PDF's won't load - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lately I've been needing to open PDF files on my phone while traveling for work. However, when the PDF files are emailed to me, once I select the attachment from Gmail the PDF view opens but doesn't display anything. This also happens if I download the file tot he sd card and try to open them that way.
I've tried rebooting as well as wiping cache/dalvik and fixing permissions. Nothing works.
Any ideas?

What app are you opening them with?

I think it's just trying to open the PDF for viewing directly in Gmail. When I open the Gmail app back up it is still on the blank PDF screen.

Install a program that can handle PDFs like Adobe Reader or ezPDF or something.

Adobe Reader solved the problem. Thanks!
Prior to trying Adobe Reader I made sure Google Drive was installed and functioning properly but no matter what I did the PDF's wouldn't open. I'm surprised Google Drive couldn't take care of this, forcing me to resort to using Adobe.

Google Drive only allows you to access files stored on Google Drive. Quickoffice (also by Google, and installed by default on the Nexus 5) will handle it as well. I recommend Adobe Reader only because I've had trouble with some more complex PDFs in Quickoffice.

Good to know. Thank you.

[Q] How do I change application mapped to a particular MIME TYPE?

Hi,
I have the Aldiko application for reading books. Since that software was just acquired by Adobe, it now includes a PDF reader. So far so good. I like that PDF reader...
However, I just installed the "Documents To Go" application and this thing took over the PDF MIME type, but since I did not install the full version, it wont let me view PDFs anymore.
So, my question is: How do I remap the PDF mime type back to Aldiko, but still keep "Documents To Go" for MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint stuff?
If it makes a difference, I am running CyanogenMod7 on a Mytouch 4G device.
Thx!
Have you tried opening a PDF file on its own and then redirecting it to Aldiko? Or have you tried uninstalling Documents to Go (or Aldiko) and seeing if it continues to happen?
Please understand, these are questions from a n00b who cruises the forums...
@pbarnum: I tried opening a PDF off the sdcard using a file manager, and it indeed asked me which of the two programs I wanted to use and if I wanted to set one as default. So I did, I selected Aldiko as the default. This almost worked: Aldiko is indeed the default now for the browser, touchdown and for the file manager. However, the email and gmail applications keep trying to open the "Documents To Go" app. I tried rebooting in case those applications had cached the MIME settings, but the issue remains.
Uninstalling "Documents to go" caused gmail to use some other app, but the email application just does not know how to open PDFs anymore...
Hmmm... doing some searches, it looks like there may not be anything one can do because this works through "Intents" and not via a statically (And user manageable) configured MIME type table.

Settings, Applications, Manage Applications, find Documents To Go and click on it, and there should be a button with something like "Clear Defaults" on it. After that you should be given the choice again (unless I misunderstood your question).
@martino2k6: Thanks, I did not know I could manage the defaults that way... However, that still does not solve the issue. Documents to Go does not show to have any defaults associated with it, yet it is used by default by certain applications.
The issue is: When "Documents to Go" is installed, it causes "gmail" and the standard "email" application to use the "Documents to Go" application to open PDFs. This happens even if Aldiko has been selected as the default application for PDF files. So, what is wrong with that? Well, the free version of "Documents to Go" is good in that it provides viewer support for MS Office documents, but it does NOT provide viewing support for PDF documents, and there are free viewers that do provide that capability.
I dont know why, but installing a second PDF viewer, in addition to Aldiko, solved the issue. The viewer I installed is Adobe Acrobat Reader. Now the adobe reader gets the PDFs and NOT Documents To Go.

