Would you buy the Samsung S5 ? - General Topics

Hi guys, I have an S3 and been waiting for a nice upgrade, Do you think the S5 would be a good choice? or should I wait for the HTC?
I wish that the new S5 was metal, I hate the cheap feel of the plastic housing though.

Why is that ? It feels so cheap.

try to use or buy another device such as sony like that

I'm unsure if I'll buy the S5, the G3 or the new One, but I like Galaxy S phones for their physical home button, special features like eye tracking, the customization which is great here on XDA, and of course the top specs.
The One has too much of space wasted because of the logo, even if the overall design rocks.
So yeah I may buy the S5 this year

Only problem I can see is the s5 has a monster ROM of about 8gb of bloatware I mean valuable and useful Samsung features
Programming is a race between engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.

personally as someone who has used an iphone and then a galaxy (s4 here) then a nexus device, I would stay away from the s5 unless you really really like touchwiz.
just personal preference but i never liked the bloated feel of touchwiz (lg Optimus UI... I'm looking at you too)
i love the iPhone in how everything just works well and is so thoughtfully designed whereas i love the amount of control i have to make my nexus 5 my own
samsung doesnt give you the same control as a nexus device, nor are their features as useful as an apple device so to me not worth the premium price tag you have pay.

I would definitely go with a Nexus 5.

Nexus S or some other phone????

I was planning to buy nexus s nd i even got a deal for $359
But after the launch of samsung galaxy nexus, samsung has stopped all the warranty and after sales service for the nexus s
So which phone should I buy??
and my budget is of $360 Only
What carrier? That is alot to pay for an outdated phone. You can get a used phone that is much better for $360...

Don't get a nexus S, its a hardly upgraded vibrant that was a complete waste of money on release. I bought a used one for 180 and gave it to my 5 year old sister it was such a letdown.
If you really must have a developer phone when wait for the Galaxy Nexus. Otherwise, I recommend any of the Samsung branded phones. I love my Galaxy Captivate, my wife uses the new Galaxy Infuse and the Galaxy S II looks bad-ass IMO.

I don't completely disagree, although the Vibrant was priced similarly just anywhere I looked (at least in my part of Canada back when I bought mine).
Sometimes wish I got the Vibrant for the Gorilla glass, but I'm definitely loving the dev community the Nexus S has. That's what is really making me feel like I made a good decision.

Enough in my honest opinion, seeing how some lesser phones still get development for a few months after becoming "obsolete" in the sense of their technology getting slightly outdated.
Nevertheless, I think all Nexus models will get decent development, judging from the Nexus One and S.
It's a game nobody will win, technology is forever going further and the moment you buy something, there's something new right around the corner or already available on the market. You can always decide to play the waiting game if you're not in need for a change right now, just don't get stuck waiting forever...

A damn lot! Look at the Nexus One! If I'm not mistaken, Dr Kmobs from cyanogenmod is still using and developing for his. The nexus One was either the first or second device to get an ICS SDK port. Not everyone can afford the latest and greatest, any dev phone will get a fair amount of custom ROM love. If you can get a good deal on a nexus S, and you think its what you want, go for it. You aren't gonna be left behind any time soon. That said, if you want the very latest and greatest, get a galaxy nexus, its a huge upgrade.

Nothing like a huge cover to keep it from getting scratched!
Can't wait for the day our phones are near indestructible bricks lasting forever on a charge. It's sad to have such sexy technology getting covered with covers, enhanced with bulky batteries and needing to be constantly plugged in.
Likely the only reasons I miss the days I was using dumbphones, they were indestructible or of no real value, they would last a week on a charge and definitely did not cost as much.
I'l have to buy an unlocked phone(NEW)

Samsung captivate(bad)

SAMSUNG VIBRANT(BAD)

