64GB SDXC problem (already rooted) - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I have run into some problem which I cannot figure out. I have this Toshiba Micro SDXC 64GB (Japan) for 3 month in the Tab3 8.0 w/o issue. When I tried it in the Note Pro 12.2 and it failed to transfer files just like most KatKit users have experienced, so I rooted mine and tried again, not working. This same card has been working fine in both Tab2 7 & Tab3 8 (all rooted) w/o issue when transferring files from USB. Different cables different ports, different format (exFAT and FAT32), quick or full format, formatted inside Note Pro 12.2 or not, also same result. Is it possible it is merely a capability issue, or the Note Pro 12.2 simple cannot handle 64GB SD properly?
Now I know the root works because I also tried my Samsung Micro SDXC 32GB (Korea) in the 12.2 and it works perfectly even copying 28GB video/audio/eBooks through USB2.0 or 3.0 at once, so my 12.2 doesn't seem to be defective. I hate to spend more on another SD but ended up not working either. Any advice? Or any known working 64GB in this device?
*** UPDATE ***
Ok, I just bought a genuine Sandisk Ultra 64GB locally and it works! So, it is the Toshiba card, which perhaps was a counterfeit even though all tests suggest it is fine? At least I can start using my 12.2 instead of troubleshooting. Wasted 2 days.

AFAIK the act of merely rooting doesn't address the permission issues of Kitkat.
I think to assist others in helping you with your issue they may benefit by having a specific example of what isnt working (though I know you tried to be specific, its just all a jumble). Can you give a specific example of how a transfer fails with start to finish details? At least then others can try to replicate things on their devices.
From what you're describing though if you're replicating an action with the 32GB card that you have vs the 64GB and both are formatted the same then it must be a compatibility issue with the 64GB card.
For me I've been using a Sandisk Extreme Plus 64gb that was formatted exFAT out of the box. I've typically placed video files in the 1GB to 2.5GB range onto the card while inserted in the tablet via USB 2.0 cable from a macbook running mavericks w/ android file transfer and have just tested the placement of a 12GB file using USB 2.0 cable from my PC running windows 7 via simple drag and drop. I'm currently rooted and have applied the group definition permission fix to my platform.xml file.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that I modified the platform.xml too.
I merely copied files from W7 through USB and it would copy some files and then soon stopped and the SD would disappear. It's the same as if the device wasn't rooted at all being mentioned in another thread. But this only happens to this specific card only.

Must be the card if other cards being used the same way don't exhibit the same behavior. If both cards did it then perhaps it would be a driver issue.

[Q] MicroSD and Mac

I received my 16gb MicroSD card today, and happily slapped it into my GTab. Question, and it appears fine on the Tablet itself, however when I then plug my Gtab into my Mac, only the built-in 16Gb are showing up to copy files. Is there a solution for this?

This is normal, the USB port mounting paradigm for the GTAB is only set to read the internal SDCard. With the CM7 Experimental ROM, I think the mounting paradigm is set to only read the external MicroSD with the USB connected, I may be wrong about that though.

Compatible/Incompatible MicroSD/SD Cards

Had some problems trying SD cards and MicroSD cards for the Infinity/Prime docks/tablet. Thought I would share them so others could also update and post their compatibility issues.
PNY 16GB (MicroSD) / 32GB (SD) Pro-Elite: Status: Incompatible: Formated with Fat32/NTFS and exFAT. All three had no problems reading from the card however writing any files completely locked the tablet up at the 90MB mark causing it to force reboot. Tried 2 cards purchased from Best Buy (16GB and 32GB) on both my Prime and Infinity tablets/docks both had these issues. Card is rated for 35MB write however I found no circumstance using my PC to copy files to where I got over 10-11MB/sec. Read sat at around 21MB/sec.
Sandisk Ultra 32GB (MicroSD, (Docked with MicroSD Adapter)): Status: Compatible: Formated with Fat32/NTFS and exFAT. All three work great reading and writing on the tablet. Writes were a steady 22MB+, Reads just as good. I assume once the I/O bottleneck is fixed this will improve, as it sits on the PC I get around 30-40MB write, 55+MB read (burst). Writing a 3GB file ~ 15-20MB wite.
I should mention I was using a USB 3.0 card reader to read/write when testing on the PC.
Please update this thread with your cards you have tried so others like me will not have to return to BestBuy 3 times to finally get a compatible card.
Thanks!
Might the incompatibility be caused by card class?

It is possible however I have not tried any other cards from any other brands.
The PNY is listed as: SDHC Class 10, UHS-1
The SanDisk is listed as: SDHC Class 10 UHS-1 so they seem to be exactly the same class.

I do not know how you formatted it, and which filesystem(s) your phone supports. I'd set out my question in the Experia forum(s).
I bought a 64GB Samsung microSDXC UHS-I card pro class 10
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-micro-UHS-1-Class-Galaxy/dp/B00AK31M3G
And it works great, havent had a problem with it, I tested it through a sd card slot with sd card adapter and I got a constant 16-17 mb/s write speed with files bigger than 5 gb. I also tried formatting in exFAT and NTFS, and both work.
I hope this clears up some doubts about UHS-I cards. Or at least doubts about this card.
I also bought the SanDisk Ultra 32GB Class 10 microSDHC UHS-I Memory Card includes an SD adapter and use that on my TF700 without any issues at all.
I have connected it both directly in the SD slot and also via the adaptor via the OTG dongle into the USB slot as a 2nd memory card.
Both have worked reall well, so am surprised the card is not working for some.

