Cyanogenmod 11 RUU - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently got my first Windows phone (HTC Titan II / HTC Radiant), so I am very new to the Windows phone world. But over the past few days I have read a researched as much as I can to remove Windows phone OS and replace it with Android. So far I haven't found much at all that is what I am looking for.. But I am starting to get the idea that Windows phones use these "RUU"s to update everything from the computer and I used one for myself to upgrade my WP rom.
From my understanding, a RUU can do these things:
System (the /system mountpoint)
Boot (the /boot mountpoint)
Recovery
User data (the /data mountpoint, this means you lose all of your personal data)
It may update your radio image (if newer)
Source: http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/13446/what-is-an-ruu
And since all the hardware is compatible with Android.. I don't understand why someone can't make a RUU that will over wipe WP and replace it with Android and maybe in time even install CWM so you won't need to use these RUUs and just use a .zip?
Sorry if this in posted in the wrong thread;
Thank you for reading!

Sparrow40k, imagine:
You're living in Sydney. And you baaadly want to live in Washington DC. So - why shouldn't someone just remove Sydney for you and replace it with Washington?
Because it's not possible.
That's the answer.

Future request - the org. HTC Magic rom

Because it has all the features that I thought the branded Vodafone version would have....
seconded.
Also, i've talked to HTC, and they say no updates for vodafone users. So root please!
(also, for what its worth they seem to have really rather good customer services!)
"
Dear Tim, Thank you for contacting HTC Europe. You ask a good question! At the moment we have received no information from Taiwan regarding how they plan on managing software updates for the Vodafone HTC Magic, and whether or not Vodafone customers will be able to get an enhanced, HTC application filled Android update. If I was asked to speculate, I would most likely say no, Vodafone customers will not be able to obtain the HTC Android software version - my rationale behind this is that T-Mobile customers did not get the HTC Dream software (although Cupcake was very similar), and also generally speaking even with our WM ROMs this is never usually possible - but I can not say for certain! Until we are offered more information from Taiwan I will have to ask you to be patient. Kind Regards, Perry HTC Europe

Now that we have root (thx Haykuro) does anybody have the org. HTC rom/english with the MS exchange mail app.?? Please....
The problem is probably to find someone who has access to the rom I'm dying to get my hands on the rom from the soon to be released swedish HTC Magic but I guess that won't be so easy since someone has to buy the phone, root and...backup? We should have someone on the inside (HTC) ;D
there are a couple of threads in this forum from people who said they had the asian sapphire, and were willing to help. I'll try pm them later.
Yeah duffnut saw the treads too, but I think they need help with dumping the rom and putting it back together... and I´m not the one
I just sold my Vodafone branded HTC Magic and I´m getting the real deal tomorrow - HTC Magic from HTC - not branded (only HTC). With all the apps. I miss plus MS exchange.
I´ll do a Nandroid backup and upload the .img files here when I get it done.
That would be nice then i can flash my Magic with it once I have it

if you get it done can you write a step by step instruction to do it please. I am getting an aussie HTC Magic in a couple of weeks and want to be able to back it up so i can either root it or go back to it from a rooted version if required.
thx
I just got home with the new HTC Magic - branded HTC... with all the goodies.
Did not root it yet or anything else.
I´m doing a fastboot boot recovery-new.img - and the PC says Okay for downloading and for booting - and reboots the Magic, but it just stays froozen on the htc magic page.
Should I root it first? and try again...
I can`t root it either - because it freezes on the htc magic screen with Haykuros recovery-new.img.
In the recovery utility is says;
reboot or
apply update
wipe and
THIS:
E: Can`t open /cache/recovery/command
I don´t know if its safe to do the update without the recovery-new-img.