SAMSUNG GALAXY S2

my suggestion, watch Craigslist. My gs2 cost me 280 dollars like new.
I think xperia neo is also a good option.
I am getting it for the same price($359)
But I want to get the ICS update as fast as possible...
And acc. to you guyz wen will we get some used GALAXY NEXUS (NEXUS PRIME)
on ebay.com
I will strongly recommend you Samsung Galaxy S2 if your budget provides. Other than that, Nexus S is actually a pretty good phone (very good for this price). The next Google phone series is Galaxy Nexus which will be priced around 35k (INR). That may overkill your budget.
Better stick with Nexus S. It will also get the ICS update very soon, at least earlier than other non-stock android phones (Galaxy S2).
As for Xperia Neo V, it is a great phone too, if you can get it around for 15k (@ adexmart). You may want to try both of these phones at a retail store. Thumbs up to whichever suits you better.
To be honest, you may want to ask for such queries @ thinkdigit. They're aware of the Indian smartphone market better.
I love my NS. The development community is very active, and it'll get even more so when ICS is pushed to the NS!
Plus, with Voodoo and a very stable CyanogenMod build, it blows the doors off my old Vibrant. The stock-black with no carrier branding looks very sexy, too.

Thinking of replacing my note 2 with another phone

I have sold my s3 and got a note 2 since december from last year.
The reason i bought such a huge phone was for the s pen. It helped me in college for taking notes, but then ive bought an ipad which can work for the same purpose, except without the s pen.
Nowadays im just not finding the note 2 practical for everyday usage. Its just too big.
So now im Thinking of selling it and either buying either an s4, htc one or xperia z.
Can someone give me feedback on those phones?
I love the design of sony phones, but i also cant live without the features of samsung phones
Keep it or you will regret it.

If the size of the note 2 is too much, I wouldn't got for the xperia z. its a bit blocky.
I wouldn't the s4 either. Go for the Oppo Find 5, looks to have decent developer support as well

I wouldn't really recommend any of the devices (I've got my hands on S4, Z and One, FYI) over the Note II. But if the size is bothering you that much, go for S4. It's got almost no bezel, and is nearly the same size as S3. Z is probably my least favorite device of all 3, and it's really a tie between One and S4.
But other than that, many users here have switched back to N2, for the record. From both One and S4.

Personally I would go for the HTC One
It is a stunning looking phone and I personally prefer HTC Sense to TouchWiz. All IMO of course, but if I could turn back time I would have got the One instead of the N7105.
32GB Storage is enough for most people, and the only negative is the non-replaceable super sealed in battery where there's no getting at it without wrecking the rest of the phone. From my experience though, this won't be an issue for the lifespan that you'll have the phone.

This depends though on how biased you may be to a particular company.
As bizarre as it sounds, some grown men actually "support" an electronics company the same way normal people support a sports team.

why is supporting a sports team considered normal and support a electronics company isn't? In what ways does a sport team have in connection with it's fans? Nothing. People support a sport team so that they have a sense of belonging, thus filling the mid level needs in Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Different people have difference ways of completing that need. Some "grown" men support their country and hence nationalism, some men support their sport team and hence the sporting industry.
In fact, a normal person can have more sense of belonging to a electronic company because they can buy shares of that company and become part owner.
If you want to change to a similar size just wait for the HTC One Max or the Note 3. They'll be here shortly. Even the Xperia Ultra Z looks nice.
However If you feel that Note 2 is big for you, definitely try the HTC one. Its an awesome phone. I bet you wont give up that one easily.
HTC One would be the way to go, or a Nexus 4.
However, out of experience I can tell: you can get used to a phone with big screen such as the Note 2, but the other way around.. Not really. When I take my Nexus in my hands now, it feels like a freaking toy. The Note is just boss. Also Note 2 community is very alive (on XDA and beyond too) and there are many good TW and AOSP roms and kernels out there..
Off the record: I even dare to say I have a better AOSP experience than on my Nexus, why ? 'Cause of the 5,5" display..
I sold my htc one and bought the note 2. I can tell you what i think (pros ans cons)
1 htc one is much faster than note 2 and s4
2 the big screen in the note2 is a pro and con at the same time. "Pro" because ots really great to play games and read and "con" because its hard to handle it with one hand. Also the htc one sreen is much greater than the note 2, looks a lot sharper and better colors
3 the battery of the note2 is really amazing, i have gotten 8hrs screen time while in the htc one i have gotten 6+ hrs screen time but sometimes just 5hrs screen time
4 the camera on both are great, i like the htc camera more because of the functions and the quality is really great
5 the sound of the htc one is simply the best, even better than some laptops trust me!!
6 you can install a sd card in the note2
7 you have spen in the note2 (i dont use it that much so to me its not a big deal)
Im thinking in sale my note2 and get the htc one again but its hard to leave the great battery life i get with the note2 so its your choice mate