Sync S-Notes to Google Drive Issue

I have been testing the sync feature to google docs/drive of all my notes. What I noticed is after I sync the first time I try adding another word to note and sync again, it deletes what I just wrote. Please advise if you guys are experiencing this issue or advise if Im doing it wrong.
Here is what I do:
1. Create note and write something
2. Save note
3. Go back to S-Note screen where all notes are and select Sync
4. Choose the new note and click sync
So far so good. I see it in Google drive.
5. Open note back up and write a word or something
6. Repeated steps 3-4
This time, my new change has been deleted and now shows what I initially committed. ??
Hey guys, quick update. Guess Sync only works one way on S-Note which is why I had issue.
I ended up creating a dropbox account and download app called dropsync. Dropsync allows me to do 2 way sync and does so automatically. Now when I add notes, create new ones, or delete one, dropsync will ensure to sync with drop box.
Pretty legit I must say.
I use an app called Folder SYnc and it will do two way sync. Use with several Cloud accounts. There is a free version and it is a great app.
What file format are you saving them in? Just curius if you are using thr .snb format and if you are able to view those files on a pc.

Same question here, I am asking me if it is possible to edit .snb file on Google Doc or with a Windows app. Otherwise, the sync is only a backup solution, but no more...
Im syncing them as .snb so you can just consider it a backup. At the moment, I dont think there is a PC application that will allow you to modify the files. Im hoping Samsung will make their kies software have access to open .snb files from PC.

I tried the same and it works
However I noticed one issue,
If I edit a note that has been createdin the other device the whole thing goes wrong
the page and everything is still there but I loose the part of the note created in the original device.
so it looks like viewing is fine but you can not edit the same note across different devices

This is the BEST solution. Works very well. The syncing which comes with S-Notes should be avoided at all costs. Evernote and Google Docs are very incomplete and difficult to use. Dropbox rules.
A similar solution for your PC.
The only problem in using Dropbox with your PC is that the files you want synced must be in your Dropbox folder.
Well, actually no. You can create "symbolic links" from any folder on your PC to your Dropbox Folder so that Dropbox will sync them. This can be VERY convenient if you have large document or database files you wish to keep synced but don't wish the originals to live in your Dropbox Folder.
This is VERY easy to achieve with something called "Link Shell Extension" found here:
http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/hardlinkshellext.html#contact
Just follow the directions. It talks about doing "hard links" but I have found doing "symbolic links" works just fine. Once installed, you simply right click the folder you wish to link to drop box and select it as your link folder. Then you right click your Dropbox Folder and select that as the destination. Then if you open your Dropbox Folder it will appear that the folder you have just linked is there, but it's not, it is in its original location but now Dropbox will sync it.
Cool, right?
P.S., make sure you get your free 50 GB of space from Dropbox first

Do not be so critical, for a simple backup, it is far easier to use the sync included in S-Notes than the Dropbox solution...
IF we could use the .snb with a software on a PC, perhaps it could be interesting to use Dropbox, but really, without any possibility to edit, don't complicate your life, use simply the backup solution included in S-Notes

With all due respect you are wrong.
The built in syncing does not properly account for upstream and downstream updating.
For instance, if you use the built in sync feature you can literally never delete any notes locally as the sync action will simply restore the ones you have deleted. Try deleting a note that has been previosly synced using the stock feature then run a sync again. I reappears.
Drop Sync works properly. If you have deleted a file locally it will not replace that file when you do your sync and the deleted file will be removed from your Dropbox account as well.
As such your Dropbox becomes a mirror image of your device. This is how syncing as opposed to just backing up is supposed to work. You can also control this behavior even further in options if you like. In addition you can command Drop Sync to sync automatically in the background at regular intervals.

No Solution: Syncing / Editing and then Syncing S-Note to Google Drive?
Well, I described my issue here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2203479
Background: My company is a Google Apps for Business enterprise user and I need handrwritten to text notes for a lot of meetings. The ideal solution is using Google Keep, or S-Notes with S-Pen and then sync to Google Drive.
Situation: 1) When I use Google Keep everything works fine until I open the document in the Drive and it is a Polaris, or Kings Office file format, not Google Docs - and not editable; 2) When I use S-Note, everything works until I open, edit and try to re-save the file within Google Drive. I get an error message: "failed to save document" and then I get "Saved /data/data/com.google.android.apps.docs/cache2/......"
The Solution: I can write directly into a Googls Doc using the S-Pen but prefer using Google Keep, or S-Notes.
From reading this thread it appears no one is successfully using Google Keep with S-Pen, or S-Note to save / sync documents to Google Drive; edit those documents; and then re-save, or re-sync to Google Drive?
Thank you!
It does appear that NoteSync is the best approach to have notes SYNC with Google Drive

Out of all the services I like SugarSync the best. I can sync my S-Note folder and it will automatically sync new notes and keep them up to date if I make revisons so it is a set and forget back up solution. If you want to try it use the referral link below and we can both get an extra 500mb.

