Nexus 5 LED Glitch? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got my Nexus 5 about two weeks ago, great phone, absolutely loving it! although I have a small concern...
On my Nexus 5 whenever I get a phone call, and I answer it, it still blinks an orange notification light and what I'd call a rainbow led light. If I miss the call, it shows orange and then fades to red, sometimes just shows red.
However, after clearing everything out in my recent app switcher, replying to all texts, looking at my notifications and clearing those out, the light is still there. Sometimes, and most of the time, it's just a rainbow looking light and flashes.
The only way to solve this issue is a reboot of the phone. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a software bug, or is it a hardware issue?
I know I've found others with the problem but no solution or answer was really provided. I'm running the stock 4.4.2 KitKat, rooted, but it's 100% stock.

Screen going black

I've tried various different ROM images (including the excellent Dr.Gonzo), and I have this problem with all of them.
When I'm using the phone either with the keyboard in or out, the screen just switches off randomly. If I wait a few seconds (possibly the backlight timer length), then it comes back. Mostly... Othertimes I have to wait a lot longer, but it does always come back.
A reboot sometimes fixes it, but not always - does anything survive a reboot or battery removal?
Anybody else seen anything like this? I have seen a lot of threads about the screen staying on, but not off.
Of course, it could be a hardware fault, but because it's intermittent, it's hard to prove.
Mike
same problem
If you shake the phone can you re-produce this problem? I've never not heard of this being affected by software - you might also want to ensure you're not overclocking it.
Nothing is removed when you do a battery removal or reboot, ensure your connections are all tight and make sure the SIM pins are all making contact and the SIM door closes, apart from that it sounds like a possible bad LCD ribbon.
Shaking it doesn't reproduce the problem.
Once the phone has started doing this, it happens everytime you press a key.
Seems more like a memory leak to me since it always seems to happen after a while of web browsing/email use.
So actually, it looks like it might be a hardware fault.
I think it happens when the device gets warm. After a few minutes with the screen on, keyboard lit up, wifi on, the phone gets pretty warm and that's when the screen seems to go black. Leave to cool and all returns to normal.
Mike
Same issue here, but the screen does not acually go black/blank it just seems that the screen backlight does not turn back on from a standby like state, the phone itself functions but just not able to see whats going on on the screen.
(keyboard lights work fine and come on when expected)
Not sure about the heat theory as it happens (to me) most often right after a call, anything over 30-50 seconds and the backlight problem occurs, when it decides to work again is a matter of luck.
As said before because it's intermittent, it's very hard to prove.
Has anyone who has had this issue, fixed it with a hard reset ?
Very strange ... but also getting very annoying now!
i got the same thing. took it back to warranty and they said nothing's wrong with the phone but i still get this.
I experience the same problems.. it happens pretty random, but every time when you hit a key. I have set all timers to never but the problem is still there.
Running Gonzo 1.1 at the moment, upgraded from guava.. but that didn't solve the problem.
It is getting so annoying now that I am about to throw the s710 in the dustbin
I have had the same problem!
I have turn it back to my provider and no problem now.
i have the same problem with my VOX
apparently, i can still receive phone calls, and do whatever i want with the phone,
but the screen just stays black, its like if you have unplugged your monitor
since i dont have a htc center in my town or anywhere else nearby.
does anyone know a way on how to open the phone, change what need to be changed and correct the problem? im all up for testing if that would resolve this annoying problem :s
cheers everyone
there is a dismantling manual somewhere in this forum. search.
i don't think taking it apart would help you because this is not a physical fault that you can locate.
and i learned that mcel is the retail seller of vox in mozambique. they should be able to help you with service. else just send a mail to htc support and they will guide you.
yes, mcel are the retail sellers, but i tried to go there, and there are no specialists on htc's there,
the thing is, i didnt bought my htc from them, so i can't go there and change for another one
but tks anyway
no problem
but do try to contact htc support by email. they might suggest a way.
I'm having exactly the same weird problem and I think I found some pattern when it occurs. Well, the thing is that in the bright day or in a room with lots of light it works just fine. In the darker conditions… well… not so fine. It seems to me that this screen blackout happens whenever the keyboard light is on and screen changes to full brightness (in the dark, because of the light sensor). In the daylight, keyboard light doesn't turn itself on, so s710 works. I don't know much but this definitely isn't some bad contact problem. Maybe some battery problem, but I doubt it since I can receive phone call in this condition. This started to happen after I flashed this Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM from HTC (I have original S710). Flashing Dr.Gonzo's later on didn't bring any luck either. I believe that some power control SW is the main culprit. I've read that many people mention some Tornado Power Control app. Does anybody know can this application be permanently disabled or removed?
are you trying to say that by desabling the light sensor, the problem might go away?
i would also like to know if it possible to have the baklight on the lowest possible brightness forever, because it seems, on a low brightness the problem might go away

