Hey there friendly devs,
I have found myself in quite a conundrum:
http://imgur.com/h7SqfXT
My phone looks like this^^
It is rooted, has TWRP on it, I can plug it in, the LED lights up, I can click the buttons, but it doesn't appear mounted on my computer. As the screen is completely broken, I can't change the mounting options on the phone.
Is there any way I can get the data off the internal SD card?
Without being able to see what you're doing I don't see how you'd be able to retrieve anything from the device.

Is there any way to manually take the internal card out? Or access fastboot or adb without clicking anything on the screen?
Fastboot won't be any help. But if by chance you have no screen security setup, and you have usb debugging already enabled in Developer Options you could use adb commands to copy data from the device.

Try adb pulling internal sd. Not sure if it'd work but hey, worth a shot

Long story short, my phone incurred water damage as a result of going into a pool, and after using rice to dry it out, the phone works perfectly, with one exception: the touchscreen doesn't work at all, and I think it's permanently broken. It still displays everything (my lockscreen, background, notification bar, etc...) but I can't slide to unlock or touch the buttons or anything. I used the System Information screen from the bootloader menu (I rooted using Ace's guide) and that said "TOUCH PANEL-fail". I have insurance through SquareTrade, so I'm not worried about the phone itself, but I'd like to get my data off of it.
When I plug it into my computer using the USB cable, the computer recognizes that I plugged something in and other computers automatically detect the drivers and install them, but I can't get my phone to show up in the file system where USB drives and other things normally show up (Computer or My Computer). My friend told me that there's a hardware-only way to switch into USB mode on an iPhone, and I was wondering if there's a similar trick to do it on the Inspire. If there were such a thing, would I be able to use it to get all of my data off of my phone? Is there a way to switch the Inspire to USB mode through hardware alone? If so, how do I do it?

You could boot it up into 4ext or cmw and enable usb storage from there to transfer files off of it. When off, hold power and down on your volume until the boot menu pops up, then boot into recovery. within recovery has your option to enable usb mass storage mode
I tried that and couldn't find a menu option that worked - I tried going to "mounts and storage" and then "mount USB storage", but it said:
AHK ClockworkMod Recovery v4.0.1.4
E:Unable to write to ums lunfile (No such file or directory)
What did I do wrong?

You could try this....

Maybe this is just thinking outside the box... but since you are mounting the mass storage device you are trying to get data off the micro SD Card. Couldn't you just take the micro SD card out? That's all of your data. Then if security is your issue run the following commands in adb. This will make your phone unbootable. So I am not sure if that will mess with your insurance claim.
adb shell
su
format SYSTEM
format DATA
format CACHE

haha I'm not quite that clueless - I removed the SD card and got all of that data off, but I want to try to get anything that's directly on the phone off as well. I'll look into both of those methods and let you guys know if either of them work, thanks!
in recovery just create backup, it goes to sd card..
then on your new indentical phone just restore.
DJ_MiX, I think that sounds like a really good, easy solution - would I be able to restore the files to a different phone? I'm thinking about getting the Galaxy Nexus as a replacement, but I'm open to getting another HTC Inspire if it would be the only way to preserve all of my data.

What recovery do u have?
Pull the battery, then power up to boot loader or recovery so u can use volume buttons to navigate and power button to select ur way to "mounts and storage" and turn on USB mode.
If u cannot see anything at all then let us know what recovery u have so we can tell u how many volume button clicks u need to do and when to hit the volume button.
I use clock mod, so I can only help u if u have that... but someone else will come along to assist with the other recovery.
Good luck

hey thank you for answering i almost sure that i have ClockworkMod Recovery...
so what i need to do ?
Do you per chance remember the version? Was it touch recovery or not? This changes how many clicks you have to do. I've helped a few people with that, but it's important you try to remember or find out which one you have so we can help you. Otherwise I can give you both directions, but there's always the slight possiblity you'll end up doing something wrong.
i think it was 5.1 if im not worng.. no touch thats 4 sure

And if you unplug it then replug it, does the drive disappear then re-appear? Just to make sure it's the right removable disk and not another one.
Edit: You need to unplug and replug once you have navigated to the right section in CWM.
yes tried that, didnt work.. and he did that only in the first time

I cannot take screenshots in recovery, you know.
For the computer part, I'm at work and I have very little time. I help people in between actions here and there.
Once you can boot into CWM and connect the phone to computer, there is a possible chance to use ADB to copy files to and from the phone. Copy the entire 'sdcard' contents by typing:
adb pull /data/media C:\backup\
*you'll have to create a directory called backup first.
any alternative way please ??

