Evening. I had previous installed WeakSauce and SuperSU on my Verizon HTC One M8.
today, I applied S-off, and flashed ClockwordMod Recovery Unofficial.
I installed Root from inside CWM.
However, I still cannot apply host files in CWM. This suggests that I don't necessarily have full root, so perhaps I missed a vital step somewhere.
Little help? That's all i want is proper ad blocking. otherwise, this phone runs just fine with Nova Launcher
thanks,
I always throw my Awaway apk into system/app. Not sure if that actually does anything, but it seems to apply more often than not. I've always had issues with adaway sometimes not applying, so you are not alone.

Unfortunately, while booted into Android, the stock kernal prevents system partition write access. You'll need to disable it.
EDIT: I stand corrected.

MultiDev, if I am understanding, you mean just disable AdAway because it wont work yet until a custom kernel or kernel mod is installed?

download and flash this in recovery: http://download.chainfire.eu/345/SuperSU/
then open it so it can update (use recovery method when asked to update)
then run adaway

Thanks, it successfully applied after that. Apparently I missed step one in some previous instructions where it said to flash the SuperSU binary.
Last question. I assume at this point, I can uninstall WeakSauce since we have permanent proper root?
I gotta say, this was pretty easy in Linux Mint 16....

S-Off'd and rooted through flashable zip. Installed adaway as a system app, and it's running fine here. Nothing else changed or added.

All this because I missed the first line of the instructions...

Yeah, I was wrong about that. The system partition is writable after S-off.

I also have s-off, uninstalled weak sauce, then flashed through CWM supersu.zip for full root, reboot. Downloaded latest AdAway apk found here on xda forum. I then ran apk file from my download folder, hit install. Open AdAway, click on Download fiels and apply add blocking. Now it just gets stuck on Applying... with the circle going around and around for over 15 minutes straight now! Yes i gave root access when asked. Is this normal?
Nevermind. Closed app, then reopened and it did the download thing like normal. Now says successful and applied hosts sources: 4/4.
So i'm good to go now? Does this need reboot like prompted?

This is the one app causing me problems. Adfree works problem free, but AdAway likes to keep getting stuck on "Applying...". I've got it to succeed once or twice by force closing and re-trying, but it's not reliable. I'm S-off, CWM recovery, SuperSU, and the modded kernel with RW permissions. What gives? :?
EDIT: Even tried installing Adaway as system app, problem still persists...???
EDIT2: Finally got it working. Noticed in the OP in the xda thread that there is a modded version to fix problem. All good

I had to install the unsecure boot image in order for AdAway to work properly. Otherwise it just hangs on applying host files.
From what I understand, just because you're s-off still doesn't mean you have full write access. The stock kernel has the write protection modules built in.
Flashing the unsecure boot image fixed all issues I was having and I'm pretty sure if you're still having problems, flashing that will help
-HTC One m8-
I'm not disputing whether or not s-off provides full write access. But, I was able to install AdAway with full functionality without installing the unsecure stock kernel. It takes a while to download all the data and install it though (maybe 5 minutes or so?). Then, I rebooted and it's working very well. No more ads!

Assuming the phone is already unlocked?
Could not find a way... please help!
Assuming your boot loader was already unlocked, you can use abd to install a custom recovery and flash the latest superuser zip file. The SU zip is on here but I'm on my phone at the moment so you'll have to do a little searching.
That happens. Simply root your phone again using superuser.
Here is the page:
http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/
Follow the part after the how to unlock bootloader.
Thank you, but...
I did that, put again the super user app after flashing the recovery, but it doesn't seem to work.
The super user app is still there, but it doesn't give su permissions...
(for instance, in ROM MANAGER it can't get permissions and also in a terminal doing "su")
Okay are you sure your phone is rooted?
If your answer is yes, click the superuser app. Once in there, there should be a ROM Manager logo in apps. Click that and check your status. The status should be allowed. If not on the bottom left click the button with an android face and a grey line in the middle. That will allow the app. Visa versa if you want to deny. Now just to confirm, go back to your main superuser page. Swipe left to go into log and your recent entry should be allowed for rom manager.
Now heres a tip. Back up your current rom and everything you want. Play around with the settings and apps so you know in the future what "this, that" is. If you stuff up, it doesnt matter. You have a backup. Just restore that in recovery.
dosnt work :/
the allow option doesnt work. perhaps there should be a different su file for
this version...
You may try to uninstall super user and reinstall it again. I had similar issue. And it was fixed by doing so. But I am not sure if it works for you. Good luck, mate.

I am kinda in a pickle here. I was rooting my phone using this Chinese .exe application and it had a big check Mark on the screen so I unplugged my phone. Mistake. It turns out that it kinda rooted my phone. No root apps work because the super su app that it downloaded with root was not working. I opened it up and it said I had to update my su binaries or something so I hit continue and it had an error that it couldn't download. I then tried installing titanium backup to try and uninstall it but sense I need super su to give it root, I can't uninstall it because of the super su problem. I tried installing superuser and it didn't work. Now I'm stuck because I can't fully root my phone with other ways which I have no idea why and i can't uninstall the bad super su app because I need it to work for me to be able to do it. I tried flashing my rom again but this stupid error saying I had to have internet to update software kept me from doing that and I DID have full internet access. I am stuck. Why can't their be just some extreme data reset that REALLY resets your phone. My phone still works fine but I have cod and having this problem is killing me, I almost can't even use my phone. PLEASE HELP I REALLY NEED IT!!!!