I also have this problem with the lightsensor turned off. And also at (as it seems) random moments.
well, even with the light sensor turned off, the problem persisted.
i got my phone to a repair shop of htc's, and they figured out the problem
my phone is now 100% thankfully, the repair man told that the problem was because of bad or malfunctioned circuits, he exchanged them with new ones, and the problem went away,
dont know wich circuits exactly, and he didnt want to tell me, but i suggest anyone having the same problem to try and do the same
probably its a hardware malfunction with these VOX,
its possible since so many times before i've heard about malfunctioned pieces coming out in large quantities for sale.
anyways, cheers everyone, and good luck Portugal in EURO!
I have the same problem. I just noticed that it usually happens when the phone is warm, so if you need to do something on my phone just... take some ice from fridge and put it on back of your mobile. I cant see any more solutions.
Please someone help us!
Update. Problem Solved
Just thought I'd update this thread I started.
I sent the phone back to my dealer (Grapevine in Poole,UK).
A week later, I got a brand new one back from the HTC repair centre.
So far, so good. Looks like the problem's solved.

Sam problem here,
i called with HTC and they sent them to there repair centre.

Notification Light not working

It seems my notification light is not working regardless what I do. Has anyone else had this issue after rooting and loading the fission rom?
I'm able to reproduce it as it happened both to my phone and a family members phone. I returned to stock rom by SBF and still my notification light doesn't work anymore.
Anyway idea's on how to fix this? Is it possible that our current rooting process breaks the notification light? I have also already tried booting into safe mode to make sure it wasn't an app.
mine works just fine running fission.
Well unfortunately mine is not working at all in either stock unrooted or rooted forms. This only started after I rooted the phone. Please don't tell me Motorola added a new "feature" that breaks the notification light if the phones been modified.
I would really like to figure out how to fix this .

Notification light only works with screen off, you know that, right?

Oh I know that. Light will not work with the screen off. I've sent my self several emails to test this. I also have events in my calender at 9:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. which should also be triggering the light and never do. And no I'm not sitting there with the screen on waiting for it.
Every time I sent my self and email I waited to hear the sound notification and then waiting 2 minutes after yet still no light blinks. I think finally turn on the screen to clear the notification from the bar.
Even my facebook notifications which should trigger the light don't either. So far for the last week I've had no notification lights at all no matter what I do.
Right now I've SBF my phone back to stock and have left it unrooted and I'm still not getting any notification lights with the screen off.
I'm not stupid and know that the screen must be off.
possibly the LED is broken...these things happen. it may or may not even be related to the rooting either could of just coincedently broken at the same time. since youve returned your phone to stock and it still doesnt work then that seems the logical conclusion. not sure if someones found a service mode yet where you can test the LED, thats the next thing to try.

That is a possibility but I find it quite unlikely that both phones would have broken notification lights at around the same time.
Is there any applications out there that allow you to flip on the notification light without notifications? I've seen some applications that allow you to change the color of the light if your phone supports but.

