Not sure if it's the device or kitkat 4.4.2 sepifically? I've been using Vaulty in the past on previous device on android 4.2 and worked fine. I have private photos saved on my external sd card but want them hidden on my device. The stock gallery photo app shows everything, trying to avoid this. I know in the gallery app you can choose to not show certain folders but anyone can toggle this feature.
Basically want to hide the pictures i have on my sd card. I installed Vaulty which does not hide anything on this device. I found an app Gallery Lock lite which does but as soon as i reboot my device the "hidden" pictures are again visible in the stock gallery photo app. Any ideas on this? I have the private photos now saved in the Gallery Lock lite app so maybe now just delete them off my SD card and they won't show on stock gallery photo app?
Then if i take private photos with the phone's camera i hide them with this app and if photo is still in gallery just delete and the app will still have a copy saved inside? Seems confusing on this thing when it was so simple on my previous device, HTC One X+.
Should be able to create a .nomedia file and put it in the directory where the pictures are. This will make the phone ignore that directory when scanning for media.

You could also simply edit the file name to some random file extension using es file explorer.. rename them all to .txt files.

5 best android apps to hide photos and videos
You can use apps to hide photos and video. And this's 5 best android apps to hide photos and videos
1. Hide Pictures Keep Safe Vault - is one of the best apps to lock away your personal pictures and videos with ease. The app makes it effortless to simply store away your videos and photos in a safe vault. The separate gallery is kept hidden from the regular ones. I have used the basic version of the app for a while and it worked perfectly.
2. Gallery Lock (Hide pictures) - is one of the most popular apps around for Android. Almost every friend of mine recommends this free app for daily usage. I was pleasantly suspired to see the robust feature list of this app. Gallery Lock comes with almost every feature you would want from an app that hides photos and videos for you.
3. Hide Something - Photo, Video - With Hide-Something, your public gallery remains available to your friends, family, and coworkers. And your hidden images are only for who can unlock. With Hide-Something, you can customize your gallery when you want to show different photos to different people. With Hide-Something, you can share your photos and videos easily, even hand over your cell phone to others and no worry about your privacy.
4. Gallery Vault - Hide Video&Photo - comes with a simple and understandable interface and a good design. You simply need to move the images to the GalleryVault and they will be kept safe behind a lock code. The app also has the option of making the launch icon hidden; virtually making it completely concealed from your device.
5. Hide Pictures & Videos - FotoX - allows you to store your private pictures and photos in a secret gallery. If you want, you can take a picture directly from the app itself and it will be stored instantly. It is a great way to avoid the extra work of manually selecting pictures and hiding them in a secret vault.

sometimes you will come across this huge file called 'thumbdata' in the dcim folder on your sdcard0 which occupies like 1.5gb and sometimes even worse, 2gb+. to put an end to this retarded thing, i've followed this method and it works perfectly..
your phone needs to be rooted and rom toolbox must be installed..
step1- from the appmanager option in the rom toolbox app, backup the following system apps - album, photo editor, photos and videos.
step2- again from the appmanager option in the rom toolbox app, uninstall the system apps - album, photo editor, photos and videos.
step3- from the google playstore dload the 'quickpic' app
(actually the quickpic app acts as the replacement for your album app which produces the huge thumbdata file and the 'photo editor, photos and videos' apps are the sub apps of the album app)
now you can view all the pictures you've taken in the quickpic app and its actually quite better than the stock album app with many options to explore.
if you dont like this app and revert to the initial stage, you can choose 'restore' option for the 3 apps that you've backed up from the appmanager in romtolbox app and also dont forget to choose 'convert to system app' option after restoring the 3 stock apps.
After I take a photo (stock camera app) it makes a little thumbnail in the corner. When you click that or if you scroll with your finger it is opening up Photos, instead of the Gallery. I can manually open all 3 of the apps. My Nexus 5 used to default open Gallery, is their a way to change this, or is this the new default? Photos doesn't give me as many things to edit my photos with.
What if you disable automatic photo upload in Google Plus settings?
This is the new default, i expect "gallery" will soon get removed, its a part of google's policy, they are getting far from AOSP and more into google services.
That's good to know. I do have automatic picture upload turned on in google plus. I tried turning that off, but it was still Photos instead of the Gallery. I'm glad I didn't screw something up
Just released this app to the market yesterday (as a paid app) but I figured I'd also make a XDA thread to give it out for free, but instead of doing it in the general section, I decided to give my fellow Moto X users the treat. Screenshots & video are at the market listing ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.milone.fakedel ) but I’ve also copied the description below.
Keep your private photos hidden without anyone even knowing they are there, with the most discreet photo security app on the Play Store.
How it works:
Its purpose is to mimic the action of deleting an image from your device, but instead of deleting it, it just moves it to a hidden folder that the Gallery app does not detect.
Key Features:
•Remove images from your gallery, but move them to a hidden folder
•Utilize your own native or 3rd party gallery app to select images
•Completely customize the Discreet Delete dialog to match your UI, including actions to occur after dismissing the dialog
•View Hidden Photos with ease, share or open them in other apps just like the normal Gallery
• Two easy launch modes, create a shortcut or turn on a notification that appears whenever a new photo is taken with your camera. Both with customizable labels and both load straight into your installed gallery app to select an image to fake delete
Hide your photos in plain sight without anyone even knowing that you have anything to hide.
You'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
App Info & Permissions:
Android 2.2 and up (API 8)
android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: move and delete images
android.permission.CAMERA: to detect when a new photo is taken
android.permission.INSTALL_SHORTCUT: create direct icon that launches the image selector
Let me know what you think.
Thanks. Pretty cool of you.

Works great thanks.
Is there any way to make this work with videos?
So I have mostly moved away from EMUI, as much as I can anyway, got way to used to Moto/Nokia devices with pure Android... Using Nova Launcher Prime, Google Photo, Google Calendar, Google Calculator, etc. and even though I have set defaults to these apps, like the default Gallery App to Photo in settings, in apps like Facebook when I go to post a picture or something it still is using Gallery to get me to pick the photo.
What do I need to do "fix" this so everything uses Photo? Use adb to disable Gallery (it's about the only thing I can think of I haven't tried)?
I do not think it's possible, I've also uninstalled several apps that come by default on the phone and I tried to use Google photos but according to a thread I follow to disable apps by adb, If the native gallery app is disabled, it would not be possible to access the thumbnail in the camera app. If you find some way to make it work, it would be great to know it too.
@acejavelin I'm with @Frankgefre . It's not only the non-working thumbnails. The Gallery is bound to the camera app. It provides features like adjusting the strengh of the bokeh effect or rendering a 3D-Panorama.
Thanks! Guess I'll just keep things as is.
You can try disabling it by adb, I'm using Google Photos instead of Emui 8 gallery app. Thumbnails works.
After that you can install again gallery app to your user 0. Or try with new user. Then use adb to remove gallery app.
This is basic behavior for the apps like Facebook it needs permission to access the Storage on your phone that includes Gallery and Photos, you can forbid this permission in phone Settings / Apps / Permissions.
Hi guys,
I love google lens - but since a few versions it includes some sort of new gallery view of pictures on your device.
Unfortunately, it also shows pictures out of hidden folders which is really crazy! I have some hidden stuff which ppl, looking at my phone, shall not see.
Any way to disable the new Gallery View, so when opening up the App, it shall simply show the preview of the camera... If I really need to scan a picture on my phone, I can share it using the Android Share menu to Google Lens, which happens so damn rarely.
Thanks!
