[Q] How to monitor app network activity? - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I apparently have an app on my Note Pro (I'm guessing one of the bundled Samsung apps) that once a minute is doing a hardwired DNS lookup to the google DNS servers. How can I track down which one it is?
From my router, I can see it happen, and see the local port number on the Note Pro, but the port number is changing each time (not surprising since it is a UDP request.) Any Android app I can install that monitors an app's network activity?
Thanks!

You could use a firewall security app that lets you disable an apps access to the Internet and go through 1 by 1

Silly me - didn't even think to look for Android firewall apps, just monitors. Looks like there is a selection to choose from, including some non-root ones. Thanks!

Go to proxpn.com for $10 USD a month you can download their android app. No need for root. They have several vpn server locations such as x2 Usa, Uk Singapore and included is PC usage as well. Apparently it is no problems watching geolocation locked online tv

Don't bother with the Android app if you just need it temporary (Certainly don't bother with the windows client).
If you download the Windows Client exe you can open it with 7zip and get the openvpn config files (Attached to this post).
Which you can then use with :
https://proxpn.org/createaccount.php
And then just fill in the required items.
It says allot about the company that they don't even use a different certificate and key for each user.
(Or provide L2TP)
For 7$ a month you can get a really good VPS in the US.
(See lowendbox.com)
Then just set it up yourself. (Anything you want L2TP/IPSEC / Openvpn or PPTP).
You can find a tutorial to set this up for pretty much any Linux distro. (In a better manner than the god awful way they configure this).

WARNING - Camera360 Security Risk

The latest Camera360 update demands a strange and dangerous permission - "Change WiFi State". This is defined as follows:
"Allows the app to connect to and disconnect from Wi-Fi access points, and to make changes to configured Wi-Fi networks."
The apps already has internet access. But change WiFi state means it can not only turn your WiFi on and off, but it can add or delete to your access points, and read/change other information like encrypted passwords.
I emailed the developer (in China) and they just keep emailing me back asking what version I am using. He obviously doesn't want to answer the question!
I've noticed this "permission creep" in many other apps. The latest Firefox Android app wants access to global system setting, address book, and accounts. The latest YouTube app can take pictures and videos without your knowledge.
There are a few apps that I no longer update. I also use DroidWall to block cameras and other apps from internet access.
Stay Away from Camera360!
I use droidwall as well, actually extensively. I block everything but the necessities.

Thanks for the heads up.

Now that look at it, some of the permissions that Camera360's Chinese developers want are pretty scary:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vStudio.Android.Camera360
Here are the most dangerous as of today:
NETWORK COMMUNICATION
FULL INTERNET ACCESS
Allows the app to create network sockets.
YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION
READ SENSITIVE LOG DATA
Allows the app to read from the system's various log files. This allows it to discover general information about what you are doing with the tablet, potentially including personal or private information. Allows the app to read from the system's various log files. This allows it to discover general information about what you are doing with the phone, potentially including personal or private information.
PHONE CALLS
READ PHONE STATE AND IDENTITY
Allows the app to access the phone features of the device. An app with this permission can determine the phone number and serial number of this phone, whether a call is active, the number that call is connected to and the like.
SYSTEM TOOLS
RETRIEVE RUNNING APPS
Allows the app to retrieve information about currently and recently running tasks. Malicious apps may discover private information about other apps.
CHANGE WI-FI STATE
Allows the app to connect to and disconnect from Wi-Fi access points, and to make changes to configured Wi-Fi networks.
Camera 360 Browser Popups!
The Chinese developers that made Camera 360 removed the draconian permissions. But now, it has a more evil behavior. When you start your phone, Camera 360 starts a background process that displays popup ads on some websites with the default Android browser!
Thread on it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33130018
Uninstall Camera 360 and watch your phone and your browser run faster!
Uninstalled :good:
Shouldn't this thread be a sticky, and, posted somewhere owners of all different models of phones will see?
Also, surely there must be some kind of app which lets you install apps without actually granting them those permissions? Some kind of permission stripper?
I'm not sure of any apps that control permissions directly but the is one called DroidWall which can block apps from communication over WiFi and/or your mobile network. Needs superuser/root access.

Pdroid, need to make a patch for ROM of choice, but it works like a charm!

I have DroidWall, and Camera360 is blocked internet access. But it is still able to hook into the Android browser and show popups.
Not sure how that happens. You can try downloading AdAway from the market and see if that gets red of it.

Which Anti-Theft app do you guys use?

As far as i know all the current anti-theft apps need 3g, as their protection system is based on SMS and need internet access to locate the device.
Is there any other app that overcomes this limitation that I am unware of?

Cerberus needs only wifi. You can log in to the homepage to trace the device.
I use it on my tf300 and it work just fine.
If you get Cerberus you can have up to 3 devices on one user, i think. I have 2 devices.

Okay so is an internet connection still required to trace the device?
EDIT: seems the device will mail its location if connected to the internet, also cerberus will automatically try to connect to open wifi networks nearby

Yes you need Internet. And as you found out, the App will send an email or you can trace it live from their Web site.

[Q] looking for advanced android firewall

Hi,
currently I am using Android Firewall on CM10.2.
Nice app but I am missing some pro features.
Is there any Firewall for Android available where I can restrict app's network traffic to special IPs or domain names?
Example:
An app (eg. contact sync app) should be allowed do communicate with an owncloud server. Access to other destionations should be blocked. The feature for deciding that an app should only be able to communicate via wifi is also needed. (thats working fine in android firewall).
Do you know such a firewall app? If it is open source it would be perfect.
Regards,
Butch

+1. The best would be a Popup with "App XYz want to connect to tracking.google.com . Do you want Allow temporary, Allow Always, Allow All Connections, Deny ALL, DENY this IP"
Since i am changed from Iphone to Android i am missing 'Firewall IP’ (jailbreak) from my iphone

If your phone is rooted, it is easy possible, for example firewall in official play store Avast Mobile Security. No possibility without root.

You can still do it without root privileges.
Use LostNet Firewall.
It creates a fake VPN connection which intercepts all traffic and filters it based on your rules.
It allows to block some apps while on mobile.
You can also block some apps at all times.
You can block access to any country.
New features are released every week.
The next release will have 3 new ways of blocking networking traffic.
You can also use Mobiwol. Is free from Google Play and it also uses the VPN features to block and allow apps based on what you tell it to do. It also blocks Foreground and Background apps as well.
