[INFO][APP SETUP] Lockscreen Notifications on Android [4.2-4.4] - Android General

Lockscreen Notifications for Android [4.2+]
I decided to open this thread because of the number of PM's I get regarding how I get my lockscreen notifications to work. I posted once, a while ago that I have a setup for lockscreen notifications, and since then I've been getting PM's asking how I do it. I know that some KitKat ROMs (e.g PAC, Beanstalk, among others) have Lockscreen Notifications. But not everyone runs a custom ROM. So here's how to do it regardless of ROM, and regardless of a secure lockscreen Root is not required, although it will work better if you have root (allows widgets to start maximised on lockscreen).
Example: (yes you can add more apps than this)

What you need:
Smartphone running android 4.2-4.4. In Android L, notifications are built into the lockscreen :good:
Steps
1. Download DashClock Widget, and DashNotifier.
If you're on KitKat you can try XblastTools along with Xposed framework. Note that using the Xposed module may cause SystemUI FC's on some ROMs, for example SlimKat. Because of this, I use DashClock and DashNotifier.
2. Add Dashclock widget to your lockscreen.
You may have to enable widgets in the security settings of your phone to be able to do this. For those who haven't done it before, from your lockscreen, swipe to the right and click the '+' symbol. Add Dashclock.
3. Add DashNotifier Extension.
When you click to add Dashclock in step 2, it will bring you to the Dashclock setup. Add an extension "DashNotifier 1".
4a. Configure your extension.
Click the 3-dot menu in the lower right hand corner of the "DashNotifier 1" extension, and choose Settings. From here, choose the application you want to receive notifications from. IMPORTANT: Make sure to click "Show notification content", so that you'll be able to read the notification from the lockscreen.
4b. Configure your text colour to make it readable.
From the Dashclock settings page, click the "Advanced" option from the drop down menu. Choose a colour for the text ("Foreground color") which will allow you to read text over your lockscreen wallpaper. If you can't find a good colour, change the 'Background' option to say 50% and then try. If need be, change this percentage even higher.
5. Set up notifications for all needed apps.
This probably doesn't need saying, but repeat steps 3&4 for all the apps you want lockscreen notifications for.
6a. IMPORTANT [4.3, 4.4]- Allow Notification access for DashNotifier.
On my ROM (SlimKat), this is under Settings>Security>Notification access, where I click the checkbox for DashNotifier. Your ROM may list this in a different location, but you still need to activate this setting if you're on 4.3 or 4.4.
6b. IMPORTANT [4.2] - Allow accessibility option for DashNotifier.
This is usually under Settings>Accessibility>DashNotifier, and turn this on. No need if you're not on 4.2.
7. [ROOT] Start widgets maximised.
If you can't activate this option, you'll have to swipe down on your widget to view their content from the lockscreen. (As I would from the second screenshot at the beginning of this post.)
A lot of custom ROMs have this option. For me, it's under Settings>Security>Widgets>Start maximized. Your ROM may have this option in another place. If you don't have this option in your ROM, you can use Xposed framework and [MOD][Xposed] Maximize widgets on lockscreen.
Credits: These guys have done all the hard work. I'm just explaining how I use their tools
Femblack, for Xblast tools.
Roman Nurik for Dashclock.
umanx for DashNotifier
rovo89 for Xposed framework
MohammedAG for his mod to maximise widgets.

Nothing else to add. Nicely done

I'm not too sure what you mean. What device do you have? And what lockscreen settings do you mean? The built in settings included in the rom for lockscreen, or the settings for dashclock?