Because it's usually sad losers who ramble on online desperately trying to defend their precious brands and these "fanboys" have no shame.
A supporter of a sports team usually isn't the type of loser who portrays a sad and lonely one man crusade online to defend his precious brand name. Dunno what sports you like mate, but I go for a few beers with my mates and then go watch Arsenal. It is completely different to feeling the need to ramble on whenever a company like Apple is mentioned.
The fanboy "iFail, Crapple" type people are all too frequent and pathetic and they need to get a life.
As for the rest of your rant, I tend to find the online or technology "fanboys" to be more cringeworthy than the rest. Maybe they're sociallu awkward and need support the samsung or apple team (whatever that means).
The only logic fail here is you telling the op that the Note 3 is the best even though he already said the note 2 was too big for him. I would hazard a guess this is because you are one of these aforementioned fanboy characters and can't bear to see anyone suggest anything other than the Note

[Descussion] People Leave s4?

after everyone saw galaxy s5. all people are disappointed for it.
and they say it will let Samsung.
So, do you think people (especially developers) will leave s4 to get htc m8 and lg g3 and others?.
is it the end of Sammy?
Thanks in advance.

I use long time Galaxy phones 2/3/4 and nexus phones 1/2/3/4/5 but I stop now with Samsung devices , the S5 is a joke. We are for sure support S5 in the future but I am will not work on it. Nexus is and will be the best

I believe there will be two versions of this phone. The one announced, and then a metal one further down the road with a new snapdragon processor...

Actually, I dont care about the S5.
After I had 2 LG-devices, I thought I go the mainstream and follow Samsung.
I actually can not complain about my S4. It is working.
But the implemented Samsung features like airview, airfart and air-whatever are poorly implemented and useless for me.
I am disappointed by Samsung doesn't care of the Exynos-version (which I have) and I understand that the devs dont care either Samsung continues their developer hostile strategy.
Not sure what comes next.
Due to lack of financial resources, I will stick with my phone... but as soon as I have more money left over again, I might switch to Sony or Huawei or Oppo (I guess).
After the show off S5 at MWC 2014, It's the same. I don know since Galaxy S4, all Galaxy series is almost same.
Why I need to go to S5?
Just only for fingerprint scanner or heart beat scanner?
Just icon changed and extra hardware with boring and 18th century look :3
M happy with my s4 + I will think to other manufacturer if I got bored from s4.

[Q] Help me decide my next phone!

Hello guys,
I've been searching recently to decide which phone will be my next phone in 2 months. The parameters for me to decide are, I keep the phone at least few years like my current SGS2 phone and I need it to stay above average. I know I may see better for next 6 months or so but I want to decide in this period. Money is not a factor.
I've been reading about new Knox for SGS5 and every poll in other websites I've read was saying they are not going to buy or they are not interested and disappointed!
I also read about another Galaxy S 5 named F series or Galaxy Prime! It's the same as Galaxy S 5 but with better specs and metal unibody!
I stuck to choose between these:
Google Nexus 5 (32gb, LTE)
Samsung Galaxy S5 (prefer 32gb but if it's available till then, LTE)
Samsung Galaxy S4 (I9505 LTE)
I also created a poll for the ones who are lazy to answer.
Any response, opinions are welcomed.:good:
Thank you.
EDIT:
I prefer removable battery because in my country any official repair center has no meaning and they are all in one that asks money for their services. So in few years period I need atleast one new battery as my previous experiences. And having removable battery is a factor. And having an SD card is but with 32gb version that would not be a huge problem but I prefer having removable battery and SD card slot.
I heard about nexus 5 battery life that as its best it would be average. Having a good battery life could be a factor too.

Also since you haven't really mentioned any real requirements, I'd suggest going for the new HTC One or the Xperia Z2.

Thank you for mentioning that thread! :good:
I added a few ones now. I don't need all those new gimmicks that new galaxy series are providing but having them is not a bad idea! Also I prefer to feel the phone in my hands comfortably and I don't care about it's unibody or the quality of the body!

Previously I thought who would get Note series with those huge lcds! But now all the new phones have 5" lcd so they all are phablets IMO.
I really don't know about Note series you just add an extra option for me. Yeah the leather back is awesome even the features that S-pen brought if you don't consider the extra bucks for it but I don't need all those feature. I think I would stay with my current choices and won't add note to those.
Thanks for your suggestion I really appreciate it.
LG G2 is a good device. Take a look on it. Very good battery life camera processor and screen .... but it doesn't have a removable battery :/
I would suggest the S5 as it has:
+ removable battery, which is IMHO very important
+ sdcard slot, so no real need for 32gb version
+ water resistance (ip67, half an hour under water)
+ hardware buttons
+ an IR-blaster
Regards!

Thank you for your suggestion. I was exactly looking at this phone on gsmarena right now! It has a good specs but I don't know why I don't like the way it looks! It's way too simple! It almost has the same hardware as SGS5. According to gsmarena G2 has only better battery life in idle! But we can't be sure with an unreleased phone!
It also don't have SD card slot.
If I'm going to add another option to my choices I would go with Sony Xperia Z2! I just love the way it looks and it also don't have removable battery and even SD card slot. lol
But anyways thanks for your suggestion I really appreciate it.:good:

The only things that makes me to stay away from this phone are the Knox thing and many uninterested people according to some of polls on which websites I've read, it makes it less popular and for us on xda that we all use custom roms, this would be a potential issue!
And another thing is the release date on April 11th and LTE version on release date. I want to buy it off-contract.

IMHO it depends on what sort of software you want to end up running. I love AOSP, so I'm planning to get Nexus 5. It's intended to run AOSP, so support, drivers and development will be awesome On the other hand, if you like running AOSP but buy a closed source (e.g. Exynos Samsung) then you're going to be compromised from the start. I see from your signature that you're on Slim atm, maybe keep that in mind if you plan on switching to AOSP.
I do like the look of the new HTC One though. :silly:
Edit: and, it is SD card expandable. No removable battery though.
And you posted this to I9100 Q&A why exactly ? Just because you currently have one is no reason at all, this thread belongs in one of the general chit chat forums, not a device specific one. I'm tipping mods move this.

I've never tried to choose my phone from software view! The only thing that matters for me is ability to root your phone. Cause I'm end up doing it anyway. The software is important too because of development, and new Knox thing for S5 makes it even harder except the fact that it's closed source. But afaik it has snapdragon 801 and they are not closed source, aren't they?
On the other hand reviews on Nexus 5 battery life worries me. Cause they said it would do average as its best and it's not a removable battery. I won't expand the battery but with my usage I end up with f*cked up battery and it needs to be replaced in first two years of use! Having or not having SD card is not a big factor with 32gb nand for me.
It's getting worse to decide a phone.
And looking at Sony Xperia Z2, I stuck between S5 and Z2. Buy with aosp and development of Nexus 5 software, I really don't know which one to get.

I would suggest going with a device that has "enthusiastic" developer's who unlike our poor devs doesn't have to deal with lots of proprietary headache, accordingly my most logical advice would be the Nexus 5, but again its not the high end configuration that attracts me its the dev support and update frequencies so if it was me I would still be happy with the poor mans Nexus ie. the beautiful Moto G, and if I had money to waste I would look at the Google Play Edition HTC One (M8).

