Nexus 5 camera and GPS - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i wanted to know why my nexus 5 camera didnt add geotagging to my pictures when i had the phone set to GPS only and not the battery saver or high accuracy modes. i had looked at old locations on my pictures when taken with those modes on and didnt get very accurate results when triangulation or whatever else they use to calculate your position using cell towers.. another reason im asking is because i will not likely be around any cell towers when i need the location of where i have been taking pictures.. anyone know what ive missed here?

anyone have any idea on this? i did some testing and set my location mode to battery saving and high accuracy while i put the phone in airplane mode and when i take a picture it wont attach the GPS data to the photos even though it shows GPS is still on..

Tracks from Captivate Compared To Other Devices

Using JH3 with SuperRooter and lagfix.
Did play with LBSTestMode and change settings, but those settings did not change "jupiter.xml" which I believe is where the GPS stores its settings, since that is where we turn off the GPS Log File.
Even with decent locking, tracking doesn't follow very well. Attached images show the differences between the Captivate (Yellow Pins) and Treo Pro (White/Black Squares).
Will try a few things that I've seen and post up some more results after I drive to work in the morning.
Does anyone know name of a good NMEA logging app, to log the NMEA statements directly.
Attached images are snippings from google earth, showing tracks...
Only changes made is used Epic 4Gs jupiter.xml file from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759641
I did see some improvements in tracking, previously all recorded turns or even lane changes resulted in an overshot track by over 100 ft, that took 10+ seconds to return to active track. These are from today's test with above changes, I drive 45 minutes to work, interstate, US Hwy, and city streets so its a decent test.
(EDIT) Red is Treo Pro recording NMEA with VisualGPSce / Blue is Captivate running GPS Logger from market (/EDIT)
Cap 1 is the only truly overshot at speed turn, at about 40 MPH, but the previous turn was perfect (in the same image)
Cap 2, only appeared on interstate @ 70 mph (on there 11 miles), had about 3-4 lil bumps like this that went off track by about 100-150 ft and returned, seems to last about 6 seconds but could be enough to throw navigation program off track
Cap 3, examples of improvements
Cap 4, examples of improvements
Joe, what's the red and what's the blue tracks? That way we can compare properly

Edited post, that kind of slipped my mind since I knew the colors, but others need to know too DUH...
If anyone wants to know I used gpsvisualizer.com to convert the NMEA and GPX file to a track/waypoint based KML. I know I could get KML from GPS Logger, but I wanted to files with same format
Good research...
For comparison purposes do you also have a tracks of the PRE-Fix??? Like to see how much the GPS actually fixes it, that's not a placebo effect?

I didn't save any tracks before laying around in the 1472365 (LBSTestMode), but I believe any changes made in test mode are only a placebo affect. The first post is before changing jupiter.xml. I'm playing on the angle that that menu/program is exactly what it says, a "Location Based Services Test Mode" for testing different settings. Changes made there are saved in system.db but not in jupiter.xml
From the fact that you have to edit jupiter.xml to disable GPS logging in JH2/JH3 means that settings are definatly being pulled from that file.
I'm actually going to change the SUPL settings in jupiter.xml to the google ones and see what happens.
The first set of images is pre-fix and the second is post-fix?

Yes but last night record some more data and it was back to the tracks over shooting turns and accuracy being off by up to 100 feet so not sure what's up with this thing.
Can see all the satellites with decent signal, so I doubt its a hardware issue but more likely firmware or drivers depending on where the calculations are done.
I know the devs over in the kaiser and vogue forums did work to improver gps accuracy in the kernel.. It may just end up being a wait and see since we don't have source for the samsung kernel

GPS and Ingress

Has anyone else had any issues with GPS and/or Ingress?
Here's the problem. While playing Ingress and being tethered to my phone, the GPS usually cannot get a lock on ANY satelites. I mean absolutely 0. Occasionally I'll end up moving but we're talking hundreds of meter jumps, usually taking anywhere from 20 seconds to sometimes up to 5 minutes for 1 to occur (in the 5 minutes one, I was nearly 2 miles away from where it last jumped.....).
Now, you'd think there was something wrong with my GPS, right?
Well, how come I can go and open my Google Maps application, and within 15 seconds have a lock on 5 to 8 satelites and have correct placement as well?
I've tried this a number of times, where Ingress essentially has me no where near where I should be. I exit out of Ingress and go to Google Maps and nearly immediately it shows my current location exactly without issues.
I've tried nearly everything I can think of to get this fixed. Overclocking/underclocking and such make no real difference here (hoping that maybe there wasn't enough processor speed or the graphics were too intense), has little to no effect as one would hope. Even using a few GPS tools (such as GPSFix, GPS Status and Toolbox, etc...) provide little insight into the problem, as they just confirm my fears, that inside Ingress I get 0 satelites, inside any other GPS application I'll get a lock on 5 to 8 satelites in no time.
Does anyone know of a way that I can truely monitor the GPS while using another application? I'd like some kind of log or something to help figure this out.

Hello friend. It has been almost a year since you have posted, but I've gone through the same hardships, on different device though.
See my post here, if you still need some solution and see if it helps.

[Q] Battery behaviour when recording position via GPS

Hi guys, maybe you could help me out. I was thinking whether I could use this phone when riding a bike (on normal terrain, 90% roads) to track my position (via MyTracks, Strava etc.). Does anyone know how the battery behaves (I would like to see the map on the phone all the time) in such a regime? Or, could you make a test for me? No WiFi, data or anything, just GPS and position recording.
Thanks a lot!
Just gonna give my two cents here.
I think you can theoretically and I'm saying just that because you can test GPS from the service tests. But from exp it is significantly slower to get GPS coordinates than with data or WiFi. Now regarding battery if you have the location service on or at high accuracy it will drain the battery more than with the service off or limited to a number of apps.
Thanks for the tips. However, I would like to hear real life experiences before I decide whether to buy it or not because I am unable to test it.
I have always gps on. When I charged battery to 100%. Lock phone and go sleep after 9 hours still 100%. Only gps taking very very very less battery. You shouldn'd see different between turn on and turn off gps.

Thanks a lot, but could you repeat the test during the day? Turn google maps e.g. on (even better mytracks + recording) and just go around normally. I had an idea to keep the screen on all the time so that I can see the map whenever I want - if by any chance you could do that as well, well... buy you a beer if the road ever takes you close by .

GPS lock

I'm having an issue where it takes fund minutes to lock location on the phone. The problem is most noticeable on Waze. I turn Waze on every time I get in the car (the speed traps alone are worth it), and sometimes it's half my trip before it locks on.
The location is set to high accuracy, and it does eventually lock on. My 6p would lock on in one second.
Anyone else? Thanks

I've seen issues in Waze as well, with both GPS lock and the Compas going screwy...
Have you guys tried running gps status or gps toolbox?
What settings do you have selected in location settings?
On my v10 if I enable the additional low power Qualcomm IZat location estimation option, gps runs all screwy.
Id like to know if gps is hit or miss, as its another of the main features I need and use on a daily basis, along with Ok Google..
My Pixel is now locking GPS in a few seconds after I open Waze. Probably even faster than my 6P.
For anyone else having these problems, here are all the steps I did (not sure which if any of these actually solved the problem)
1. Uninstalled Waze. Turned off Location. Rebooted into Safe Mode (Long Press "Power Off")
2. Once in Safe Mode, turn location back on, open Google Maps outside, let GPS lock (that time still took a while) and use navigation for a while
3. Rebooted the phone again into safe mode. reopened Google Maps and let GPS lock on
4. Rebooted the phone normally, open Goolge Maps first to make sure GPS was working. Then installed Waze
It's been working pretty well for the past few days.
I'm still seeing issues with the compass, I get a GPS lock quickly, but it always shows I'm pointing 100-160 degrees off from my actual heading. Tried using GPS status to calibrate, it now says I'm calibrated, but I still see the issue, even in GPS Status. The compass points in one direction, then once I start moving, the GPS corrects the heading to my actual direction...
I've never had this issue with any other phone, very frustrating.

Auto Gps when take photo?

Hi, is there a way to force the gps to activate when i take a photo? Normally I turn off the gps when I'm not using it (maps) for save battery but that means that all my photo are now without geotag. My previuos phone (honor8) despite if I disable gps, as soon I start the camera app, it turns my gps on to geotag the photo and this is very useful. Is there a way to force the gps to turn on?
Turn Location services permanently. GPS on new phones is efficient enough, so battery drain is minimal. There are way better ways to save battery than this.