Joost 39, I bought a TIM Magic less than a week ago and I had a similar problem.
If your original HTC Magic is like my TIM Magic, you can find that getting root privileges is very easy, but at the moment I suggest not to flash any image which cannot be fastbooted.
e.g. After getting root at shell access I used flash_image to flash the recovery-new.img. I lost a bootable recovery partition, I didn't make a dump of it (very stupid...), so no way to reboot in recovery mode.
I now found a way to recover my original recovery partition and to start a special recovery-new.img (Haykuro's based).
I didn't have enough time to test flashing my special image and I'm not sure it will work for you. I'm sorry I'm short on time to help you right now, but if you don't get any helpful answer in the next hours, I'll get in touch.
In the meanwhile, please verify if you can have root access simply by installing a terminal on device (like better terminal) and issuing su command.
Or maybe with "adb shell", then "su".
Verify uid and gid of su user issuing the command "id".
If positive, you could dump your recovery and boot partitions and maybe (maybe, I'm not sure) I can generate a working recovery with nandroid for you (and a boot.img with full root access too).
Maybe you get help from more experienced users, remember it's my first android device and I spent on it only a few hours since I bought it a week ago (Yes, it's a disclaimer ;-))

Is there no hope for 1.6 users on a UK voda magic?

Hi folks.
I am desperate to get Cyanogens mod on my phone but I can't downgrade to 1.5 because i'm on 1.6 with a UK vodafone Magic (32B).
Any chance a serious andoid expert could step in and tell me:
Will there be a new image made to fix this issue?
is there a method I will understand? It says on the Cyanogen Wiki that there has been "some success" with my version but I can't find where it says how to downgrade for my version
I keep hearing about gold card or summink but i'm a noob and I don't have the foggiest idea where to start.
Please help!! and try to make your responses understandable
Dont worry...
Hi there
I think is possible what you're trying to do, but in order to change your rom you don't need downgrading nowadays (HTC are not PSPs, hehe).
I have a magic from Vodafone ES, and what you have to do first is check your model, can be 32A (HTC) or 32B (Vodafone, less ram in cell phone), so you'll probably have 32B like me.
After this, you need Android SDK and drivers to connect your device usb, load a modified SPL via ADB/fastboot (there's a thread in the forum with the HBOOT collection, you need one of those in your cell in order to change the rom).
Summarizing:
1. check if 32B
2. get Android SDK to use the commands fastboot/ADB
3. replace SPL
4. continue with the cyano's wiki
I followed this: http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=74683 (sorry is in spanish and a bit outdated, but the apps you need like the SDK are in there, and you have some screenshots, you can skip the root part since cyano's mod is rooted already).
About the goldcard method, I dont know because mine hadn't had perfect SPL, I only had trouble with the usb driver, and downloaded HTC sync (look for it on google if you need) and adb/fastboot detected my device.
A good idea is to install a recovery image once you change your SPL, I personally recommend Amon_RA's recovery 1.5.2.
Last but not least, these explanations are the basics, I know it sounds like chinese to you but read more posts in the forum, there's a cyanogen flashing guide as well, with all the information and these steps you'll do fine.
Hope you'll succeed, let me know your issues
I do understand reasonably well but you cannot use the guide on here with a UK magic as the SAPPH.img file or whatever has an incorrect ID. it's at this point the process cannot be completed.
Thanks so much for your lengthy reply but in this case I believe my phone is unique and the problem cannot be be as easily resolved as you suggest. I must downgrade to 1.5.
Are any of the extreme android geeks able to shed light on this?
I can shed light on you as I have a Vodafone HTC Magic 32B. I used the instructions at the link below and got my phone back to Cupcake, but oddly enough I used the MyTouch instructions and searched online for a suitable sappimg.nbh file as the one they provided didn't work for me. Now I am running Qteknology MagicSense Hero ROM with working LEDs. Forget about ADB, SDK and the Goldcard method... I am sure you want the simplest way to unroot so you can get back to 1.5 and the reroot to whatever you like. Here it is: http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/15/how-to-root-a-donut-phone-android-1-6/
This is great news but I have tried that method with the sappimg.nbh and it says incorrect ID every time.
Are you using a UK vodafone magic then? If so, where did you find a SAPPIMG that worked?
Please try and remember!
It doesn't matter that your phone is a UK Vodafone Magic.. if you google sappimg.nbh and download a few until you get the one you need you will have your phone reverted back to it original state... ready to root. If you stop your search after one attempt you will not have done all you needed to do. You don't have to know any codes or get another SD card.. just put some effort into it from your computer. Google is your friend.
but being a bit of a noob to all this, surely trying sappimg files at random might risk bricking my phone? I heard there was a good sappimg for all but my version of the phone which is why I mentioned it.
Maybe someone on here has a sappimg known to work with my phone?
But yes, i'm off to do some intense googling.
Thanks
Hi
I have a UK Voda Magic and I followed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=579328 and worked perfectly for me
It truly is lovely of you all to try and help and I appreciate it but I suspect you have not read my comments properly.
Those of you that have commented here were only able to get it to work because you were flashing from/rooting from a 1.5 cupcake build. Once the OTA 1.6 donut update is on a UK magic it cannot be downgraded and so all comments thus far are superfluous. contrary to other comments it is necessary to flash SAPPIMG.nbh first and this does not work on my phone - incorrect CID.
Is there anyone on here that can help with MY issue?
Thanks.
Strange, because I have no issues flashing UK Voda 1.6 phones, just fastboot and use ADB to load recovery image, then flash whatever 32B ROM I like (Dwangs 1.17.1 is great). I did a work collegues before Christmas and his phone had never been modified, only received the OTA update from 1.5 to 1.6 around October time.
I'm on it. That's the way I used to flash roms back when i first got my magic. Now i've been thrown by all the simple guides to put cyanogen and I thought the sappimg method was the only way. I'll just download the sdk and get on my merry way
I don't understand what the issue is? I have a UK vodafone 32B and have been flitting between CM's mods, Hero mods backwards and forwards with no issues whatsoever?
I'm on CM's latest right now (well, a few back now 4.2.11 latest), just followed the instructions and it worked....?
I certainly did read your OP correctly and I also was on 1.6 when I followed the link I posted. In that link it has instructions on how to do it if you are on 1.5 OR 1.6
Started out with 1.5 Vodafone UK Magic which i've flashed many times using the fastboot boot cm-recovery-1.4.img method.
At one time i went back to stock 1.5 but let it update itself (OTA) to 1.6. Since then i've continued to flash new ROMs without problem.

