Screen keeps turning off - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought a Galaxy Note Pro, and have a weird issue. The screen keeps turning off (just like if I had pressed the power button) for no apparent reason. Has anyone else else encountered this?
I have an inkling that it may be due to false detection of my book cover closing, but I cannot find a way to turn this detection off.

Some book covers will trigger magnet sensor when the cover is flipped to the back of the tablet. There's no way that I know of to turn off the feature entirely.

Yeah, I have that issue, mainly caused when the cover is folded back and I lie the tablet flat.

Isn't that the way you're supposed to use the book covers? It would seem that this is a huge design flaw.
edit: "Good" to hear that I'm not the only one with this problem. Not so great if there is no fix for it, though.

So which book cover is doing this? My WAWO Smart Fold Shell (which is also sold under various other brand names) does not exhibit this behavior.

if you are rooted i believe there is an xposed module which will turn this feature off. and also under general, accessary settings- i believe there is a setting..

I haven't rooted it, and I'd rather not. There are some settings under General -> Accessory that pertain to book covers, but nothing like disabling the detection.

These are the available settings.

FWIW I tried the Xposed module called MagnetOff (currently version 1.6 dated 3/12/2014) and disabling magnet has no effect on smartcover usage on the 12.2 .
I don't see magnet settings in Wanam so I'm not sure what other module to try.
I'm just thankful that I don't have this issue with my case.

Has anyone tried to physically remove the magnet from a book cover? I think I may have identified where the magnet that is used for detection is located, but I'm sort of apprehensive about trying to dig it out without destroying the cover.

I had a Note 10 2014 for testing some weeks ago, basically the same cover for it without any problems (Ivso slim cover), so I basically wonder what problem the Note 12.2 actually has with the cover.
In your case, does it coincide with your hardware buttons (menu, middle, menu button) not being responsive anymore? Once I remove the case from the lower back a bit, they are working again.
Thanks in advance

Yes, sometimes they stop working, but I don't think it always happens.

I realized its the book cover from samsung too. When its laid flat its cause lots of problem the screen will turn off and the tablet will remain unresponsive even if u turn the screen back on with power button. Haiz alot of problems encountered just in a week of using this tablet. Spent quite an amount of money on this device but its giving me so much trouble. After I realized its the book cover. I never laid it flat with the flap behind the tablet anymore. But when I using it in a "stand-mode" while watching a youtube video it happened again I downloaded apps that keep screens on, but they aren't working either. The screen will randomly turn off when I am watching the videos.

I too have the same issue. I try using it without the case for a bit to see how it does but without the case I feel pretty nervous using it.

It's unfortunate that a Samsung branded case is causing the issue. The generic case that I'm using doesn't do these things.

It does appear to be the Samsung case. I've been using my Logitech case for the past couple hours and I cannot get the screen to turn off on its own at all. A quick change back to the Samsung case and within 2 minutes the screen went blank.
VERY pathetic Samsung.

Worst part is, I almost took the Pro back due to it just shutting off or becoming unresponsive. I've had zero issues since changing cases, but when I put the Samsung case back on all the issues come back. I have 2 cheap cases with the magnets in them and neither gives my Note issues.

VZW Screen Locking

Anyone else having issues with screen locking with the VZW version? Even when I push the power button at the top my screen comes back on in the holster.
Apparently (a Sprint owner can confirm) the Sprint version has "long press end key" built in to lock the device. I noticed that if I locked the device while using TFLO3D it would somehow get unlocked without me manually doing it.
Anyone else having same issue?
I am installing S2U2 now ... will report back
Also I downloaded LockMeLite
I have the VZW TP2 and have had the same problem, usually when I would slide it into my side pouch. It's annoying.
I would rather have it lock automatically then unlock. I think there might be something built in to it that if the proximity sensor and buttons are pressed that it auto locks. Even though at times I get annoyed that I have to unlock it, I would rather that happen then pocket dial someone...
i have not confirmed this but i think that if u have a magnetic holster, than the magnet is active like the switch that turns ur phone from portraight to landscape when u slide out the keyboard. when u put the phone in the case it passes the magnet and thinks that u just opened the keyboard
@joeyc
I have seen blackberries and model-specific holsters which do that, but I believe something else here is to blame. I have noticed this issue in my pocket, and unless parts of my anatomy are magnetic, I would have to assume something else is going on.

