Setup adb correctly, install the correct drivers and see you have the latest bootloader (HHZ11k) installed to be able to flash CM11. Ans as said read the stickies and OP`s of the dev threads.

Specially do always a backup! A nand backup is preferred. The nightly are not always stables and sometime you are stuck in bootloop. Anyway enjoy

Updating ROMs

I've looked around for a little while and can't find any thread that says how to go from one build of a custom ROM to another... I feel extremely noobish asking this as well. I'm on build 11 of bean's custom JB ROM and there have been three new builds and I'm wondering if I need to do a full wipe as if I were flashing a ROM from stock, or if I just go ahead and do a dirty flash... Thanks in advance for the help

It's really at your own discretion. You can dirty flash, but you might have issues, but clean flashes are always the best path to take. Although, sometimes the devs do recommend a clean flash on some releases when they change something major.

Personally I always dirty flash. A couple of times I've encountered problems, made a backup then wiped to troubleshoot the problem, but its never fixed anything so I just revert to my backup. YMMV
Just read and follow the install instructions for the specific rom.

The OP usually tells you what you need to do. If there are major changes, they will tell you to wipe. Sometimes, dirty flashing is okay, just make sure that you follow the directions from the dev that created the ROM.

But if you encounter errors after dirty flashing, always do a full wipe and reflash before reporting them.

Just dirty flash it. Backup your apps and etc... prior just in case you do run into issues.

Format and flash.
As a general rule, I do an App backup (I tend to like My Backup Pro for app backups), a full nandroid backup, then dirty flash (wiping dalvik/cache) and see how it goes. Best case, everything works and I save myself a ton of time not having to restore apps/reapply settings. Worst case, if I have problems that don't seem to be generally reported, I do a full wipe and clean install.

First flash

Hi, I've installed recovery and flash on several tablets, and used Odin a few times but I've never installed cm on a phone so I'm a little uneasy about this process.
I have an att sgh i977 infuse, are the instructions just as simple as what is in the cm10.2 dev forum? Or do I need to worry if it is some sort of other breed of infuse?
Sent from my GT-P3110 using xda app-developers app
They are the working and universal steps and you must follow them carefully and in a relaxed mood.
I've got problems trying to find a working and stable gapps.
I'm currently using latest version of CM10.1 with gapps 12/12 signed/modified which is very stable and battery efficient ROM.
Remember find how to unbrick first and get a working CWM.
Thank you for the response
I've read the instructions and feel comfortable, I've just seen enough posts saying I bricked my device to ask first.
this is not a which rom is the best question but are you saying to stick with cm10.1 for now ? Ive ran both on my tablet and the differences are not important I just want a fairly smooth rom
And am very used to cm10.x

Thanks running cm10.1
Which runs faster and smoother than stock

[Q] I want to root, but...is it worth it?

I apologize for asking this question since there are several variants of it all over this forum. I just haven't quite found the answers I'm looking for.*
When you read this and respond, please keep in mind that I am a major noobie. Pretend you're talking to a child. **
My reason for wanting to root is to take advantage of certain apps like BoostVolume, AdAway and TitaniumBackup (can't remember the others I wanted...).
At this time, I don't want to install a custom ROM. I'm just not ready to take that chance.*
So...
Can I get some of the benefits of rooting without installing a custom recovery?*
* * *If so, what will I gain and lose by doing this?*
* * *Will I still get OTA updates? *Will an OTA update remove root access?
For some reason, I'm really stuck on continuing to get OTA updates...I guess I don't want the responsibility.
There are good threads for "major noobies" to read.
Start with the "read before you root" thread at the top of this q&a forum. Also, search general for "ota help-desk". There is a rooting thread stuck at the top of general too.
Please read those then let is know if you have any questions

Thanks so much! *I've been searching and reading all week, and I either found conflicting answers or unclear answers...frustrating.
I had read "Before you root" previously, but hadn't yet found the Beginner thread (top of General), which has been the most helpful.

Yeah, I'm not sure why I'm leery of flashing the updates. I guess I have to take it slowly and start with rooting (without custom recovery).
I don't think you can root without custom recovery. Don't worry about it. If anything goes wrong, which is very very unlikely, you can restore to stock in fastboot.
Sent from my Nexus 5
If you are going to root, I really suggest getting s custom recovery too. Then you can make a nandroid backup and generally undo most problems that may happen by returning to that "snapshot" of the os.
But using fast boot to restore a factory image will fix these too, with stock recovery, but will erase data.

You can root by booting into a custom recovery and then flashing supersu, fastboot boot recovery.img. You don't need to install one.

I had planned on using CF-auto-root, so I didn't need a custom recovery. I had based that on my fear of changing too much, but I also saw this, which I'm probably misunderstanding?
From Chainfire: (I am personally moving away from custom kernels and recoveries, for various reasons).
The more I think I understand, the more confused I get. It seems I'm getting lost in the terminology. To completely understand my options, I need to back up and go through the definitions and CLI commands again. A lot of what you're saying is going over my head. I think I've read too much and some information just isn't sticking.

Don't worry. It's actually very easy. If you know about 2 fastboot commands you'll know just about anything you need to.
fastboot oem unlock, unlocks the bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img, puts a custom recovery on your phone

[Q] Few question about flashing rom

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2694142(the URL address for the rom I want to flash in)
Here I want to flash this rom which call insertcoin m7 rom maybe, I have never flash any rom before, but I know how to fix the brick phone.(because of the system update make my phone brick, also I know how to flash rom.)
Ok here is the questions
1.is there any possibility to brick the phone when flashing this rom, and is there any problem that happen and cannot fix by ourself and must sent to repair?
2what kind of important function does not work(such as vibrate, notification, signal etc)(in that articles just said the htc blablabla special function won't work... and the something i don't know)
3. Is this rom stability as good as original rom or CyanogenMod or other rom.
is there any rom interface like sence 6?
You're trying to flash this rom on the nexus 5? If so there is a good chance you'll brick the device. Only flash roms for your specific device