hi alfieg
ive vodafone magic 32B with donut and perfect SPL, in present day, I tried all the guides and methods in many forums, without success, for example, if you follow the guide in wiki cyano, already the first step there are problems, how I try to update with sappimg. (cupcake 1.5) as the ends' update writes "main version is older," "update failed "... if you do not then a way to get cupcake is impossible to have root on magic 32b with donut and Perfect spl ....
Indeed in the wiki says, if you have donut Downgrading to 1.5 FAILED: HTC Magic Vodafone ES (Spain) (32B) Official 1.6 updated OTA "
wait a few geek we solve the problem ...
I don't see what the problem is. You should have been reverted back to 1.5 and flashing new ROMs. The instructions are simple.. someone else has done all the hard work.. all you have to do is download a file and hold your phone.

download a file, to make what? If you can not root for real?
Will you lot please listen to me!
There are two methods reccommended:
1) Flash the SAPPIMG.nbh to downgrade back to 1.5 - this does not work on a UK magic on vodafone 32B at all! It reports Invalid CID, update failed!
2) use the fastboot boot cm-recovery-1.4.img via the SDK - This does not work on my phone! - I have the device listed when I use "adb devices" so the drivers are ok but it hangs at <Waiting for device> when i try to fastboot boot cm-recovery-1.4.img!!!!!! No ammount of killing the server and remounting as per the cyano instructions works!!!!! in fact, it wont let me remount (Operation not permitted)!!!
If you don't understand please don't post. People who have not updated to 1.6 OTA and people who don't have a UK voda 32B - stop posting here.
Grrrr
No need to downgrade

