[Q] Red 'x' on Battery when Unplugged - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had a look and can't find anything specifically matching my issue...
I've recently acquired a Tab 2 7.0 off eBay, and I've updated it from 4.1.1 to 4.2.2, the official upgrade. The Tab is stock and unrooted. I've been using the original travel charger to charge it (5v, 2A). There is no issue with charging, and the Tab discharges normally, it lasts about two days per charge.
My problem is that while the device is unplugged, there is a red 'x' on the battery. So the device for some reason thinks it's charging, but not getting enough power. In actual fact, because it is unplugged, it is getting NO POWER. With GSAM Battery Monitor installed, GSAM advises "Charging: Time to Full: Calculating - check back later".
There is no other issue with the Tab. Any idea what this might be, and if I can repair it myself?
Thanks for your help...

I did not have this kind of issue with my Tab since one year.
I think you should factory reset your tab which will solve your problem.

I have an original Galaxy Tab as well, so I will swap around the leads. As I say, there's no issue with charging, it's just the battery symbol when the Tab 2 is discharging. And it doesn't give me an estimate of time left before the battery drains.
I've already factory reset the Tab, but may try that again if there is no other way in a day or two...
Thanks for your suggestions.

OK I said that because my friend have same problem and I use the charger and cable from other tab and the X gone.

Even stranger...
When I plug the cable into the Tab, even though it is unattached to a power source, the red x disappears.
Then when I unplug it, the x returns.
To be clear, the cable is detached from the plug and carrying no power, at this point.
I tried a factory reset, no joy. I did try wiping the cache while in recovery but got an error.

Thanks, that would be a shame. As I bought it cheaply off of eBay, it's probably not under warranty any more, so I would have to pay Samsung for the fix - which kind of negates the benefit of the cheap deal from eBay...

Ohh.
I was also suffered from display issue out of the box fault.
My tab display is blinking very fast at 50% or less britness.
I requested to replace and give new but they did not give new and replace only display even though problem was not solved.
Finally i forgot that i have that kind of problem... Haha

My 7.7 tab is locked-up and hanged after charging, any advice?

Hello,
My tablet seems to be dead.
One day I just put it into the charger after its battery was completely empty. The next morning, the tablet was not responding at all, the charging animation logo was not moving, and when I tried to turn it on, it showed the Samsung Galaxy Tab logo and that's it, and if I turned it off, it opens again by itself and stops at Samsung logo. After some tries, I did not know what to do.
No, it had the original firmware.
It does not open the recovery menu, however, it does open the menu for updating the software - I tried to install the original firmware, but that solution does not work as well.
I'd appreciate any advice.
Thanks.
I have similar experience but I am not sure if the cause was the same. First thing first, you said you put your 7.7 into a charger, if I recalled correctly stock 7.7 doesn't come with a charging cradle. Did you actually mean the wall-charger that comes with the package?
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda premium
Yes, I meant the wall-charger.
What did you do with your device?..
Can you get into download mode or recovery? If You can get into recovery do a factory reset. If you are on ICS flash honeycomb first before reset just to be safe.

I over-drained the battery like you did. Modern Li-ion batteries have over-charging and under-charging protection. Without them your battery would be damaged (or even exploded on over-charging protection failure)
In my case the undercharging prrotection kicked in thus I need to find a high and constant current to charge it back up. Any source that makes 7.7 display the charging animation could help. I went to a shop and tried many battery packs, eventually I see the charging animation again when I plugged it into a 6000mhA battery pack with 2.1A output.
I could have taken it to service centre but I don't want to wait 2-week, and I kinda need to get a battery pack for my tab so...

Amm.. am gonna try this.. if it did not work, then I have no option but to to visit the service center.

I took it to a shop and tried to charge it as you said, I do not remember the exact power charge, but I think it was 2.1A.
Did I mention that I already sent it to the service center and they couldn't repair it! neither a local repair shop! =//

I am surprise that your local service center couldn't help, given that undercharging is such a common problem of this power-hunger tablet (happened to me twice).

