[Q] google search app misbehaving - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the following problem. Sometimes if I haven't opened the search app in a while, when I am trying to open it by clicking the search bar, the animation starts and the app closes (the search window minimizes). Then I tap the search bar again and it works. As long as the search app stays in the multitasking tray I can open the search app by clicking the search bar once. If I swipe the search app away from the multitasking tray, then it takes two taps to open the search app as I described above. Do you have the same problem? What should I try? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the google search app but the issue continues.
PS. I am sorry for my english, its not my native language.

Having the same issue. No idea why its really annoying.

How to get voice search icon back

Apparently HTC in their infinite wisdom decided to remove the voice search icon.
Install shortcut, then run it and it will allow you to start the voice search app using whatever method you wish. Then pull the notification bar down and create your shortcut. Dragged mine down to the dock and all is right with the world again.
Anyone notice that the voice search sucks in comparison with CB? It worked much better on my old ATRIX 2.

What do you mean install shortcut? It's not on my launcher drawer, and when I go to Google Play and search for it the "Open" and "Uninstall" buttons are missing..
any ideas?
use a root explorer app and delete it from /system/app . install new version from play store
Awesome tip, I added it to my notification toggles, perfection

How did you do that? Do you have to be rooted?

Just dug around a little, found it.
Add to homescreen --> Shortcuts --> Activities --> Voice Search --> Recognition Activity
Surely you found it by now, so this is for posterity, for other people who stumble upon this page like I did.
Great tip thank you..

I went to Shortcuts, but the first one that pops up is Bookmarks. Is there no other simple way? I can't download and install it because it's already installed...
Alternate Solution
For those who can't make the above solution work, try this: (OK, I'm not permitted to include a link because I'm a "Noob") Go to AndroidCentral and search for "Missing the Voice Search button? Here's the fix!!". It will also refer you to an app on Google Play called "QuickShortcutMaker".

Random Menu Bar appeared on phone?

Hi just wondering if anyone can shed any light on this random menu bar that's appeared on my phone? I've closed all applications with es task manager and it's still there. I'm running Jellybeans on a galaxy note 2
If anyone can direct me where to get rid of it would be most appreciated.
Cheers guys!
Do you mean the bar on the side with the icons?
I think the phone has TSF shell launcher, try a launcher like apex or nova

If that doesn't work you can try this app
I had a app popup as the playstore, and it was a spam type popup from an app i installed a long time ago, DOWNLOAD AIRPUSH detector also as a double check if experience any abnormal popups to your GUI . it found the app and i uninstalled it ASAP (it was a workout app)
That popup is not abnormal, it is a feature of the last update. It's called multi-card, and allows you to manage 2 or more applications simultaneously on the screen; if you drag one of the icons on the desktop it opens the corresponding application, and if you drag another will open the new application under the one that is opened before
That's amazing cheers guys! It was properly bothering me becaues it would pop up every now and then and I didn't know why!
Is it possible to add other applications to the selection to use in multi windows?

I think I have a similar issue. I am able to search after a reboot but after a while it stops working. I think there is a problem with cached processes. Try going to settings > apps > cached processes and stopping the Google Search process. Things should start working. It's not an ideal fix though. Hopefully it's a fixable software bug. I've submitted a bug report to Google so maybe you should try as well?

No problem. As I said, it's not an ideal issue but neither is it a total deal breaker. I wouldn't RMA the phone for such I thing I don't think. It obviously seems like a software problem so I sent through a bug report using the feedback function on the phone itself. Maybe if it's a widespread thing Google can actually take an active look at it and release a fix. to my unqualified mind it seems like there is a problem putting apps into the cached process. I've noticed with more experimenting that the search function seems to stop only after swiping the app away from the multi tasking tray...Seems as though the system is having trouble storing Google Search in cached processes.
Of course, I am not a proper developer so I could be totally wrong.
I'm glad the temporary fix works for you also!

[Q] Apps obscure each other in recent apps when using "Complete action using"

[Q] Apps obscure each other in recent apps when using "Complete action using"
Where I click on a link in my browser, let's say it's a link to an app in the Google Play store, I'm presented with a dialog titled "Complete a action using" and offered a choice of applications to open it in. Let's say I choose "Play Store". Now in the recent apps list accessed by holding down the home button, I see my browser, "Chrome Beta" as an app title but the image is of Google Play. If I click on it, I am taken to the Google Play app and not to Chrome. I can get back to Chrome by opening it again in my launcher, but if I do this, Google Play vanishes from recent apps and opening it again from the launcher presents me with the Google Play "home page" and not the app page I opened from Chrome.
This problem is the same with other app combinations (i.e Chrome and YouTube).
Is there a way to open the Google Play application into it's own new entry in the recent apps list to prevent this problem (which is really annoying when you have a deep click trail exploring different apps in Play Store then want to use Chrome for something) or some alternative app or mod to switch tasks that doesn't suffer this issue, especially replacing or modifying the action that happens when you hold down the home key?

There is a guide for changing the app launched by long pressing the home button here. If I find a replacement app that doesn't have this issue, I will post it.

AppSwipe! restores the app you called up "Complete action using" from instead of the app you chose to complete with, but there doesn't appear to be any way to bring the second app up, certainly with Play Store, it took me back to the Play Store when I selected it from the running apps list. So close, yet so far.

Can't see Google App in app switcher

Hi everyone !
Got a general question about the "Google App" aka "Google Now App" (and searching "google" in google isn't very helpful )
My question is : Is there a way to see the so called Google App in the app switcher ? Cause for now I can't make a search or show a news, switch to another app or minimize the Google App, and come back to my page, and it is very annoying...
Do you mean app drawer?
