and hold the button and it will go right to your home screen or you can shut off AOD and with the screen off you can still press and hold in the same area where the home button would be and it will unlock the phone and take you to your home screen:good:

Strange. That doesn't work for me. I enabled "Unlock with Home Button," and when my screen is on AOD, I touch-and-hold on the home button, and nothing happens. Only double-touching or hard-pressing do anything. I'm on Verizon S8+.
Main use is for AOD. You wouldnt want your phone turning on simply be the home button screen area being rub.
But outside of that. There isnt a need for it. There had been phones with on screen home buttons before. This thing here is that they disapper when using full screen on the s8
I don't care for the 'Always on Display' that Samsung and LG have implemented in their phones the last year. To me it seems absolutely useless, because it's not interactive and can't tap a notification to reply from the lockscreen. I much prefer Motorola's way they did their 'Active Display', I think that's the better way to do something like that. But whatever
Is it possible to disable AoD, and turn the screen on by Double Tap 2 Waking ? And then swipe up like other Android phones to enter the home screen ?
If I get a text, I want the screen to turn on, and be able to reply to that text from the lockscreen, is that possible on the S8 ?
You can double tap the home button to wake from the lock screen

Needs AoD and that only takes you to the lock screen. You can hard press the home button on AoD to get right to the home screen.

Can reply to text notifications from the lock screen ?
No. But you can get a lock screen app that will allow you to do this. Here is one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jamworks.floatify

You can install "glimpse notifications" app free from playstore with allmost zero battery consumption ... With that you deactivate AOD and everytime you receive a notification the screen light up to see the notification on lockscreen.
Don't forget to activate led bling light to work together and put all the apps that you want to light up your screen to "white list"
Also, the long press home screen works on both AoD and the regular lock screen, if you turn off AoD.
Galaxy S8+ Black
Hard pressing the home button while screen is off (AOD off) also works.
Basically one thing that I despised about the Pixel 3 XL when I had it was that you can't use the double tap to wake without using the Ambient display, and it appears from what I hear is that it's the same way on the OP7P. You actually have to do a Quad tap on the Pixel 3. Double tapping twice. What idiot at Google thought that was a good idea.
On my currently S10+, I have AOD and Ambient display turned off, and if I double tap the screen it takes me right to the lock screen so I can easily see what my notifications are. That's the way I prefer it. I know you can hit the power button, but I prefer to use the double tap method.
So, that one thing pretty much killed my desire to buy this phone. There is no way to turn off the Ambient display on the pixel 3 and still use double tap to wake, and it seems this stock feature carried over to the OP7P. Samsung at least gives people a choice.
So before I give up totally on buying this phone, does anyone know a setting or a hack to get it to work like the S10+ does?
You can double tap to show your lock screen on the 7 Pro. You can also double tap on a blank area of your home screen to lock the screen.
Yep 2 taps while screen is off will turn phone on at lock screen.....not ambient display or like a aod type screen.... and i like that because next move is just unlocking device
Nova launcher has a gestures input section and you can choose to "screen lock" with double tap, see attached. Hmm read your title which is misleading, makes it seem like you wanted to lock the phone with dbl tap.
It's in the kernel settings, it seems. Maybe somewhere else. I don't think I'm going to do DT2W because of the fingerprint sensor
Thanks for all the replies.
One thing that I noticed in all the review videos I watched on Youtube, is that when they double tap the screen, it shows the black ambient screen with the little icons for notification, not the actual lock screen. Then they use their finger to unlock.
So what you guys are saying is that it can be set up to when you double tap it takes you right to the lock screen wallpaper which shows the actual notifications and their text and not the black screen with just the time and little notification icons?
I like to actually see the notifications and what they say when I double tap like when the phone is sitting on my desk. I always hated that on the Pixel I had to double tap, and then double tap again.
@djsubterrain
Ya the title was the best I could come up with at that moment.
In settings/display/ambient display turn off tap to display. That is how mine is set up and when I double tap the lock screen comes up. I have it set to pick up phone to show which will show the ambient display.

Because you need to enable another setting for double tap to wake.
Settings> button & Gestures> quick Gestures> Double tap to wake.
Under buttons & gestures\quick gestures turn on double tap to wake.
