[Q] SD Card gets mounted as Read Only! - General Questions and Answers

Hi folks
I have a 4gb sandisk sd card
I had a 512 mb ext3 partition and a 128 mb Swap partition
One day it suddenly became "read only"
I can access all files but can't add new.
Can't click pics etc..
I tried formatting via PC
My pc showed an empty disk but when I put the sd card back in all the files were back :/
I have tried DoD 7 passes wipe using MiniTool, unpartitioning the sd card, reformat, changing file system, everything!
But the sd card returns to its original state when I put it back on my phone :/
I've tried it on 3 different androids and a Java based phone.. I own a windows 8 32 bit PC.. with all drivers properly installed and USB slots fully functional.
Any help will be appreciated ASAP

i must be handicapped!
for some reason i can not partition my SD card correctly. i am using clockwork mod recovery 5.0.2.0. i go in partition the SD card for 512mb 0 swap. format the /sd-ext. everything is all good from this point.
my problem is the rest of the SD card is not formatted.
so like a retard i stick the SD card into my windows 7 laptop and format it so i can put the rom on to flash. when i do this i loose the 512mb ext partition it made on the SD card.
what am i doing wrong?
is there a better way to format the remaining space of the SD card without loosing the 512mb ext partition? so i can put the rom on the SD to flash the rom.
Format SD card to fat32 then partition your card in cwm. That's all you have to do

afterwards
the how to do i get the rom to the SD card? because if i stick the sd card back into windows laptop it wants to format the card again and wrecks the SD partition.
is there another way to push a rom from laptop to the phone by USB?
After you format the SD Card in Recovery, choose mounts and storage. Then choose USB Mount. After that load the backup of the SD Card back onto the card. If you don't have the Rom in your backup, load it then.
oh okay sorry i didn't understand you clearly but i'd do what prboy said
easy
much easier. i have been doing it the hard way all this time.
thanks both of you for the help.
So then you got it sorted out?
I don't think Windows can recognize/format an ext partition as it's a Linux file system. I had to set up my ext partition yesterday and Windows 7 only read the left over space when I mounted it through the phone and a card reader(14gb card read as 13gb). Should be good to format it when you plug it in.

[H] Problem after SD card partitioning

Hello xda !
I've got a 16GB class 4 sdcard.
Recently I tried to partition my sdcard using Mini Tool Partition Wizard on windows.
I wanted to get a 1.4GB ext2 partition to do App2sd, and keeping the whole 13.5 left in FAT32 for UMS (Mass Storage).
It wasn't working, I think it was because I was doing it by a USB connection through my phone. I tried it at least 4 times, each time I was able to reformat the whole card in FAT32, so no major problem.
BUT now, I don't know why but my sdcard isn't recognized anywhere, is tried though MOTOROLA DEFY, SAMSUNG GALAXY PLAYER WIFI 4.0 and MICROSD COMPUTER ADAPTER. Even in Mini Tool Partition Wizard, I can't see it.
SO is there a way for me to recover my sdcard ?
If someone could help me it would be awesome guys

HTC butterfly (can't copy file larger than 4GB to sd card)

Hi Guys,
Can I get help on how to copy a file larger than 4GB to SD card? I tried to read up and try a lot of stuff but still really lost here. I'm on Virtuous rom.
- I tried to format my card in ext4 but the phone don't recognized it. (I read stock rom don't support ex4)
- I tried to format the card in the device but it didn't work. (I think the phone format the card to FAT32 but not sure as windows just say "generic hierarchical" file system).
- I tried to format the card in NTFS and the phone didn't recognized it.
- Tried to format the card in FAT32 and can't copy the 5gb file because of the 4GB limitation.
- I tried to format my card in exfat but phone don't recognized ( I read that stock kernal don't support exfat).
I think you can only have your card formatted as FAT32 for the phone to recognize it. 4GB is a limitation of FAT32. So that's it, you're stuck with that limit.

It sucks when alot of devices depend on fat32.

P6810: problem with SDHC card 32 GB

Hi, i have aproblem with my Micro SDHC Card (32 GB San Disk Ultra). I use it with my my tablet (p6810) but very often is unable to read the card or i can't move the files from internal storage to SD. Yesterday i've tried to format the card with my PC (filesystem FAT32) in order to verify if it works. The format has been completed with success.
After the format the tablet doesn't read it anymore and that is the same with my home and office computers. What can i do now?
Do you think that the tablet doesn't support this card?
Go to device settings > storage and if the EXTERNAL SdCard is detected, format it.

All data vanished off sd card, shows as all free space now. advice?

Hi folks, well I have a 32 gig external sd card that I recently loaded several gigs of music onto for a road-trip I have to take in 3 days.
Tonight I went to copy some files from the internal sd (not the 32 gig external) onto my computer, and it behaved strangely, so I powered the phone off to try again. Once the phone rebooted, both the 5 gig internal sd, and the 32 gig external sd cards report as being empty with all free space available, everything is gone.
I can't run recovery software from windows on the card , because when I mount the card it appears in windows as a portable media device, not a hard disk, so no recovery software recognizes it.
Anyone have any advice as to what I might try, in order to recover my music directories? I'm thinking I might be out of luck.
Thanks in advance

Who is the manufacturer of the card? Is it generic? This is an issue with cheap SD cards. Sounds like it needs to be formatted. Most likely your data is lost. Sorry.
I put the sd card in my older motorola atrix that I just recently retired from service use, booted the atrix to clockworkmod, from there mounted usb storage, and windows did assign the sd card a drive letter - I was able to run a data recovery program (easeus data recovery) and in about an hour recovered all my music to my laptop. Some of its in lost directories etc, but mostly the original folder structure is intact - in any case i've got my music back for my road-trip.
Why the newer lg ultimate 2 i'm now using only mounts the sd card as a portable media device, I don't know, and for the moment it doesn't matter.
thanks evolution
This had me thinking: if I was able to remove the sd card from the lg phone, and put it into the atrix phone, and recover/access the data - then what if for instance, you lost your phone, someone found it and put the sd card into another device/reader, and you had a titanium backup on that sd card- they restored the backup of some of your programs (complete with data)
wouldn't they then have access to some very private information of yours?