I have a New Zealand Vodafone Magic 32B and they share the same Hboot 1.33.0004 (SAPP10000) SPL with the UK (and NL and AU) vodafone phones. That means they are VERY easy to load alternate ROMs onto. The horrible stuff many Americans and others have to go through to root their phones isn't required for us.
You do need to get the Android SDK installed and talking properly to your phone.
Assuming you have the SDK set up and you can see your USB-connected phone listed when you enter the "adb devices" command, then the rest should be easy. See the Cyanogen Mod wiki for the details. You want the section on "non-Tmobile 32B magics" on this page:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
It starts with:
"Non-TMobile 32B Magics
If the above doesn't work for you, don't despair. Some non-US Magics are shipped with a fastboot compatible SPL installed. If you see 3 skateboarding androids when you boot to fastboot, you should be able to do the following:"
..............
This is the part you want to pay attention to, assuming you have the SDK installed properly. Our phones are actually MUCH easier to load others ROM on because we have those fastboot-enabled SPLs already in place and this is the first, BEST way for us to do it.
Whatever you do, do NOT flash the "Danger SPL". There is no need to for an HTC Magic with the Hboot 1.33.0004 (SAPP10000) SPL.
If you're hopelessly lost at this point, seek hands-on local help. You don't know enough to do this by yourself without risking screwing up. if no one can help you, then take your time. Learn the stuff you need to know....Being in a hurry is a great way to go wrong. I spent 3 months reading and thinking about it before I loaded my first ROM. Much of the advice is for the Dream / G1 or locked MyTouch3G or Magic 32B phone from telcos who lock them....and simply isn't relevant for the HTC Magic 32B from Vodafone. the single section I'm pointing you to above is all we need to get it done.
Finally, here is my own "simple guide" for getting loading alternate ROMs on a Vodafone HTC Magic 32B. This is about OUR phone...and should work if you work your way through it.
http://truthseekernz.blogspot.com/2009/11/simple-guide-to-loading-new-roms-on.html
You don't need to worry about "gold cards" and all that stuff. You'll be flashing an already rooted ROM and you will have backed up your un-rooted original load with "nandroid" before you change ANYTHING. That backup is your path back to the way your phone was before you rooted it by flashing an already rooted system ROM. in loading ROMs like Cyanogen's you're not baking a cake, you're buying one....so you don't need to know how to make one, you just need to know where to get one and how to serve it....if that analogy makes sense.
Simply, you start by: fastboot boot RA-recovery-1.5.2G.img:
Then, from the recovery menu of functions you do these steps:
1. Backup (nandroid)
2. Wipe system / data
3. Wipe cache
4. flash from any zip on sdcard (the one you want to flash today, you may have put several different ROM images in /sdcard)
5. reboot to brave new world.
6. Make a backup copy on your PC of the /sdcard/nandroid folder on your sdcard so you won't lose it accidentally if your sdcard is corrupted, lost or stolen.
Done.
To save time and let you backup / flash ROMs anywhere you happen to be standing, you can flash Amon-RA's recovery onto your phone or you can load it via fastboot every time and leave the default recovery in place. The very first nandroid backup you made will have backed up the factory recovery image as well as the factory system image as they were at the time you backed them up. So they can be restored if you want to at some point update them with an OTA update. I suspect Vodafone / HTC will be rolling out an Android 2.0 / 2.1 update to Magic phones at some point. If they don't that would be a black mark against them....something to remember when thinking about buying any future phone from anyone: "WILL THEY SUPPORT IT FOR THE SAME 2 YEARS YOU'VE SIGNED UP FOR".
If the answer isn't YES......then that's worth remembering. Vodafone / HTC's record so far is good. The last OTA update was barely 3 months ago.