Thanks for your quick response and yes I was looking at the wrong thing it was actually the Dash clock settings I lost. I don't think there is a settings menu in the rom for lockscreen?
Thanks again for your help Ritti

Oh ok. Then if all you have lost is the settings shortcut for DashClock... Add a new dashclock widget, add it to your homescreen as its easy. From there, immediately after you place the widget, it will open up the settings for Dashclock. Go to 'Advanced' and then choose 'Settings button'. Change that from 'hidden', to 'Show in launcher' or 'in Expanded widget'. It doesn't matter which, if you have it as in the expanded widget it will show the settings cog as in my screenshots in OP, else it will have a settings option in your app drawer. Remove your lockscreen widget, and re-add it and you should be good to go

I know the thread says only 4.2+, but is there a way to make all this possible on 4.1 JB?

Wellllll.... You could use widget locker app. But dashclock won't install on anything lower than 4.2. So you'd have to use Nils or something like that instead of Dash clock.... Nils isn't very pretty

Just my 50 cents about lockscreen notifications:

Sorry if links like that are prohibited, I didn't know that.

Hello, I am running SlimKat 4.4 for the S3. I followed all the directions properly in the OP, but when I press the power button to wake up my phone, it bounces from the original swipe lockscreen, to the DashNotifier one. Then I have to press the lock icon at the bottom and then swipe right on the next lockscreen to unlock my phone. How do I make it so the DashNotifier is the only lockscreen?

Sorry for the slow response.
It sounds like you've got more than one page of widgets on the lockscreen. Wake your phone, long press on the screen, and drag it to the top "X - remove " to remove that screen. Now lock and unlock your phone and see if it works

My first Android App!

Hi,
This is my first Android app, NBLauncher. It's a simple app that let you add shortcuts to apps as buttons in the notification bar (expanded view), so you can quickly launch an app from anywhere (as long as you have access to the notification bar). I've seen similar apps on the Android market, but I haven't seen one that uses multiple buttons/apps on the same notification line. NBLauncher currently allows a maximum of 15 buttons (three lines of five). After installing, launch NBLauncher from app drawer to configure what apps you want to add to notification bar. Use the up/down arrows to rearrange the order of the buttons. Make sure to click "Done" when exiting. You'll then see the NBLauncher icon on the notification bar. Pull down the notification and you'll see the buttons to launch your app. It also saves the list of apps so you when reboot the phone, it auto-starts with your configured list.
Two minor things that I haven't figure out. Maybe you guys could help.
1. Each notification line requires it's own notification icon in the bar. So if there are three lines of buttons, there will be three separate icons. I have made only one visible and the others invisible, but I have no idea how to get rid of the invisible icons while keeping the notification. Any ideas?
2. During installation of the app, Android lists accessing phone book/contact as one of the things that the app does. But I am not touching the phone book or any contact info. How can this be? How does it determine what an app could do? Based on permission? This obviously has an negative effect of scaring people away from the app
Feed backs and suggestions are welcome. Thanks.
can you give us a little screenshots before we give it a go?..
Nice, I like it, much better then App Launcher, which costs $2 right now.
I couldn't find it in the Market though, did you pull it?
Only complaint so far is that it doesn't play well with lcd density changes. I'm set at 161, so the UI is a little cramped when setting up, but the launcher in the notification tray scales perfectly and looks good. There are several market apps that don't scale well with density changes, so it's not even that big of a deal. Spare Parts, MixZing, Mint.com, and Shazam don't either, just to name a few.
Gratuitous screen shot,

If minSdkVersion is not set in AndroidManifest.xml, it assumes a minimum version of 1. In the SDK version 4(ish?), a few new permissions were added, so if minSdkVersion is below that, those permissions are included whether you need them or not. Read Phone State was among these.
TopShelf10,
I only tested the app on Droid X (my phone) and Evo 4G. Haven't test it on Samsung Galaxy series yet. I noticed button events in the notification view behave differently on Droid X and Evo 4G, so I had to code around it. I guess it's different again on the Galaxy phones. I'll need to get my hands on a Galaxy phone

Sure. As long as you site the source and keep me updated on any findings so I can update my app accordingly.
To be more specific, I think the problem is how button events/intents are handled vs. default intent of the notification content view. I'll try to post some code when I get home.

