Scratches after 4 days? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had my nexus 5 for 2 weeks now.
4 days ago i've peeled off the screen protector it came with.
I haven't noticed any imperfections on my screen, but this night i checked the screen to find out... 6 scratches?! 6?
So in 4 days i got 6 scratches? That's emberrasing!
I wouldn't recommend this phone to anyone anymore.

Or just be more carefull, i have mine for 4 months now and have 0 scratches. I would recommend it to to anyone

used it with the care of a new phone, i never dropped it.
It can't get sctratched just by "touching the table, or anything other than soft material" that's dumb...
It's not like i slid it across the table, just placed it on table or plastic...

I bought the phone the day it was announced, got it a fee days later.. Never had a screen protector on it and it still looks brand new. It's no different than any other phone with a screen...

Micro scratches happen to all my phones and the n5 is no better or worse. Screen protectors are the best way to prevent.
Dont forget its the fine grains and dust that cause the most damage and these can hide in pockets and what not.

just buy a tempered glass and you won't think about it anymore

I think the implication is that the screen is more prone to scratches than other screens (which may or may not be true). You might be more inclined to not recommend an Audi if the paint protection was inferior and it scratched easily.

u stand correct :good:

It sucks that your phone got scratches so early, but in my experience it's no more scratch prone than any other device.

a protector doesnt do much...if you wont use a good one...just use a full cover case and you be fine!

i had my sensation for 2 years . I had screen portector maybe like maximun 5 months of it's total usage and the only scratches i had before i re-sold it were these really deep ones, it didnt had hairline scratches like on the nexus 5.
Did gorilla glass got worse from 1 to 3?

Monkey Glass is still glass. You have to be careful with your device, I´ve never used a screen protector on my GS3 and N5 and never had any scratches. I use a good case though and never put my phone in a pocket with other stuff inside it eg. keys
Even if it should scratch, this is a phone, not a sacred object you have to pray at

How durable is the HOX screen..? I have 3 scratches already...

I do not understand how these scratches came about, never keep keys in my pocket. Just normal usage (in and out of pockets and resting on table). My iPhone took a lot more abuse than this HOX yet there is so much more damage to my screen for the HOX.
Anyone else noticed this problem?
Keys won't scratch it. Sand and other hard, gritty things that reside in pockets will. It's not a problem, it's glass. Normal glass is hard to scratch, ours is even harder. If your screen got scratched, it was because something very hard (like sand) came in contact with it.
I've been using mine since launch without any kind of screen protector (or case) and have yet to get a scratch on the screen *knocks on wood*
Honestly, if your screen was scratched 99% of the time it was due to sand in your pocket.
Actually......ive had like 4 one x devices, they all held up just fine. Except one replacement i recieved, which by the way was used!!! Insurance claim! It came with about 30 little scratches on the screen! I sent it back, and they sent me a brand new, in the original box, scratch free one x!!! anyways......my suggestion.....get a zagg! I finally gave in and bought one. I figured with the gorrilla glass i wouldnt need 1! But after seeing, and hearing stories, i finally gave in and got it! And im glad i did! I got the hd, and its badass! Cant even tell its there! So long story short, get a zagg. Lol.

if my screen is off, I can see very, very, very fine scratches in my glass. Nothing major at all, but makes me wonder how its going to look in the next 4-5 months. I'm not downgrading this sick ass screen with a protector. One of the top reasons I bought it to begin with

I have two of these phones - one has developed small scratches a little too easy for my liking. Anyhow, thanks for this info, will try the Zagg, had not heard of them cheers :good:
I don't use screen protectors or cases. I've got a couple of hairline scratches that are only visible when the screen is off and it's held under the light at a certain angle. And that's after I dropped it onto the road and it slid across the road screen side down. Gorilla glass did it's job. If you look after it, it won't get scratched.

I swear that HTC phones scratch by just looking at them. I had an inpire 4g and in 2 weeks with careful use a scratch about 1/2" long that you could hang your fingernail on just showed up on the screen. I was pissed. After that I got the Samsung infuse and used it with no screen protector and never got a scratch. After the infuse I got the gs2, never a scratch. I used the international galaxy note, never a scratch. Then comes the HOX and after 2 days of using this phone it gets 2 scratches, one an inch long and the other 1/2" long, both you could hang your fingernail on. I took it back for other reasons and got the unlocked gs2 from negri, used it for a month never a scratch. I bricked that phone by flashing an ICS leak and decided to give the HOX another try because I really like sense and the way the phone looks. After babying my HOX for maybe 3 days I go to bed not noticing any scratches, pick up my phone to check xda, and I see the rainbow effect of a deep scratch. I turn on the light and sure enough there is a scratch you can hang your fingernail on. The next day I bought the zagg hd shield and it hides the scratch good enough for me but it still pisses me off that HTC phones scratch so easily. The HOX is still my favorite phone to date, even with the scratched up screen.

If what your saying is true, I'd say you just had some back luck. The One X I own doesn't have a single scratch (on the screen) and I've dropped it on cement, bathroom tiles, and some other stuff without any kind of case.
Well if wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all.