Screen Color Problems on Unlock (Really Weird)

I'm having a very strange problem with my Charge. It seems like pretty much every other time I unlock my phone, a color from the RGB spectrum is missing. Which in turn causes the screen to be a weird shade of blue, green or red. I can lock and unlock the phone again and it will be totally normal, but as I stated above, it seems like it's happening quite a lot more often here recently, and I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I know I'm going to call Verizon tonight or tomorrow and see about getting a replacement because it's definitely not a software issue that I can see.
I had that happen once, and only once. However, it hasn't happened since then, so I'm pretty sure it was software related. Have you done a hard reset yet? If not, you need to do that to rule out a software issue. You need to try it for a bit in that clean state before loading 3rd party software to confirm.
I have the same problem, which just started this morning. When I woke up and looked at my phone, as it unlocked, sometimes it had a bluish or greenish tint. This would appear intermittently as I unlocked my phone.
I searched the internet, and found other instances of this happening as well.
I restarted my phone, and the problem hasn't returned since. Something to keep an eye on, but I'm hoping it's not hardware related, but rather software related (and can be fixed with a reboot).
Mko.
I had that happen a couple times. I have not seen it in a long time but it is software related. I could get it to do it a whole lot one day and after a reboot it never happened again.
I've never had this happen to me but I heard the Fascinate had a problem with the screen since amoled was still being developed, you can just attempt what these others have tried(factory reset, reboot, etc)

For me when I unlock the phone it does a black screen with lines for a second, pretty much 5 out of 10 times I unlock my phone. I've already got a replacement charge,so my old one and the new one do it. I'm sending my phone to Samung because Verizon has sent me two charges with scatches on the screen, one also has a dead pixel.
Only had the weird color thing happen once upon unlocking several weeks ago. Locked and unlocked it again and it was normal again. Haven't had it happen again.

I had this happen to me pretty consistently when. I tried running GummyCharged GBE. Rebooting didn't work for me, so I went back to GummyCharged FE, and that's what solved the problem for me, but it's possible that reflashing GBE may have done the trick too. I never tried that because I thought the issue was related to the ROM.

Well I called Verizon, and while they didn't have it listed as a known issue, I was told to reboot because it was more than likely a software issue. I did just that and haven't had this happen since.
Having said that, I noticed something else, the screen was at a different brightness nearly every time I unlocked it and it wasn't a funny color. Either full on 100% or dim as could be, never anywhere in between. I also stumbled upon an article from a lesser known tech site that suggested that the auto-brightness function was indeed the culprit. Seems to make perfect sense given what I saw. I've had this happen once in a blue moon before the other day, and as others stated after a lock/unlock all was well, but this was a different experience altogether. Hopefully this software problem can be fixed with an update (GB maybe? Probably right as they release Ice Cream Sandwich...).
As a side note my screen also does the gray lines once in a while, just 2 or 3 down the whole length of the screen for a split second before an unlock. Seems like it's not an issue so far.
I've had a completely black screen--my lockscreen will flash and just go black, but sliding where the normal unlock would be turns on the display to Home. Kind of odd, and I've only seen it twice.

