I downgraded to a Droid Razr Maxx, for the time being. It looks like these phones can be easily opened and screens replaced. I had planned to use the cash for my car, but it can wait as my phone cannot.

I effed up the earphones speaker getting it out, so I also bought that, and you must have a t4 for the screw next to the rear camera. It's TINY! Motorola didn't skimp on the thread lock for the screws, so make sure you're pressing down firmly while turning so they don't slip out and strip the screws fitting. The bottom part of the faceplate total assembly will be loose, but it shouldn't be played with. I found out my frame was broken in a thin spot, and I was happy about that strangely enough. Kind of made getting the whole glass assembly worth it.

Ok, I really want to pick up a RAZR MAXX HD. I have never had a phone this big, though, and can honestly say I prefer smaller phones. I'm coming from Virgin Mobile USA to Verizon because Hurricane Sandy came in and wiped out my cell service at home. Verizon still works fine here, though. Anyways here are my past phones so you can get an idea of what I'm used to:
Optimus V - stock, unrooted
Moto Triumph - stock, rooted
HTC One V - CM10, sickkernel 1.4 gHz (current device)
The RAZR M was a big draw to me because it is almost the exact same size as my One V. However that b**tch Sandy also left me with the sour taste of battery life in my mouth and the RAZR MAXX HD was my initial thought.
So to the point of this thread...
The Triumph was kind of big for my pocket, and the Optimus V was kind of thick for my pocket. I usually carry my phone in my front pants pocket. (I think this is fairly common).
I'm thinking that the RAZR HD will be huge and annoying to carry in my pocket like that so I would like to know how people on XDA carry their's. (belt holster, front pocket, fanny pack, etc.)
I appreciate your input, thanks in advance...
Dude. Just wear it proudly anywhere you like. Before I had Droid X and kept it in front pocket over 2 years with no issues at all. Now I carry Maxx HD inside the belt holster (only because didn't buy tpu cover for it, besides Kevlar should protect it well without it). I have dropped it already on the tiles from about 6 feet...so far so good. My Droid X has been dropped at several occasions and survived without any major scratches to this day. I don't know whether I was just that lucky or Moto made it so sturdy. Bottom line your new phone should fit anywhere you like, and it is only up to you where do you wanna carry it. Ask vz if they let you "test walk" the phone in the store before you buy it and find the most convenient place for it. Good luck.

Its on the larger size but I have absolutely no problem carrying it in my front pants pocket... it is so skinny that it makes up for the width in my opinion. Can you go to a store and play with one to get the feel?

I already went to the verizon store to check it out. They have a big fat anti-theft lock on the thing in the store so you can't get a great idea of what the phone actually feels like. I mean, you get an idea of it, but not an especially good one. Anyways, they're usually pretty hesitant about taking stuff out of sealed boxes, especially to let people put it in their pockets and b/c of the hurricane here the store has been really crowded and I haven't bothered waiting for a worker there to ask about feeling a naked phone.
The question was asked just to get others' input on how they carry their phones, just to see if maybe someone out there has a unique idea that works really well for this larger phone. So other prospective buyers can get some ideas as well as myself. I already ordered the phone, I'm just looking for suggestions for when it gets here and an idea if it is awkward or annoying to carry in ur front pants pocket.
Personally I will NEVER wear a belt holster, though. No offense to anyone...
I appreciate ur guys' input, ::: presses thanks button::::
I just put it in my front pants pocket, with nothing else in the pocket and the back of the phone against my leg, I find for me that keeps the screen looking flawless. Never had any issue with it being too big, if you do, you will get used to it pretty fast

I have a case and screen protector on it and it still fits fine in my front right pocket. It's really not too big