Should answer all your questions related to how durable the screen is lol.
I've somehow managed to get a couple very minor scratches in mine. Not sure what from exactly but they are the kind that you have to tilt the phone so that the light reflects just the right way while the screen is off to be able to see them. Hindsight being 20/20 I should have invested in a screen protector but in all honesty it isn't that big of a deal. Aside from those extremely minor blemishes, the screen has held up very well against drops and normal wear.
For anyone that doesnt know about zagg already.........they cost around 25 bucks for the hd, and its well worth the money! I swear on everything, its just like looking at the screen without it. And the best part.........its guarenteed for life!!!!!!! Anything happens, or you get a replacement......its like 3 bucks for shipping. I suggest anyone with an expensive device get one. Gorrilla glass or not. Just saying.

I'm notorious for scratching my phone screens, but not a single scratch on my HOX since I got it in May. I don't use a screen protector, just a soft plastic case on the body. The dang thing has been dropped, put in my pocket with my keys, even had the new pup grab it... Nothing, so I'm very pleased.

Seems like the OP answered their own question, since if they have 3 scratches already, I think they already know how durable the screen is?
My HTC One X is having the same exact problem. I have been battling between AT&T & HTC for them to replace my screen but they are both telling me that these scratches are not covered because they are "physical damage". I moved to the One X from an iPhone 4 and never used a screen protecter for 2 years and I just sold the phone to Gazelle as excellent condition...the screen was flawless with no scratches. This issue only seems to be effecting a handful of users but IT IS a defect!!!
This post on Gizmodo kind of sums it up.

In my opinion, the review is BS. The phone gets occasionally warm but not that hot. I've not even once had it dial by itself in my pocket (and I keep it an average 8 hours a day in there), then the guy expects to drop the phone and leave no marks on the screen or casing, and then he ends his review with 5 hours battery life - just explain hiw can you get that with normal or even heavy use (unless you play games and don't put the phone down for like 4 hours).
Edit: and yet, he is rating the phone 4/5...

XO Skins

Well, I received my XO skin screen protector today that I bought with my 55% off coupon code. But it turns out, they actually sent me the screen protector AND back protector, for the same price of $6. This happen to anyone else? But yeah. Loving it so far. Haven't turned on my phone yet, I did cringe a bit at the amount of application fluid entering the speakers. Hope everything is okay So far, I haven't noticed any orange peel texture on the protectors. They don't have too much friction, so it's not like you're sliding your finger across a piece of rubber. It does repel fingerprints like they claim they do. I think the screen protector IS worth the normal price of $12. So yeah, I give it a big thumbs up.

I got mine too. It's VERY good quality to my surprise. I also bought the XtremeGuards ones and XO is much better in quality. It doesn't have the "orange peel" effect and just feels smoother as your swipe across the screen.
Anyways, you'll love it and good luck!
i've used XO before on my OG Evo4G and it was great! no yellowing or nothing however I'm also considering tempered glass screen protectors like SGP'S GLAS.t... so which one would be better? and why?

I got the full body one and its..... full body lol... jkjk so for the front it covers 99% the whole front glass, and for the back it have some gaps between the camera and the protector, and the speaker and camera. For the case fit I heard that it's smaller in size to leave space for say like bumpers or cases
Just got a front cover in the mail, waiting to see if I can live with the buzzing before I apply it.
Applied mine in the bathroom last night (heard steam from a shower helps prevent dust?).
How long should I leave it? Been about 12 hours now. As the OP said, the only concern is the amount of fluid you get in the speaker.
The fit was perfect, measured right down to the mm. I might due to human error be a tiny bit off, but it's lined up as well as I'll probably get it without being obsessive.
I ordered the full body one before the Nexus 4 was released.. Love the product except my back piece doesnt have the speaker cut out. Contacted them twice and have been told that there should be 2 on my at no cost but we will see
You really don't have to leave the phone off for long. Just really light use for a day to not let it heat unevenly

I just applied mine and left it for an hour. Then I turned my phone on to check my speaker. They're perfectly fine But yeah, I only left it off for 1 hour, and it was already solid on it. But it was probably still drying a bit more.
Mines has dried with some streaks. Best way to describe are thin say 0.5cm horizontal lines, which reflect colours in certain light. Instructions say streaks should go away in 24-48 hours, its been over 24 and they're not budging yet.

Oh, no way... Sorry man. Do you know how you got the scratch? I always used to get a screen protector right away, but after one started peeling off my Galaxy S3, I just took it off and never looked back. It's been over 6 months without a protector and not one scratch. Although, I am careful about where I put it. Our Nexus 5's have Gorilla Glass just like my Galaxy S3 does, so hopefully it will be okay without one. I'm still debating if I should get one. I'm not sure what the best screen protector is for the N5. I still need to order a case for mine too. I just got it yesterday. I'm liking it...