Get latest version of fastboot binary. I had problems with original one and htc magic. Drop fastboot.exe into the sdk tools folder.
Reboot your phone holding back and power simultaneously.
Then plug usb cable.
in Dos prompt go to sdk tools folder and type "fastboot devices"
if your device is listed you are good to go.
then "fastboot boot cm-recovery-1.4.img"

Treo version

Hello everybody. I'm completely noob, so please have a little patience with me. I have a Treo 750 in italian, and my final goal is to flash it to wm6-english. But for start, i don't know what Treo i have. I read about Cingular, At&t, etc...
mine sais TREO750-1.16-H3I, h-ware version A, firmware version 1.27.0b.00.
So whom am i talking to every day? Is there a special version of wm6 for my phone?
I thought i'l start from here. Any help would be appreciated...
Ok... noone? At least tell me how I can figure if my phone is unlocked or unbrenched...
Or could someone point me to a tutorial-thread of flashing the phone... from the beginning to the end.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Cheetah_WM6
Maybe you'll find something around here for the beginning, ...
Stupi ... it doesn't matter which Treo you have when it comes to flashing ROMs.
Just do the HardSPL first. That way you can pick the English language ROM of your choice to flash and it will work. You also get the benefit of unlocking the phone so it can be used on any GSM network.
Ideally, you'd be best to pick an English ROM provided by the same company that provides your cellular service, but it is not required. If you pick one from another cell company (or a hacked one) then you might have to enter your network settings manually, but that's the only difficult part.
Plenty of resources in this forum. Do some searching and you'll find everything you need. Good luck!
One question, thought... i could'n find the answer on the forum. I downloaded the unlocher, but it sais it only works with spl 1.11, at least... Mine is 0.22.
I tried then to update with RUU_Hermes_QTEK_WWE_2.11.255.1_102_6275_1.38.00.10_108_Ship.exe, but in the "current information about your pda phone" it didn' recognize my pda. I got affraid of bricking it.
So, it seems to me my first problem is updating the spl from 0.22 to 1.11. But I cannot find the software to do this..
Come on men, this has to be simple. I need some help here, please. I'm stuck up with wm5 over a week now...
so, the first thimg I must do, a hard-spl, that's what I understood. This can be done with ceetah_unlocker.
Ok, i launch the application, and it sais it can't start only with 1.11 spl. Mine is 0.22.0000
So the first thing i have to do is update this 0.22 spl to 1.11. Am I right?
But how?
Find one of the WM6.0 desktop updaters and try installing that. They don't require a HardSPL first.
Use one of the following:
AT&T English: Treo750_2_25_ATT_EN_DesktopUpdater.zip
Rest of World English: Treo750_2_23_ROW_EN_DesktopUpdater.zip
Three Australia: Treo750_2_19_H3E_DesktopUpdater.zip
Vodaphone UK English: Treo750_2_18_VFU_DesktopUpdater.zip
I don't have any links as they aren't hosted by Palm anymore. You should be able to find them by looking around the XDA Forum, or by searching the net and/or torrent sites for the filenames above.
thanks a lot, man, but I lost my pathience and i run the cheetah_unlocker... and I didn't brick it. So, now I'm ready for the next step...
please, if anyone pm me with a win 6...
ok, my spl is ok (1.4), i put the CHEEIMG.nbh on my sd card, and I run the step 1 of cheetah unlocker. And nothing happens.. still boots with wm5. I even did a hard reset.
Man, i'm goig crazy... what am i missing?
Please, someone could upload again one of those 4 files? I could find neither of them with goolge.
So, i found the updater, but it won't update my phone since it's in italian...
guess I'll need to do it the hard way. Please, can someone point me a post or a tutorial to update from 5.0 to 6?

