[Q] Battery pff.. should I root? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'm a new Nexus 5 owner and I come from the HTC One S (which is known for a terrible battery). Although, my battery on the Nexus 5 is even worse compared to my setup on the HTC One S. With light use, I'm glad to get around 10-12 hours of it.
Is it worth rooting battery wise? I mean, are there roms / kernals that significantly improve battery life? I'm no gamer, but I do browse and use social media apps..
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Flash another kernel or rom will not obviously improve your battery life. Battery life depends mainly of your use, apps, settings (like screen brightness, synchro), data signal quality, etc... and even more the rom has nothing to do with your battery life.
For example if you have an app with a ton of wakelocks, flashing another kernel or another rom will not do better... You use social media apps, in general the battery drain can come from them.
Maybe in first you should identify the cause of your battery drain, no? Post your battery history for example and use Better Battery Stats: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809.
You said "10-12 hours" but what about the sreen ON time?

Thanks for your comment.. I just purchased better battery stats to monitor my battery!

Just to add, rooting isn't necessary to flash a custom kernel. Rooting itself shouldn't change battery life at all

To get things straight.. flashing a custom kernel only requires the bootloader to be unlocked or?

That's correct
Sent from my Nexus 5

To give an update on my current situation:
52% battery left (7 hours and 24 minutes since charge).
Screen on time: 1 hour, 54 minutes.

I would say you are in the average, but without knowing more details, hard to tell more...
Wi-Fi?
3G/4G?
Good signal quality?
Screen brightness?
Synchro?
Etc...

That extrapolates to almost 4 hours sot. That's not bad. Franco kernel can probably get you a bit more.

WiFi's on, even in sleeping mode.. not scanning.. no message on 'open networks' & WiFi optimalisation's on too.
No bluetooth
NFC off
Location reporting & history off, Location mode is on 'battery save' mode.
4G turned off as is drained even more.. now usually in 3G with decent coverage I think
Screen brightness is between 15 - 20%, sleeping mode after 30 seconds and no day dreaming & default Nexus wallpaper.
Google Now's on
Optimised synchronisation
Most sounds disabled, mostly on 'quiet' mode.
Running ART

[*]Location reporting & history off, Location mode is on 'battery save' mode. <-Turn this off. It doesn't save battery well. Call it a "feature".
[*]WiFi's on, even in sleeping mode.. not scanning.. no message on 'open networks' & WiFi optimalisation's on too. <-Go under Advanced in Wi-Fi options (hit the little menu button) and there's an extra setting to scan while Wi-Fi is off, turn this off.
Those two things plus turning off the "Ok Google" may help. Also do you have the camera battery usage bug?

You're getting average times for your setup.
If you want to get more, check out the battery thread and read through it a bit.

You can check how much battery life your device has left by doing one of the following options:
Use Quick Settings or View the battery graph.
However root manually if possible because rooting itself doesn't change battery life at all. Bettery life generally depends on our Apps that we are using on our Smart phones.
Roms / Kernals will not improve your battery life.

Samsung crams SO many features into their phone I doubt you or really anyone uses all of them regularly (it's not like you can't turn anything you want back on). Also some of these are just temporary when you really need to conserve power; like Power Saver, which really degrades the performance of the processor and GCU or switching to 2g data.
Tip No. 11 Turn your Phone Off...
Thanks a lot.. But if turn off the device saves a lot of battery jeje.

- Turn off mobile data when you're not using it. This can save you about 3 days of battery live. In one go.
- Turn off Auto Sync. Did you seriously think something that connects to the internet all the time did not drain your battery?
- Don't use Auto modes. Yes, this includes brightness. IT'S A SENSOR, GENIUS. Sensors require power. Just turn down the brightness yourself. (30% is more than sufficient in ordinarily lit rooms.)

Well have you every been stuck without a way of charging? There's times I know I wont be able to charge my phone and it might die so i do these things in order to improve and prolong my battery life.
Take a brick charger with you :laugh:
Unless you mean to do this when you're running low once in a blue moon, then ok.
Otherwise what's the point of the phone?
I do the literal opposite of your list.
Full brightness (unless I'm in a dark room)
4g
Syncing 4 gmail accounts
Syncing Microsoft exchange calendar
Power saving mode off
Facebook connected
I do have a fully charged original note 3 spare battery on me at all times though.
But I rarely need to use it before 7 pm (12 hours after taking it off the charger in the morning).

Yes, I do have. My solution is tha I will carry 3 oem batteries...plus a 10000 mah battery power bank.
I only got the spare battery yesterday.
I was still running on full mode before the spare battery. I made sure my phone was always charging (while at office, car or home).

Indeed... I do 7 hours a day by train, in which I have a 70% chance that I might have to spend half of that checking the travel advisor for an alternative route. I know what it is like all too well....
To me battery life is more valuable than knowing my neighbour managed to write a Q on her visit to the bathroom.
Is there any way to turn off data when the screen is turned off in the settings? Similar to the htc ones power saving option

I think juice defender does that.
The thing I like about the Note 3 is that battery life is not an issue anymore, provided that I can charge it overnight.
Today, I've been on battery for 17 hrs straight, including phone calls, 90 minutes of navigation, Internet use etc. And there's still 28% battery left.
My point is: if the battery life is much less, there's something wrong, and you should investigate that before turning to measures like in the first post. Use an app like Wake Lock Detector or Better Battery Stats to check what is draining your battery.

