[Q] rooting, unlocking bootloader, unlocking carrier (what order?) - General Questions and Answers

I'm getting my new Galaxy S5 from T-Mobile today. My goal is to unlock the carrier, unlock the bootloader, and root the phone. I'm wondering, should these be done in a specific order (i.e. is unlocking the carrier or bootloader necessary before rooting)? Does rooting automatically unlock the bootloader, or is it a separate step?

[Q] What is bootloader and do I need to unlock it?

I am completely clueless of what bootloader is and after some googling, I think that it's the locking of a phone's network to a specific company like verizon, at&t etc. But, here in India, we don't have such contracts, so do I need to unlock bootloader before rooting my phone? I previously had galaxy ace and there was no mention of bootloader even when I installed all sorts of custom roms.

you just won't get root if your bootloader is locked
Unlock it for root, CWM, ROMs , etc
No, a bootloader doesn't do what you assumed, it just restricts your devices from any alteration by giving you limited access. Region locked or carrier lock is a different thing.
Thanks all, one more thing, if I unlock bootloader then can I get my warranty back?

NO, you won't. When you apply for the code on Motorola site you lose your warranty. Even if you somehow manage to trick them, Moto G will still show status code as 2 (meaning relocked) instead of 1 (locked) or 3 (unlocked). Anybody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Carrier unlocking question

Hi guys,
I need some clarification re: carrier unlocking and how it works.
I recently purchased a carrier unlocked G920T, and I was going to start messing with custom roms/kernels and other goodies. My question is: Will the phone revert back to being carrier locked if I do a factory reset or if I unlock the bootloader and flash custom roms?
I'm not a T-Mobile user, so I can't get another unlock code from them.
Thanks!!

Once device is unlocked, it'll stay unlocked.

can a carrier model be unlock and rooted ?

hi
i have a 7pro t mobile version. i was following a guide to unlock the bootloader and root the phone. until i downloaded oxygen updater and it says the phone cant get updates, had to stop. so. can the phone be unlock?
then I can continue with the guide on how to root it,
or my options are limited here ?
thanks
The SIM unlock aspect needs to be done with the T-Mobile unlock tool built into the stock firmware. Bootloader unlocking can be attained by Flashing international firmware via MSM-- then unlocking as if it were international. However, that will result in the SIM still being restricted to T-Mobile if it has not been SIM-unlocked
Edit: Bootloader can also be unlocked with the T-Mobile software installed, a request can be submitted through 1+ to have a file emailed to you, containing an unlock file to be used while on carrier firmware, called an Unlock Token. However, this process will take a week for 1+ to review, and approve if applicable.