I must be missing something. I made those steps, all went ok. But how the heck do i change the windows version? That's my goal, not to flash the spl.
I got a win 6 image (i hope, at least), copied the CHEEIMG.nbh file on the card (which is fat 32), and i repeated step one from cheetah-unlocker. As I hoped that after flashing the new windows would automatically install. But nothing happened, the old win was up and running.
Come on man, I'm not such a bad person after all to deserve this... I may have killed a few birds or cats in my childhood, but this is too much... you're killing me.. I'm stuck in this spagetti windows, and I can't upgrade to a normal english windows... what the heck am i missing?
well, if you haven't gotten it sorted by now, hope this helps: once you've hard spl'd, put the new image that you want to flash in the root on your card [<2gb, fat32 formatted] and then hold media and push reset. your phone will cycle into the bootloader [rgb screen], detect the image and ask if you want to flash.

[Q] Explain (not with a HOWTO!) Goldcard, Bootloader, SPL, RUU, CID to me

Ok, so I'm not all that new to this rooting thing, I've rooted several HTC Magics, a Nexus One, helped out on a Legend, rooted a Hero and managed to install Android on an HTC Tytn II.
I'm getting used to the different terms about rooting and I'll recite them for you so you know where I'm at.
My Question/Request for you all is to help me figuring out what all these words mean and how they correspond/correlate/work together.
=== Things I have understood almost completely ===
Root
As in Linux, gives a user or script the permission to write to otherwise protected partitions and file systems of the handset.
Recovery
A partition(?) that manages some tasks involved with the basic building blocks of the system, such as installing/flashing different partitions/parts of the handset. Also has the ability to wipe the data-partition as well as Dalvik-cache.
Bootloader/HBOOT/SPL
A partition(?) that fires up the basic buildingblocks on the handset. Such as recovery, OS, and whatnot. With Fastboot-commands it's possible to flash partitions, as long as the bootloader allows remote writing through command-line.
=== Things I've almost completely understood ===
CID
CarrierID. This is when a mobile phone network carrier "locks" the phone to a specific network. But this also means that the carrier hands out updates to the Android-system installed on the handset? And the only way of updating a factory-state handset is by getting hold of updates from the carrier?
RUU
ROM Update Utility. Used by HTC to update their manufactured handsets. There might be other manufacturers who use this abbreviation, but I've seen it used almost exclusively in regards to HTC. There are checks being made when trying to install a RUU-package on the handset. These are/could be(?)
* Current RUU version already installed (if the RUU-package that is being installed is older, the installation quits)
* Current CID (If the CID in the RUU doesn't match the CID on the handset, the installation quits)
=== Things that confuse me ===
Goldcard
This is a modified SD card that supposedly bypasses the CID/RUU-check. Now, this to me sounds like I can install any RUU no matter what version I currently have installed on my handset and no matter what CID my handset came with.
This also sounds to me that I can potentially install a Desire RUU on my HTC Magic, if it is true that the RUU/CID-check is bypassed by the goldcard.
This also sounds to me that the requirement for a newer RUU-version of the package I'm installing is bypassed. For instance, I will, if I use a goldcard, be able to install a RUU-package with the version 1.28 on a handset that currently have version 1.31 installed?
Reverting a root
Is it as easy as grabbing the latest official RUU-update from HTC:s website and install that? Does it contain all the partitions and system-files necessary to restore the handset to a factory-state? Or will there be complications because of the root and different custom-ROM:s and custom-recoveries that are on the handset?
Shameless bump. SOMEONE has to know this. Or this is such common knowledge that there is a wikipedia article and I missed it?
If I only get an answer to my Goldcard questions I'd be real thankful.
Sounds to me like you have a very good grasp of all these things. It's nice, but rare, to see people doing their own research and learning this much before posting questions!
There's nothing i can add really but to confirm that ,yes...flashing a stock ROM will revert changes although some devices can be picky with which stock ROM is best.
As an aside, have you considered doing development work yourself, perhaps ROM building? You're obviously capable, interested and 'have the right stuff'!

Well, thank you. I'm slowly beginning to get used to doing as much research as I can get by with and provide what I know, or at least think I've been able to conclude, and then ask a question about it.

