The button to the left of the physical button on the phone. (I'm not 100% it is called the menu button, but that is what I am going to refer it as.)
I just upgraded from the GS3 and am a bit frustrated. The button now goes to the task manager. I have to press and hold to get the menu appear. I hate this! Does anyone know of a way to get it back to normal? :crying:
It is now the recent apps button.

That's how Android buttons are supposed to be.... Recent apps, home, back, in that order.

I know it has only been a day, but have you heard of a way to change the function?

I swear it wasn't like this on the Galaxy S3
It wasn't like this on the gs4 either ....give it a few days for some of the apps to be updated for the s5.

You can press and hold on the task button and it will trigger the menu.

It wasn't like that on the s2, s3, or s4
To be honest, I prefer the new layout on the s5. It was a pain having to hold the home button to get to recent app before

I was super happy when I saw the option to long-press recent apps for the menu key. Hopefully later on we get to remap the key to menu in ROMs like CM but if not I'm fine with it. I do wish it were still the menu key by default, though.

Well known "bug", you should really search your devices forums. Basically it's from Voice app that Samsung has bound to double tapping the home button. Look in your device's dev forums probably best bet.
Thx. Doing that now. But one thing though this never happened to me before. This annoying bug Started today

What file contains the softkey mappings, and can it be changed without root?
System_usr_keylayout_generic.kl
And
No.

Thanks.
And,
crap.
So...just checking; I'm looking to swap the "recent apps" and "back" buttons, which are off-display keys, of course. Don't suppose that's in some other file that I can change without root...somehow?
And if I really can't change them, how are after-market keyboards possible?
Keyboards are software.
You're looking to map hardware.
You need root to do that.
There are very easy Play Store apps that (once you're rooted) make it easy (I.e ButtonRemapper)

But of course I can't do that now, given that I can't even RUU back to 1.85.
Man, I know I have short thumbs and all, but does no one else have trouble using the phone right-hand only?
Dude please: I despise the power button. It doesn't click right. I came from a S3 but left it because I hated the home button. Now I found this phone that I completely love, but I hate that button. What we need is a dev to get Sweep2Wake running like on the Tegra model

Yeah the power button could be more clicky. It is hard to press. What i did was flash cm9/10 and use volume wake. WAY better.
So, I think the S3 is great - but I have little things to pick at. Most of all, I can't understand what takes so long between pressing the (hard) home button, for example, and returning to the home screen. I mean, it's silly-long.
I've rooted all my other android phones with great satisfaction. I'm wondering if I root and install a custom ROM - will I be able to fix this. I'm thinking of installing one of the stock builds, but just wondering if they are faster.
Go into s voice and uncheck double tap home to launch s voice... Home button is then MUCH faster

Oh thank you - that's much better!
My GS3's power button is jammed and i rebinded holding the home button down to turn off the screen. If I move the device or slightly touch the power button it thinks its being held down. I'm running a CM11 nightly, is there anyway i can edit a file and disable the button all together?
Try the xposed module Xposed Additions - you can rebind press/long press of the power button to do nothing.
Alternatively, you could edit the key files directly - check system/usr/keylayout, and open sec_keys.kl with a text editor and put a # in front of the power key line. You might have to comment out the power key line in generic.kl too, then reboot and power button will be totally disabled.

I had this same problem on my gs3 a few months ago. It is a hardware problem, not caused by your rom.
What I did, is I found a guide ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1867253 ) that walked me through flashing everything back to stock. I then took it to the store, and they hooked me up with a replacement.
The guy at the counter had never seen it before, but it was clear that it was a hardware malfunction, and therefore not my fault.
Maybe you can do the same
EDIT: added link for reference

I would do this as well but I don't think I can flash the unsecure bootloader on the replacement.

I read it some where on this by ThePagel, he smacked his phone button against some hard plastic object and it fixed the button issue. I suggest to wrap your phone with a towel then smack the button against a wood table....do it at your own risk!! and ThePagel can chime in if you like..

I just downloaded that module and when I press add new button, it asks me to press it but it doesn't receive the input, the button just does what it normally does. Is this because I'm on kitkat?

Good point. I don't know if the replacement would have the new bootloader that can't (as of now) be unlocked or not

I'm gonna have to say its a software glitch for the power button. Its happen to me before. Wipe data and cache is the only thing that fixed it

They got rid of the dedicated menu key years ago. I want to say with the s6. Possibly even the s5. Recents/multi window just made more sense

No idea about after the 5, but long press recents on the S5 brought up the menu.

The keycode for the menu button is still active though and if you're rooted you can use it with the following code:
input keyevent 82
Then just use a pie/gesture/ISAS to launch...or remap another button, etc...
?

You all just solved my issue on the S6...
I used to have a ( : ) on apps that would simulate the menu button. Then I upgraded the custom rom to 6.x.. lost that and couldnt figure out the "Menu Button"
So to answer, just tested. Its Long Press the "Back" button will trigger the menu button.
@Mysticales ? @RuggedHunter I'm not rooted.
