So I was near my local Verizon store while out for lunch and decided to pop in and check out the dot view case in person I can't say why, but I decided to boot the two demo unit devices into bootloader. To my surprise they were S-OFF, found it interesting.

Bastards. Like they need it. If you told a Verizon rep their demo device was s-off they'd look at you like you were retarded. I would have been more jealous if they had an s4 at launch with an unlocked bootloader ( which never happened for those that don't know) wouldn't you agree andybones?

Very much so, the SG4 certainly deserved an unlocked bootloader, it's too bad that never panned out.. I had to sell my SG3 + SG4 for personal reasons.
The thing that really makes me curious about these S-OFF Demo Units is if they were like this from the start.. I bought my phone before they even had them out display (got at store at 1:40pm, they couldn't even take them out until 2pm lol)
If they were S-OFF before we had the software S-OFF I wonder if they would of let me take the Demo Unit lol, I also wonder what if any is the difference between that Demo Unit, It seemed just the software..
although with no RUU being on Demo Unit software and S-OFF wouldnt do me very much good.
Either way I found it quite interesting as I have never looked to see if HTC devices are S-OFF at Verizon..
I should have checked out the HTC M7, maybe I will tmw.

I believe that HTC sent the phones S-OFF.
Why can't they ship them all that way lol.
I can't see why a Demo Unit would need S-OFF though.

Yes agreed, strangely the Demo Uints were S-OFF and LOCKED.
Just my guess, but the Demo Units they send have special software on them normally. For instance, after a certain period of time it looks through "demo" mode. They might have been shipped that way to allow for custom loading of system level items in case HTC wants to update them. Those devices on Display are normally Vendor (HTC in this case) owned.

Ive seen today that the atrix has root, I also seen that the post was made by alot of you cappy owners hero designgears. Just wondering how many are leaving? I will be sticking by htc's side. I hated my captivate for the couple weeks I had it when it was launched, such a cheap device, and was to easy for some processes and involved no work. The Inspire is where its at in my mind for now, dual core or not this ***** flys and does work for me.
Nope HTC > than Motorola as far as dev community is concerned. I'm happy with my purchase and could have pre-ordered the Atrix for the same money I was looking at for this phone.
Sticking with HTC. I believe the grass is greener here. ;-)

It has root, but they still don't know if the boot loader is locked. If it is, there will be no way to install custom roms. as far as I know nobody has cracked their bootloader encryption.
As far as fastboot not working, did you hit the power button to switch to h boot to loss the image? On the SD card I had to use the instructions to get my image then I used the utility to write the image and had no problems. @gunny ya I am curious on that as well. Bootloader controls their destiny. Yes... it's because we're gadget geeks and have the attention span of a 2 year old! I got the Inspire because I couldn't wait until March 6th (the original Atrix release date) to dump my POS Craptivate.
My biggest complaint with the Inspire: No HDMI out... but I figured I'll be staring at a 4.3" screen much more often than hooking up a 4" screen phone to a TV. Also I hate where they placed the micro-usb port on the Atrix.
it just has stuff i dont need, hence finger print scanner, an outrageous priced dock. If I buy anything moto it will be the xoom

This will be useful for future HTC Devices
One thing that concerns me is that HTC say they will not provide official ROMs (RUUs)
What does this mean for me?
You now have the ability to change the way the bootloader works, meaning that you can customize software on your device. HTC will not provide this customized software for your device, and we will not provide our official ROMs for customers to download. Once you have unlocked your device, you have agreed to the disclaimer that states that in the event of your rendering your device unusable, you will have to bear the responsibility for the recovery of your device, whether by repair or by other means.
Click to collapse
I'm hoping that all the RUUs we get are leaked, and that we will (presumably) still continue to get them?
EDIT
Looks like HTC have updated their website, it no longer says this. It said it earlier today but they have now changed it.
I dont care!!!
Who cares???
I already have it..
Yup... most incredible thing is how little anyone gives a f*%k.
Particularly anyone here.
They opened the stable door... but long after the horses bolted anyway.
There state some very interesting things in the disclaimer:
It is our responsibility to caution you that not all claims resulting or caused by or from the unlocking of the bootloader may be covered under warranty.