Black Screen of Death

I've had this happen a few times, and I think it might be caused by an app.
This happens to me when in a Call. 15 mins into call, phone locks up, reboots. Sometimes calls still going, screen is black and won't respond reboots.
I'm thinking it might be one of the two apps:
Google Music (Been trying this recently)
Google Voice (Has happened when using this)
I'm wondering if anyone else is having issues. I've gone down to bare minimum. No launcher, or major changes. Just the minimum apps.
Right now on EB 2.3.7 (Oct 10 Release).
Previously on EB 1.07 (Old release, but phone stable on it).
Haven't really tried any other ROMs. I'm pretty sure its not the ROM. Google Voice did cause Havoc when using it all the time and rebooted my phone.
Just wondering if anyone else has this Black Screen of Death.
happens to me too, but im on stock gingerbread. some times i turn the screen off and when i try to turn it back on, nothing happens. It also happens in calls as well alot. very annoying.
Yea I had that too. I think it is an issue with the stock dialer. I had this on CM7 too. I noticed it would do that after being on the phone for a while. Seems the proximity sensor would detect me removing the phone from the side of my head a few times, then would become unresponsive.
More times then I'd like, I would have to pull the battery after a call or until the other party disconnects, which closes the phone app and it comes back to life.
I've paid a few bills and ordered Pizza from a few places where they "can't disconnect" and require the outside party to end the call... which this bug would force me to try to remove the battery while still connected to the call.
MIUI's dialer is wonderfully awesome and has NEVER done this. MIUI is based off CM7 so I don't think it is the kernel or OS... but rather the stock dialer itself.
Try downloading Go Contacts and using its dialer or Dialer One. See if that fixes it... or just convert to MIUI.... or pull the MIUI dialer and use on other roms.
I have this a lot, very annoying but never while in call. Only when in my pocket, charging or when im doing something, shutoff the screen then try to get back to what i was doing, it will just freeze up with softkeys lit, or random reboots.. I went back to froyo, it hasn't happen in 2days now.. And as for the MIUI dialer, you cannot add it to any other rom

Same thing here, i noticed its when i place my cell in my magnetic pouch, it does that (black screen of death, no response, have to remove batt.)with the latest miui, any help will be so grateful.
the weirdest thing happened... i read this thread earlier and i was thinking to myself that i was lucky my phone didn't do this and i haven't experienced it. not even an hour later, i went to call someone, left a voicemail and everything. when i took the phone away from my ear and went to hang up the screen was completely blank! the soft keys were lit and everything and my status bar was even hanging up top but i couldn't end the call or do anything. needless to say i had to pull the battery all while still leaving a voicemail... i just thought it was so weird this had never happened to me before and now it just did. hopefully it's not a daily occurrence or i'll be really upset

LED Inconsistencies

Anyone else noticing any LED notification inconsistencies? It seems the LED has a mind of its own. Sometimes shutting down the phone and restarting seems to help, other times not.
I'm on pure stock and version 4.4.2.
I'll get an email and get no notification at all. Then I'll get another email (same application) and then get LED notification. Sames goes for SMS. It just seems so sporadic. There is no notification ever for missed calls at all.
I've tried programs like Light Flow and Light Manager, but really don't want to pay for the pro version of Light Flow to make my LED work as it should and Light Manager seemed to conflict at times with certain apps.
The LED notification is one of the most important things to me. It just needs to work and work all the time. Seriously thinking about trading my Nexus 5 for an LG G2 because of this.
Op turn off pulse notifications in settings reboot phone and than turn it back on and reboot.

Pretty sure I've done that before, but I'll give it another try. Thanks.
Sorry can't provide a solution, but I can confirm that I've had that issue on CM11 and SlimKat. But then I had it on my GNex with various ROMs sometimes too. I had just kind of resigned myself to the LED doing its own thing...

i noticed that also,,,but yesterday i reset my phone since then everythng is ok,,,dont know how long it will last,,,,,but i dnt thnk u should trade N5 just because it has sum soft issue which can easily be solved by an update or app like Light flow or Light manager..
Same problem here, the led shine when he wants when I receive a whatsapp message

Well, it's not working as it should. What good is an LED light for notification if it works when it feels like it. I explained why I don't want to use either of those apps. Again, the LED light should work properly. It doesn't. I never had any issues with the LED on my GS3. It worked all the time without issue.
Every phone has its issues. I know it doesn't help but for the record I do not experience these issues. Never installed Light flow as the default functionality "just works" and even blinks more often since 4.4.2 I hope light flow isn't causing more issues then it helps.
