[Q] Heart Rate Monitor doesn't work on dark skin - Samsung Gear 2

Has anyone heard of this or have test to see if it's true? I want to get a G2n but I've read that that the heart rate monitor doesn't work on dark skin and that Samsung is aware of this.

Give the heart rate monitor app in the play store a try, it uses your camera flash and the camera to record pulse. Should be similar. Also, at&t stores have floor models for you to try out!

Lol u serious??

I'm QUITE white and I have problems getting it to read sometimes... ;-]

Same problem
My Gear 2 DOES NOT WORK, I have exchanged 2 of them. I'm not even that dark. I'm a good brown and it works 0 percent of the time... I see a class action lawsuit in Samsung future (or a simple software update).. for a item that does not work as advertised.

It is far from an exact science. Shine light into skin, measure the time between changes of color, calculate.
It also will not be the only heart rate option out there. It's stock software used to enhance the product. The real power comes with the installed apps.
I'm sure it's more of a software thing than a hardware thing, especially if you've already taken two of them back. Either wait for a new heart rate app or try and roll your own.
If you purchased the watch specifically for the heart rate capabilities, you may want to return it and wait until the product has had time to mature.
Good luck to you.

Thanks everyone for your feed back. I ended up getting the G2N and it works on my lite skin. This smartwatch is amazing. True happy with my purchase.

I have same issue. But don't really mind its not a feature I plan to use a lot or at all. Funny as I'm in the health field.

But when I really want to take a cigarette, I find some terrible pictures, focus on these picture, think very hard about it, then It works
It's important that you should think very seriously when looking at these pictures.

I smoke for 8 years.
I know most smokers already know the risk.
But at the very moment that they decide to take a cigarette, this understanding gone, they only think about satisfication.
So I bring this understanding return to them, by showing some very terrible picture can reduce that addiction at this moment.
I know it's not enough. But it can gain something INSTANTLY.
Howlong did you smoke johny? Would you quit?
Smoked about 3-4 years. Quit about 6 months ago and I feel fricken great. But I do use smokless tobacco. So I didnt really quit. I coild quit dip as the addiction isnt even close to cigs. But I enjoy it and ill do it for a little bit longer.

1000s of potential uses above and beyond cell phone technology. Can you imagine a firearm that has an NFC unit in the handle that only will fire if the shooter has the correctly coded NFC ring? A car that will only start if a person with an NFC ring pushes a button to start it? Yea, it's not perfect, but the potential is there.

Ditto. I don't even wear my wedding ring, but I backed the Alpha one a a few weeks ago and besides it being thicker it kind of looks like my wedding ring, haha.
BUT, here’s my concern for us S4 owners. Have you ever watched John McLear’s (NFC Ring creator) video of him unlocking the Nexus 7? The beauty of this video is that not only can it unlock and bypass a PIN (as I’ve been able to do with the S4 in my video), but once your NFC ring is removed it locks it back up! I couldn’t find any NFC mods that enable “NFC Removal” detection for the S4 yet so I’m wondering how McLear plans to package the ring.
OK. Just did a little digging and found that they now have an Xposed mod for this. I’LL BE TRYING THIS OUT THIS MORNING! Hopefully it works.
that thing is cool. never even knew there are so many nfc functions.

So Tapatalk 4 is out and Im on the fence about it. .99c is a killer deal however when I took a look at the reviews it was really mixed. A lot of people say it isnt loading forums/topics quickly. However it still has a 4.3 star overall rating. I did purchase the app and tried it for a few minutes to discover similar issues. (Im running the beta / 3rd version now). It did look a lot different then the beta though. Has anyone else tried it? What are your thoughts? Do you feel its slower than the beta?
I just bought it myself and truthfully I don't see much difference than the public release version.. :S not having the problems others are on the reviews but I'm on WiFi :<

Any other black people or darker skin having trouble with the heart rate monitor?

Before I start I have to say I tried to make this as "HR" appropriate as possible. I just think this might be a problem. I have noticed that my heart rate monitor doesnt seem to like darker people. I have tested it on numerous light skinned or white people and I have found that it takes between 1-2 times before we get a reading. Meanwhile darker skinned people it takes anywhere between 4-6 times if at all to get a reading. I have tried different positions for the watch like moving it up the arm and putting it on the underside of my wrist and still no better results. Is anyone else having this issue or am I just crazy?
Racist smart watches eh? I'm light skin and it works fine. Wayans light skin with no tan

Are you taking your measurement on the top or bottom of your wrist?
Sent from my DynamicKat Note 3!
Ha!! Aw man I thought it was just me!!! Im darkskin and the heart rate monitor hardly ever works but when it does its on the underside of my wrist. Even when its on the underside of my wrist I have to be really steady and quite and it takes a while but eventually it will work. My wife is light skin and it works on her like a charm.
While it is VERY unfortunate if Samsung did not test this sufficiently with different skin types, I will add that even on pale skin you have to keep still for a good reading. It is absolutely not suitable for continuous monitoring while running despite what Samsung may have suggested. You get all sorts of crazy readings, or wrong readings. If you really want continuous heart rate monitoring you need to use a Bluetooth chest strap (many options for this that work with Samsung fitness) but it means using it in conjunction with the phone rather than the watch.
I was wondering why Samsung chose a green LED for the light source under the watch. I would have thought being near to the infra-red band (i.e. red) would have coped better with various skin types.
I find it easier to get a reading on the under side of the wrist, pretty much right under the Palm of my hand

Do you think that is because the underside of your wrist is lighter skinned or because the blood vessels are nearer the surface of the skin? I still find it incredible that Samsung didn't think of this issue. Heart rate monitors are not new in watches. Casio did this in the 90s!