Yeah it does change the orientation of the screen as well so you could be right.

Yep, i was shoving it into a Blackberry holster. (until my orderd one gets here)..lol...so yeah, something definitely is going on.
i could just wave my phone infront of my case and the screen will turn on along with the orientation changing
So, is this specific to BB case which use to magnet to turn off screen when holstered (very smart), or is this an issue with all magnetic closure cases???
I haven't even found a TP2 CDMA belt case without a magnetic closure.
its an issue with all magnetic cases
From looking at other forums like ppcgeeks and others it appears that most everyone is using something like S2U2
With S2U2 installed I have no issues with my magnetic case

S2U2 it is!
question for all of you people who have recently started using S2U2...have u noticed a significant dranage in memory or battery..the reason im asking this is bc ive always used S2U2 so i havent had a chance to notice...im trying to find ways to extend my battery life bc its horrible on the newer devices
Just make sure every option in S2U2 is turned off.
Don't enable any of the options or features. Use it purely as a lock tool.
thats really all i use it as...i dont use the caller id,appts,s2p, or anything like that...will that help to increase my battery life and memory??? also, is there any other way to increase my battery life????
Is there anyway to default to S2U2 for the lock instead of the one that's on there now?
Magnetic Cases is the problem
I first had this issue on the 6800 and it turned out to be the magnetic case. The phone has a sensor looking for a change in a magnetic field- this happens every time you take out your stylus, and so the screen turns on.
The light-powered magnet used for keeping the leather hip cases closed interferes with the sensors on the phone and cause some odd, undesirable results... I prefer to play it safe and stay away from anything magnetic on a phone this complex.
Just my 2 cents...
as far as cases themselves go, i had issues like all have described in finding the right case that wouldn't do this. The HTC branded case has more room within its pouch so it doesn't effect the screen or buttons, it's magnetic and works fine. Just figured i'd lend an alternate solution besides hardware tweeks. hope this helps

Screen turns off when the flip cover opens full

Hello,
i bought a flip cover for my Galaxy Note 8.0.
When i open it, the screen goes on as expected. However when is turned all the way to the back of the Note, the screen goes off!
It seems that also the back camera has a sensor and understands when i do this the screen should turn off.
Any suggestions to fix this?
is this and official case? if not then i'd suspect either you have one with too strong a magnet, an unshielded magnet or both.

hello,
no it is not the official case, so probably this is what you indicated.
Is there a way to stop the tablet from recognizing the case totally?
so far the only way is to cut out the magnet until someone figures out how to disable it. you'll most likely need root to do so.

thanks, any idea where exactly is this magnet?
i believe it's inside near where the case meets the edge of the device. run a magnet around it to verify the exact spot.

A bulge/bump on the back cover

Hi guys,
I got my nexus 5 a while ago and notice theres a bulge on the back cover right under the camera, i emailed google and got a replacement but it has the same bulge.
Will it cause any issue? The bulge is on top of the vibration motor.
I googled it and found some others having the same issue but nothing else about it.
Attaching the picture of it.

since you googled about it and found others but nothing else about it.. tell me, is it really an "issue"? i did check mine regardless, and dont have a bulge.
Even I checked mine and it doesn't have any bulge whatsoever.
Isn't there a clip there? Push down on it and it might click into place. Maybe it just wasn't installed correctly from factory.

hmm... so its a rare case... and i have 2 of them...
I too think its a plastic defect, when i shine it on the light, it looks like a patch on the cover.
but its right on top of the vibration motor, so i wonder if anyone know will that cause an issue or not
edit: lol.. just did some test, the vibration motor is loose.... another RMA..

open up the case and check if the lock is properly locked in, there is a lock on the place you mentioned, I've had the issue and i opened up and found it was not closed properly (ironically by the service center guys) and i closed it back on. Check if the vibrator works all the time or only when you press down on the bulge(if it does it's not a huge issue).
Guys don't waste time RMA'ing, just a simple fixable problem which anyone can do if you want to know more about your device and it is a bit of a learning also.

