I am going to buy a second hand Nexus 5, but the seller does not have its box, so i cant check the serial number. I wonder if the serial number is on the simcard tray like my nexus 4. Could anyone who owns nexus 5 check it for me?

Open this link by replacing the xxxxxxxxxx with the phone's imei, then check the <msn>311K*********</msn> lines.

Probably, he meant the serial number started with the manufacture date and not the s.n. seen in ADB or fastboot.

Thank you bitdomo, yes I wanted to check that nexus 5 lot not to be 310. That solution works well.
The seller told me the nexus 5 he sell is from lg thailand, but when I check the imei he gave me, it is a nexus 5 from the us. You save me from cheating :good:

I heard that it is not "officially supported" on ATT. Will I be able to get an ATT prepaid SIM card and use it on N5 in the US?
It should work with ATT.
I've basically asked the same thing here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2508100
Im trying to understand what IMEI number to give them when I sign up. Will they take the Nexus number or do I need to visit a store and "find" an IMEI from an ATT LTE phone?

Any reason why you'd even want to give them an IMEI number? I haven't given AT&T any numbers for this Z1 I'm on and it's working perfectly. If you mean for a new activation, you may not need to give them one. I'll get in touch with a friend to see what's needed.

The Nexus 5 is fully compatible with all the ATT frequencies. I don't think there should be anything to worry about as far as the IMEI goes, there is no reason the IMEI number on the label of your Nexus 5 box shouldn't work.
The only time you should have to worry about the IMEI is when you're buying a used phone off of cragslist or ebay, because if someone stole the phone or defaulted on their account, the IMEI can be blacklisted by the service provider.

You can't "find" an IMEI number. Their unique to each phone. You can spoof them but it's not legal or ethical. It's also not something an average user is even going to be able to understand. Use the one from the N5. It will work fine.
Hey I was just wondering if the Nexus 5 sold unlocked at best buy is the same one sold on the play store? Its advertised as a sprint phone and has a few different things in the box then what I saw in YouTube videos.

As far as i know there are only two versions of the nexus 5, one for north america and one for the rest of the world. The one for north america supports att, tmobile and sprint on the same device.
I actually got my Nexus 5 from T-mobile on a pay per month plan, so imagine my surprise when I put an att sim card into it rebooted and it worked on att lte. I was expecting the deivce to be locked to T-mobile and give me a sim error, the rep even told me that they are locked to T-mobile so I am not sure if they all come carrier unlocked or it was something that happened during the rooting, unlocking bootloader and custom rom process.

Is anyone using ATT? Since the Best Buy Sprint N5 has an MEID number, ATT needed an IMEI number to input into their system in order for the new sim card to work.
Well I'm 100% sure that all nexus 5's are network unlocked regardless of what carrier you get it from. Of course if you ask the customer rep that question they will say its locked because they don't want you to jump ship. They don't wanna have to go through the hassle of phone calls, emails, and letters of collection debts. Not to mention that they will get their money in the end when or if you decide to jump ship without paying cancellation fees. The the bill gets footed to your credit score in a negative manner. I spent the last three days trying to figure out whether or not they were unlocked and I got my answer from a reliable guy on here. (In the Tmobile thread) didn't want to waste 8 or 9 dollars paying a company to unlock it for me. (If it was unlocked to begin with) so yeah carriers can't be trusted. They will say whatever they have to to protect the interests of their company.

It is my understanding that all phones have both meid and imei numbers. Have you checked in about phone under status? Both numbers are listed there I believe.
Edit: only imei is displayed. My bad lol.

Just pop an att Sim into the phone, reboot and it will start working. It should automatically register the imei, it did for me. If not you can go to setting->about phone->status and read the imei off to the Rep over the phone.
I got my nexus 5 from T-mobile, just removed their Sim card put in my work att Sim card and it picked up service. No need for an unlock or anything as I believe all nexus 5 regardless of who sells them are unlocked.

I lost the pin that came with the nexus so when I need to switch Sims I just use a very fine sewing needle. Don't use a paper clip or even the pin that comes with an iPhone they are way too thick and will deform the pin hole entry, I know cause mine got deformed by the iPhone pin.

BTW the tray doesn't pop out completely, I would say once u push the pin in it comes out maybe like 0.5 cm after that just use ur fingers to pull it out, so the pin just kinda disengages the sim tray from the phone.

Look here for more info https://www.google.nl/search?q=nexu...gfe_rd=ctrl&ei=H077UrruE4iyOp7EgcgP&gws_rd=cr, unlocking through your carrier is the easiest way i guess but they`ll probably charge you for it.

Are you sure it is locked?
Although we cannot say for definite that all Nexus 5's are carrier unlocked (Some Nexus 4's turned up locked), this will actually be the very first locked Nexus 5 I have come across. Have you tried another SIM?
If for some reason, it is locked (it really shouldn't be), it shouldn't be too hard to flash the factory image (see the return to stock thread)
I didn't see any carrier lock Nexus 5. It should not lock for any reason.

If it IS locked, factory image won't unlock it. However, yours would literally be the very first nexus 5 to be locked that we have ever seen on this forum.
no nexus 5 are locked to their providers. while i have read many stories of people being told by their provider(employees that just dont know) that it was, it never actually was. even from a carrier like tmobile, where the n5 isnt locked to the provider, employees think that it is.

By flashing factory image i unlocked my phone but i have to enter my pin every time i power my phone
I think that orange did something with their firmware to lock the phone to their carrier

From this former electronics seller, I can guarantee that employees not just didn't know that, but if they knew, they were told to say they didn't. Also they are "forced" to lie for a potential sales commission.

My brother recently got a tmobile nexus 5 on craigslist, and it turns out it can't be activated on tmobile. My question is could he use the nexus 5 on sprint or does he have to get it carrier unlocked. I've read around and some say that the phone is carrier locked and some say it isn't. Just wanted to get an answer from the reliable xda community.

its not carrier locked, but you might have to get level 2 support for them to add the IMEI to their system.
he cant activate it on tmobile then it must be blacklisted. if its blacklisted, it goes on a national registry. i know att and vetizon are part of the registry, if sprints on it as well then you wont be able to use it on sprint.

This. Not to mention the fact that there is no such thing as a carrier locked Nexus 5. If you want to take a Nexus from one carrier to another, you simply add the IMEI to their system when you activate the new service. If you can't activate it, then the phone must be blacklisted which makes you SOL. All the more reason not to buy a phone off of Craigslist.
you can check if its been blacklisted, for free, here http://swappa.com/esn
Almost positive that the tmobile nexus 5 doesn't have CDMA in the phone. Try an att Sim in the phone. If att and t mobile don't work in there, then nothing will.

Yes it can be done but there is a different situation here whereby the phone cannot be activated on tmob, presumably because it's blacklisted.

Hi everyone. I have a google nexus five which I've rooted and installed custom roms on. Actually the phone I'm typing from. My Wife bought another nexus 5 from someone that offered it to her. The seller said it was for T-Mobile. The package was sealed and boxed just like the google version except that it did come with a T-Mobile sim card. There is no labels, bloatware, or any software on it that normally come with T-Mobile handsets. The only difference I can find from that one to mine is that when turning it on mine shows an opened lock and hers doesn't. My question is would the procedure to unlock bootloader and root be the same as the google version? I searched through the device threads and only found the google nexus 5 thread but not one for T-Mobile.

Its good to check. There are only 2 models, unlike vendors such as Samsung.
D820 - North America
D821- everywhere else
The only differences are the LTE frequencies. Every ROM, kernel and baseband software is compatible with both.
