My NP is fully stock not rooted. I have a 64gb SD Card installed. I am able to copy files to it and some programs will use it to store data. The problem is when I try to change my email attachment download directory to the external SD card I get "This folder doesn't allow the creation of new files."
Is there any way to fix this?

I use Aqua Mail. I suspect it is an app issue. I sent a message to the developer, maybe they can help.

Use the free SD fox app on the play store which you must be rooted to use. This is a known problem. Think I've read the update foxes it though.

I'm running the latest stock update, so it did not fix it.
Not sure I want to root my device right now since since I use it for work with an enterprise system.

BTW, I didn't do the latest update (I'm rooted, and it didn't seem worthwhile to have to re-root). Maybe the update fixed this problem, but not completely? Just speculating.
SDfix from Play Store fixed it for me (root required).

Apps can only write to their private directories on the SD card. Or you used a system app.

To install an app the PlayStore wont let you install do the following (You will need at least one device compaible with the phone)
Install ESFile explorer on the Device with the working App.
Tap On App Manager then Select and HOLD the Application you want.
From the List Select Back-Up
Then Back out back to the first page, and find the Backup folder, and go into it, then into the Apps folder.
Your see the APK backed up.
Then Press and HOLD, and select SHARE.
Share the file to your DropBox
You can then grab the file on your PC and install anyway you see fit.
If you have Unknown sources ticked, you can also then open Dropbox on the Nexus 7, navigate to the folder you shared it to, and install it from there. (Simples)
You could also share the file Via Bluetooth, I have not tested to see if it will let you install the file, but I cant see why not) (Thanks for the idea Gogeta)
I installed and am now using BT Smart talk this way.
Hope this helped someone.
If you find a simpler way please post it.
If I managed to help, please say Thanks.

Good thinking.

If you go to /system/data/apps all installed apps go in there, as far as i know. Is this what your trying to get? That way you can skip the backup and save any space that it takes up.

Or, you could use Quixer to send it straight over to the other device, no matter the distance. I like the Bluetooth idea as well though, that would be the easiest for single, close range sharing.

You should be rooted in order to access internal memory from your phone. Or use adb to pull the apk.
There's also lucky patcher but shouldn't share it in xda.

It doesn't need root, but it enjoys it .
Without root SD Maid will obviously only be able to access non root files including non root empty directories.

I would recommend Clean Master
HTML:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard
OK so as you have noticed kit kat does NOT allow third party apps to write to the SD card, this is stupid, but lucky for us we have a fix IF you are rooted
we have 2 solutions
1) using root explorer or something similar go to
/system/etc/permissions/platform.xml
Click to collapse
and enter the permission that i have circled in red below (see attached) then it will work. Enter it so it looks EXACTALLY like it does below
2) the other option that MAY work is to go to the play store and download SDFix, that does the same thing (however myself and a few others are reporting that it isnt working as it is written)
big thanks to Mr Sam Epic for showing the fix, which came from Unknown Force in a SGS4 forum
****edit 4/19
had a few reports of SDFix not working, it didnt for me, i thought it was just a random error, what i did to fix it was to go into platform.xml and manually edit the permission so it looks exactally like the image below, i put in the extra return after the permission, there is not a logical reason why this fixed it, but it did

Yes, it works by overriding the Kitkat not being able to write to SD. should overcome that limitation in all aspects.
