[Q] Noob with a tough decision - General Questions and Answers

Hi all,
I'm new to some of this and hope you can help with a decision i have to make.
I have a 2007 For Fiesta ST and im wanting to ditch the standard double DIN head unit in favour of something a little more up to date. I have a few choices and was hoping you may be able to help me choose based on your own personal experience etc.
My Choices are as follows:-
Replace the standard head unit for an Android/Other OS head unit with touch screen interface.
Custom build an Android based Car PC with 7" touchscreen (ODROID or similar)
Adapt a Tablet with various bits and bobs and install it into the dash permanently, i have a Galaxy Tab 2 but wouldnt mind getting a Nexus 7.
Now, these have various pros and cons, mainly down to cost, ease of installation, availability of parts/modules and my very basic knowledge of compiling custom kernels.
EDIT. I better add a list of features to help with replies. I need FM radio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, decent storage capacity (min 16gb), GPS for satnav and USB inputs
Please help
Bri.

No matter, i ended up buying a 2012 Nexus 7 3G for my install. It came with 4.4.2 installed.
My next question is, i tried installing Timurs USB ROM onto it after i rooted it but when it had finished, it had regressed Android to 4.2.2. Are there any later versions of the USB ROM that allow installing on a 2012 N7 whilst keeping Android 4.4.2?
Thanks again,
Bri.

[Q] touch pro 2 rebooting on Android, and two other issues

I recently put the FR0X7 Xdandroid on my CDMA Sprint HTC Touch Pro 2, and I am very happy with it. I am astounded by the technological possibilities of these little devices. The only annoying thing my phone has started doing since I've begun to run it in Android exclusively is reboot itself. I am not sure if I did something wrong when I installed it. I have looked at this forum for weeks, and I am having trouble figuring out which advice given is now out of date and might have changed with the new version of this froyo. A lot of stuff I'm finding is from 2010.
So, my first question is if anyone knows if there is a way to keep it from rebooting like this. It's a real drain on the battery.
Which brings me to the second question. The battery drains a lot faster than it does in WinMo. I don't know if this is because it's running on the SD card or not. I have made a lot of changes to the settings based on advice here, so I don't know if there's anything else I can do.
I remember seeing threads stating that the bluetooth worked now. I have the RHOD400 startup, and on mine, bluetooth won't even turn on. So, I got the handsfree set that plugs into the headphone jack, but I've used two different ones, and both of them didn't have working mics on my phone, so I don't know if that's something related to the Android build or not. Has anyone run into this? I really need a handsfree device of some kind to work because of the new driving law in my city.
I should probably have said I use Gen Y Dual Boot to boot Android instead of the Haret.exe file.

RoyaDroidally Screwed-Cortex A9 1.5GHz Duel Core stuck inside an ICRAIG Tablet CLP288

Hey,
So I have a tablet that was given to my daughter but was pretty useless out of the box last year. Its an ICRAIG powered by a Cortex A9 Duel Core 1.5 GHz 4G flash memory with the capacity to hold a 32G SD card to serve as an extension of that initial 4G. Now basically to a novice but trying to learn person like me the deal was kind of like: ICRAIG took some older cheaper cell phone android tech (It runs off 4.2 and upgrades only to 4.4 I believe) and shoved in into a tablet without modifying the firmware to support the new form. For instance the keyboard that's actually pretty standard in appearance is impossible to choose as an option and its default is the cellular keyboard option Android uses.
I have managed to root it using KingRoot app and Ive hooked it up to my computer to verify that Droid Drive works on it and it does, my computer recognizes the device as a CD. I am planning to flash over a different OS to take over the device and not use the Android platform at all. More specifically Kali Linux because I feel that will be a good way for me to learn coding and white hat pen testing as well along my path to a new career and because being stuck without working after it consumed my life for 18 years (Which means since I was 16, so my whole life) or the ability to drive has made me horribly bored to the point I'm trying to find, fix, refurbish, rig together anything I can without spending a fortune doing it with limited income. Broken neck, 3 places actually, is why I'm a bit stuck finding a career/hobby suitable to someone with limited movement. Not complaining or whining just telling you Androidians why I'm trying to replace your software of choice.
So is there anything I should know before attempting this backwards "burn" to reformat the tablet. Like just find an applicable ARM image on Kali.org? Should I just wipe it clean and rebuild from nothing or from the kernel at least? or wasting my time with this approach and just need to wipe it and use it as doorstop? I would keep Android and use a Linux Deploy approach but due to the keyboard not functioning and the lack of touch screen I feel the onscreen keyboard I have to use now would not be suitable to a VM style approach. Also hoping it I can just replace the OS I can then find the applicable drivers for things like the keyboard. I'm not sure if I should pull off all software except Droid Drive to the USB the device will hold and then flash or keep certain files (for instance whatever file may hold the drivers and kernel) or some of the build in apps? Etc Etc. You see where I'm going here. Replace the existing OS with Kali and any pointers with using Drive Droid or any other way you all think I could approach this better even if its flashing Damn Small Linux first and building up or just working of the Linux sites to build my own image kernel and all....I would appreciate any advice and I'm heading over to read Droid Drive info now. Ive just recently had time or interest in computing since I used my Blackberry or iPhone for any computing I needed or work computers on their own network. So until about a month ago the last system rebuild I did was on a Gateway running Windows 97 or so.
Thanks Androidians I'm off to start an online Android course now actually.