[Q] I can unlock my Nexus 5 through my jeans

So I got my Nexus 5 about 2-3 months ago. I must say it's the best phone I ever had, and i had them all from HTC to Samsung to Xiaomi etc. Nothing compares to Nexus.
Anyway, I found the first thing I don't like about it.
A few weeks ago kept noticing my phone pocket dials, so I enabled pattern lock. No more issues.
After that, yesterday, I was very curious if I am the only one with this issue. So my friend has a G2, which is pretty similar from what I understands.
If I wake the screen, put my phone in my pcket and try to unlock it over the clothes, I can do it super easy.
However, the G2 does not reach to this and my friend doesn't need a pattern unlock.
Is there a way this can be fixed so i don't have to use pattern? I don't like it. Thank you!
This never happend to me. In fact, I don't think it's possible due the fact the touchscreen only registers 'heat' touches(like your fingers).
Try to put a bit of your jeans over your fingers and try to see if the touchscreen responds.
Or you can set-up a harder pin/pattern lock.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Maybe not a proper solution but I have a Nillkin case on mine. Its fairly thin so doesn't make the phone bulky but the buttons are now slightly recessed so I don't push them by mistake. I don't use a screen lock at all most of the time.
I have the same problem, and I also opened the topic here about it a while ago.
I also set up a pattern for unlocking, and it somewhat helps. However, sometimes I see that emergency call dialer is opened when I pick up a phone from my pocket, so the problem still persist. Weird though, I never had similar problems with other touch phones that I had.
Some roms like CM do have an option to prevent accidental wakeups. It uses the proximity sensor to check if the phone is placed in the pocket.
I had the same problem,
To prevent this, I made a tasker pofile I can send you.
It checks if the proximity sensor detects anything on unlock, then relocks the phone immediately and vibrates for a second to let know something happened.
Never had any unwanted unlocks since

The digitiser registers electrical disturbances in its field. This can be caused by any part of the human body no matter what temperature.
It can even be done through thin fabrics. Maybe OP has jeans with very thin inside pockets.
Anyway, there is no way you could easily restrict the distance the field can "project" from the digitiser.

Allright, so i just used my covers, which aren't very thin, and i managed to unlock my phone using screen pattern lol. I just had to press just a little harder and it registered the touch. Weird. I don't mind using the pattern unlock but still ..
I will try that, i was thinking about a case which makes it a lil harder to wake the screen. Thx !
Maybe there's a hole in your pocket and your penis is doing some slide to wake action! ?

I don't wear tight pants, I notice this mostly while cycling body temperature and humidity probably play a role
I had this issue with my S3. I think pin or pattern lock are the only way, but it hits your emergency dialer, too. Hopefully, that tasker profile going to the prox sensor too will work. I don't think there is a way around this as the screens are sensitive. I usually have mine in my jacket pocket, but when I use my pants I can come across things like this. Not really sure we can know why, can't be in the pocket at the same time.
Could be a dodgy power button, I'm going a through a similar process where minimal pressure on the button makes it turn the screen off, hard resets or the power menu appears. I don't want to RMA because I'll only get a refurb which could have more serious issues.

[Q] phone screen on when opening case

I've got myself a galaxy s6 after many happy years with a nexus 5. The one feature I really miss is the screen of the nexus would wake when you opened the flip case, no button pressing necessary. Is it possible to get this feature on the s6?

I must be missing a setting then as mine doesn't. I need to press the side or centre button.
I'm using a snugg case. Tried all the settings, still have to open the case then press power or centre button. Could you tell me what case you have?
The case needs a magnet to let the s6 recognize that it has to turn the display on or off.

He is probably referring to Samsung's official Flip Cover cases. They all turn off the screen when closed, and turn on the screen when opened. Not sure about third party cases though, you'll have to check the specs to see if they support such a feature. Usually there is a specially placed magnet on the case that triggers the screen on/off action.
Thanks for the help, I see now I should have gone for a case that specified auto wake/sleep feature.
I've still not found a leather type wallet case with smart lock/wake. Has anyone got one, can post a link. Don't want the s view case as they seem very flimsy.

Not only a magnet. I've an unofficial cover with the two magnets just like the official one. But the official has a NFC tag too. So without root and a proper fix, unofficial cover doesn't work.
I'm waiting for some custom rom to do it...
