I'm running the latest fresh froyo and would like to install the vanilla dialer. Is it possible? Which system apps would I need to remove and replace?
Figured I would rip the dialer from cm6 but don't know which HTC apks to remove.

Hello,
I used I've of ICS ROMs and it had gallery app I really liked (not the stock one), I can not find any more and I don't remember the name for app. Can somebody suggest possible variants which might have been baked into the ROM?
Thanks

did you even look? thread is two below this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1573221
I've been searching around for a transparent dialer for the stock Rogers ics rom. I don't want to flash a custom rom at the moment & the dialers on the play store such as exdialer etc don't allow you to clear the recent calls without deleting the logs. If anyone could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Hmmm
I have been using this: m4570d0n
But my device is rooted, and you should run a nandroid backup before you try this, might bork a factory rogers setup like yours.
Hopefully it is what you are looking for.
Good Luck,

Thanks. I'm rooted but stock ics, & everything there is only for cm9 roms... I'll keep looking.
Sent from, The Eclectic Chair.
What you are looking for is a modded version of the Contacts.apk that has a transparent theme for the phone app. The Contacts.apk is both the "people" app (what you would typically assume is the Contacts app) and the "phone" app (dialer, missed calls log, etc.). The Phone.apk is just just for the in-call stuff only. The only way to do that is to either theme it yourself or find one that has been themed already. However, it also has to be a Contacts.apk that's based on the touchwhiz(stock) framework. Anything AOSP-based (CM9, AOKP, etc) will not work.
I have no idea if this will still work as I believe it was based on a now outdated version of Sky ICS but you can try.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599228
Save it to your sdcard. Then open up a root file browser like Root Explorer or Solid Explorer and move the file to /system/app. Then change permissions on the file to rw-r--r-- and change the owner/group to root. Then reboot and you're good to go.
As always, make a backup of the original Contacts.apk.
edit: made a typo and accidentally deleted the permissions to change. That's what I get for typing this from my phone.

Yeah I can, the thing that I don't understand is why I'd be changing the contact apk, when it's the dialer that I would like to change?
And if I post my contact apk won't all my contacts be made public?
Sent from, The Eclectic Chair.
The contact.apk controls the Dailer.
..and no they won't your contacts are not stored in the .apk

Ok, I'll do that.... I copied the contract apk to the external sd, but how can I add it to the post via Tapatalk?
The other thing that I noticed, was my contact is less than 2meg, while the contact apk that silverwrx posted earlier in this thread, is about 3.5meg? Just wondering why there's such a big difference in size?
Edit: would you mind posting a screen shot of your dialer?

What would happen if I tried to use a deoxed apk? Would it work (I'm doubtful) or would it freeze / mess up the phone?
I've got a couple of recent nandroid backups...

It should work if you rename the .odex file to something like .odex.bak

So you're saying that I rename my current contact apk to contact.apk.bak or does it HAVE to be contact.apk.odex.bak? & then I just move the deodexed contact.apk into system apps, fix permissions, reboot?
Sent from, The Eclectic Chair.
You should have a contacts.apk and a contacts.odex rename them both add .bck to them if your going to put a deodex contacts.apk

Yup I've got both. So just renaming both the existing contact apks & then moving the deodexed contact.apk as is into system apps, I don't have to do anything else with it (I'm asking because I hadn't paid attention to other apks that I moved, that there was also an odex file).
Sent from, The Eclectic Chair.
Don't have to do anything else....and renaming is so you can go back to the stock one if you have too

I just got this phone yesterday to discover that the stock rom (rooted) doesn't have the red line show up under a misspelled word. I had this on my evo 4g running cm9 or 10.
Does anyone know of a rom, or roms, that would have this feature.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Or would anyone know of a way to add this feature to the stock ics rom?
Thanks,

never really paid attention to this.
id think this might be a keyboard feature more than a rom feature, no?

I installed LantinIME.apk from a rom I extracted for the evo. The keyboard worked but still no spell checker. Did you happen to notice if any of the roms you've flashed had this feature, preferably an ICS rom?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
I also think this is a keyboard feature. Try installing one of the different keyboards from the play store.
I'm using swift 3, no red lines on touchwiz, however my galaxy player 5.0 running cm9 w/swift 3 has it (did not on touchwiz). I assume this is a rom feature.

I have been trying to ilfigure this out for a while. I haven't been able to get it to work with any of the roms. Someone said CM10 might do it but haven't tried.
Edit:
This is a better start: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1832126 the changes could be diffed from the stock rom
OR
Some info behind it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641988&page=2

Would you happen to know if that would work with the stock rom (rooted) for Verizon?
I just got the phone and even though I've been doing a ton of reading, I'm still a noob when it comes to the s3. And the last thing I want to do is mess anything up. Atlest with the evo 4g I didn't have to worry about different carriers and what not.
Thanks,

The changes made should work. So basically if you compared the changes of this to their stock rom here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1825272 and then applied the same changes to our stock rom, it would work. BUT their files as is will not work.
Basically, it would probably take about 15 minutes for someone to do if they knew what they were doing. I however don't have 15 minutes to spend on this so I can't help right now lol.

That's ok, as long as I know that it'll work. When I get to my PC I'll look it over and hopefully not break anything. Lol

so what I would do is download their stock deodex and extract the files that are included in the mod.
Then, decompile the .jars and apks that were modded and the stock version
Run winmerge on them to see exactly what they changed
Then make those exact changes to our stock deodex rom. So you will need to decompile 3 sets of files and recompile 1 set.

I got apktool installed and decompiled framework.jar where it creates a folder called smali. The problem is, I can't view any of the contents from within it. If I go to properties it states contents "nothing" yet shows free space as being 66.7 GB. So I know that there's something in there, I'm just not allowed to view the contents. I read somewhere that you need a text editor?
I did all this on a Linux machine (Mint 13.) I'm gonna try it on a windows PC next just to see what happens.
Edit: I found out that by changing .jar to .apk and then decompiling it allowed me to view the contents. Now I'm sitting at trying to open the TextView.smali. lol
Edit 2: for some reason it's not working for the JellyWiz rom. It's still not showing the contents from within the samli folder.

I have. I've also deactivated call forwarding before relaunching the app, also with poor result.
Well the other thing I can think of install stock rooted rom get vvm working and do a backup with titanium go back to the rom your on right now restore app/data
With titanium. This has work for me on International roms

Someone released VVM for ICS on Motorola RAZR in a .ZIP file that needs to be flashed with Safestrap... When I tried the APK by itself on my RAZR, that wasn't enough - there are other things that the VVM APK needs to function. I still have the .ZIP file somewhere but if you don't have ICS it probably won't work.