I just got my SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 from amazon today, worked out of the package and then reformated to exFAT and worked also. Haven't do much else with it but so far so good.

For an SD card I picked up a Polaroid 64GB SDXC Class 10 UHS-1 for $32 a couple weeks ago (was going to get a SanDisk as well but for $20 off figured I'd give it a shot and it had some nice write/read speeds), worked out of the box on my dock and did the formats. Rght now I've got it filled up with 60gb of movies for an upcoming trip and everything seems to be working fine as well.

Did you try that Polaroid card in the dock only or does it both work in the dock and the tablet. I might just buy 2 of these and be done with it.

I got the Samsung UHS-1 from Amazon as well, tested it and I am very happy with this investment of $65. Now when I do a TWRP backup, it finishes in 212 seconds for 1850 MB, averaging 8.7MB per second. When I copy files over from a PC, using the Silicon Power USB 3.0 card reader which is UHS-1 compatible, I constant have a write speed of 14.5 MB/s and the Read speed is over 27 MB/s.
They advertise to have a read speed of 70 and write speed of 20 though.
Your pc probably just cant go any faster .
I'm using two 64gb SanDisk SDXC class 10 in NTFS format, and two Medion (aldi) 32 gb class 6 in NTFS.
All four work perfectly well. But they are only used for storing media.

I use SanDisk Mobile Ultra 32GB UHS card as my Data2SD card. Formatted with FAT32 and ext2. NTFS works fine too. But be aware that ext 4 with Data2SD on this card might cause some trouble. I had a lot of freezes and random reboots with Data2SD as long as I used ext4 format. Now I formatted to ext2 and so far I had no freezes nor reboots.

[Q] How to make Note 12.2 LTE read/write HDD in NTFS?

Hi everyone! It appears really not so simple to make LTE version to support NTFS-formatted hard drives. First, LTE version does not give enough power to USB port to support hard disks. Unlike Wi - Fi version, or phablets like Note 3 or Note 2, which do not have any problem with that. That is already disappointing. May be there is any patch to solve this problem? Otherwise only solution left is to connect hard drives with extra power supply, from external battery for example, and by doing this to sacrifice mobility. Secondly, even if you managed to make your hard drive work with Note 12.2 LTE, it does not support NTFS, not even with root and special software like one from Paragon, which works with most of other devises. That's because SELinux is set to Enforcing mode in Note 12.2 LTE, and for NTFS support Permissive mode is needed. And to be able to change it to Permissive, one should, I've heard, to flash custom kernel to devise, which is really too much for getting such a simple functionality as NTFS support...
So, the question is, is there any other way, more easy and simple?
And the other question is, why Google (and Sumsung) made such a big deal out of such a basic functionality as this? Really, really disappointing...
Uh, the LTE version powers external hard drives just fine... It has no issue reading my 3 NTFS 2TB WD Elements drives over the official OTG cable. Even three at the same time over a USB hub.
Au contraire, it's the Exynos that lacks the power. The Snapdragon 800 has never had an issue with powering external HD's.
It can READ it just fine. It plays videos, music and magazines perfectly well.
Writing, however... Well, it's Linux. Linux has always hated NTFS.
I've got one additional 2TB drive formatted in exFAT. Supports files up to over several terabyte in size and you can read/write to it on pretty much every system, including Android. (except older Windows.)
They did not incorporate NTFS because NTFS is licensed and patented by Microsoft.
If you have root try Paragon NTFS AND HSF app. Did not tried on my Note Pro (no root) but work well on Note 10.1 the first.

Well, that's really good news! Thanks.
But what you mean by "official OTG cable"? I've got one, official from Samsung, bought in Samsung store, which was working well with Note 2 and working well now with Note 3, and doesn't work with my Note 12.2 LTE. But this cable is USB 2.0, so I thought may be USB 3.0 is needed. But in all official Samsung stores where I tried to find it (in two countries) they told me that official OTG USB 3.0 still did not come on market. So, what cable do you have? Is it 2.0 or 3.0? And where did you get it?

I've got the one meant for the S2/S3. Bought it through a local webshop, Bol.com. (horrendously unreliable shop, don't order there.)
There are no USB3.0 OTG cables as of yet from Samsung.
Samsung ET-R205UBE USB-OTG
EAN: 8806071451787
That's weird. It loaded the day I bought the OTG cable, but now it gives me a 'blank sdcard' error. (I was going to take a screenshot.)
Yet when I get impatient and just pull out the drive (loading 2TB takes ages on anything), it briefly displays all the folders.
I've got pretty much everything formatted to exFAT these days, though. Oh the hassle of having to deal with Apple users... (which also doesn't support NTFS ootb. Linux, again.)