When you say flashing a stock ROM, would this also apply for RUU-packages? As an example; If I have an HTC Hero and I manage to downgrade it through som root-method, will I be able to run an official HTC-provided RUU to get it back to a factory state?
The only way I have been able to return my Nexus One to a factory state is by the use of a PASSIMG.zip-file, but then I would have to make sure that I am using the stock recovery. One reason for my question is that I'd also like to know if it's possible to run an RUU-package on a rooted, and/or custom recovery-flashed and/or engineering SPL-flashed handset and have it returned to a factory state.

Well, sure, the thought has struck me once or twice. I'm currently in my last months of my education in becoming a Master in Software Engineering, but at the moment I'm into getting to know more about how Android works on different handsets and how the different parts are connected to each other. I will very soon dive into Android development as it's the only really interesting area for handsets/mobile communication, that doesn't have the price of a whole Apple Macintosh to even be able to begin programming for it.
I'm sure I will get an Apple suite later on, I like the diversities of different manufacturers but for the time being I'm price conscious.
Is there anyone who knows a thing or two about Goldcards?
One of my questions in the first post was about the CID/RUU-relation to the Goldcard.
I have read from one or maybe two people on random forums, stating that the Goldcard is _only_ needed when the handset is carrier-locked. I'm very interested in getting to know more about the Goldcard and when it is supposed to be used and/or required.
Because a lot of the times when dealing with rooting HTC handset it boils down to having a Goldcard or not. But at times I hear about methods where Goldcards aren't needed. But the statements differ from "You need a goldcard" to "You only need a Goldcard when your handset is CID-locked" to "You need a Goldcard to be able to flash an RUU that is older than the one you currently have on your handset." to "You need a Goldcard if you want to flash an RUU with a different CID" to "You don't need a Goldcard at all".
Somehow I think there are some kind of specific combinations, for instance something like this;
CID-locked handset => Needs a Goldcard to be able to root
RUU-version on the handset is new => Needs a Goldcard to be able to flash older RUU-version
RUU/CID-combination is X and Y => Needs a Goldcard to be able to flash an RUU that has the RUU/CID-combination A and B
...
...
There are times when some rooting methods do not require a Goldcard at all, but it seems to me they are pretty rare when compared to those who require a Goldcard.
Someone out there should have the whole story about this and I'm very interested to know how these things work and I'm also grateful for sharing this with me.

Windows Phone 10 on HTC One M8

I did something really dumb even though I was advised not to. I managed to get the Windows Phone 10 Technical Preview on my HTC One M8 for Windows. The OS version that got pushed to it simply is not compatible with this hardware and so many things don't work. I want to go back but the Microsoft-provided recovery tool doesn't detect the phone because it was never intended to work with this model. In short, my question is does anyone have a way to just flash an HTC One M8 for Windows back to the factory T-Mobile ROM that it came with out of the box? If so, where do I get it and how can I flash to it? HTC has no recovery tool to speak of for this phone, Microsoft was just as much help, and TMo wants me to pay an insurance deductible before they will replace the thing. I will be ever so grateful if someone can help out.
Thanks!

Generally I think you are out of luck until they launch the Windows 10TP for HTC M8's. When that happens, you should be able to use the Windows Phone Recovery Tool to re-flash your phone. It looks like it's basically a re-skinned version of the Lumia Software Recovery tool, and it only makes sense for them to release this as well if they are going to be providing a way to recover and flash non-Lumia branded phones in the future.
There is a way to re-flash the HTC One M8 for Windows if you have the ROM, but so far only the Verizon version has leaked. I hope this is not your only phone, because if you wait a month or so you should be able to re-flash using the Microsoft tool
You have absolutely no right to be mad at Microsoft, HTC and/or T-Mobile for the problems. They are completely justified making you pay the deductible to get this fixed, why should they eat the cost of fixing it?
Don't get me wrong, I don't blame anyone but myself for this. I'm simply surprised that there isn't a recovery option out there in general. Someone could have a problem that isn't their fault at all that could benefit from having this. That being said, I have an open ticket with the HTC dev team. All I really want is access to a ROM that must clearly already exist. The software got on the phone in the first place, right? Of course I am not a dev and probably have no idea what I'm talking about. I apologize if I'm coming off as an ass looking for a hand out. It just seems to me that this is a simple issue with a simple fix. I know from when I had a Lumia device that I could open up the navifirm+ software and download any ROM for any windows phone from any region of the world.