I don't actually have a Note 3. Still on Note II but I check in here for feedback.
I would suggest people to purchase the Android Tuner app. It ain't cheap unless u buy it in a sale, but it crams many utilities into one program meaning you don't have to run several different apps. These include battery information/tweaks, overclock/undervolt, ram management, screen off tweaks like disable data or wifi when there's no network activity such as streaming music, backup options like titanium pro, etc etc and much much more of varying complexity depending on how far you want to delve into it.
All in all, a wonderful app and worth every penny.

battery life is not dependent on what you flash. there is no such thing as a magic pill to flash to automatically give you good battery life. battery life is dependent on how you personally use your phone, how you personally set up your phone, what apps you chose to install, and very much depending on the quality of your phone/data connection.
...you bought and manually installed a new battery on your recently bought N5 before finding out what apps were causing the drain? Yikes. But yeah try better battery stats or wakelock detector to see what apps are draining it.
Mine's been off the charger for 29 hours so far and I still have 37% left. Depends how you use it. A good signal helps.

your battery life seems pretty average, not bad and not great. youll get about 3.5 hours screen on time total. sure, you can play with your settings/set up some to try to get it a little better. but, depending on your data/phone connection(quality of), you might not get much better(or you can get it much better).
You can also try going into your location settings and ticking the "Battery saving" mode.
I can confirm that data/phone connection quality has a huge impact.
At work my office is on the second of five floors with its windows faced to a very narrow court. So there is almost no connection and often the phone is switching between 2G, 3G and 4G all the time. If additionally the screen is on very often (due to messages, mails, etc.) the battery usually doesn't last longer than 5 to 6 hours.
A dutch guy . So am I.

K...just for one day do the following. ....start at 100 percent too.
Turn off location services. Turn off Google now. In the Google settings app, go into android device manager and uncheck both items. Turn off sync. Uninstall or freeze Facebook app and fitness app your screen shot listed. Freeze Google plus as well, if you're rooted. If not....sign out of it, or turn its sync off at least. Use browser for Facebook and google plus for the day.
Don't play ANY games.
Also, see how your signal strength is. If you are losing signal completely ....that will destroy your battery.
Do these things and see how your battery is. If its much better, then you can try turning things back on....one thing per day. And when your battery gets bad again....you know its the last thing you turned on.
See how it goes.

Poor battery life

Hi there,
I've had my Google Nexus 5 for a few weeks now and the battery life on it seems to be very hit and miss. Sometimes it'll make it through the day ok and others it won't. Today I haven't really used my phone very much and the battery is already down to 17%! I've followed the suggestions in the forum but any ideas as to what is causing this? I don't have my email set to push (I just check it when I need to), Facebook isn't set to automatically get notifications, Google Now is off (and the location settings are set to preserve battery) but I'm puzzled as to how the battery life is so bad. In terms of brightness, it's set down to around 20%.
My old Samsung S3 was never this bad!
use GSAM or better battery stats to find what is keeping your phone awake.
There were no other battery threads to post this in?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Apologies, I should have posted this in another battery post. Do I have to be rooted to use better battery stats?
Your cellular signal looks low. Your phone could be spending a lot of time hunting for a tower. Try using WiFi. You can also try putting your phone into either airplane mode or turn cellular data off.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You don't need root for gsam, tho with root you get more useful stats.
just a guess, but I agree, your Poor signal is likely destroying your battery.
I'd have to agree with others based on the minimal amount of information provided. Low signal + Google services (Auto Sync, etc.) trying to use that low signal is going to eat through any phones battery no matter how big.
Ok so I used Greenify to clear out any apps that I thought could have been causing the battery drain but to no avail. I've also installed GSAM battery monitor and that reports my battery usage as 5% per hour. The funny thing is I've come from a Samsung S3 which only had a 2100mah battery and my Nexus 5 gets nowhere near that in terms of battery life.

apps do not make a difference if your signal is garbage.
based on the 2 screen shots you provided, your signal is crap and eating your battery.

Thank you for your reply. I'm working at a place where the signal is much better (at least 3 bars) and still the battery drain is high.

If you click phone radio in gsam... It shows you time looking for signal.
Anyway, its your signal. It doesn't show up as big usage on any app. you're signal is very poor. That's your issue.
Not a lot you can do. Except turn off data. Or use WiFi. Or even airplane mode.
That's about it.
Nothing will save your battery with data on with such a low signal.
Thank you all for your feedback. I'll try using the Wi-Fi and switching off data and see if that helps.

You have normal and low awake time....so almost the only other possibility is radio signal. Or a rogue and sneaky app. Is location services on? That's usually what rogue apps interact with to cause bad drain. Just if that's the case, android o/s is usually real high. The last thing is screen brightness...if its real bright it will drain fast.
Try WiFi.....then look at those other options I said.
Good luck! ?

