Nice

Very helpful, thanks for taking time to make these. Just so I'm 100%, the order for a new out of the box phone would be following the instructions in the first video (perm root and cwm) followed by the instructions in the 3rd (S-Off via FireWater)? Thanks again.

Actually you would want to Temp Root via WeakSauce, Then S-Off with Firewater, then install recovery and permanent root.

Actually, with the Dev Ed, the boot loader already is unlocked. So, no need to unlock something that already is unlocked! Lol! Just flash a recovery and then root.

So what's the right sequence of steps here. Utimately I am looking to have rooted, unlocked bootloader, and custom recovery. Is it like this?
S-Off
Unlock Bootloader
Root
Custom Recovery
or what's the right order? Thanks in advance!

I assume once you root, you can do the flashing with flashify?
Also, anyone know if this all works with the new update that went out?

[Q] Some Questions about rooting Desire S

Hi,
I´ve been reading through the forum for the past days, but still a lil bit confused about the procedure. Some threads say no you must do it like this, the other thread says under no circumstances do it like the way in the other thread....
Desire S:

SAGA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0002
Radio 3822.10.08.04_M
Android 2.3.5
SoftwareNr. 2.10.401.8
As far as i understand, first i have to use HTCDev to unlock the bootloader. Then downgradehboot to 98
Next get s-off via Revolutionary and Use SuperOneClick to root?
Final follow instructions to install a custom rom klick ?
Forget something? Or is their any easier way?
Sry for my bad english .
Thanks in advance.
I don't know your hboot, for me it was not necessary to downgrade.
But so far you're plan sounds good just backup everything before flashing a new ROM

If I root my DS, using this guide, i'll be able to install ALL custom ROMs?
I unlocked Bootloader via HTCDev, flashed 4EXTRecovery, flashed SuperUser via recovery. When i tried to flash Virtuous Unity, device stucked at HTC logo.
If I use that guide, will i be able to flash custom ROM?
@3st
You don't need to use HTCdev to downgrade.
By using HTCdev you are possible screwing your warranty.
So to simplify,
Option 1) Use HTCdev to unlock, then install custom recovery, then either root or install a rom using recovery.
Option 2) Downgrade, then use Revolutionary to s-off and install a custom recovery, then as above either root or flash rom with recovery.

when you unlock via htcdev you need to flash the boot.img separately when flashing a custom ROM.

Okay, i'll try this.
Thx for the answer
There are couple threads in the General section explaing how to downgrade hboot without unlocking at htcdev.com
You should try them first.

dmatik, already unlocked, but thanks.I'll watch them

Yep
But you need to flash the boot.img of the new ROM, not the old one you already flashed before. (sounds logically, but some ppl. seem to be not able to think logically...)
Please gimme a thumb up if I helped ;-P

[Q] Need Help - Xe (ICS) bootloader says S-OFF but superuser says not rooted

Hi
I have a sensation xe. I rooted it before upgrading it to ICS (before is GB).
I upgraded it by flashing official ics rom due to I previously installed clockworkmod recovery which stop me from normal way of upgrade.
After upgrade everything's fine, but superuser and clockworkmod gone.
When I install superuser it says binary not found. but I checked my bootloader it says S-OFF.
What should I do?
Android - 4.0.3
Software number - 3.32.401.105
Hboot - 1.27.0000
Radio - 11.22.3504.07_M
Nevermind.

I don't know what is that, I think not.
I flashed it using RUU_PYRAMID_LE_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_3.32.401.105_R_Radio_11.69.3504.00U_11.22.3504.07_M_release_251961_signed.exe
If you find it locked you have to unlock first with htcdev.com but many user won't recommend it but at this time I think it the only way to unlock the bootloader, install the custom recovery(CWM) and install the superuser(root the phone).
You can get the details on this post.
But I already have it rooted before upgrade. I thought it will remain rooted? coz my bootloader shown S-OFF
OK, you have S-off. I guess you should be able to flash Revolutionary firmware from Boot loader, then use fast boot to flash the recovery, then flash root from the recovery you installed earlier and voila.
Sent from my Sensation using Tapatalk 2 Beta-6
Or, flash a firmware that contains recovery and then flash super user (just make sure its the correct firmware.) (I don't remember exactly where I seen this firmware, but I'm sure I have. Maybe here or somewhere else)

If you are S-Off you can root it again (because you flashed a RUU you lost root)
1) need to have a custom recovery (CWN or 4EXT). There is a nice tool to instal 4ext recovery HERE or download this PG58IMG. Just put it in your sd card and flash it from bootloader.
2) Then Download and install from custom recovery the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip
Done!

They don't recommend it because it doesn't unlock the bootloader completely. Read more and please don't recommend it, it's incorrect. His bootloader is already unlocked, hence he is s off. As already mentioned he needs to root and install Recovery.

Correct. By revolutionary you install CWM and then you can switch to 4ext. same as I did but in his case he doesn't need to use Revolutionary because already unlocked and s-Offed (and also because Revolutionary doesn't support Hboot 1.27). He needs just to install a custom recovery by a PG58IMG and superuser to get root again.
If the. Hboot is the issue why not just get an older one, put it in a zip called pjwhatever.zip (not sure I own a wildfire) and then just put into bootloader and flash it. He has s-off like.??

Hboot has nothing to do. The OP wants just root the phone again after upgrade to ICS.
Also, I think we are hitchhiking the thread with OT postings.
That said, this is my last post here.
For the OP: Follow instructions few posts above and good luck

Try unlocking through HTCdev.
Unlock using HTCdev, flash CWM, flash superuser.zip. Done, you're rooted.

This is very true. There's a couple stickys in the dev section about this. Blue has a huge guide on how to do this, there's even a tool that'll do it all. Try using Hassons Toolkit. Simple as hell, best tool for any HTC phone.

I also suggest gaining S-off. It'll eliminate a couple steps when flashing new ROMs.

I haven't seen anything specific to 1.94, but you could always unlock your bootloader through HTCDev and flash a custom recovery with ADB and flash the SU binary. I think you may be out of luck if you want a root option that doesn't involve unlocking the bootloader.
ericth18 said:
That's right, there no method to root on 1.94 at this moment. Only way I got my HOX rooted was by unlocking the bootloader using HTCDEV and flashing TWRP recovery and then flashing Cleanrom 4.5 which gave me root access. There might be a few other roms out there that will give you root after you flash them but I've tried a few and Cleanrom 4.5 was the only one that gave me root. It's a great rom so I'm happy with that.

With custom recovery/unlockedBL you just flash or push root right from recovery.

TWRP doesn't load (stuck at htc screen)

Hi there,
just got a One X and wanted to install a custom Rom. Did bootloader unlock and installed TWRP with Toolkit. As I'm on Windows 8 I couldn't do the root part, if I'm not mistaken this is not needed and the custom ROM will be rooted anyway..? So TWRP installed successfully and I cleaned Cache but it doesn't start when i select recovery in HBOOT it stucks at the green HTC logo.. Is there any advice? Thanks in advance..
Edit: also just noticed that you did not root. You really need to do that before trying to install a ROM. I know you unlocked the boot loader but rooting is still needed to access system files. With out that, it is pointless. Find a Linux or windows 7 mention.
Better yet just run a live USB within Linux. That should work. Ooh, I wonder can you boot using your phone since it can be considered a mass storage device....probably not. Sorry off topic.
My guess is that windows 8 probably isn't reading your phone correctly. But you said you unlocked the boot loader. Try to manually install twrp

Just download the latest HTC sync from HTC website and it Will install drivers you need, you can then leave sync or uninstall it and drivers will remain.

How are you going to access twrp if you do not have root and super user?
Good luck with that.

If the bootloader is unlocked, there's no need to root. They are independent of each other.
Check md5 on your recovery file and reflash. Then do fastboot erase cache and try going to recovery.
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
I thought unlocking the BL and root was co-dependant. You can root but can't install ROMs until the BL is unlocked. Or you could unlock boot loader but can't touch system files until you gain root access.
Or did I miss understand? Which is why rooting alone nor unlocking the BL alone is not the only step in installing a ROM.

I will explain further.
For ATT One XL root was needed prior to unlocking the bootloader to allow you to write to system files(which is no longer possible as of 3.18), and be able to change the CID in order to allow HTCDEV to provide the Unlock_code.bin to unlock your bootloader. This is probably where your confusion stems.
IF, like every other carrier, ATT allowed you to unlock the bootloader, you would not need to have rooted to be able to unlock your bootloader, you could have just unlocked it and then flashed TWRP. At that point you could flash a rooted rom or allow TWRP to root your rom for you. (For some rom versions, I believe anything under 3.18)
Hope this cleared some stuff up for you! :good:
Ah makes perfect since now. Darn AT&T and their lock downs.
So basically Rogers and Telstra can root just by unlocking and that's it. No exploit needed. And of course flashing twrp and a rom