Fair enough. Its a bit weird that only Nokia put out any kind of program to re-flash phones, but I have a feeling that the app Microsoft has put out will, going forward, be used to reflash any Windows Phone that is having problems. They kind of need to provide that functionality if they are going to take control of the update process from the carriers (which i know they want to do, whether they actually pull it off remains to be seen).
I'd say just hang in there, you will likely be able to re-flash in a month or so. I hope you can somehow get access to the rom, but there isn't program released to flash it on the phone (though there are ways, look at the Verizon RUU thread. There is also a Youtube video out there showing how to do it)
i was the first with htc w8 (tmous) to hack the w10 beta on it if you check my twitter.
the only reason why i even considered to do this is because i have a way out.
that can't be said for public. so why the hell you didn't check if you have
a way to go back to stock before even considering such a highly
experimental thing to your precious device?
sure you can't expect any support from ms or tmous for that scenario.
i flashed back to w81 the next day already because of htc related bugs.
i will restore it for you if you send it to me and pay 2-way shipping.
this is a one time personal offer from me that i will do for you.
contact me via pm if you didn't send it in yet.
let this be a lesson to you guys...

You might be out of luck for now at the moment. I'm sure the TMo ROMS aren't available, otherwise you would be able to. Remember that the trick to update to Windows 10 Preview was AT YOUR OWN RISK due the fact that the phone isn't OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED

Is it possible to flash the stock rom on a verizon phone?
sure. by stock rom i mean the original rom meant for the device/carrier.
on verizon w8 -> verizon rom
on at&t w8 -> at&t rom
on tmous w8 -> tmous rom
don't try to flash different carrier rom. it won't work.
all 3 carrier variants have different modelID which is checked before allowing flash.

there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55201370&postcount=2
download the htc RUU that i attached to this post and extract with winrar.
place the htc w8 verizon nbh in the extracted RUU folder with filename "RUU_Signed.nbh".
then go into bootloader (power off, then hold vol-&vol+ while pressing power until it vibrates).
it will show white bootloader screen with hardware info.
when the pc installed the drivers for bootloader mode it switches from "serial" to "usb" on the bottom.
then doubleclick the ROMUpdateUtility.exe and it will flash the phone.
everything will be wiped of course.

The latest build of Win10 works way better on a One M8 btw. I have installed it using the registry method and running it without many problems. So if you have a t-mobile/at&t version of this phone (where there is no RUU availible) with windows 10 installed i advice upgrading to the latest build.
really? i noticed bugs with background picture not showing and many htc apps/settings not working..
they work now on latest build?
in the new version of windows phone recovery tool, ms added support for htc devices.

I downloaded the newest version, 2.0.3, of the recovery tool. Even though it says it supports HTC devices it still fails to rollback my Verizon HTC M8. I receive the error: "Software Package is not found on server"
This is after the tool recognizes my device and asks me to restart in boot-loader mode.
Anyone else have success with using ver. 2.0.3 with a HTC M8?

Recognized my T-Mobile M8 and flashed WP8.1 successfully.
Not able to update to latest Windows 10 mobile TP build
My HTC One is currently on 10.0.12562.84 (Build 10080). For some reason I am not able to see the latest build 10.0.12648.133 (Build 10149). Any one able to update to the latest build. Any idea why I'm not seeing it still?
Tried using the phone recovery tool to flash back to 8.1 but it says no builds available.
