Low earpiece volume & occasional WiFi issues - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my son a new Moto G 16GB GPE (XT1032) about 3 weeks ago from Google, it is stock, locked, unrooted, and on the current firmware. It works well for the most part but sometimes on a call the earpiece volume will get very low and muddy even when set on max... sometimes just turning the volume way down then back up will clear the problem, otherwise a reboot always seems to clear it up for a few days then the trouble seems to return. Is anyone else having this issue?
Also, although I haven't been able to verify it, the WiFi will randomly disconnect... He tells me he is in the living room (about 25' from our Asus RT-N66U router) he will be on his phone and it will suddenly switch 3G for a bit then switch back for no reason. No other device in the house has any issues and I have verified his WiFi Advanced settings match my Nexus 4 which has no issues. Now, we do have an extremely cluttered 2.4Ghz WiFi area in our area, being in and surrounded by apartment buildings and a hotel very close, but no other device has issues (Nexus 4, LG G2, two HP laptops, a cheapo Android tablet, and WiiU).
Are these common issues with this device? Do you thing a FDR would help, we haven't done one since it came out of the box?
Just looking for a little feedback since I am tired of hearing "it's a piece of crap" from him since it seems like a great device... he is kind of leaning towards moving to a Lumia 520 just for the cost and giving me back the Moto.

Bump... Anyone? Or is this really unusual?

For the call volume issue, try setting the in call volume to one level below the max. Seems to have fixed the problem for me.

Just exchanged my inspire for a new one, same problems, recall?

Well, ive been having signal/call quality problems and a broken speakerphone so I decided to exchange the phone for a brand new one.
On this new phone the speakerphone still doesn't work (the other person can't make out what im saying at all). Both phones have had this same problem, why does HTC not fix this?
By dialing *#*#4636#*#* I have switched the network to edge only and now get 3 bars instead of 1 in my house. Im hoping this fixes the call quality problem Im having.
Depending on how my call quality is over the next week, I may go back and see if I can pay the difference and get an Atrix.
Tell them you're having signal issues @ home and you'd like one of the microcells. That will alleviate your signal issue while there. The speaker phone, I dunno, mine has worked just fine on both of my Inspires.

Ive read different reviews and it seems very hit or miss as to whether or not they will give you one for free or charge $100-$150. Do you have any experience with it?
Called ATT, they sent updates to my phone supposedly, I seem to be maybe getting 1 more bar in H+ but not consistently. He told me to call a store and tell them you're having problem and ask about the microcell. Would be nice to get that for free, but still bummed about my speakerphone.
if you've only got one bar of signal, it could be the reason your call quality could be so low- may not be much an issue with speakerphone at all... does the other side hear you without trouble when using a headset or the phone itself?
and i'd assume you're using the stock rom that at&t ships- maybe you could install the volume+ app and tweak your speakerphone settings?
Which setting cuz for me it just yes back to hspda

The speakerphone doesn't work even when I have 3-5 bars. I will be talking to them fine, and then once its on speaker they say "what what, i cant really hear you" and then once i take speaker off they can hear me fine. Both stock phones have been like this? I will check out the volume+ app

speakerphone TERRIBLE
I have also had major problems with the speakerphone on my phone since I bought it. I think I am right around the 30 day return point, but I have been to lazy to return it to stock and take it back. Not sure if it is a hardware problem or if the phone is just like this. I asked my friend who has the same phone, and he said he didn't notice a problem.
It's like the mic input is way too sensitive, so when I put someone on speakerphone whatever they say gets looped back into the mic and echos VERY loudly back to them. Absolutely impossible to have a conversation with speakerphone on which is very annoying because I prefer it most of the time.
I can also notice that the problem exists when I use Soundhound. I can play a song at an extremely low volume and the input meter on Soundhound is always completely maxed out. If the song is at a normal volume, it often won't be able to detect which sound it is because it must be coming in too loudly. So I have to turn the volume way down and try again.
Is this not a normal thing on the HTC Inspire? Has no one noticed this? Or am I having some sort of hardware problem?
Can anyone think of a way to fix it, such as a mic input level adjust?
Thanks.
I exchanged my phone 3 times at ATT because of cell signal and call quality to later find out they are working on the towers in my area - so they say. I had 3-4 bars of service about 2 months ago and now i'm down to 1-2.
In the end, I threatened to switch to verizon and ended up walking out of the store with a free microcell. - I've also been on a ATT Premier Business Acct. for the past 5 years - so that might of helped.
Call quality on the Microcell is superb. Some of my text messages don't want to go out the first time and I have to resend but other then that its pretty good.