If you're going to get one get a glass screen protector. Those plastic ones no matter how good people say they are don't compare at all to the amazing feeling of glass. Glass screen protectors provide scratch protection, protect screen from cracking, and still feel great. Those plastic ones do none of that well.

Having Google send you a new phone under false pretenses because you have a scratch on your screen seems pretty ****ty to me.

Absolutely NO !! on a screen protector...
The main reason is a selfish one....
When I go to sell my Nexus 5 on "Swappa" I don't need the extra competition for selling a "mint device" .
screen protectors are so cheap that i think the real question here is... is there any reason not to get one? I was going to buy one but luckily, the case i bought (spigen) came with one.
There is no value in this Thread...OP, buying a screen protector is on you, either you feel you need it or not.

[Q] already scratched nexus 5

Hello i have got a white nexus 5... from playstore.. I have been using the device since 3 months and today peeled off the protection plastic that covers the glossy sides.. when i removed it i noticed that it had been already scratched.. u can say it has lines all over it and hwnn u see it with light u can see them only in the middle section.
now i haven't dropped my phone anywhere!
from the very first day it has arrived i have been using a ringke hybrid case..
and since it had that plastic for all the time there was no contact.
i haven't used my phone without the cover..
i never applied any skin etc.
i use a screen protector from very first day. (i had the packaged screen guard on for a month)
what can i do?
should i contact google..
its a lot of them quite evident..
and i dont see how my misuse (if i ever did) could cause it..
HELP PLEASE
3 months old.... Sounds like quite the fight with goggle coming up. Tough for a company to determine if it was caused by manufacture defect or end user. Best of luck

Do you use a screen protector?

Hi,
I've always used a screen protector on all my previous phones, i only take it off when i'm about to upgrade.
I can seem to find a good one for the galaxy s8 so i'm considering going without one.
Those who don't use screen protectors, are there any scratches on your phones?
Thank you!

This glass scratches easily for me. I went about 2 weeks without one. Being very careful I still found very small scratches.... Can't really see them without looking at a certain angle but definitely there. Go with an armorsuit wet apply. Just take your time putting it on and let it rest over night. Applied it with good pressure and it came out perfect for me. Don't even notice I have one. No lifted edges eaither.

My phones don't scratch. I don't really need a case or a screen protector, but there were times when I would put a matte screen protector(ArmorSuite) to eliminate fingerprint smudges. I don't keep my phones long enough to warrant buying accessories for it.

You can of course buy screen protector, it won't do harm to your device. It of course depends how well you take care of devices. For example one of my friends drops phones a lot or just while talking may hit it against some object(not on purpose). If my screen doesn't get scratched, I don't see a point in buying one. The longest I have used a phone is for 6 month(many years ago) and after that all of my phones were used no more than 3 months.

I don't want you to get an impression that I am rich Basically what I do is: Buy a good phone of my choice(I buy mostly used in excellent condition), use it for few months and when you see something you like, sell it(I sell on eBay), then purchase another model with the money you got from selling your previous phone - this continues for many years. Just take good care of the phone(no scratches, marks...) and if you don't use accessories that came with your phone, then it is even better and you can get better price.

I tried without for few days. Scratches are visible. Good to get protected.
I never saw the point in a screen protector. Gorilla glass is really hard to scratch. My s5 after over 2 years of heavy use only had a few very minor scratches, and the screen on the s8 is even less scratchable. Unless you regularly use sandpaper to navigate your phone, you shouldn't need a screen protector.

Lol on the sandpaper. Ive had my s8+ since April 19th and so far just two dry minute scratches, unnoticeable unless very close inspection.

I've had my S8 since it launched and I don't have a physical screen protector on it. All of my previous devices had glass screen protectors on them. Since this phone has curves I didn't bother with one. The TPU protectors I can't stand because they dent soo easily, and for me it's worse than having scratches on the glass. I have very minimal scratches that can only be seen in certain lighting which don't bother me at all. I decided to buy the Woosh Diamond Defence liquid screen protector after the scratches appeared to help reduce future scratches (also applied some on my camera lens). I've had it on for about a month and no new scratches have appeared (that I can see) so far.
I have a case. I tried a protector but like normal I got annoyed and threw it away. No scratches and I've had it for about 4 months now. I hate screen protector they make the phone look worse than if they had scratches so what's the point? It's like when people cover there couch with those ugly ass plastic covers.

This is the same screen protector I use on my S8+ and I have not had any issues with it at all
i'll be applying the Spigen Neo Flex to mine because people seem to have trouble with glass
i've noticed a tiny tiny scratch on the screen and my pockets are always empty
Anyone else kept that plastic protector that came installed on the phone?

This is the kind of thing that scares me. My Note 4 has seen heavy use for almost three years now and the glass is utterly flawless. Lot of these S8 threads have replies like "Oh I've had it a couple months it only has a few scratches on it."
I've always used glass screen protectors on my phones and it's kept them immaculate, but I've tried two diff types of glass ones on my S8+ and I just cannot get them to stay on for any length of time, so I'm going without which sucks, but what can you do?