If you cannot update binaries, that usually means SuperSU cannot access root.
With a root browser (you shouldn't need root to do this though) look in /system/etc/init.d. Look for 99SuperSUDaemon. Also in /system/xbin look for daemonsu and su. Tell me if any of those are missing.

For the life of me I can't figure out why I cannot achieve root thru normal means on lollipop. Currently this is what I have to do when flashing a new ROM (even this method isn't 100 percent successful every time) :
First I flash my rom
Then, if I want to use supersu to manage root, I would flash koush's superuser (that's right you aren't hallucinating, I said koush's superuser)
Then I boot the phone, get it all setup
Then i boot into recovery again and flash supersu
Then reboot
Now I have root.
If I wanted to use superuser I would just do the opposite of what I listed.
And like I said, even this doesn't always work
What the hell fire and brimstone is going on? This should not be so hard., right

You cant use anything other that SuperSU BETA 2.27 unless you're wanting to use a permissive kernel.

I tried checking if it was installed properly with Root Checker but it says it was not. I'm sorry if this is a very simple issue but I don't want to destroy my new phone and couldn't find anything about this on the forums. Thank you in advance.

Yes. You're not going to hurt anything by reinstalling. It took me a couple tries. Just make sure that you don't attempt to update the su bin when you install supersu. The update will fail, but the installed version will work.

I tried it a couple of more times and it worked, so I thank you for the information. I wasn't sure if there was some steps I needed to take before uninstalling it.
As for Sunshine, I'd like to ease into rooting and feel around a bit before I pull the trigger on purchasing it. I'm sure I'll find some ROMs I'd like to install, so I'll probably grab it soon.
You can't install ROMs without it right? I don't think you can get a recovery tool without being in S-off, although I'm not sure.
Also, as a follow up question, if I install a third party app, will anything bad happen if the device shuts off? I know Weaksauce is temporary so I'm not sure what would happen if the device shuts off while an app that requires root is installed.
Again, thank you for all the help.
Hmm, it seems the issue actually hasn't been solved. When I used Root Check, it said it was successfully rooted, but Root Checker said it was not. When I tried to run Titanium Backup, an error message appeared saying it could not acquire root privileges. Busybox also says it could not get permission from SuperSU, even though SuperSU asked me to grant permission for it and I said yes.
I'm really not sure what's going on.

I'm VZW M8 4.4.4, Sunshine fails but I am TempRooted with WS2. Pounding away since getting the phone I had ChainfireSU installed but it could not update binaries. I also installed BusyBox. I uninstalled both thinking they were screwing up SS. It appears I still have the SS SU Helper APK installed. RootChecker shows me rooted with SU in /system/xbin/su and BusyBox installed in /system/xbin/busybox. Either WS2 or SS 2.8.4 re-roots me at each boot. I think WS is included in SS and will give TempRoot too. I do have redo any changes I've made such as renaming the HTC update files as they get replaced by HTC. Things like TiBU and ES File Explorer root requiring options work. Things like Xposed don't.
Don't know how I got here as I tried all sorts of combos until it sunk in that SS 2.8.4 just was not going to work on my phone.
I read that Exposed Installer has been updated. Does anyone know if it would work with the 5.1.1 Update that Tmo and Metro Stylo got?
Only way to find out is to try. I'll be backing up and trying in a bit.
well it said it installed in twrp, but when i rebooted, it stayed on the lg screen for longer than usual...then it finally went to the metro screen but it just stayed there for a long time so i panicked and pulled the battery.
i was able to restore my backup and i thought i read somewhere that i may need busybox installed...even though i thought busybox got installed when i did the one click root, i went ahead and installed it from the playstore to try again.
again it said it installed in twrp, this time i let it stay on the metro screen even longer but it seemed like it was stuck so i restored a backup...do you think i just need to wait longer? also do i really need busybox installed?
im tempted to restore my 5.02 backup and see what happens if i try to install the 5.0 version...

found these instructions in Italian on how to install without recovery pasting them in English (rough google translation):
ith this tutorial we see how to install Xposed Framework on a phone with Android
Lollipop without recovery!
Cost:
Root
Busybox installed on the device (and also installed files busybox, just open the app)
Terminal Emulator installed on the device
Package XposedLollipop taken from this video.
1- Download the package by pressing the link
2- Unzip
3- Put the contents of the root (in the main memory of the phone,
no subfolders) of the device.
4- Install Xposed (the apk is among the file you just put into the device) BUT do not open it
5- Open the terminal emulator and type "su" after which you type: sh / sdcard / installer
and press enter.
6- 1 and press enter.
7- Wait for the procedure, after restart and you Xposed properly installed
PS: procedure performed perfectly on MEIZU MX4 which as you know does not have recovery mod, works on all phones MA may be different from the path where installed so placed in the root of the file and make sure that it's called "sdcard", should have a other name you have to use that! eg sh / card / installer
link to the video with his links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDInZYNrEr8 if this does work then us Boost User's can enjoy it too , but i have no idea if it does work
and if it doesnt work? i wouldnt try anything fancy without having twrp to restore a backup (or at least a kdz)...are you gonna try that method?
