[Q] Has your phone ever slept through a text message, call or other notification? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On occasions when the phone is sleeping, it will not alert me of a text message until I've turned the screen on. No LED is flashed and often the alert sound is delayed until the phone is woken as well. Looking at the battery graph there will be no "awake" line during that period though the message will have a properly aged time stamp. Now I think the same thing happened with a missed voice call which is quite disconcerting.
I wonder how many people are experiencing this and might think the LED notification is not working properly, which is a common complaint. I've tried clearing the cache for Hangouts and Dialer and am waiting to see results but this was not happening on a consistent basis.

I got this several times now with WhatsApp but only noticed with one contact (not using Whatsapp very often).
It occurs to me it has something to do with the phone going to sleep but I am not sure.
I don't have whatsapp greenified but turned off "Keep Awake" in AppOps, maybe this was causing the issue. Turned it off now and now I have to wait for someone texting me

I'm stock unrooted, unless it's a glitch with my network then I think it would be an Android bug.
Normally I'd notice this when I woke up and checked my phone, but one time in particular I was having a text conversation with someone expecting a reply back. I turned off the screen. 20mins later I turn the screen on and the message arrives at that moment however the time stamp indicated it was from 15 minutes earlier.

What's the sleep time that you set in display options under settings?

I've always had it at 1 minute time out. Do you think that might be related to the notifications?
I've noticed it happening a lot today. It seems the message might get through eventually just with varried degrees of delay. I would try a phone reset but I don't think it's going to help.

Make sleep time after 10 minutes and observe your device!
I guess this will solve out the issue
It's because of proximity sensor which dims out the display on your nexus

Light flow problems

So a while ago I saw a forum post about light flow actually draining battery like crazy. Im just here to ask if it still has a tendency to do this? and also is there a way to customize it so every time I get a text message my screen does not turn on? I did some searching on google and apparently a lot of peoples screens turn on when getting a text message.

Unfortunately there are still a bunch of problems with lightflow that need to be worked out on the US versions of the S3 ( like our Verizon version). I to have the problem where the screen turns on when I get a text. As far as battery drain under battery usage it only shows 3-4% of the battery usage.
Take a look at this post from the makers of light flow on their progress for the US versions:

The screen turning on is a Samsung messenger thing. Always happens sadly. You can however use handcent SMS. You can also control if the screen turns on or not when receiving a text, currently its the only third party messenger that works with our phone led..

[Q] Nexus 4 WiFi during sleep setting broken?

I have data completely disabled. Yet no matter the condition of the "Keep WiFi on during Sleep" setting, the WiFi stays on because I can continue to receive messages (IMs not SMS) although delayed by several minutes to the delayed notification bug. Even when it is set to "Never".
Can someone test this and tell me if this is how its supposed to be? Is there a background app/service thats preventing the WiFi from going to sleep?
(In order to test, I used another device to send a whatsapp message to the main device, and it always delivered successfully after about 5 mins of sending).
Thanks

I did see them. They are also to do with WiFi issues but slightly different. This is pretty much the opposite problem (WiFi NOT sleeping when screen is off). I'm having both issues at once. So it sort of drifts in and out of sleep irrespective of any settings I can change

Notification LED ... working properly?

Hi everybody,
got a brand new Nexus 5 from thuesday and so far I'm happy with it... There's just a thing that makes me angry; it seems to me that the notification LED is not working properly, or maybe I did not understand which are the roles which determine WHEN it should light or not.
Example: I set in Whatsapp configuration that notifications should use the LED (in particular, I also set the green color for these notifications).
Sometimes Whatsapp messages leads to a blinking led (when the screen is dark, so, in standby). This is what I expected to see everytime there's an unread Whatsapp message.
But... it happens sometimes that a received, unread whatsapp message doesn't trigger any LED activity.
Just 20 mins ago, I heard from my Nexus 5 a notification sound (an incoming Whatsapp message)... but no led activity at all.
Few mins ago I received another Whatsapp message, and this time I heard the sound and can see the green led blinking.
So... It's possible I didn't understand the correct behaviour of these LED notifications... or maybe it's a known bug and others have noticed the same issue.
Does anyone found a similar behaviour ? It seems to me it's a matter of software, because *when* the LED blinks, it blinks without any defect.
Thanks
I'm having the opposite issue from you. Sometimes the Notification LED gets stuck blinking, even after all notifications on my phone have been cleared.
This is happening on my phone, as well as the two others I purchased.
Mine seems fine so far
No issues here either. I have Handscent controlling the LED for SMS/MMS. And I let Android decide what to do for Gmail and Exchange LEDs. If you want full control you can probably download one of the LED apps and let that control all your LED settings for each app.
I'm having the same issue. Sometimes the notification light decides not to blink... I have no idea why this happens though. Just wanted to chime in that you're not alone.
Get light flow, the LED is a lot more useful with that app.