I think I am really going to like this app. Works great on my rooted Incredible. Any chance you could add an option to hide the icon in the Notification Bar?
Edit: Thought I would mention that I'm running a ROM using the EVO framework. So I couldn't tell ya if it'll work on a stock HTC Incredible.
Well this looks great, just installed it. It doesn't work though. I press on an app, it seems to highlight, then the notification bar just closes.... Any help?

[MOD] Modified TouchWiz launcher

This is a modified version of the Infuse TouchWiz launcher. Thought I would throw this together for you guys since I saw a couple people mention it.
Features:
-5 column app drawer
-Transparent app drawer background
-No colored icon backdrops in the app drawer
-No icon label backgrounds (Galaxy S II style)
-Removed "Press and hold this page to add content" from empty pages
Update (5/18/2011)
-Fixed alphabetical app drawer style only showing 16 icons per page
-Reverted to default fade animation for the app drawer (the new animation was causing odd behavior)
-Made the app drawer background slightly less transparent (so app names are easier to read)
-Removed icon label backgrounds (Galaxy S II style)
Instructions:
Warning: If you're not familiar with adb, you should install another launcher prior to installing this in case something goes wrong.
1. I recommend using Root Explorer for this process, but if you're an experienced user then you can probably think of several other methods.
2. In /system/app, rename TouchWiz30Launcher.apk and TouchWiz30Launcher.odex to TouchWiz30Launcher.apk.bak and TouchWiz30Launcher.odex.bak.
3. Copy this new TouchWiz30Launcher.apk into /system/app.
4. Set permissions of the new TouchWiz30Launcher.apk to rw-r--r--.
5. You may need to reboot, but probably not.
I do this for fun so you shouldn't feel any obligation to donate, but here's a link if you want to. Donations of any amount are very much appreciated.

im on it. you are the best!
edit: done and working! looks way less cheesy than before. now i dont care for the 5icon docks, if i did id use launcher pro. but i was wondering if the 5x5 home screen view from the tab could work? that is not as important as what you already did though. i am super happy about the backdrops being gone and things being a more reasonable size. the icons dont look so offensive on the home screen in 4x4 but i though 5x5 would fit a bit better.
edit: ok one slight visual bug. on the flyin animation the 5 column seems to be doing what the center column should. it is like the 1-4 columns make a semetrical pattern and then the last on one the right just moves on a vertica plane. not sure if you can fix that but im letting you know.
Is there anyway that I can edit it? I want to play with it so that to maybe get some experience.
TwLauncher is unusable for me until A.) it has a 5 icon dock, and B.) I can move the drawer launcher off the far right icon.

can't help you with the 5 icon dock, but i think you can move the drawer launcher by: opening your drawer > menu > view type > customizable grid > menu again > edit > then you can tap and hold to drag around the app icons, including those on the launcher tray
i don't have the device, but those are the steps i saw on a pocketnow video
look in the i9000 section and pull there launchers over. gtg465 has been at this for a while. i requested the 5 icons in thedrawer because it just looked wrong to me. the 5 icon dock with centered app drawer was done a long time ago and con be found in older version of gtg's launcher for 2.2.1.
you may want to look at launcher pro or adw or go launcher but it breaks the samsung widgets if you dont have touch wiz.

what happened? what's a "user in the file" did you somehow wind up without a launcher? you didnt turn the phone off did you? if you long press home do your recent apps pop up?
if you are without a launcher and the phone freezes after the bootanimation but does not bootloop too rapidely there may be hope. you can often still adb into the phone. provided you have the phone set for debugging mode. im not sure the phone is set for debugging in recovery but that would be even better.
pm me with more details ther emay be a few ways to approach this.

Guess you didn't heed my warning in the first post. Here are the adb commands to set permissions:
adb shell
mount /system
chmod 0644 /system/app/TouchWiz30Launcher.apk
exit
adb reboot
If it says permission denied at some point you need to run the su command after adb shell and accept the Superuser prompt on your phone.
edit: Sounds like you figured it out. Good to hear.

Based on the number of downloads of the latest version alone, I would say at least 30 people have tried it and only one has had trouble.
edit: And with this kind of attitiude towards mods I don't see why any devs would want to come over here.

1. Fixed issue where notifications might not show up in DashClock
2. Fixed FC when notification package doesn't have a launch intent
3. Removed the confusing "accept" action bar item. It is visible only when the Notification access is off.
4. Removed proximity sensor check - until completely fixed.
5. Better looking icon selector
6. Added two new icons
7. Ongoing notifications are now shown without count.

The screen turns on when I get a notification, but the notification doesn't show up in dashclock.
Running Android 4.3 on the Nexus 4, and the notification listener service is on plus it's set up right in dashclock I believe.

Similar to AnyDash Pro, and free. Also, this uses the 4.3 Notification service, not the Accessibility service.

Tried it out but the text message didn't show up on the screen. Also the screen turns on regardless if the proximity sensor is covered or not. I'm using chomp sms

I think I phrased it in a confusing manner. By persistent notifications, I meant ongoing/not clearable notifications in the notification area. Like when a music player is playing or USB connected info. I thought that could be useful, so it's in DashNotifier. If you choose and application that has such a notification, it will show up on DashClock as well.
It's not where a notification shows up in DashClock even if there are no pending notifications for the selected application. Hope this clears things out.

Any way to use higher res icons? The built in ones are noticeably smaller and jagged compared to icons such as the DashClock weather.
Otherwise great app!

Best Power Widget App?

I am looking for a great power widget app (need to control wifi, 4g, and auto-rotate at least), or an app/mod that will let me customize quick toggles. It is important to me that it fits the KitKat theme. It would be a plus if it has a torch capability also, as I hate the idea of needing an app just for torch.
Any suggestions?
Thanks as always.

Thats what I am using now but I hate how there is no option to hide the notification icon AND have the toggles be pinned to the top of the notification bar.
I suppose I could use a homescreen widget, but that is much less convenient than notification toggles.
Do you know how I can achieve the notification widget pinned to the top but with not notification icon?
I have had the same disappointment! When I go under apps and uncheck show notifications, I lose the whole app in the pull down menu. For now I'm living with the little gear icon. I don't much like having a widget either...though I've gone back and forth with both. Sorry I can't solve your problem.

HA! Good to know we have had the EXACT same experience.
I had thoughts of creating a 1x1 transparent PNG and using that as the notification icon, but there doesn't appear to be an option to use a custom image here, as there is for the actual toggle icons.
Well, does anyone else care to share their solution?

HD Widgets lets you modify everything just the way you like it.
That's all I've ever used and there is very very very little that I would ever complain about it. . but you can make toggles as clean as you want change the color for when they are not activated and have them change color when they are..make them float with transparent backgrounds, or add some color if you'd like.
I absolutely hate having to install apps for little things like flashlight, wifi, tilt
HD widgets covers all areas

I don't know if you are willing to root and rom this early in the game, but I'm running this rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2518660
It's basically the stock rom, with a few additions, like battery icon, reboot menu, and the ability to change the notification quick settings. Here's mine:
It also has the option to turn on quick pull down for left or right side of the screen.

I'm already rooted and looked at that rom. It does look very nice. I think I am going to wait a bit to use custom Roms though....I'm especially waiting for cm11. If I get sick of stock soon that is definitely the rom I will flash. What are its best features in your opinion?

In 'Power Toggles', you can try going to 'Notification Widget' -> 'Position' -> 'Not pinned & no icon'
It means your toggles will 'float' and not stay pinned to the top of your notifcation drop-down, but does omit the icon at the top.
Give it a try!
Power toggles - no icon
Seems to work if you click "Not pinned and no icon"
Scratch everything.. Notification Toggle takes the cake for me... You have the ability to set up all your toggles.. And even shortcuts to apps.. You can add more toggles per line the 4... most importantly no bar icon
Here is my setup

Honestly, I like it because it doesn't have many features. The more features, the more likely things won't work exactly right. I really wanted a pure Google experience, but there's a few things that it's missing.
Top things in Cataclysm ROM for me are editable notification toggles, reboot power menu, circle battery, show am/pm for clock, and lockscreen slider shortcuts. I know CM has all that and more, and I will definitely try CM when it's released, but this is great for now, and it has a stock feeling. Also no hiccups on it yet.

This doesn't do anything more than Power Toggles already does. Choosing the notification priority on that app still makes it so it isn't pinned to the top when a new notification comes in. Just like power toggles when you select no pin & no icon. It's still a solid app, but I think Power Toggles is better.
I may eventually install CM or Omni so you can customize the quick settings, and be able to swipe the right side to pull down the quick settings faster. Also, I like the ability to turn on the flashlight from the lock screen by holding the home button.

[APP] Fingerprint Scanner Tools - Tasker support!

Hello friends!
I developed an App called Fingerprint Scanner Actions, because I never understood why I could use my fingerprint scanner only for unlocking my device or other security reasons.
I mean, this is an additional button... it should be used like one.

Fingerprint Scanner Tools is an Android App that makes it possible to execute certain actions when you touch your fingerprint scanner and your device is unlocked.
This App is available from Android 6.0 (Marshmallow)
Famous actions that can be executed:
Open app-shortcut
Execute a Tasker task
Toggle the quick settings/notification panel
Launch the default camera app
Start the flashlight
Launch a certain app
Turn off the screen (3 different methods)
Take a screenshot
Swipe actions:
Same as above
Learn how to create custom fingerprint actions with tasker - you will be able to do ANYTHING possible in our big and wide android world.
My friend Mat from NotEnoughTech created an awesome tutorial how to do that. Have fun!

Q&A:
Q: Why is my notification bar expanding so slow?
A: This is a bug in Android 6.0. Please try this workaround:
Enable developer options
In Developer Options go to "Animator duration scale" and set it to 0.2x (you can set it also to 0, then it is going down super fast)
Lock and unlock your device for it to take effect
Q: Why am I unable to unlock my device with my fingerprint after locking it with the action "Screen off" and "DeviceAdmin"?
A: Please use another screen off method, you can choose it in the app. Android prevents us to unlock the device with the fingerprint when it has been locked with the so called DevicePolicyManager. They said that they don't want this feature to be misused.

If you are able to add some special features it would be awesome. On my Honor 5x there is this feature with stock Rom, as I am running CM 13 now, I really miss it:
Show notification panel - Slide down on the fingerprint sensor to display the notification panel, double-touch to clear the panel, and slide up to close the panel.
Is this somehow doable?

Yes, just choose "launch camera" as the action.
@Flextrick
The App works good, thx.
I have two suggestions:
1. Probably most of the users - like me also - , just want to see the notification Panel to check for Messages received.
Currently there is only the Option in your app to expand it completely to open the quick Settings menu. Maybe you can add in your next Version just the option to open the notification Panel?
2. The Speed of the downmoving notification Panel / quick Settings menu when use it with Fingerprint and your app, is very slow compared to when used it with regular downsliding on the Display front.
Is there a way to fix this also?

2. Can't image why this should happen, I only send the request to Android, so there must be something wrong in CM13. I have Stock Android 7.0 and it works like a charm.

Amazing Support! Thank you very much! Looking Forward to the new Version.
I know now why it is so slow, I researched a bit about it.
It is a bug in the Android 6.0 System Framework.
For all having the Problem with the slow downmoving statusbar, here is a solution to fix it:

3. Lock and unlock your device for it to take effect

Thanks, I added this hint to the q&a section in the start post.

Locking and unlocking the screen seems to fix the issue every time this happens