Don't boot in CWM for adb though, just fastboot (VOL+ & PWR).
There's not much we can do for you azulay4u if you can't manage to navigate and mount the USB nor do you want to ADB pull your data. :/
Hi All -
Not a good day for me at all I installed one of the latest Stock Odexed ROM. Then for some reason I wanted to reinstall it so went to Touch v6.0.1.5 recovery and wiped everything without taking nandroid back up as I was 100% sure that I have all my different ROMs in my external card. Then after wiping the device when I went to my external card to install the ROM I found nothing in there !!! Total phone wiped out !!! Now cant even go to Download Mode to install a ROM using odin. Tried adb reboot download but still No luck. Cant go to download mode. May be my USB cable or PC has issues, wont detect my phone right now every time I want to go to download mode it goes to recovery mode. Hence cant install any ROM. Please help !!!
I also installed the Samsung USB driver but still my PC wont detect my phone.
My device is Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket.
You help is highly appreciated.
Thanks.
If you can still access recovery just DL another ROM and flash it. I must be missing something here. Is the phone usable?
Most likely it's the OP that's missing something, being in panic.
OP, get an SD card, load any ROM on it, insert it into your phone, boot to recovery, install ROM, profit.

Smart idea !!! I am so dumb, this idea didnt come to my head But currently cant do it because there is no way I can access (read/ write) the Micro SD card so that I can trasfer a ROM there and install it by going to the recovery. Any idea? I dont have the card reader.
Does the phone still boot to OS?

Thanks buddy but the problem is I cant access my Micro USB Card. The phone doesnt boot and gets stuck at the SAMSUNG logo.
In both TWRP and CWM recoveries you have "Mount USB storage" option.
Connect your phone to PC with USB cable, use that option, and copy the ROM right on your USB storage.
Or grab a card reader for $1 from eBay To have one just in case. Or use any other phone (family/friends) for copying the ROM on the SD card. So many options...

Thats the only option I see Jack_R1, either buy a card reader or use friends one. I tried Mount USB Storage before but nothing happened. And other issue I have been having for last few weeks is - my PC wont detect my phone, it says unrecognized device or something. So I have been using FTP for transferring ROM and other files to my phone.
But I will try with a card either for now. Hope that helps otherwise will need guidance from expert ppl like you all.
Thanks again. Appreciate for your quick responses.
You said in the OP that you tried adb reboot download. So do you have adb installed? If so have you installed the google drivers?? Here's the link:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
If you don't have them installed do so. Then type:
Code:
adb devices
You might need to exit SDK manager and reboot your comp before it shows. Also there is a program called usbdeview you can DL to remove any drivers you have installed that might coflict.
Never heard of having recovery but not download.... Sure you don't have a usb cable/connection problem?

He most probably has a problem with USB port - requiring some cleaning (and hopefully nothing more). Likely one of the data (D+/D-) pins isn't connecting.

Jack_R1 - what is the best way to clean the USB port? I will keep you posted if driver clean up and re-installation helps to detect the phone or not.
Toothpick and gently going over all contacts inside the socket.
Prying up on the prong ever so gently(it really don't take much) with a toothpick worked for me. Although now that I think about it, the toothpick may have just helped clean it ^^^

Hi all,
To start with, I'm in India and tried to unlock my Verizon S3.. at first, got it rooted, tried to unlock, didn't work and it caused a bunch of connection problems, etc. with the phone, so I did a factory reset, thinking it would wipe the problems I was having.
Lost some files I forgot were on my internal memory I needed, so I wanted to do a file recovery. During this process, I re-downloaded the drivers for the S3 I needed and then found that my phone would connect, but wouldn't connect as a driver and only as a media source. So the recovery software can't find the device to inspect. Even when I debugged, it would only register as a bootloader and wouldn't recognize it as anything more.
I'm trying to figure out what other steps I need to take to either remove something that I tampered with before the factory reset, or if I need to install something new to configure my device to register as a driver, or do something else I can't figure out?
And I'm still trying to recover those files from before the factory reset too.
Anyone have any suggestions? I can explain in more detail if needed.
Thanks for all the help!

You may be out of luck. When google went to Android 4.x, they switched to the MTP protocol which mounts the phone to the computer as a media device, rather than a mass storage device (as in previous versions of Android). As far as I can tell, devs have only been able to figure out how to get the external SD card to be seen as mass storage (and that's built into a rom, not a stand alone mod, I believe).
Is there any file recovery software/app available for Android that you can install directly on the phone, rather than needing to run it from a computer?
Well, that's not a good sign. But I will check into the direct software to the phone and let you know I find anything.
Thanks for the tip!

Can't you just use adb shell to see what you need and use adb pull to get everything. Somewhat tedious, but unless you can do mass storage or have another way set up, I don't see how. Although I'm not an expert
in fact i have to confirm the usb command prompt as seen in the attachement and this is not easy to do with a black screen