I'm rooted and using light flow and after I've turned it on, read the notification and then switched it off I also sometimes get the light blink continuously until I open up light flow and it's again obtained root access. On the N4 it just requested root at startup and then never had to again but doesn't seem to till I've opened the app on the N5. Maybe it's a 4.4 bug.
No LED earlier when i received a Tapatalk notification. I don't know if that's the phone or the app at fault? Otherwise i seem to get LED notification in most cases.
Okie, so it seems that notification issues are quite common... I'm tempted to buy light flow just to verify it's not an hardware fault which requires RMA.... (I'm actually for the software fault ...which isn't tracked yet)

Lightflow works perfectly for me.

I can confirm ^. Just got the paid version of Light Flow, works like a charm so far. Lets you change LED colours. Really awesome app. SO far i tested it for missed call(red blink)/hangout MMS(purple)/gmail e-mail and hotmail e-mail (green). Its been working flawlessly so far. The stock LED function did work for my hangout text messages, however it would not work my my e-mail. With light flow everything is working perfectly now + the extra functionality that it comes with.
LightFlow is definitely a worthwhile investment. The developer is quite active on XDA as well, and is quick to reply to any feedback. The app works as advertised (had it for my N4 and now N5) and provides great functionality. For me, the LED notification was a key selling feature. I hated having to turn the screen on my previous phones to see if I even had any notifications, but now I can glance at my phone and know if I have a text, e-mail, missed call, etc. So having absolute control over the LED is awesome.
For my N5 I have had some occasions when the LED would act a bit on its own, whether it would pulse white for a second or two randomly, or not turn on when it was supposed to. It's rare when it happens and is really a non-issue. Where I haven't had much success, though, is testing the LED when I'm setting up notifications in LightFlow. Doing LED tests in LightFlow doesn't seem to work for some reason. Not sure if I'm the only one experiencing this or not.
Is there any specific configuration setting for lightflow on Nexus5 or it should work out of the box?

Should work straight out of the box Although it may involve some playing around, and also make sure notifications in the apps themselves are turned off or you'll essentially have two going off at once (one for the app, one for LightFlow).
The dev just posted a helpful link that I used to get testing the LED to work, and also would help configure LightFlow for your N5 too:

I'm not rooted but I remembered using an app called missed call with the og droid and it works perfectly on the nexus 5. Free too!

I'm a noobi. I just received my Nexus 5 yesterday evening. When the phone goes into SLEEP mode, whether flip cover closed or just after a while in idle, the notification light keeps blinking, Is this normal? Does LightFlow have a setting to not blink when in SLEEP mode?

I installed LightFlow and tried to stop the blinking light in sleep mode. I enabled LightFlow and enabled sleep settings and checked the box for Stop the notification light when sleeping. The notification light still blinks when the NFC tag is triggered or when the phone times out for sleep. Please advise.

Not getting notification until I wake from deep sleep/ doze ?

I just got this phone.
So every morning I wake up my phone and then a sudden spam of notification comes up. (Whatsapp).
Although the message was sent at like 8 am. I only get the notification when I wake up the phone.
I tired putting the app not to be "Optimize battery usage" and is still occurs.
I believe this is cause by the deep sleep/ doze feature?
I came from LG G3. It had MM with the same feature. But It doesnt have this bug at all.
Any idea?

My experience with doze on the note 5 mm is even if you have WiFi power save off doze still kills it. It seems to be a bug with doze. My screen is off then when I turn it on all my emails come thru (I'm using bluemail). I have seen others commenting on the exact same thing.

I have the same problem

I did a few factory reset but the problem still occurs.
I simply did a wipe cache partition. (Just google note 5 wipe cache if you don't know how to do it)
And it seem to have fix the problem.
I also play around with the other settings but they don't seem to be the culprit.

display staying on

Ok so have noticed another issue with my phone that I can't say happens every time but more often than I would like and enough for me to notice.
It seems that when my phone gets a notification be it a Google notification (weather/news etc) or email or face book etc my screen wakes up (which is fine by me) but then stays illuminated. It stays this way until I read/swipe it away.
This is more noticeable at night when it's on charge and I happen to wake and find the screen is illuminated still.
I have checked and the option to "wake screen when notification comes in " is switched off so it's not this.
Anyone else have an issue like this/noticed this?
Yes, I have exactly the same issue. It consistently does this when charging, and unplugging the charger allows the lock screen to fade out, as it should always do.
Haven't had this issue on my device & I can't seem to replicate it, but hopefully it's fixed with the August update as a saw a few users have reported this to the ColorOS community
I have this issue, very annoying. Any fix?
Skickat från min CPH2025 via Tapatalk
Someone reported that it's related to the Google Clock app. It is annoying and I've also reported this to the Color OS community. Several times I've woken up to find my screen on and if my device suffers screen burn-in because of this, I shall be making a warranty claim due to a software issue and being not fit for purpose! I am not in a position to uninstall G Clock as I rely on it for several assistant routines associated with my alarm. This issue needs to be fixed, along with several others!