They do not drop the warranty immediately. Only if you damage your phone caused by bad software.
Some content on your device may also be invalidated and cannot be accessed any more because of invalid DRM security keys.
Click to collapse
Content will probably not be available anymore, like HTC Watch.
We do not guarantee that updating your device via FOTA will not render your device unusable.

They will even drop support for their own updates.
However, due to some of our carrier customers concerns, certain models with specific restrictions may not be able to be unlocked.

Phones with branding will probably not be able to be unlocked.
So, they stil provide warranty for hardware parts, fair enough, judging by the posts regular users are making here it will be totaly insane from them to offer software support also.

Nothing worked on the phone besides the launcher. The slide up notifications per icon was badass. But it had no network service or WiFi. Not even a play store. Had a bunch of apps but they were dummy icons. He said it was for development purposes and show. It was extremely smooth though. I asked about the boot loader and he said yes to being unlocked. He was quick to answer and said that it is the first Motorola device to ever ship with an unlockable boot loader. He said it would be kinda similar to the gnexs. There will be an easy to access option out of the box to unlock the boot loader.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
He also gave me a statistics speech about why they have ignored bootloader unlock claims in the past but I don't remember. I was playing with the phone lol. But I'll ask again when he comes around next month. Had something to do with percentage and how we the people asking for the unlocked boot loader are only a 1%

If you can get information on the bootloader unlock process that'd be awesome. The Atrix HD has an option but doesn't say a code. If the Photon Q shows the code for you when you run 'fastboot oem unlock' then I think it would mean hard work to get the Atrix HD unlocked.

Thanks for sharing this - still surprised that the phone is marketed with business users, as subjectively put... in mind - being that the battery is fixed, what options have you heard for individuals needing more power for voice calls on the go?
I loved the previous one which I still use - mainly for it's swappable batteries for continuous voice calls - not everyone has the chance to be by a power source to charge (e.g. wall / car). There are external power packs as I mentioned in another post; (either by solar or pre-charged that plug into the microusb).

oh damn! i didnt even think of looking. he was in the store for about half an hour talking to us about it. i spent most my time testing out the keyboard and messing around with the new UI. which btw on the 19th, 20th at the latest i hope to see this new launcher ported to other devices! trust me, everyone will love it! they took features from jellybean and pimped them up for ics on the q
our store should get them by this friday. if so then ill get the model number for you then. and whatever else you need. and sense the bootloader is unlocked it should be fairly easy for me to extract an image from it to post here before the 19th
actually.. we would probably get the demo phone before the actual phones.. which should be in the next few days. demo phones are no different than the real thing. they come to us with a demo video app preinstalled. we have factory reset our demo phones before and used them as a store phone. could someone point me in the right direction of getting an image from this phone? **safely**. dont want to **** the phone up and get fired lol
ive never tried with dump_image but i would imagine that might work. ideally we could root it and grab the images that we need then unroot it easily enough. once it launches and the tool comes out i could put out the CWM and have people unlock to root
I haven't seen this addressed, so please forgive if I've overlooked the thread.
Does unlocking the bootloader via their tool provide root access? That is, will unlocking the boot loader be sufficient to give apps like Titanium Backup and ES File Explorer root access, or do I have to flash a custom ROM?
What are the side effects of unlocking? The Motorola page implies the phone may detonate or give you cancer or the like. I don't much care about DRMed media, so as long as the rest of the device's functionality works that's all I care about.
Thanks for any insight.
As far as I know (and i was confused as well), unlocking the bootloader does not mean the phone is rooted, it just ALLOWS for root or installing custom ROMs to be done more easily.
Does rooting with shabbypenguin's method modify the existing rom or does it install a new one? I can't tell from the instructions and I want to be sure I'm not going to erase my phone before I do it.

