nexus 5 battery level going up !! - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
Just noticed on my nexus 5 if i use it for a while obviously the battery level goes down, but then if i look a bit later its gone back up!
for example i was on my lunch and used nexus for a while, checked battery it was on 61%, then an hour later i checked and it was on 63% ??
When i looked at the graph on the battery usuage it does show it going up.
Anyone else noticed this?

Yes, such things happen at times.. Battery Stats get reset as soon as you reach full charge... So all will be well as soon as you fully charge the device

I think it's because of the weather instead. Going from cold to warm would in my theory make the battery percentage higher.

I think it does like rootSU said - it goes in, checks the voltage, and if you, at this moment are pushing your phone, the voltage is dropping, so it makes a prediction and you get a drop in % of battery. When you stop using your phone so heavy, the voltage raises a bit, because the battery is not so heavily used, the phone checks voltage, it's more than before, so you get a percent or two. I'd say it's not just a statistic, the battery, when heavily used, drops in voltage, but when you offload it, it recovers some ammount, witch means you gain some battery life. And if someone wants to know why it's like that, think of what happens when you plug in something with a high wattage use in your home - the lights dimm a little bit, because the bigger load, requires more power, meaning voltage and amps, so, the voltage drops. When you unplug it, voltage goes up. It's the same thing.

Maximizing Battery Life

What do you guys do to maximize your battery life? I just can't seem to get decent life. Average is probably 5 hours with heavy usage.
Any recommendations?

The usual - brightness as low as you can stand, radios not in use turned off, screen timeout 15 seconds, 200-1400 conservative governor in SetCPU.
Search AutoKiller in the market -- choose "optimal" profile, so far has given me an extra two hours today over what I got yesterday.
5h of heavy use is good already.
You can tweak your idle batt life, 2g-only, undervolted kernel, avoiding power hungry rom.
Idle battery life is just amazing with stock... just test it over night, 6hrs get 2/3% for me.
I can get 30hrs with 4hrs with screen on, the screen is the key here, i can get 5hrs with 4hrs with screen on too. ;o)

Try a kernel that is made to optimise batt life with display active, like the XTEUV92 Trinity kernel.

I tried almost every single combination of rom + kernel. And for me, pure stock has the best battery life, by far.
But i'm getting bored and should flash something... )
Ps: afaik trinity doesnt work with stock. Did it change?

How would you define "heavy" usage?
Also, what does your "battery use" stats say? (Settings - About Phone - Battery Use)
5 hours of truly heavy usage (online gaming, for instance) is actually to be expected.

i'm using the same stock 2.3.4 as your signature and tried the morfic kernel from yours, but got no lock at all, freezes and reboots...
that's a little strange for me, first time i see it in my device... =o\\

You can create a custom prl setting. Turn wifi to never sleep when you're at home... Have the prl to auto *CDMA or GSM* Which ever your network is on. (This goes to all Nexus S. users). So you have wifi on with a signal and 3g off. The phone stays in 2g for calls and uses wifi for data. Turn off google location services while your at home, turn off roaming, turn all of that off. I get about 13 hours of battery life with heavy usage. People think wifi drains your battery but it doesn't if you have mobile data turned off. When you have 3g turned on it's constantly searching for a better connection. If you have wifi on and a strong connection it isn't constantly polling.
are there any charging habits that would help prolong battery life? I usually just charge my phone every night cause, if I remember correctly, these batteries don't have a memory or anything. anyone know if that is the smartest thing to do?

I hope you don't mean overnight. I don't know if phones have auto-cutoff feature (a la laptops), but it's safer just not to charge overnight.
I personally use an extension that has a timer built-in. Nifty. Set the timer, plug the phone in, it will automatically start and stop the charging at the predetermined times. I usually time the charging to end right before I wake up, so the battery doesn't stay fully charged for too long. I heard batteries corrode faster when they're fully charged.
When my battery life starts getting shorter than usual, I let them drain until the phone turns off automatically (well I actually try not to get to that point, but seldom succeeded ), and as soon as possible charge it until full.
Usually the battery holds longer then. It has something to do with teaching the battery about the true empty and true full.. or something.....

doesn't the nexus s have a built in cut-off feature so it will only charge to 95% though? I figure that would take care of the full charge issue. i'm also not sure if lithium ion batteries have a memory, but you could always reset the battery stats if you're on root to compensate for the whole draining and fully charging thing.

Battery stats! That's the word I was looking for No I wasn't referring to the memory effect
I don't know what would happen when the cut-off feature kicks up. My Nexus S still shows a charging icon even a while after full, so I don't wanna risk it.
The best way is by touching the charger unit after a while and see if it's warm/hot. If it is, it's still charging. But you gotta give it time to cool down first (after it's finished charging) Haven't gotten around to it, though. Always forgot to check the charger

lol, I know that my phone for sure won't charge to 100% from watching it, so even after a night of charging it's still at 95%. I've read a few explanations on this forum about the whole not fully charging thing too, so i'm pretty sure that it's like that on purpose.

Battery 100% charged?

So I read that a ton of ppl has issues hitting 100% battery charge, I'm also seem to be having the issue till I got and played Plants vs Zombies...after like 1 hour playing I was about to turn on the alarm and hit the bed and I just noticed my battery level, 100%....so I thought that it was an error and I locked the phone just to see on the lock screen "charged"....btw, when I started playing the battery was at around 92% and I've never seen 100% before on my NS.
How many ppl is able to get their phones to fully charge to 100%? and, does any of u installed or did anything in particular to fix the issue?
Hm, only had mine 2 weeks and have yet to get a 100. My epic would but it was a faux 100 if anything as it. Would drop down to around 98-96 immediately.

Only way to hit 100% is to use an external battery charger.

you can use that if u really want too get too 100% i used for a few weeks then just stopped caring. Its just the way samsung programmed it to pro long the overall life of the battery.
Yeah, mine caps at 95% normally. Might have a look at that program. How much shorter would battery life be if we let it charge to 100%?
If you leave the screen on (by any means, whether you were playing game, which requires you to have the screen on, or change the setting to have screen always on), it will charge to 100%.
will the battery life shorter with this trick or using that app to force to charging completely ?
Its not an issue. Samsung designed it that way. Its to help keep the battery healthy and extend its life.

I honestly don't see it being noticeably shorter life span. We keep phones for a max of 2 years now days. I rather have a full battery now then it last an extra few months. Battery's are cheap so we dont need them to last forever .
Well, I have used the phone while connected to the charger but never passed 96%, only after playing PvsZ I got the 100% and then the number went down till 96% and stayed that way after I closed the game.

I'm running Formels MIUI, it comes with Pete#5....still....gonna test again with PvsZ in a bit, rt now the phone has been steady at 96% for the past 2 hours....man gotta sleep soon also...
***Update: PvsZ does work to go pass the 96%, I hit another 100%....
How many times is this very topic going to be discussed? And with all the info on xda, why is there so much false/incorrect information in this thread?

Phone shuts off at 6%

Hi everyone,
I'm currently running CM10 on my AT&T One X. It runs great, but when I hit 6% battery, it suddenly jumps to 1% and shuts off a few seconds later. I've tried recalibrating by using the app available on Google Play, as well as letting it shut off and recharging all the way. Neither have seemed to fix the issue. My question is; are there any other ways to recalibrate the battery, or simply cause the battery indicator to display the proper percentage?

Have you looked to see if anyone else on CM10 reporting anything similar?
In any case, the battery meter is not all that accurate in the best of conditions. I wouldn't trust the meter being below 10% to mean you have much significant battery. Really, by the time you hit 20% or so, you should be looking to charge.
Why you letting it get that low? Normally around 10% I plug in.

It's not habitual or anything. I just normally don't plug it in until I go to sleep, and sometimes it dies before that time comes.

This isn't based on facts but my 2 cents is that because the calibration of the battery isn't wiped, it's not accurate. There's no wipe battery stats in TwRP. If you ever notice the battery percentage in TWRP after flashing many ROM, it differs from the actual phone.
I wipe the batterystats.bin in data/system when full then reboot but who knows if that even works. I had my phone turn off @ 3% once so who knows but charge it as soon as it gets in the teens. Its bad for the battery if it keeps powering off when low.

You're right: that isn't based on facts.
Battery stats get reset every time you charge your phone. Manually wiping them does nothing.

This issue has been discussed in other threads. Seems to be specific To CM roms only.

I wouldn't worry about it. Mine turns off anywhere from 5 to 15%. The battery percentage is just an estimate based on the software, it's not an actual indicator. As such there are tons of variables that can affect when the phone is actually out of battery.
TWRP also doesnt report battery correctly and it has nothing to do with the stats. It is taking more of an educated guess as to where it's at. Believe it has something to do with are phones.

Battery percentage is guessed at based on voltage. As the battery drains, voltage decreases slightly. Yes it is an educated guess. Every battery behaves slightly differently and has a unique profile or discharge curve. Some may be steeper than others at the end, but the device should learn this and adjust accordingly. An internal short in a composite battery like this would also exhibit this behavior, only exhibiting itself at certain voltage levels(dependant on location of physical short in battery) where voltage drops to 0 at that moment. I have seen this issue in defective packs where they work fine most of the time, but then zero all of a sudden. I'm not saying this is your problem, but the case design/new soft shell battery(no hard plastic shell to protect against the internal layers from being squeezed together) is wide open to physical damage from the phone being compressed.
Try a stock ROM and verify it works normally. If not, the battery is damaged.
My One X has never shut off before it reached 1%. I unlocked it 4 days after getting it in the beginning of June and have been running CR ever since and never had a steep battery decline.

Battery life problems.

Hello, I'm currently running cm 9, however the battery life is just awful
When the phone is on sleep it loses like 1 percent every 5-10 minutes
I am using an extended battery as well, please tell me what to do I was on GB before and the battery was outstanding, I could go on one charge the whole day with heavy usage, now i dont think I can make it through the day with light usage on this

If you flashed the Feb 27 cm9 you should flash proton kernel so you can watch videos. Battery life isn't as good as gb no matter what you do. Also give it some time to settle in. It takes more than a couple hours.
alright thank you... I just flashed the newest version of cm9 a few hours ago, I was flashing a bunch of roms and this one seemed the best... do you know how to force a device into deep sleep cause that seems to be the problem i believe

just the screen and the android system... very interesting thing though is happening
I'm running a bunch of quadrants to get the battery down to 0, and the battery is all the way down to 1%, however it's been on 1% for like 6 quadrant tests... maybe its just a problem with the indicator, however another indicator also says it's at 1%... very interesting
If you are on CM9, I suggest you flash Hefe or Proton.
I use Hefe because according to the posts being made it puts your phone into deep sleep, which means longer battery life.

Definitely a battery problem. This happens to me on one of my batteries but not on another. Time to buy a new one. I haven't tested it fully but it does appear to be just a display issue. Sometimes the bad battery will make the phone display 1% but it will still act as if it had way more than 1% charge left. I haven't done any testing on that regard but that's what it appears to do.

I don't believe it to be a battery problem, because I've been on GB with absolutely no problems and exceptional battery... I just upgraded to ics not long ago, and the battery life instantly screwed up
Have you set the cpu governor to anything silly like performance?
Have you let it charge up fully at least once?
Search xda for "better battery stats" app, use it to see if you're getting deep sleep.
Flash hefe over release 8 and youll have a little better battery. Proton doesnt deep sleep

Proton DOES deep sleep. That was one of its major features.
Certain scheduler/governor combinations work better on different kernels, though. If the specific one you like most sleeps better on Hefe, great. If the one you like does best on Proton, great. Just be aware that most issues are either physical or user-inflicted...
In this case, your battery is almost certainly dying. The variance in power over a reboot is a definite tell that your battery is probably swollen. If you can spin it on a table, the cells are starting to die. This does not mean you can't keep using it, but it does mean that your battery life will be irregular. It also means that you'll have significantly "higher" battery levels if you reboot the phone with external power connected, but the battery will discharge very quickly if it hasn't actually reached whatever level it believes it should be at.

I'm not too sure how to go about this, but when I try to charge my nexus 5, regardless of the cable or charger i use, it won't charge faster than 1a unless I blow into the micro USB port hard, and I'm not sure if it's dust, because if I unplug it and plug it back in again it will go back down to 1a charging, when i blow into it, it can charge as high as 1700mAh...
Sorry for the noob question, it's my first post.
What are you using to determine the mAh?

He's just going through throttling which is normal. My phone does the same when battery is higher than 80%. My phone charges at 1.7A from 0-80% then 1A to 90%, then 0.6A to 100%. It's all pre dictated by the onboard battery chip

Yeah true, I find the estimation by current widget to be alright for general current usage when comparing chargers. As long as the battery doesn't take several hours to charge, there's no need to be concerned
It was below 80%, and i realize that current estimates aren't 100% accurate but I don't think they would be 600mah different to the original...
I'm using battery monitor widget, I'll post screenshots when my battery drops to about 70%.
I'm not sure if my micro USB port is faulty or maybe it's just dusty, even though it doesn't look dusty, does anyone else have this same issue?

I'm using battery monitor widget, but it shouldn't vary so much just by blowing into the charging port, should it?
Here's before and after blowing into it, I'm using the nexus charging accessory from the play store with a 1.8a output.
I know exactly what you're going through, OP. This technique was the only way I could Legend of Zelda to work.

Haha, which fittingly has been described by Nintendo to be a placebo effect. If you just took the cartridge out and placed it back in, apparently that had the same chance of working.
I think the same can be said for this situation.
OP, mA current as reported by Android jumps all over the place. I could take a screenshot of it showing 1600mA, 1000mA and 600mA all within 20 seconds of each other. The only thing that you can do to try and prove this is happening (which I seriously doubt) is to use a log to plot the charging level over time. Even then the results could be skewed by whatever the phone happens to be doing during that time.

No that's not it, it does junp a little but never that much for me, it might be a problem with your charger if you're getting that...
Changed the rom and kernel and the problem was solved, i still can't explain it but meh, I'm happy with it now, if only I could do something about battery life now...
You can only do so much with 2300mah in such a high powered device...

This was with the stock 1.2A charger. It's actually just my phone's usage constantly changing that causes the spikes, if logs were able to update more than once per second it would be jumping even more as I'm able to see with manual refresh. This happens during charging, full load and idle situations but your issue might have had something to do with the USB fast charge settings in certain ROMs.
I find the 2300mAh battery can be pushed surprisingly far, depending on your usage. If you're willing to sacrifice certain settings it can make things easier. This is on stock and unrooted, 20% brightness. I disabled Locations, Auto Syncs only allowed periodically at preset times, and used apps that are fairly battery efficient.
That was mostly WiFi, but this was with more mobile usage. Two work days on a weak 3G signal, 40% brightness using mostly Hangouts, Feedly, and 2 hours of video. Check out the [Battery Life Help] thread for more tips.
That's pretty impressive, i usually get about 3 hours SoT, with a bit under an hour phone calls usually and occasional snapchat, usually just internet browsing, underclocked to 1.7 and i almost half an hour SoT improvement without any loss to performance, cause i don't use my phone for gaming...

It's actually just my phone's usage constantly changing that causes the spikes, if logs were able to update more than once per second it would be jumping even more as I'm able to see with manual refresh. This happens during charging, full load and idle situations but your issue might have had something to do with the USB fast charge settings in certain ROMs.
I find the 2300mAh battery can be pushed surprisingly far, depending on your usage. If you're willing to sacrifice certain settings it can make things easier. This is on stock and unrooted, 20% brightness. I disabled Locations, Auto Syncs only allowed periodically at preset times, and used apps that are fairly battery efficient.
That was mostly WiFi, but this was with more mobile usage. Two work days on a weak 3G signal, 40% brightness using mostly Hangouts, Feedly, and 2 hours of video. Check out the [Battery Life Help] thread for more tips.