Hi,
I'm experiencing exactly the same problem.
To resolver the issue; can you pl confirm if I need to get a battery pack or one can just charge with the charger supplied with the device?
Ive posted this before but i think these devices when get too low in battery power wont charge even with the wall charger.the charging circuits need a certain amount of power to trigger it to start charging.
anyway good to see you got it sorted..

Battery simply won't charge, have a few hypotheses

So lately I've been running into a rather annoying and inconvenient problem with my beloved S3. The thing doesn't charge well, at all. Plugged into the wall, via USB, via fast charge USB...I just can't get it to charge. I went to bed last night with the phone at around 30%, plugged it into the wall, and when I woke up 7 hours later it was at 55%....not ideal. Same result when I left it plugged into my computer overnight. At first I thought it was the wall charger, but that was ruled out when I found that I couldn't charge over usb either. My current suspect is a faulty usb cable, and unfortunately I don't have another one to test. What are the odds its damaged contacts on the inside of the phone? is there a way to test/look for that? FYI I'm running beans jellybean build 2, but this problem started when I was still on ICS. Any ideas as to what could be causing it? I've noticed high android system usage (over 50%), but I doubt that accounts for the drain I'm seeing. Any help figuring this our would be appreciated.

I had this exact same issue, eventually it stopped charging at all.
Turned out to be a fault of the phone. Called Verizon, they sent me another battery to try, didn't fix anything, they then did a warranty exchange. Got a refurb phone and it works great.

Thanks for the intel. Im actually on a refurb right now due to some issues with my launch device. Was your replacement covered under warranty at no cost? Unfortunately for me I'm abroad so I can't exactly go in to a Verizon store or call them to ship a replacement.

Do wipe the battery stats and see - wouldn't probably solve the issue but worth trying !
I too have USB problems. A normal car charger will work but when I use my USB wall/laptop/car it won't charge much. When i sleep it stops charging and I wake up to 70% battery or so. I don't know if its my cable (which it probably is) or if its my phone. Where do I go about replacing my USB?

For me I think it is my AC adapter. My phone charges faster plugged into my macbook than my wall charger.

I'll try to find a new cable and see if it works. Other than that I'm at a loss. I think I've had this problem before and fixed it with a complete drain, followed by a full charge from the wall (with phone off). I can't remember if it was this exact same situation though, and also have no idea why said solution would work.

Amazon: OEM Cable
Although I don't think you'll have any issues with any generic cables, I've used many different cables from other phones, monoprice, amazon, etc and haven't had any issues with charging any phone I have.
Alright I just had my phone plugged in for over 7 hours to get it to 100%. I'll give a progress report when I try to charge it again. Fyi it just dropped 2% in less than a minute.
UPDATE: battery still horrible. Went back to tw nandroid to rule out the possibility of a JB leak bug

Doubtful that anyone will see this, but there's a new development. My phone's LED indicator turned green to signal a full charge while the phone was still at 91%.... whatever that means

Mine was doing that same **** before it broke when it stopped suddenly just after impact with concrete.
I was about to reflash the synergy rom I was on hoping that would fix it.
Did a reinstall fix the charging issue no now you've just got a wrong indicator or is the charging issue still there.
I totally attribute this to a degrading OS... Now I'm not so sure...
Tap'd
Still persists after multiple ROM flashes. I'm gonna get a new cable and see if that works.
Update: yup it was the cable. At least it's not the phone

Well, its back at it.
At 16% earlier today the phone was plugged in, charged fine, fell on its face. Unplugged, battery pull, charging again then slows. 6 hours later it was up to 75% where its slowly been losing charge while plugged in.
Any idears?

On Amazon you can buy a battery with a standalone charger you could charge and swap batteries till you can get a new phone if it is now warranty replaced

Phone says it's charging but won't.. the animation icon that indicates....

When trying to plug my verizon s3 galaxy into usb cable to charge, the charging indicator comes on... but I don't think it's actually charging because there is usually an animation indicator in the top bar that shows it's charging. It's been 3 hours and I'm at 0%. I can power my phone on long enough to see it's still on but it will power off because it's still not really charging (or charging at all?). Unplugged, phone won't power on of course. Plugged in, I just have power on for about a few minutes. I've had this when it was released, so since 2012 I have not have to replace any batteries or cable.
I've tried using a seperate usb cable charger, and same thing. What could be the issue? I want the usb port repair to be the last resort so please help! So here's my plan so far:
-contact cleaner/gas duster (is there a difference between the two?)
-replace batteries.
Any troubleshooting/diagnosis I could do myself to find out the problem? Anything else I should do?
I'm not the most tech-savvy person so please be nice and thorough. Lol.
-----update------
I don't want to do factory reset because I don't want to lose my personal data. My phone now says 8% but drains right away the moment I use it. My laptop won't read it to allow me to transfer pics, vids, other data. I installed a battery current widget witch reads:
3.22V (which is good since the battery is 3.8V)
103.3F internal temperature
and 0mA ----> So this is the root of my problem. Why is it reading 0mA? But very slowly charging to around 8% when powered off?
Try Factory reset. If that doesn't work, it could be the charging port has come lose from the solder/logic board.

Could be one of two things, either the battery itself or its the charging port. I've seen it on my gfs S3 which is up to the latest NE1 ota and she has had it replaced by verizon 3 times already and it's weird because it works fine on a charger in the house but in the car or a portable charger won't work

No, VZW never really figured out what it was. They just assume it's the phone. But it's been the same issue with each one. It's the OTA update that's causing issues I have a feeling, if only big red knew what the heck they were doing it probably wouldn't even do that at all. You could clean the cache partition. Not sure if it would work, trial and error there I guess

Nexus 5 sometimes refuses to charge

So my Nexus 5 sometimes won't charge. For example, I plug it in at 5%, and after an hour, it is still at 5% or lower ,often even at 0%, so when I unplug it, it instantly turns off. Sometimes it charges fine to something like 20%, then it stops and battery slowly starts to discharge. There are days when it's perfect, absolutely no trouble. I should also mention that when it charges normally, the charger plug is warm-hot, when it doesn't charge, it's cold.

It's hardware. Either the cable, the charger, or the phones mini USB port.
Try a different charger and cable for starters.

Its the hardware, maybe the battery or something and its also happening to LG G2 (N5 brother), so LG's faults.
But Google posted oficcially some ways to fix it, you only need to power off the phone and plug it. Wait 30 minutes and then turn it on again, leave it charging and this time probably works.
It doesn't happen to often, but when it does, its really annoying.
I remember having this issue but only with wireless charging. Seems like an issue with the wire.
I had this issue with my Galaxy Note. It was actually a faulty chip on the motherboard that was causing my charging problems... None the less, I would first check your cable and then the micro USB port.
I have 3 chargers and 2 USB cables, tried all the possible combinations, nothing. What should I look for about the USB port?

My 5 year old daughters Galaxy tab 3 is the same. I can tell the plastic part of the mini USB port is snapped. So only the wires are holding it together. It will charge... But only when it's laying on a stable surface, untouched and sometimes I have to wiggle it til it's charging, then leave it alone til it's done.
Does it say it's charging? For me, even if it isn't charging but is plugged in, it says "Charging (AC)".
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah, our tab makes the plug in noise over and over til it's good.
But just cause it says it's charging doesn't mean every pin is making proper contact with the charger or device.
I cleaned the phone's USB port with a toothpick and compressed air and so far, it's working all right again.

my N5 does this but with wireless charging..
sometimes i put it on when i go to bed, and i know it starts charging
in the AM i see its lower ... checking the batt stats it shows that it charged for a few mins then stopped
dunno yet whats up, it happens sporadically.
Any chance software could cause this? Rolling back to 4.4/4.4.x or resetting factory settings would help?

that could be next step.
if a factory reset doesnt help, then u have a hardware problem. Does the batt info says "healthy" or "good" for the battery?
have u tried using a toothpick to ensure all usb pins are clean of dust?
maybe u can get another battery and change it... if a cell is going bad inside the batt it can do that too

Today it didn't charge, so I decided to restart. When I had just powered off, a fully charged battery icon came on the screen and stayed for about 15 seconds. Then the screen flashes black and started showing the charging battery icon.

download CPU-Z as the simplest way to tell
go to the Battery tab and it will tell ya the "Health" of the battery. Mine says "Good"
Another trick is to buy a wireless charger. If this ever happens to me I'm doing that.
This has happened to me months ago and I tried everything. Turned off my phone to charge, tried different cables...nothing worked.
Then I started charging my phone with a blackberry charger and it has been successfully charging my phone ever since. And it charges faster than the original charger. When you plug the charger into the phone, it's very solid, whereas the original charger is somewhat flimsy. Not sure if that may be the case. But that's what I did!
Hope this helped!

Discharging whilst on charge

Does anybody have any ideas what I can do to resolve my issue:
Most times whilst my phone is on charge it will lose its charge gradually. This is of more annoyance when it's below 15% and the notification pops up every second until I refit the cable again and again.
I know I can turn this notification off but it let's me know if my phone will actually charge once I've fit it right.
I have tried using many different chargers and non have helped, I have also replaced the cable flex as I thought it was an issue with the micro usb port but that hasn't helped either.
My options now are to replace the actual battery or get a new phone. I've had this since day one so I'm hoping a switch if the battery would help just wanted your ideas...
Thanks!

bro if your battery icon is showing that it is charging and and yet it discharges then a reboot should fix the issue when it happens. if your phone is easily disconnected from the cable then the microusb on your phone seems to have loosened. if you have warranty get it fixed.
You have a qi charger?, if factory reset won't work then it must be your USB slot or battery, if it doesn't drain that fast disconnected then its your USB plug
Install betterbatterystats and see if you get anything related to otg or slimport wakelocks,
I had this problem on my first Nexus 5, no matter what cable/charger i use, it used to discharge whilst charging and also used to disconnect/reconnect from usb even if slightly touched. Solution was to RMA the device and the replaced device didn't had that problem, i think problem lies with the micro usb jack on the phone. If it's software issue for you, you can try rebooting in safe mode to see if some app is causing this or factory reset.

bro if your battery icon is showing that it is charging and and yet it discharges then a reboot should fix the issue when it happens. if your phone is easily disconnected from the cable then the microusb on your phone seems to have loosened. if you have warranty get it fixed.

Thanks for the response guys, I've replaced the USB port already and that hasn't fixed it. I'll try installing BBS and see if I find those wakelocks but I doubt that's the cause....
Does this sound like a fault in the battery? I'll give safe mode a shot, good idea!
I would RMA it but I bought it from Google day one and I think they only offered a years warranty

You could get a wireless charger and see if that works.

Was waiting for somebody to suggest that Obvious comment, where's MrGenerous to donate me one? :sly:

Have you checked what kind of power is being drawn while charging? With trying different cables and charger?
To see if its just not getting the current. It's likely not, but good to check.
If the USB port was replaced, I'd guess something wasn't done right, or something else was damaged...

What's the best way to check the current draw?
This issue was there with the original USB port which prompted me to replace it but to no avail....
I've just had my phone on charge for the past hour and it's gone from 10% TO 4%, just pulled the charger out and put it back in and now it's charged up to 11% :what:

Your port may be flaky it sure could be.
There's apps to check current, but Gsam will do it to. You can hit refresh in gsam a few times to see it fluctuate.
There's likely more sophisticated apps, but I haven't used any.

You can use Current Widget to monitor current draw and log the results if needed.

I've logged the current draw when it refused to charge, can anybody help decipher what is going on, I'm assuming there is not enough data here to do that other than to prove that I'm not going crazy...
Code:
2015/02/06 17:27:13,560mA,40%,3.847V,23.2°C

2015/02/06 17:44:10,1100mA,42%,3.853V,22.4°C

2015/02/06 17:49:09,934mA,39%,3.463V,24.0°C
So for 22 minutes on charge from 40% it charged up to 42% then discharged down to 39% :crying:
Can anybody suggest where I can buy a reliable genuine replacement battery which isn't crazy expensive? (Or should I be buying a new phone??)
Holy moly you have a fast discharge rate if that is accurate. 2 amps?! Try charging from safe mode (hold power button, instead of tapping the power off option hold it down and it will give the option for safe mode). See if that helps.