Stripping down a phone to its bare minimum

I learned about BOINC for android recently and since I have some old smart phones lying around which are never used I thought why not put them to some use. I could of course directly install BOINC on them and get going but of course if its the only thing that is going to run then it will be a waste of a lot of hardware resources.
As of now I know only very little about rooting and the Linux OS and also my phones are not on the list for most rooting software. I have thought of two approaches to this.
First route is to root, install a very lightweight Android ROM and strip off all system apps/services/etc until I am left with the bare minimum required to run Android. Since I'll probably need to compile the ROM myself I might do some stripping off at the source code level itself if possible/practical.
Second route would be more interesting but I'm not sure if its even possible. This basically entails removing Android entirely and replacing it by a lightweight desktop Linux (such as DSL) with an external keyboard+mouse using the phone as display and processor.
The BOINC is going to run 24x7 with the phones always on charge. The keyboard and mouse will only be attached while installing the software and for checking things are fine once in a while...so I have no issues with them using up the charger slot and Bluetooth.
Which do you think would be the best option in this situation?

Android Navigation(Car Android radio)

Hi there people,
Wondering if anyone is developing roms for android car radios, I've got one in my car(Seat Ibiza 2012/03) and from what I've seen the same device applies to many Volkwagen group cars(skoda, seat, audi, volkwagen etc).
My device says model S07 and it's having Android 4.4, it works quite fast for it's 1GB of ram but it's suppose to as it's pure android(no extra crap or anything, just the basic)
I've asked the seller(Chinese dude, very friendly and he's not disappeared as others do) if there's an update or anything, he told me that there's a new version(hardware one) of this radio that has newer android but also costs 500+ euros. Well I'm not going to do that as the radio works mostly fine(sometimes, rare bug but it happens, if it doesn't boot completely and it's in the process, if I start the car it might stuck in the Seat logo(you can chance the logo to many brands from inside the android menu, it's just the boot logo)
Any thoughts
(I've attach a picture - not from my car but it's exactly the same)

Android head unit roms for tablet besides timurs kernel?

Hi,
I really like the idea of installing a tablet in my car, in place of a head unit. The only rom/kernel i have seen dedicated to this seems to be Timurs Kernel. There is rom development for android head unit devices (usually Chinese ones), but what i'm looking for is essentially a continuation of timurs kernel development but perhaps for a more modern tablet than the nexus 7? Does this exist?
The Android head units also seem to have some features baked into their roms which i cannot really replicate on the tablet that i really would like. the largest example here, would be an android rom that behaves as a Bluetooth receiver, so i can connect my phone to the tablet, where it is simply a slave device to the phone.
I really want to avoid getting a Chinese head unit, and would love to have a nice looking tablet, without a resolution of the standard 1024x800. I am aware of the app 'Headunit' reloaded which makes a tablet/phone a slave device to any phone running the android auto app, but the latency and smoothness of operation is rather disappointing. Could anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks
