Location of gmail updates? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Im on wicked sensations .4
Gmail auto updated on me yesterday and borked itself. I've tried uninstalling it and flashing a couple zip files (such as inverted gmail) but none will work (says gmail has stopped working as soon as I click it) Im guessing this is because I wasnt able to uninstall updates due to it updating itself yesterday.
Anyone know the location these updates and/or have an alternative solution that im not thinking of.
(Would normally just reflash, but am in the middle of an event in tyrant unleashed and do not know if titanium will restore game data correctly as I see a lot of people in their forums complain about not being able to recover accounts)
Thanks in advance.

Multiple Icons for same application on CDMA Hero

Hey, not exactly sure about posting in the right sub forum but i have a little issue
i am currently using a CDMA Hero for Sprint and everything has been going well after fixing the battery issue with a different messaging app, but now a new little annoying issue has arised.
lately when i have opened my menu bar for all my apps i have been getting multiple icons for the same apps
Examples such as Bonsai Blast and Teeter have 2 icons right next to each other that are the same. They both work but its kinda annoying
also some of the applications names are incorrect. instead of ChompSMS its titles is now com.p1.chompsms along with Google Voice being voicemail.xxx... etc
i have tried searching the forums quite a bit and haven't quite found an answer for this issue and am not sure if it applies to the GSM version (thinking it might be a bug for Sense UI)
anyone have the same issue?
i have tried reinstalling the applications and rebooting and it still keeps happening. (not really wanting to hard reset...)
Any help would be very much appreciated!
Thanks!
you are not alone, yeah for i have two print voicemail apps one with a long com..... something same with google sky and google voice app its odd but hey hopefully we will get eclair soon
I don't think it is the Sense UI. I think it is Android. They show the long namsspace name for the application...and some apps show other weird names as well. It happens when you reboot the phone, at least for me. I think it has to do with the way the apps register themselves when the phone boots. Or it may be sloppy programming in the manifest files. Not sure.
Having the same issues. Google Sky will actually show up as the first application, and titled something with about an End User Agreement. When launched it pops up the EUA and only option is a force close.
Not sure what is causing it either.

I bet if you reboot your phone the issue will return though...try it!!!
If that IS the case, see my post in this CDMA forum about app versions reverting. what has happened is that your app, in this case google sky, has reverted to an initial version, without telling you.

Just tested this and you are correct! Google Sky maps and Google Voice are the ones that do this for me.

I've confirmed that this app version reverting issue happens with at least 16 apps, not just the two Google apps you mention. I have a support question open with Google, so hopefully they can figure it out soon. It makes people think something else is wrong entirely.

I really think this now too,
so far i reinstalled Flixster Movies and Handcent SMS and when my phone reboots i get some different weird icon for both that are not the original ones.
also with the reboot, one of my original problems happens with the names of ChompSMS and Google Voice with their com.xxx.etc names
it has to be something changed on a reboot.

Mercado, would you mind also informing them that a reboot also is causing apps to revert to their older versions? I think the problems are related. Thanks!

Oops! Sorry for making it sound like I am in on the android developer work. It is way over my head. Just thought I'd share a link I'd stumbled across. If it's kosher, perhaps you might want to share the url to your version reverting bug with that group. Not sure how that works.
In any case, it does seem like this is all related (missing icons, duplicate icons, renamed shortcuts, version issues, etc.). Unfortunately, it so far HTC has not acknowledged their role in the matter. Hopefully as the bug reports add up, they'll do something about it. Or, maybe they'll simply release Android 2.0 with Sense built in.

safely rm stock gmail app(possible google sign in error fix? dcv1)

I personally see no point in it, as the mail app covers all the basis, and the gmail app doesnt come with a widget...but I have a google branded phone, and could completely understand why I couldnt delete it (like how the IM app and the market are somehow closely related, and the deletion of one screws the other over) as it may cause issues.
On another note, is there a list somewhere that has all the apps safe to remove?
Damage V1
Rming with Root Explorer
EDIT
After following the advice of a responder to my original question, I moved the gmail.apk and gmailprovider.apk to my sd card, then removed them completely from system/app. I have rebooted, found no errors (downloaded an app from the market as a test, and also emailed myself) and most importantly, for the first time, have not had to resign into my google account upon reboot. Dont know if it was luck or wat, but Ive had to resign in everytimw (not a big de, but other then the intermitent lights, its the only bug Ive found with dcv1)
Im sure most of you are satisfied with the gmail app, but I personally prefer the mail app, as you can link more than one account and it has the widget. Ive noticed no delay in recieving or sending or any error outside of the mail/gmail app. Thought you all might be interested in knowing my findings

You can ADB into the phone and manually remove it, I believe.