Cut a piece of cardboard the same size as the phone, put it in your pocket. It's only marginally thicker than that. I keep my Razr HD in my front pocket, and the maxx is only a couple mm thicker (or ~3/32" for metric-phobes). It's big, yeah, but nicer for web/email than my older Defy, which is nearly 2x as thick.
Idk how thick a gauge of cardboard you're used to but, like i said I've picked this phone up in the store (btw I'm talking about the Maxx) and its way thicker than a piece of cardboard. Based on regular shipping/storage box corrugated cardboard i'd say its at least twice as thick. Yes, the regular Razr HD is thinner but still a bit thicker than a piece of cardboard IMO.
Anyways, thanks to all for your input...
The point of this thread is really just to share how you carry your phone so potential buyers can get an idea of what its like to carry the phone around. Like a share your home screen thread... I'm not looking for the BEST way to carry the phone, or any phone for that matter. Just looking for people to share their opinions.
RMaxxHD, with case, fits just fine in the front pants pocket. Nothing else in the pocket (more to protect the screen from scratches than anything else - I've had folded papers in there with the phone). Or in a "knee" cargo pants pocket. If you can't fit it into your front pocket, you need to go trade in your girlish skinny jeans for a regular pair of men's.
After carry around a Thunderbolt with a Seidio case for 20 months the Maxx HD feels tiny to me. When I pulled out from it's box last night I was really struck by how light and thin it is. I will be grabbing a Seidio Active case for it too as soon as they are available.
I would like to do some modifications to the razr hd has anyone seen a teardown video or write up?

I know they are both identical phones inside but they are completely different on the outside. I believe the back cover only covers a portion of the back on the regular HD where it completely covers the back on the MAXX HD. The camera portion will have to be completely remounted in order to be able to use the MAXX HD back cover. The Amoled screen on the MAXX HD has a border around it where the regular HD does not.
I'm going off of memory of when I bought the the phone and I was checking them both out. Assuming I am remembering correctly, it would make sense for Moto to not make it easy to achieve what you are looking for. They want you to spend the extra $$$.

uh, you are thinking of the razr, not razr hd. Only difference between razr hd and razr maxx hd is 2mm extra thickness on the latter, which means a different rear cover, to account for the larger battery. That, and increased storage.
Difference view-able here: http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/22/3535122/motorola-droid-razr-hd-razr-maxx-hd-review-images#3885063

I'm in the U.S. but im on at&t so I had to import a Razr HD from roger's canada. Verison is the only carrier in the world who offers the maxx hd.
Anyway im sure it will be helpful to verizon users down the road too who feel like upgrading or wish they had gotten the maxx. Has knowone taken it apart or seen a teardown?
I'm thinking of doing the same. I have the xt925 and really want to get a maxx battery and maybe switch out the screen with the white one.

Awe bummer, not too far though. I live 3 blocks south of Windansea. My Razr HD should be here on monday or tues first mod I plan on doing is swapping a VZW MAXX HD Backplate & Battery into it.
Really wish I could find a Teardown or Fix-it manual ANyone??
I tore down my Razr Maxx HD the other day to add a metal disc between the back cover and battery for my magnetic car mount. It is pretty easy to take apart and put back together as long as you figure out the trick to the speaker wire connection.
Remove bottom 2 screws and press screen upwards. The screen will seperate like the old battery cover of the original Droid. Disconnect the 2 ribbon cables that connect from the screen to the main board by pulling straight back on the ribbon cables. Remove all the screws on the main board that attach it to the back cover. Remove the battery connection cable by pulling up on connector. Remove one other ribbon cable connection on upper right side of board by pulling straight back. At the upper left of the board is black plastic with clear plastic in the middle. Underneath the clear plastic is the speaker connection. Use an exacto knife to remove the adhesive clear plastic. The speaker connection pulls straight up. Now the board will come out. Tada. Reassembly is the reverse. Be careful of the audio line out plastic bezel which will fall out when you remove the board. It is easy to lose or forget to put back in on reassembly.