Yes, I have same cable...But it doesn't work. And not only with mine, it doesn't work also with my friend's Note 12.2 LTE. Strange... May be that is the case of different consignments - first ones came with this problem, and later Samsung made it right...
Well, anyway that's not good...

I find this very frustrating. I know this tablet is more than capable of reading any drive in any format. I bought the AT&T LTE version because I wanted the snapdragon. Now I find out that I cannot mount my drive, which is NTFS due to not being able to set the kernel permissive. I've tried everything except flash the newly posted Verizon Kernel. I wanted to use this as a laptop replacement. I might have to return it now. I don't want to have to reformat. Plus I have too many files on here already and no where to place them while I reformat the drive. This feature works fine on my galaxy note 8.0.

I have the Note pro LTE 12.2 through AT&T and it doesn't supply enough power to read from any of my external hdds. I've tested 8 drives from 64gb to 500gb with 6 different brands, all self powered. Every single drive works great with my note 3 using the same cables. Note 3 and 12.2 were bought from at&t the second they were available. It would appear the LTE 12.2 just doesn't supply enough juice. My coworker has a WiFi model that my drives work with. I can also attach a Samsung external CD rom drive to my note 3 and his 12.2 and run dvds. I can't on my LTE 12.2 note pro.
Signature sooooo out of date. Been away awhile.

That's probably an AT&T setting, because mine can read exFAT and FAT32 well enough without issue. Apparently NTFS has decided once was enough.

Exfat, fat32 has NOTHING to do with it. The needle clicks and the light flashes on the drives. The CD won't fully spin up on the cdrom. If I use a drive that's externally powered, it reads Exfat, ntfs, and fat32 all day long. The tablet doesn't supply enough power for self powered hdds. Has nothing to do with format. Not sure how much clearer I can get.
If power is the issue the one could use one of these and supply power through the second plug.

I knew what you meant the first time, cheers.
My WD Elements 2.5" USB3 1TB Fat32 formatted drive loads just fine. Achingly slow, but fine. (It takes about 10 minutes.) The 320GB NTSF version is a little quicker, but gives me an error.
Mind you, my OLD WD Elements (still USB3 though) does the same as you mention, clicking, displaying an empty drive and not fully starting up. The newer drives don't have this issue.
Back to the subject: so, any ideas how to run NTFS?
I am still waiting for my cable, so I cannot test, however on previous hardware, I was succeful in using below solutions without need of kernel support!
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155363
it does install additional binaries that can be used to mount exfat and NTFS stuff from userspace without kernel module or inbuilt support for above filesystems. It did work for me on other device, on CM11 based rom; also I have used it on Jelly Bean ROMs heavily, (even if somtimes not directly out-of-the-box then I was at least able to trigger the mount command manually or by creating .mountpoint files etc - see description in the topic)
2. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.paragon.mounter&hl=pl
A to dla odmiany appka która aż zadziwia - po prostu DZIAŁA(ła) na JB, ktory od momentu instalacji samodzielnie montował ntfs'y bez jakichkolwiek dalszych pytań... Nie wiem czy kompatybilna z kk.

Taken off the Meenova website:
Due to hardware and software limitations of many Android devices -- especially older ones, compatibility with devices not listed here can't be guaranteed.
Samsung: Galaxy S5, S4, S3, S2, S4 Active, Note 3, Note 2, Note, Mega; Galaxy Tab S
Judging from that I would say you'd be perfectly fine, and common sense was telling me before looking it up that you'd be fine.
I can't think of a single modern device that doesn't support OTG, and all OTG devices pretty much work the same.
The only question is whether it supports NTFS or not, but hey... Just format the MicroSD card with FAT32 and you won't have any worries at all.
My recommendation: Go for it :highfive:

It should work for storage sizes up to 2TB. If the S6 can't power a HD over OTG cable, you can get a special OTG cable that lets you add the necessary power from another source.
Hi,
Just a suggestion here, instead of doing it manually by using card and card reader you can do it on the fly you can use sidesync app or smart switch or any other app.
Just install on both phones fire it up on both phones and choose send. It will show you a list of all the content by type and category! Choose whatever you want move and hit send and now on the receiving phone click receive and it'll either create or ask you to join a network u can connect it on send phone by choosing the receiving phone in the "found connection within the app. You will see it start sending files and on the other they'll start coming in. I it is pretty fast too. I have about 40 gigs on my extra and around 20 in internal loads of mp3 which didn't take long. you can check it out. there's even an app by Jio called Jio Switch which does the same. No more downtime and no attachments needed?.
Works!!! I use mine through a SANDISK Wireless USB Flashdrive-(it has a micro-SD slot) out through an OTG & it has been performing flawlessly! You should have no problems with it, but I would make sure it's formated to ExFat or ExFat32 just to make sure it reads....

Phone supports 128GB SD Card

I thought it was interesting that a 128GB MicroSD card I bought works flawlessly with this phone. The phone handled all the formatting and showed no problems to note. I was able to transfer over 40GB using the phone and SMB transfer no problem. This is the brand in specific.