- Also, depending on your ROM, Radio, RIL combination - you may have the wrong Radio for the ROM you are using. I had a few different ROMS installed and the radio provided clear call quality on my end but on receiving end they stated that there was a echo. I switched radios and flashed the appropriate RIL and the problem went away.

The mic for the speaker phone is on the back.. when you use the speakerphone, you have to talk to the back of your phone.. not the bottom.. if you talk to the bottom mic they wont be able to hear you. This has been talked about on these boards countless times. search

GPS accuracy

This weekend for the first time I had to use my Nexus 5 turn-by-turn navigation on Google Maps to get somewhere. I'm no stranger to the feature, as my previous Note 2 had a dashboard mounting bracket in my truck for this very reason.
Besides the speaker not being loud enough to hear the directions (one of my complaints with this devie), I found the GPS isn't very accurate at all. I have it set to High Accuracy, using GPS, WiFi and data network to find my position. The software often put the arrow about a block away from where I actually was and it kept falling behind telling me where I was supposed to turn.
I was driving at about 40-50 km/h at night with a cloudy sky. I reckon this was never an issue with my Note 2, both with stock TouchWiz and custom ROMs. My Nexus 5 is on stock 4.4.
So, what's going on here?
I honestly can't say I face this issue. My GPS is on point whether driving or just using it when I go hiking or camping.
A couple of weeks back I helped a buddy move into a new place and I loaded up my truck and he gave me the address and I popped it in the GPS, it locked within seconds and got me there just fine. No issues.
I also use it when I go camping. I'll find a nice place to pitch the tent and mark the campsite, then go exploring. Anything interesting I put a pin on it and can find my way back real easy. The speaker issue, sure. I use Viper4android (sound mod) and custom kernels to raise the output gain and make the speakers louder so that's a non-issue for me.
If you're rooted, check out FasterGPS (and if you're not rooted.. go and root).
Regarding sound loudness: try fauxsound (you'll need a compatible kernel and root). It boosts speaker, handset, and aux output significantly without adding distortion (although you can push it far enough to distort if you please).
Great, thanks for the tips.
Yes, it's rooted.
Regarding the sound boost apps, do they work on stock kernel, or do I need to flash a new one, like franco? I really don't want to do a clean wipe at the moment to install a new kernel.
GPS accuracy might be a loose antennae. As for speaker sound, not sure what to tell you. I had the phone resting on the seat beside me since I have no dock, with the radio going at highway speeds and had no problems hearing the voice directions. I didn't even have to max the volume, it was about 70%. No modifications.
Perhaps you have the extra glue around the speakers issue?
I've had the same GPS issues and they have just gotten worse over time. Have had the phone for 10 months. Finally called Google and a replacement is in the mail.

Let me know if the replacement is better. My GPS has also degraded significantly, but I wasn't sure if that was related to using CM11.
I haven't driven much lately, so this issue alone doesn't warrant a return for me.
However, the disappointment is stacking up over time. It seems to me that the N5 does a lot of things, but none of them very well. It's basically a tinkerer's toy with an attractive pricetag for the specs. Maybe it's because I came from a former flagship Note 2 device, but I do sometimes miss it.

Will do. I did go back to factory, unrooted and relocked the boot loader. GPS is much, MUCH, worse. It actually loses GPS signal now all the time. I'm convinced now more than ever that this is a hardware issue that gets worse over time combined with software that makes it worse. Hopefully the new, albeit refurbished, phone is better.
My GPS has never worked well, I have had mine for about 10 months as well. I've opened it up so the warranty is void but I don't care about that. I would fix it myself if I knew what exactly the problem was.
I use navigation at least a few times a week and I've never had a single issue with the GPS. It locks on right away, and is always accurate.
I had a nexus 5 from Sprint and the GPS was noticeably off, returned it and Sprint (terrible coverage). I got one from the play store and it's spot on.

Got the replacement. Preliminary results...huge difference. Better than the phone originally was when I got it. GPS locks in immediately. And this is rooted stock with elementalx kernel. Will update again after a few days of use, but so far, so good.
Ultimate test passed earlier today. Wife and I went golfing and she dropped her phone somewhere. Loaded up Android Device Manager on my Nexus 5 and drove right to her phone. GPS was bang on.

Weak Bluetooth?