[Q] Bad battery life- help please?

Hi there,
I bought my one plus a month ago, and am getting around 3.5 screen time.
It is disappointing as I see screenshots of people with one plus who are getting 6 -10 hours screen time.
I am on battery saver mode, not using music, whatsApp, wase games or facebook, just a little bit email and browsing.
At night it is not going down a lot, but when I start using the phone, it goes down quite quickly.
(1 percent every 2 minutes, sometimes every minute). It seems to get worse every day.
If I start using GPS or video or music, my battery will be finished by noon.
I replaced the battery, and it is the same.
Attached three screenshots. (Including the night)
Help please?
Thank you!
I share you the same feeling when I see others having impressive battery performance specially screen-on time.
I have exactly the same drain behavior of yours, when my phone in deep sleep its sleep like a baby. but when I wake it its become beast awakening.
I run 3g when I am out and wi-fi at home, also running regular apps, whatsapp,snapchat,2emails,1gmail,instagram,web browsing, auto brightness, greenify. I checked with BBS and WLD but no culprit. I am on stock rom with root for the apps, no system tuning.
So you can see my setup is like most of regular users will do but noticeable difference in term of battery performance. I have no clue
Your battery life is fine, better mine
Who has a lot of SOT usually doesn't turn off/on the screen that much. The secret to achieve a lot of SOT is making long session on the screen (and having few apps, like you). So no worries I'm at 64% now with 1 hour of SOT, but I flash updates (CM 12) everyday and wake up the phone only when I need it, with 1-2 minutes sessions.

Hi,
Well, at least I am not the only one....
The problem is that it is getting worse every day and now I lose one percent in a minute!
Horrible! I have to charge it twice a day, and I barely use it.
I have no root, am not using any of the apps, only a little bit of browsing, and checking mails.
If I try to use waze for a half of an hour or a little bit of music (max 30min, I get only about 2 hours screen time!
It seems really poor from a brand new battery.
I have no clue what to do, or what is causing it. If anyone have suggestions, i will be glad to hear!
Are you using the stock OPO rom? because I always had a poor battery life, I had all kind of protections to keep battery life but when I saw, from 100 I had 70, it was awful, one solution I saw was to flash one custom kernel, somehow improved my battery life, but the final solution was to use a custom rom, I have experienced better battery life with 5+ roms rather than the ones with 4.x.x, maybe you should taste another android flavor and check if the battery life increases
How hard was it to change the battery? Was it soldered? Where did you get a replacement ?

I believe this is app related. Some apps keep phones awake. I encountered this problem with my S3 because I have lots of apps. But since I made sure I only install apps I absolutely need in my oneplus, I get a fantastic battery life.

High idle WiFi battery drain/power use. Share your GSam Battery Monitor Statistics

Are there people out there who mostly use their OnePlus 6 with WiFi yet your phone is mostly idle?
What's your average WiFi battery drain? Could you please upload your main GSam Battery Monitor Screen?
My phone is connected to a WiFi router (2.4GHz 802.11n) and the signal strength is excellent. On average my OnePlus has a 10 mAh discharge rate which is several times higher than for my old Nexus which is connected to the same WiFi network.
Here's my data:
20% of 50% of battery used for 31.5 hours.
3300/31.5*0.2*0.5 = 10.48 mAh.
No one uses OnePlus 6?

I use a PC up to 16 hours a day. Not everyone is obsessed with Instagramming or twitterring. I only use my smart phone when I'm en route and I occasionally use instant messengers.
Those who've replied < 6mAh, could you show your GSam screenshots, please?
What type of WiFi router do you use? What WiFi standard? Do you have MiMo enabled on it?
If you rock your phone with that minimal usage, I recommend using ElementalX kernel and LKT magisk modue with battery profile, I'm getting way more battery with this setup compare to stock one (about 4 more sot). But you'll get 30% more lagginess

I wonder how a custom kernel might help with the WiFi module battery drain. I barely receive any notifications and according to GSam my phone is in deep sleep mode most of the time. There's something else wrong but I've no idea what exactly.
Why does no one post GSam Battery Monitor screenshots?

Cause no one use their phone like you do, and it's pointless to measure your phone for fun.
BTW, as you describe, you may encountering oneplus most famous problem, "super deepsleep". You might wanna turn off battery optimization of your apps which send notification and turn off all advance battery optimization (deep optimization, sleep standby optimization).

Here:
Battery Saver: OFF
Adaptive Battery: OFF
Battery Optimization: Not Optimized Apps: None
Advanced Optimization: Deep Optimization/Sleep Standby Optimization: both OFF (I don't want to enable these two because I'm afraid I will start missing notifications from apps).
Am I missing something?
Edit: what's specially funny is that the guy who posted OnePlus 6 battery optimization guide has the same issue though he doesn't admit it. If you take a look at the screenshots he posted, you'll immediately notice that his WiFi usage is the second worst battery offender after the screen.
I still wonder why almost no one cares.