All 17 pages of 'Apps Safe To Remove' talked nothing of gmail, other than how rming other apps effected Gmail; the search function brought up no answers, unless I missed something (which is very possible )
Id appreciate your help.
Try moving it and not completely removing it? Then if the phone crashes/wont work, you can move it back to it's proper location through recovery..?
I've never wanted to remove the stock gmail app, since the standard app doesn't requires checking of email, whereas the gmail app is a push email (I think?) I get notifications of gmail faster on my phone than I do on my PC.

I searched that thread, and every other one that came one while searching "remove gmail" but found nothing of use. I am fully aware of how to remove it, Im simply curious as to whether or not its SAFE to remove.
Thanks again

The email is delivered to your phone real time, as opposed to polling on a chedule (i.e. every 30 minutes).

The gmail servers notify your phone when you have a new email, instead of the phone polling the servers for new email (that is pull)
Saves battery life as your phone can sit idle and wait for google servers to tell it to get mail.

Have you guys tried using Exchange ActiveSync in the mail app for Gmail, this will make it push rather then pull. I believe you need to use m.google.com as the server, and change the frequency to "as items arrive".
Is the sign in thing really annoying? it only happens when you go to airplane mode or reboot. I dont think its a big deal it dont effects me at least

Perfection! I thank you most kindly.
Now all we need is to get the trackball working, and dcv1 will be TRUELY 100%.

Just a heads up, I still get the sign in error after I removed both apk's. I got it after rebooting and putting the phone into airplane mode.
Good attempt at trying to resolve the issue though!

Then you might just be screwed. Current speculation is that the trackball thing is intentional. If you check...whenever you get e-mail or a text message the trackball lights up. This behavior is quite possibly intended and a possible change for the 'official' 2.1 ROMs.

I can confirm that this is not a fix. I've had gmail deleted for weeks now (using k9 for pushing work and personal email) and I've still been getting the sign-in notification.
I was also thinking you need that for the market.

[ROM] 9/3/2010 | New Sprint OTA 3.28.651.1 | Stock, rooted, update.zip

This is a stock (rooted) copy of the 3.28.651.1 OTA that Fresh Evo 3.2 is based on.
The only changes from stock are:
Made in to an update.zip format so that you can flash it, and an update script was created
Added superuser, busybox, apps2sd, and the necessary mods to the ramdisk to make them all work
Other than that it's untouched. This is so that others can use this same base for whatever purpose that they want. This is not any type of rom that I'll be maintaining or supporting, that's what Fresh Evo is.
Enjoy!
Download: http://geekfor.me/evo/22/stock-rooted-3-28-651-1
What are the changes?
Thanx.
might test this one day
It has a new kernel that has better battery life than previous stock kernels.
So far having serious issues with data connection. On initial setup, it took 6 tries to get gmail account linked, and 3 tries with another e-mail account. Trying to access market now and it's taking an obscenely long time to load. First time I tried to access market the connection timed out.
Now searching for apps on market and connection keeps timing out. Guess I gotta go back to my 3.26 backup. Man I wanted better battery life.
Update: Finally got market to find Titanium Backup. It's downloaded 148KB in 5 minutes so far. lol
So is there any changes from the donor version to the official released ver.

Correct. Peep access to Twitter is a problem with the Peep software on ANY ROM, even on stock, non-rooted. HTC is working to address this problem.

I haven't flashed the new rom yet, on stock deodexed and my weather gps hasn't updated since yesterday. I've been syncing it every so often since about 7pm last night when I got home from out of town. It still works fine for maps so I think it's a system wide problem for htc weather, like peep.
Ok... downloaded from different link and didn't wipe before flashing and GPS weather works. First try did full wipe and had poor result. Now to test battery life.
btw... Twitter acknowledges issues with some 3rd party clients not working.

Unable to download/update any apps! Please Help!

After I flashed the recently released gingerbread leak for the droid charge (ep4p) through Odin, I haven't been able to download or update anything from the android market. It gives me the error "[application name]" could not be downloaded due to an error. (-101) I've tried basically everything I could google/search on forums and nothing has worked. I also have flashed the new GummyCharged and Humble 5. I've tried;
Force closing/wiping data for Market, Download Manager, and Google Services Framework
Factory Resetting the phone
Wiping cache/dalvik cache
Reverting back to EP3HA 2.3.5 (which I was originally on and the market worked just fine)
"Fixing" my phone indicated by imnuts
I have noticed that associating a different google account to my phone enabled me to download apps again, but this is not helpful at all since all my contacts and purchases are associated with my original google account that I've been using. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated with this issue. Thanks in advance.
Edit: I tried installing apps from the android market on my computer, which works just fine. Only when I try to download the app on my phone does it give me the error.
Ok I was gonna suggest a few things but need to get things clear.
When you associate a different google account what were/are you running?
What were you running in the first place with your contacts etc?
Re read it a couple of times lol. You installed EP4P but was it from a DEV?
You might have to edit a file in the build.prop.
ro.build.model=sch-i510
Also there is a market fix .apk
Umm hmm So if you use your old google email and go to your maket / my apps it doesnt show anything?
Now Im confusing myself. Yeah so what were you running with the original contacts etc.. lol