Hope you've already unlocked the bootloader, that process will wipe the phone. Rooting it will not.
For the current root method, you need to first unlock the bootloader, then flash a custom recovery with fastboot. Once you have that recovery in place, you can flash the su binary to have root in the system partition.
root will not bring anyside effects unless you install something that will, watch out for unknown SU requests
only side effect of root is losing the full use of some apps and total lose of some as well, taking in mind that some app developers block root users in one fashion or another

FASTBOOT availability
Anyone know where to get FASTBOOT without using mediafire or one of the other servers? I am at work with proxy restrictions...

Fastboot? You get that with adb... Which you should never download from mediafire!!
If you just want fastboot by itself, see this page.

went to get a q but my sprint store and the nearest best buy they were out (could have back ordered but I didn't), was looking at getting a s3 instead but with all the apple vs samsung crap I decided to wait a little while......maybe price will drop, on the q.. next friday ill have another good check to buy a q if they are in stock, for now I'm lurking and trying to learn everything I can about the q hoping when I get it I can start cranking some roms out for it...

If you didn't grab your Q yet...you can order it online through Sprint and get it for free!! The offer is ending soon though! I just got mine for free and look forward to unlocking and stuff! LOL

Simply put: if you enjoyed the firmware on the GS3, your experience with its successor will be just as rapturous, if not more so. If you're hoping to run custom ROMs in place of TouchWiz, you may have to wait for a little while since Samsung has confirmed to us that the bootloader is locked.

That is what they say on the GS4 review. I have talked to another reviewer and he can confirm that there is a "Write Protection: Enabled" entry on his Sprint review unit.
Sprint has never locked bootloaders, and it is company policy that they do not deny warranty for root/custom ROM reasons. Can anyone confirm that this entry is disabled/bootloader is not locked on international/unlocked models?
Edit: NEW INFO! Write Protection is universal to all i9505. It does not determine bootloader lock status. So far it appears that it only is write protection on bootloader (probably to prevent bricking). Only confirmed models with bootloader lock are the Verizon and AT&T GS4.
This isn't good. I can't believe that Sammy is gonna start pulling this crap. Looks like custom roms and kernels will be a while. I'm curious about international version as well.

I just want someone with an international GS4 to please post a photo of their download mode, a photo like this:

If there is a Write Protection: Enabled entry, we're in for some rough times ahead.
Samsung is really trying hard to get us to hate them. Seriously, I don't mind that you can't employ some decent designer to get your **** sorted out as far as touchwiz is concerned, now you lock the bootloader too? Seriously Samsung?
Could someone with international S4 confirm if theirs have write protection enabled too?
I'm going to cancel mine Monday morning if this proves out. Locked bootloader = no sale. Does seem odd that both sprint and AT&T owners are now saying that they have root and have accessed the bootloader...

AT&T and Verizon are definitely, 100% guaranteed to be locked. I remember from the VZW GS3 days that root was very easy, the problem was custom kernels for sure, and possibly custom ROMs. My memory is a bit fuzzy because I never had to read too deeply about the issue, none of my friends ever got a VZW GS3.
There are already several AT&T folks who are saying they have successfully rooted their phone. If this is correct it seems almost a slam dunk that the international unlocked versions will not be a problem. Guess its something we just have to see going forward as they get into peoples hands.

Worst case scenario, I think kexec was what people used to sidestep issues with bootloader locks. Kludgy, but it worked.

Uh oh. Has anyone contacted Adam Outler? He was the one that managed to crack the bootloader on the VZW GS3 last time this happened.
@djwilliams - yours is career locked right? Not international?
This is really bad news.

Root has been achieved on Qualcomm based S4's. All carriers.
Check the AT&T S4 forum
I have the international i9500 version and there is no write protection enabled on the download screen. Guess the international one is not locked.