Yeah exactly. The only thing attracts me to Nexus 5 is this. It's even easier and cheaper for me to buy Nexus rather than other phones that I'm planning on. But the fact that I need to hold on to this phone in next few years scares me the most! Maybe buying Nexus 5 now and see for consumer advice and reviews after releasing S5 in few months then change my phone again? It would be possible but money wise I don't think so.
I don't like HTC phones in rooting matter. Two of my friends had HTC and after rooting they hard bricked their phone!
I was hoping for S5 google edition? Fingers crossed.

Root isn't everything... unless you want to be stuck with stock ROM and Xposed for the life of the phone, something I couldn't do. I want custom ROMs and especially kernels for my phone, the more the better. What if it's bootloader locked and not un-lockable? No custom kernel for you then. Have you had a look at the N5 forums on xda? More roms/kernels/mods than you can imagine

Yeah exactly. Fortunately I want to buy my phone off contract so it has a chance that bootloader is not locked on an specific operator!
You are making me to go for Nexus 5 but my heart says go for your true love which is S5.
I think I would wait until the S5 release date and see some actual reviews then decide. If I had a chance to be able to buy another phone in one year period, I'm saying this because if you buy new phone and sell it a week after the price would drop and in my opinion it's a real waste of money, I would definitely buy Nexus 5 then go for S5! It would be a win win situation. :victory:

I have now the N5....I have to say its awesome...The development for this phone is top notch imo...I wanted a removable battery to start with but thats through old habits..Im a pretty hard user but not with games..Im running slimkat with elementalX kernel....Its so good...I found the LG G2 a touch to big for what I wanted...Good luck with your decision and who knows we may even meet up on the hammerhead thread....
Edit - I just couldnt go back to samsung...

Oh really? Are you happy with it? How about the battery life? As I said on previous posts I'm reading the battery life on N5 would be average at its best! I'm not a gamer on phone too but sometimes I just play to get the time past when I'm outside and bored.
Yeah in matter of development no other phone can even compare to N5!
I'm now really stuck between N5 and S5! I know the price is half of S5 but I really don't know! I like the new features in S5 specially the Camera and Ultra Power saving mode. But with Knox I don't know if any custom roms would be available even two months after release!
May I ask why you wouldn't go back to samsung? Just being curious.
I want to tell my friend in US to buy me a 32gb version with LTE for N5 and the same would be happen with S5! And I can see her approximately in next month! So till then I have a chance to see the S5 being released! But right now I'm feeling end up buying N5. lol :victory:
Perhaps this affects your decision, chainfire managed to root the s5!!

Switching back to Android

I'm looking at going back to Android for my phone. The last Android phone I had was the HTC EVO. It has been that long.
I currently have a nexus player and nvidia shield tablet. So I have still been using android just not as my phone.
So the question is which phone is the best to go with? The s7 edge, nexus 6p or one plus 3.
I would like to stick with 5.5-5.7 screen and ability to do VR and stream games via moonlight.
So any advise?

Hmm... I have a galaxy s6 and love it. I would recommend nexus or galaxy.
Something important is that DO NOT buy a cheap brand! The specs might look good but the performance is terrible

Are you referring to the One Plus?
Doesn't it take forever to get Android updates on the Galaxy?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well, it's hard to say. It depends completly how you want to use your device
Its true Samsung uses a lot if time on updates expecially if you are outside us and UK. But Samsung dedicates itself to the update trying to make it as stable as possible before releasing
I have never had that as a problem, the updates are very minor. Even from Lollipop to Marshmallow I saw very few changes. I would recommend you to do a Google search on the best android phones!
I'm not sure what I feel about nexus, on one hand Google is very good at quality, but on the other hand they are fighting strongly against root etc. So I gotta feeling it's only getting harder and harder to customize the phone
There's a dedicated thread for such questions here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620179
Many opinions to be had there, so I'll close this thread. :good:
