I've been doing a bit of googling but unable to find a accurate answer.
Is a case for the nexus 5 really necessary? Does the back panel wear off and show underneath the rubberised finish?
How scratch resistant is the body of the phone?
I like the body of the nexus 5 but I also want to keep it in good condition.
What is your thoughts on this?

IMO, buy a case and protect your investment. There are many styles to choose from.

I don't like using cases either but my common sense is bigger than personal preferences and bought not 1 but 2.
That was a wise investment since it saved my phone in 2 different accidents, both on a hard floor.
If You don't want very much to transform the phone, buy a very slim case. They are not as protective as a bumper but did the job with my phone.

I have an i-Blason Armorbox for when I go out, but at home I use the phone without a case.
Bought the Spigen Ultra Fit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9umZGXf_N4 on Amazon.de and its very good imo and doesn`t add much bulk to the phone.
Any cases that still work with the qi nexus wireless charger? It be nice to protect my phone, but I don't want to take the case off every time I charge, as I keep it on the wireless charger most the time when not in use.
Thanks.

I bought two. Ringke Fusion which i use daily and an other hard back flip cover which i use while travling! Buy a case depending on your need.
Speculate all you want.. But the bottom line is, if you're clumsy then you should get a case. If you aren't then go naked with a Glass Screen protector may be.
However, accidents do happen and your phone will survive it if you have a case on it!
Dress mine with a wallet case during the day, but then its naked at night!
I just picked up the Ballistic SG for mine. It's such a good investment for an amazing phone.

To go case-less you need to be both careful and lucky.
Personally I use a thin Quicksand case just for added grip and scratch protection. If it drops on concrete it's probably still going to break.

This is what I use for a slim feel and it's just as protective and it's a steal for that price. Case and screen protector for $8 from that company is awesome! it's $17 cheap then it is on their website.

I did also, and highly recommend this case. It attracts less smudges than the Slim Armor which would be my next recommendation if you don't mind loosing some of the sleekness of the N5. But for maximum protection, the Slim Armor or Neo Hybrids are the best bet.
Isn't it really personal preference.?(not everyone is the same) Your daily life has to be taken into account, your job(I work with tools all day so need a case). My brother has a ton of cases for work out of work at home when the kids are around.etc etc.I'm not rich so I have to protect my baby.lol

I was wondering which case is better than the other?
I'm looking to keep the nexus 4 slim, sexy, and functional.
I narrowed it down to these two cases because of the clicky tactile feels (on the fusion revision) and the original bumper while maintaining slimness.
I got the bumper a week after I received my phone. Well, not the official one, but a replica of the LG one that's sold in the Play Store. The one I received off Amazon seemed fine, but after about a week of normal use, 2 cracks appeared - one on the bottom where the USB is, and the other on the power button.
I think that they appeared because of plugging in the phone and clicking the power button turning it on and off. The material (metal-looking plastic) that surrounds the bumper is flimsy on it's own, and with a certain amount of pressure and heat from the phone, it's prone to cracking.
If you Google around you'll find that a lot of people have had the same problem with the official one. I bought the same bumper for my friend too, but his is holding up well so far, so I'm not sure. The bumper seemed to have a tighter fit on his N4 whereas mine felt a little loose. He has been using it for a couple months as his was the first wave of N4 that were shipped out. I just got mine a little less than a month ago.
Switched over to the Ringke Fusion based on the number of excellent reviews it got both on XDA and Amazon. Took about a week to get here and because it is the revision, the buttons are clicky and give a good feedback. The case also doesn't add much bulk at all. While I do like the heft of carrying around the phone naked, the glass panels scare me. I never used cases on my old phones, but then again, they were plastic and metal. They sure could take a hit!
The Fusion makes the N4 feel more solid as it is, and it works well with wireless chargers. The only complaint I have about it is the back clear plastic tends to dirty quite easily, with scuffs, fingerprints. But then again, who takes time out of their day to gander at the back of the phone. Sure it's pretty but you'll be spending more of your time messing around with the front.
Where'd you find the official bumper for 13?

I remember when i bought my N4, I kept buying different bumpers because either they were too tight [messed up my screen protector], too bulky or did not protect my phone good enough. In January, I bought Ringke Fusion; been using it since then . Its not one of those cheap bumpers, you will definitely feel the quality. Its fits the phone very well and you wont feel the size of it in your hand or in your pocket.

It's a replica. The real ones are sold on the play store. If it says official elsewhere and is less than the price you would normally pay, chances are it's not official. Anyone can say it's official but it isn't.

LOL I would personally get the Fusion, and yes, most bumpers online are replicas even if they are in LG packaging. The normal bumpers cost about 20bux (USD) so that's a good gauge in authentic or not.
There's a thread somewhere comparing the packaging but basically, if there's a holo sticker on the back, mine is square that reads "Original accessories by LG".
GL
Bumper
Wider
Looks better
Less protection
Ringke
Better protection
Lets you create custom designs to insert behind the plastic
horrible protruding creases on the back of the case. - rough to the touch
picks up fingerprints and dust way too easily.
I use bumper for everyday use and if i'm going to be somewhere outside for a long while where i won't have a place to put my phone safely away i use the ringke.

You're gonna find dozens of different opinions on this. Everyone has different needs and preferences and few people will have used more than one case.
I've had the Diztronic TPU case. It's not bad. But being a TPU case, it's fairly bulky and I wouldn't call it pretty. I got this one a bit later: http://www.fasttech.com/products/0/10001933/1138601-protective-pc-matte-case-for-lg-nexus-4 Looks and feels better in my opinion and is less bulky. Definitely offers less protection though, but I'm okay with that cause I just like using my phone quite a bit more with this case compared to a TPU one. Doesn't mean you will, though. There is no single best case.
I personally like the S line TPU cases found on ebay, there are only a few bucks and they provide the best overall protection + grip on the sides. Cant complain about 2 bucks.
I'm using this one and love it.

I have used a black S line TPU case from ebay since I first got my Nexus 4 a few months ago. I have dropped it on a couple of hard surfaces over time and it's faired out pretty well and I would recommend them to anyone, also great value for money.
I just got my triple armor hybrid case today and I like it a lot.it feels very comfortable in the hand. The edges aren't deep like the eagle case. Its perfect. Absolutely love the Ringke Fusion case. It's got a plastic transparent back so you can show off the unique glass back of the Nexus 4 (which is one of the only truly unique and beautiful things about this phone.) also offers a solid amount of protection. Have dropped it a couple times.

I use "Rearth Ringke SLIM White" cover, it's made in solid plastic and it costs 13€ (17.65 $).
For me this cover is one of the best available for nexus 4, there's only one defect it doesn't offer a perfect grip.
Poetic's SLIM case is also pretty awesome, and it leaves the whole screen exposed so you can swipe from the edges (e.g., in Play app). $6 at Amazon...

I have always preferred tpu or hybrid cases, the hybrids for the nexus 4 were lack luster at best, and out of the tpu cases I found the cruzerlite a2 to be the best. Yeah, it is a touch expensive. I bought the revised official bumper case for my Nexus 5, and it's still in fantastic condition. It was $35 on Google's old store, as well. I got the version with the fatter, actually usable buttons.
I do also have quite a love for Tech21 cases, but I got the one for the Nexus 5 used, so the clear plastic is unfortunately scratched up.

I'd like to get this case for my black 6P but $35 is s joke, a case shouldn't cost 7% of the price of the device. The case reminds me of the cool Nexus graphics they had on the Galaxy Nexus and the I/O Galaxy Tab 10.

Well UAG cases are usually $40 plus if you don't like it Google is really good about returns so that's why I bit the bullet and bought 2 of their cases. I just ordered myself an adopted clear one too because the other one I bought is for my wife. I think I'm good now on cases after getting 8 of them.
I didn't have any issues with it turning yellow. It was actually a hard plastic case, hence the scratches. Apparently toothpaste can buff out scratches, but everyone forgets to mention that you shouldn't use the gel kind, or any toothpaste with flavoring. Who even has plain paste-style toothpaste?

Just found these cases on Amazon. I've always been a big fan of these. I've never had the heavy duty holster case before but I've had several of the Unicorn Beetle cases and have loved them. I have had great luck with Supcases on other phones and tablets. Love the fitment and the rubber last forever.
Looks like the pictures for both cases on Amazon have been updated. They look really nice and don't interfere with the auto focus sensor. Unicorn Beetle Slim and Pro
Edit: I believe they also added new colors

So the Unicorn case has a screen protector built in to the case? Also... Are the power button and volume rocker covered or naked

Yes, although the built in screen protector is pretty nasty. Easy to remove by pushing it out of the frame and scraping off the adhesive. I have one on my g3 and the buttons are open, but that's probably because the way the g3 sits. Looking at the version for the Nexus it looks like they are completely covered.

Good point. If I really wanted to I could peel off the included one and go with a tempered glass protector.

This is what I did for the iPhone version. I couldn't stand the built-in protector for more than a day before I ordered glass.
I preordered this case about a month ago and absolutely need this case. After using one on my Motorola nexus 6, and doing construction work for a living its my go to case. I don't know how much longer I can wait for this to ship.... Seems like the date keeps getting pushed back on Amazon.

Only the pro has the built-in plastic protector. Buttons are covered, but still just as effective/responsive. IMO from personal experience, the pro version is complete overkill because the standard cause does such a great job with almost no perceived bulk. Pro only wins out over the standard version if you expect to drop your phone from an extreme height like 15 feet or so. If you, like many, like UAG cases, you'll love this one.
Just picked up the phone and I am looking for a good case. I always keep phone on the hip, wondering if there is a good holster case for the phone that isn't too bulky. I've never been a huge fan of Otterbox cases but if that's all that is both durable and a holster I guess I will consider it.

Supcase makes a decent one that is thinner than the otterbox. The only downsides of that I've seen is that no matter which way you put the phone in the holster, the volume buttons can be pressed. The advantage I see with the otterbox if that the phone can be locked in screen out and the holster used as a kickstand. I personally prefer the otterbox but you will pay more. And the otterbox when I looked was only available from Motorola and otterbox.
Try seidio. They have one that I use and have used for years for different phones. The one for the Moto x pure edition makes the phone less slippery to me. I usually buy an extra holster because I am hard on them and the spring clip breaks eventually.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think Seidio made for the 2015, but will look again. I've always had pretty good luck with their products. Will compare that and the Otterbox if I can find it.

Seido does make one. They sell the case and holster both individually and as a combo
Supcase holster and case can be modified actually . I just took a hack saw to the other tab that would cover the volume and power keys . The only downside is you are left releasing the phone from one side only and in one orientation . If this isnt a problem for you . Then this will be a fix for you . Also removal of the built in screen shield is a pain in the ass . Otherwise I love mine since I modified it
Good to hear that there are cases available. Do any of them work with a GPS type mount for a car? Not sure if one even exists that fits the phone either way.

Not sure about GPS mounts. I've seen a few that claim to work with phones with 6 inch screens (i.e. Nexus 6) and they might be big enough.
For the car, check out the arkon MG279.
Holsters
I use a NiteIze holster http://www.niteize.com/product/Clip-Case-Cargo-Mobile-Device-Holsters.asp - the extra tall one. I've used their other holsters for previous phones and they work quite well at protecting the phone.

^^The "double wide" works well with this phone too.
If you want to carry your phone without a case but in a holster, this Note 5 spring clip holster works great with the Moto X Pure:

Thanks. That's a good find, might pick it up.

My Seidio Note 4 holster I was using for my MXP just broke. I'm giving this one a try. Holsters always break around the clip. I'm hoping this one is strong as advertised.

The Note 5 holster really is a perfect fit and better than a Note 4 holster.