Darn so you basically have to take everything apart just to switch out the back kevlar piece? Was hoping I could just unscrew the 2 bottom screws and back would pop off like a iphone but maybe with a little adhesive tape to pry.
Makes sense, it is said to have an irremovable back cover. I guess that's because all the phone hardware is attached TO the back cover. Basically it means a full teardown and rebuild to upgrade a razrhd to maxx if the rear casing and battery become available in the future.
Yes, everything attaches to the back cover. I was thinking the back cover would be the removable piece too. I found out how it was put together by accident. I took out the bottom screws and kept messing with the back cover thinking it snapped over. Then I noticed the screen moved up causing a slight gap at the seam at the top of the phone. After figuring that out, the rest was pretty simple. The external speaker is built into the back cover, though.
Hello, well I drop my infuse last week and crack just the glass. A guy I know that works at a cell phone repair store sold me a $10 glass for my phone. Well I've started reading and they say that the glass and LCD are fuse together. Is there away to just repair the glass. I thought maybe taking my hot knife and carefully cutting just around the edge and then take a long thin boxcutter ( I've got one as long as the phone and it really thin) and heating up the blade and very carefully slide down while my girlfriend runs a hair blower up and down the screen.
I thought I take the blade and my hot gluegun and make some grips on the sides of the razor blade so I don't cut my hand. What do you guys think of this.
If you know of someone that has done it and can give me there names so I can PM them that be great. One thing thought I don't wont to mess the phone up. This is all I have until the SG4 comes out in the states. Which should be in a few days but I've got to wait until after the 3rd to be able to pay for it. Thanks for reading this.
By the way, could they do it at a cellphone store or would they also need to buy the LCD digitizer to fix it.
Google is your friend in this matter. There are several good sites and YouTube videos related to replacing a screen readily available online. Best of luck in replacing it

If you just cracked the glass and see no bleeding from the LCD you can just replace the glass but its a pain in the ass separating it from the LCD without cracking it. My suggestion is to use a really hot blow dryer or a heat gun preferably..separate them, then you'll have to re-adhere the new glass to the LCD. If you have super glue you can use it but use very very little or you'll ruin the screen. I would recommend buying an infuse specific glass replacement adhesive sticker thing on eBay. They're less than 5 bucks  if you need any help feel free to pm me.

What about using a real thin guitar string. You think that might be better to use since the string will give a little and with the razor it might nic the LCD. What do you guys think.

Dropped my Razr hd over the weekend and cracked the glass. It still works 100% but is annoyingly broken. Has anyone replaced just the glass on one of these? I saw a youtube of the glass removal and its pretty hairy. The LCD/glass combo is over $100 on ebay so I'm not sure what to do. I have insurance through Vzn but they'll send me a replacement with a locked bootloader. Unsure what to do. Any suggestions?
Not sure what the deductible is up to now thru Verizon insurance, but I'm pretty sure it's over $120.
I would buy the LCD/digitizer assembly and replace it myself and keep the unlocked bootloader.
I guess im more interested in just replacing the glass, not the whole LCD. I am eligible for a discounted upgrade and can get the motox for less than the LCD costs. Id like to wait a bit and see the s5 before going that route so im lookig to just get by until then. Anyone just done the glass replacement?
I've changed just the glass myself. And it works perfect. There is a video on utube That just shows the glass getting replaced. Good luck and be careful not to damage the lcd
Alright, well ive ordered a glass screen off ebay, and im going to give it a shot. If i screw it up, ill just get a new phone i guess.
Post pics and keep up updated, please! And, good luck.

I know its to late, but for anyone else out there I myself broke the screen. And I got a new phone through insurance, now instead of sending in the old phone I simply swapped the screens. This would allow you to keep your unlocked device without buying an expensive replacement screen outright.

Well i did it. Not for the faint of heart ill tell you that. It took me about 2.5 hours to get the glass off and i probably should have taken even more time. I dont know if i got it too hot or what but i have a dime sized area that has a yellowish tint. I also have two smallish places that i accidentally scratched up some of the darkening film on top of the lcd. Plus I scratched the hell out of a majority of the lcd. Everything works though, no bad touch areas or dead areas. Id say its marginally better than having the cracked glass.
Good luck if youre going to try this.
well order a htc one, was selling my razr hd xt925 but the glass broken.... digitizer and lcd are ok
anyone in europe that only change the glass??
last time i buy a razr, im not the best person taking care of mobile phone, but this happens in the razr maxx too....

Hello all,
I bought a (verified good ESN) Droid Ultra from Craigslist, for... get this... $15, which supposedly had "water damage". Well, in the process of successfully reviving it, I noticed handwriting inside of the back cover, in silver or white pen, which said "2 of 14", and since other scribbles, resembling initials. Had anyone else had their Ultra cracked open, and noticed this, or is mine "special"? The back covers are surprisingly easy to remove (I just ran my thumbnail around the seam), and there doesn't seem to be any tamper tape anywhere on this thing, although removing the back cover is all the further I got. The water intrusion sticker, which is on the upper right, inside, wasn't bright pink, but didn't have any distinct x's on it, either.
Probably isn't anything, but I had to ask.
Take Care,
Deezl