Anybody else experiencing a weak bluetooth connection with the S6? I'm losing the connection with my Garmin Vivosmart in places I've had no problem connecting with other devices. I'm curious about other's experiences on this as a search hasn't turned up much yet.
I have noticed this as well. I could walk pretty far away from my S4 before it would drop. With this S6, I only get a few feet away before audio gives out. Doesn't disconnect, just loses audio.
Also, random loss of audio from time to time, even when the phone is right next to my head.
Yeah I've noticed the same thing with my S6. At work I don't always keep my phone on me and with my M8 I could walk around the whole building without my G Watch disconnecting and with my S6 I can only get a few feet away before the connection drops.
Yes happening with my moto 360 it is annoying and hopefully will be fixed soon
Haven't had any disconnect issues, but for some reason connecting to my car stereo has been a nightmare. It takes like 5 tries before it actually connects.

Same here, takes me 3 or 4 times to try to bluetooth sync with ford sync system. Yesterday it would sync then play for 30 seconds and pause play back. I don't know if its the phone or lollipop as alot of the problems I see are also happening on my nexus 9.

Identical experience. With my S4 and my Nexus 9 I was able to literally get to the edge of my large yard before losing connection with my Vivosmart. Now I can't leave the room since getting my S6. I hope it's software and we can somehow change it, because it's ridiculously bad. I also have had to turn my BT off and back on three times this week because it would crash and refuse to talk to either my Vivosmart or my car. As soon as I toggle the BT on the phone it reconnects to everything. Seems to be triggered by starting my car (i.e. the BT car interface becomes available.) Never had either problem with the S4.

Since so many people are having this problem, it's probably phone related and not just an isolated incident.

Yeah this is one of my only remaining complaints about the device. I can't use my Vivosmart for sleep tracking anymore...it disconnects/reconnects way too many times and the persistent vibes wake me up.
So honest question...let's assume it is fixable by software tweaks. What's the fix in that scenario? Reroute more power to bluetooth radio? Other?

Well I've seen a lot of threads online for other devices where an Android update affected bluetooth range. Obviously there's some sort of software control for this. I'm rooted, and I'm willing to try some things but I don't know where to begin. I'm not an OS / Kernel guy.
i wonder if its what it is connecting to as well as a problem with S6? i have the Motorola Buds headset and it has worked as expected giving me about 100 foot range when talking on it. i also have a 2013 Ram truck with Uconnect and have not had any issues and it connects right away and reads my text etc.. as it was doing with my Note 3 and ATIV.
i havent tried other devices but have a few like a speaker and will see as i use them if i have issues.
Haven't messed with Bluetooth that much on this phone, but I think wifi is a bit weak

I've had Bluetooth issues. Seems really short range.
Wifi is about the same as my LG G2, but BT is about half as far. I used to be able to get around 15m at work (lots of shelving) but now I'm lucky to get 5m before hearing static and starting to cut out. Sucks because BT is my main source of music at work.
Anybody had better luck after applying the new ota?

Choppy Bluetooth?

Just wondering if anyone else is having issues with their bluetooth? Mine seems to be ok for a while then starts cutting in and out to the point I can't listen anymore. Seems to happen every time I use it and with three different radios. I plan on visiting the Sprint repair shop but wondered if I was missing something?
Having the same issue, I've already tried deleting the bluetooth cache, un-pairing/re-pairing and even went as far as to boot into recover and delete the entire cache.
Nothing seems to fix the issue, still cutting out like a champ. Starting to consider going back to the note 4.
Same problem here when I connect to my cars bluetooth radio. Also the network connections seem to be all over the place as well..

Mine has been VERY choppy. To the point that I dont even bother with Spotify in my vehicles anymore. And thats my main source of music!

0 problems here, pairing 4 different types of headsets, 3 vehicles and even my computer and gear watch streaming the sound through either. I mainly use pandora and sometimes just the music app or youtube. My data is what seems to be very touchy on this phone, where on my n5 I still get more bars than the n7 in the same areas.
I have the same problem, so does my wife's Note 7.
I had the same problem then I went into the settings for advanced location services and turned off random bluetooth scanning and wifi scanning. Now it works perfectly.

I have no issues with Bluetooth whether it's in my car, through my wireless headphones or using my Gear 2. I'm loving this phone. The bluetooth connection is actually better on this phone than my Note 5.

Agreed. I'm still having far too many dropouts/interruptions/skips/pauses etc.... to call it a final release. I listened to music that was on my device and still experienced the dropouts/interruptions/skips/pauses. Has anyone else experienced Pandora speeding up toward the end of a song?? Almost like the song is sped up to compensate for the delays/interruptions??

My (negative) findings after 2 months

My Nokia 7 PLUS was bought mainly as a backup phone and to experience pure Android without paying an insane amount for a Pixel. I like my new Nokia but there are so many positive reviews out there that tell you why this is a good purchase, so I'll try to mention the weird stuff I've experienced. This phone has been my daily driver for 2 months now.
First and foremost the quick charging issues that I have another topic going about, so I'll skip this part.
Wi-fi disconnecting and giving me a notification sound. I don't know if I'm just being a noob here, but getting "ghost" notifications throughout the day has been a bit bothersome. At first I didn't know what was going on, I was seemingly getting notification sounds without there being any updates for me in any apps. But the other day just as I unlocked the phone I got the sound and saw the wifi being disconnected for a splitsecond. I don't know how I turn off wifi sound notifications without impacting other more important sounds so I guess I'll just have to live with this. But it's still annoying to get this sound if the wifi DC's for half a second.
Rubber around the edges of the screen coming loose. I got the bronze coloured model and if you look just at the edge of the screen there's a millimeter thick bronze frame, and between that frame and the screen some sort of black rubber or adhesive is starting to come loose. I noticed this about 2 weeks ago and I thought it was a hair that had become stuck and as I started pulling about 5 cm of black rubber came loose along the screen. I think the rubber casing that was with the phone is the culprit, because when your phone is in your jeans for several hours a day the "case" seems to dig just at the edge of the screen which could cause this. The rubber that has come loose was not visible before and it's not visible that it was been removed either.
Google Assistant opening seemingly randomly. I have two phones on my computer table just to the left of me, both with Android Nougat installed and Assistant enabled. Sometimes I sit in complete silence and play PC games, only with audible key clicks and Google Assistant will open on my Nokia 7, yet it has never happened on my other phone (Galaxy s8+). It's spooky in more ways than one.
The 3.5mm jack port is behaving weirdly. I've tried with 3 different headphones and it's always the same. I need to push, pull and turn before the headphones get properly connected and still then they can get disconnected at any moment. You can probably imagine how much of a nuisance that is if people around you don't agree with your musical taste. (hint: train rides.)
This may seem like a long list but my overall impression is still largely positive, especially when it comes to lack of bloatware, duplicate apps and the battery life is outstanding.
The headphone thing I find as well but I have a carbon fibre case on my 7+ and this is what causes it as if I remove the case the problem does not manifest. The other things you mention I have never had. I have the TA-1055 UK version since its release.
Sent from my Nokia 7 plus using Tapatalk
I really don't recognize any of your complaints. I can't type a long search query in the adressbar in Lightning, but that's about it. Maybe you should RTM your device.
The ghost notification sounds annoys me as well.
My headphone jack works fine.
Issues I have:
Ui stutter/lag compared to other phones.
Phone showing as uncertified in google play store.
Not getting android updates (still on may patch).
Battery not as good as expected for the battery size the phone has.
Don't experience any of the above issues here. Fully reset you phone or RMA.

About a week since I have received the phone.
The mobile connection is usually 4g+ to 4g. depending on where I am I guess. However, I have noticed that on phone calls, the icon changes to hspa+
I don't notice any speed change but I'm guessing this is related to no support for VoLTE?
Also, I notice that from wifi to mobile transition occurs very sluggishly. Sometimes on banking applications the wifi doesn't work which is odd, but it doesn't connect to mobile on the fly either. Usually I have to turn off the wifi for it to work.
I've also had some weird experiences with my N7 plus.
1. Headphones do not work randomly. When this happens only the speakers work the ear piece on the phone doesn't work as well. Phone needs to be rebooted to fix this.
2. Some apps, such as Prime music and Quora, do not work when connected to the TP link ADSL router aty home. The iOS versions of the same apps work from the same router. Apps on the Nokia start working only when I connect to mobile data or office WiFi.

Volte is a mess on Android. In the UK it mostly only works on iphones or Android devices bought directly from the network who modify the firmware.
That said I'm on BT Mobile in the UK (uses EE network) and Volte and wifi calling work well based upon my experience so far using Oreo 8 with July updates.
Since the day I started playing PUBG, the call speaker is acting quite weird. Many times when I get a call, the speaker will be automatically turned on, but it doesn't show that. I have to turn it on and back off to hear it from the earpiece. It mostly happens when I'm in a game. But it has happened other times as well. I don't know if it is a problem on just my phone or android in general. Anybody have any fix for this?