Where is the "local folder" for snote?
to sync s-note
I have tried and tried many apps and methods to sync s-note across devices. ONLY THING i have found to work.
I use a app called DS Cloud for my Synology server.
I Created a folder on the server called snote
I created a folder in my snote directory on my note 10.1 and note 2 phone.
Reason for this is IS if you sync from the default location you will sync templets There are different template Version of S- NOTE ON Each device.
So once i did the above i Told ds cloud on the desk station to share that folder .
on each device i have to sync the folder i called my notes inside the s- note folder. That way is does NOT Sync the templets and app information.
To get them to google drive. From my Disk station i sync the snote foilder with my google drive account.. This is just for a Just incase my home internet is down.
The issue your having with notes being over written between devices i think is because different s note versions..
Hope this help anyone. its only way i can get it to work properly for me.
OHH I LOVE Synology disk station.

Anybody read ebooks on the 1020 ???

How can i read my downloaded ebooks on my 1020 , i can transfer the book to my 1020 using Calibre on my notebook, but none of the ebook readers i have tried on the Windows app store can not see them
Can anybody help.
Thanks
John
I tried with the USB connection and it never worked. You have to use either Skydrive or the Calibre server.
For Skydrive just make a folder in your Skydrive account and put all your ebooks in it, the use freda+ or fbreader to download them.
I can't remember off the top of my head how to set up Calibre as a local opds server but I think it is well documented in the manual.
I wish I knew where the files sent over the cable ended up
Hope this helps.

I have been using freda+ and skydrive it`s the only way i can get it to work
Thanks
John.
I personally use MoHoo Reader, it has ability to import from SkyDrive, via Wi-Fi, SDCard (which is not available for 1020), Media Library...
Guys you should also try the bookviser application.
Its the only app that i got used for reading..
easier and does not fatigue the eye.
I read on phones since my Nokia 6600.
Generally, I read using The Kindle app, since I can continue to read while on The Phone, on The iPad or the Kindle reader itself.
Since The Kindle app for WP 8 is not able to see side-loaded books, I email myself my books in ePub format, and open them on The Phone using the Fiction Book Reader app. I set the black background with white text, so my eyes won't get tired and it works like a charm.
Have you tried Tucan? http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/s...98d16-f21e-4410-841e-3b2281342139?signin=true
It's very complete and can import all varieties of files, also crazy custimizations (you'll feel on Android ). I recommend it

[Q] cannot attach pdf from Google drive to gmail on nexus 5?

I can easily attach a PDF to a draft gmail from drive using my galaxy nexus on 4.3 android. I can no longer do this since upgrading to the nexus 5?
I click attach in gmail, browse to drive, but my PDFs are now all greyed out on this new phone. Only images allowed. I really need this functionality. Any help very much appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same issue. You can't attach any thing other than images from a cloud service like Google drive using the Gmail app. Attaching local files that are on the phone works. This new integration with Drive has broken this.
Thanks for replying Kayno. I wasn't sure if it was just me doing something wrong.
A workaround is to open the PDF using drive and then save it to the phone, them use a file manager to attach it.
It was much easier to attach direct from drive though. Hopefully the app developers are on it.

Hope they fix it as I do like the new file picker integrated within gmail but that's no good if we cant attach any files other than images and videos.
Another work around is to attach your drive account to a file manager like Solid Explorer which works very well with all cloud accounts like Box, drive and dropbox. Save your file from there to your phone and then share it as a gmail attachment. I know this is also not ideal