When I associated a different google account, I factory wiped and was on the rooted and debloated EP3HA 2.3.5
I was originally on this build, flashed to EP4P, and then reverted back to it.
The EP4P I flashed was the unofficial gingerbread leak I got over at mydroidworld.com (I would link to it, but since I just registered I can't until after 8 posts)
When I go to my market with my old google email, my apps still show up. It's just that I can't download or update anything. I hope this helps haha. Thanks for your time.

Thanks for trying :/ I really hope someone knows a solution to this. It's been driving me up the wall
did you clear the market app data/cache from application option in phone settings after you installed the new market? try clearing those and if possible unlink your google account from any google apps and clear those apps data/cache in settings as well then log in to all of them again and try downloading from the market
I had a similar problem where it did this on the deodexed/debloated EP4D.
Market always crashed right before download started.
I tried numerous things, but ended up Odining the ROM again. I started up the Market, signed in, let it do its thing. I recall it updated the Market.
I then built up from there with no issues.
I've had some annoying-ass problems with the Market before on different ROMs/kernels, tried all kinds of stuff, and just re-flashed to end the problem once and for all.
Have you tried to odin back to ee4 and accept the OTA for EP4? if it still has issues when bone stock the there is obviously some other underlying issue .

To everyone who's suggested a solution, much thanks. It appears the problem resolved itself. I hope this works. I called google to see what's up. Let's see what they can do. First level support didn't really know what to do.
I don't know if this is still true, but in the past people had market problems if google talk wasn't installed.
~
If you look at the logcat, you will see that there was an unexpted error there.
That HTTP error code 509 signals a bandwidth overage; to be more precise, the server will refuse the google account because you downloaded too much in a 24 hour window. This isnt just a google problem, i believe it is an Apache problem in general.
It is my first day with the phone and i have been downloading like crazy from it.
Same problem
Same problem on my Bionic and Xoom. Does anyone know what this 509's MB limit is or when it will expire?

If you look at the logcat, you will see that there was an unexpted error there.
That HTTP error code 509 signals a bandwidth overage; to be more precise, the server will refuse the google account because you downloaded too much in a 24 hour window. This isnt just a google problem, i believe it is an Apache problem in general.
It is my first day with the phone and i have been downloading like crazy from it.

I've had the problem for days now and didn't download much of anything before it happened...
Galaxy Nexus 4.0.1 ECL53F AR HD 1.3.3 stock kernel
I had the same issue on my Galaxy Nexus after flashing a custom rom. This is what I did to fix it.
Go to market.android.com and install an app from there to your phone.
However, if you are getting a 509 Error Code in logcat which is what I am experiencing right now, then you need to just wait until the bandwidth subsides.

[Q] Old Gmail on ICS

I already searched on here, and someone asked this before but got no reply.
I want to uninstall Gmail 4.7.1 from my Kyocera Rise that's running ICS, and install the older Gmail 2.3.4.1 on it. Has anyone else done this before? Any idea if it'll work?
I want to do this because 2.3.4.1 is what my old phone (was running Gingerbread) had on it. I don't like the newer Gmail app, IMO they made it harder to read and navigate. I find myself using my old phone just to check my email, because its less annoying. It'd be awesome if the older app were to work on here.

Welcome to Xda, you will see that this happens allot here and i wish everyone could get the help they deserve but most of the time they don't as for your problem, you could google Gmail 2.3.4.1 apk and might be able to find someone who mirrored that like you can try here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1181033 download that file from your phone or computer and find it and install it. it might not work because google sorta wants us to use newer versions of their apps but if it does you need to turn off the auto update so it wont. good luck and welcome to XDA!

Hello, thanks. I've been a lurker on here for a while, but I have no experience asking my own questions here.
Yup, I did that, I downloaded an .apk of 2.3.4.1. I was asking on here to try and find out if attempting this would even work.... in my research I can't find anything on whether something like this for Gingerbread will work correctly in ICS. It looks like I have to root to even remove Gmail 4.7.1 so that's why I was asking before getting into this.

The reason why you can't completely uninstall it is because it's a system app. So yes you would have to root to remove it
