Returning phone to stock for resale? - HTC Sensation

I've been out of the scene for years and have long since moved away from my Sensation 4G. Its sitting here collecting dust and although probably not worth a helluva lot I'd like to sell it while someone can get some decent use out of it still.
My question is, how do I return it to stock so I can sell it to the "average Joe". I'll keep it unlocked and rootable but how can I put the original HTC rom back on so I can advertise it as "stock"? Currently running an old v4.1 version of MIUI with 4EXT Touch Recovery, and honestly I dont even know where the HTC updates stop; or if its still supported.
I'd like to just get this phone to a sellable "stock" condition and give the user the choice to tweak it (or not).

If your device is S-Off then you can install and ICS RUU which can be downloaded from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661591

Thanks,
Couple more questions;
-Once installed and returned to factory will this allow OTA updates from HTC?
-The filename mentions Europe, I'm U.S., does it matter?
-Is it really an .exe file? What is it designed to do?
-Do I run it from 4EXT (off the sim card) or from PC?
-It says "Firmware is the same as earlier firmware included in 3.32 RUUs". Which FW is that? I'm on 1.17 still
I should also mention: T-Mobile USA with S-Off
Thanks, and sorry in advance for the noob questions. Like I said, I've been out of the loop for years and have no desire to tweak my phone again.
I just wanna get this back to stock and sell it!

you run the exe directly from pc connected the device to it in fastboot mode
and another thing you have to know is when installing ruu.exe
you are forgeting 4ext recovery
it restores completely everything back to stock
but i suggest to use a t-mobile usa ruu.exe
also you will have OTA updates.but this device is discontinued
the latest official update is to ics android

Great, thanks. I'll look for a Tmob US ruu.
Firmware, do I need to flash to the required FW in Hboot first or will the installer take care of that for me? If so where did HTC leave off?
I'm looking at 3.33 being the most current ICS FW. But that's based on this thread:

[Q] Questions after 3 days of reading Forums

Hi,
First post (yay!) so I have a few questions:
1. Where is the 'thanks' button? There are loads of you I wanted to thank but it has not shown up on my forums where the help section said it would be. Has shown up now - guess I had to make a post before I could thanks people
2. I have the emmc chip that is prone to failure but after reading the forums it seems there may be a way to recover from it - is that right, and the chip is no longer a big problem? (Absolutely cannot afford to brick this phone as it's a present from a wife already angry that I rooted it)
3. Should I try to upgrade my HBOOT to 2.00.2002 and Radio (to what? the PCIMG88.zip from the Chinese website?) and install a new ROM, or try and revert everything back to s-on, unrooted stock rom and wait for the official update that is rolling out now in the UK? I'd prefer the option with the least chance of stress and bricking the phone.
4. After flashing a new ROM (if I do) I understand I should avoid updating/installing apps at the same time so my emmc chip isn't fried - can I reinstall 1 by 1 from Titanium backup, and won't Google start trying to download and install everything else at once? How do I avoid that?
I'm in the UK on T-Mobile PAYG with (I think) an unbranded Desire S

4.if u restore all apps with titanium backup at once its ok, i think..
but when u setup your phone dont add google account to sync your app..
restore your apps and then add it..
take a look to ben_pyett signature for some useful links..
Theses are just my opinions
Thanks button to bottom right of each post next to edit button,
Don't bother upgrading you're hboot to 2.xx.xxxx (not yet any benefit)
Don't bother going back to s-on.
Don't pull battery.
I'd try to install the normal ENG bootloader over your revolutionary one if you can.
I'd also suggest installing the 4 EXT recovery instead of Cwm.
Don't do anything to you're device that you don't fully understand.
You've done the most difficult part making your device s-off now install some quality custom roms and enjoy it.
Always take full nandroid device backups prior to performing any steps on your device, so that you have a safe point to roll back to in case of problems.
When installing a new custom ROM don't enter your google account details until the last stage of the setup after the device had stopped all configuration, then go into the market app and check to see of it's installing any apps, if it is then cancel downloads, only some versions of market attempt the parallel download of several apps which has been linked to killing eMMC. Later one download one application at a time which seems ok..add suggested advice I also use titanium backup app to restore my apps after the new installation of a ROM rather than relying on market installs.
There is now more information on the eMMC issue, what was previously thought of a dead device can now be recovered but each instance is unique.
Enjoy

Guys,
Thanks for the replies - when I asked about the Thanks button it wasn't there, it only appeared after I posted so that is sorted now.
Ben, I do have 4EXT already installed and a backup, this isn't my first android phone but I would still class myself as a noob - I think I know what I'm doing generally but probably don't.
I think I might try for the ENG Hboot if I can find that post but I thought I would need the 2.00.2002 Hboot for sense 3.0 roms.
What is the advantage of the ENG Hboot over the revolutionary one?
Also, I'm wondering if I will receive an OTA option to update since I have s-off and rooted - I'm pretty sure I should not accept as it looks like some people have been experiencing problems trying to install the OTA over their non-stock phones/settings.
Can anyone confirm that:
1) my phone would see the update if it rolls out and
2) I should not install it unless I go back to stock rom and s-on?
Installing a new ROM will alert my wife to the fact I have rooted it so I'm in no hurry until I decide I can't live without some spectacular new features
Yep, DO NOT INSTALL THE OTA
^when you are rooted and s-off.
It will lead to problems.
I'd really suggest you try out Hyperion ROM/Saga 3D
They are like the stock ROMs with sense 3.0 (new OTA based)
They are optimised and better than the stock ota anyway

You shouldn't even consider OTA updates unless you're S-ON and STOCK....
certainly don't try it on a rooted device, just asking for trouble...I always simply disable the check for updates and Tell HTC features..
There are benefits to having ENG HBOOT (although I'm not 100% of all of them) I believe that you're able to downgrade easier, should you require the HBOOT number also doesn't stand out like a sore thumb......6.xx.xxxx should you want to return device!
All the new Sense 3.0 and Sense 3.5 ROMS work on old HBOOT, so just no point in upgrading, I did the upgrade before I released this and it's not worth going back.
EDIT: You also need to have a word with the misses! It's now your phone so you should be able to do what you want to it - whatever makes you happy!!

Oh, just wondering, as i never saw the update posted officially...
So if it is official, why does the official sense 3.0 rom not make full use of the new partitions?

I believe this is because the cooks have made it this way.....My understanding is that the "official" S-On OTA upgrade installs the new version HBOOT and makes use of this new layout.
Someone correct me if this is wrong?

T-Mobile Branded Desire S Rooting

Hi all
I just wanted to make this post to make sure I know the exact process before I go ahead with this. Let me give you a little background....
I got a T-Mobile branded Desire S about 8 months ago and left it completely stock, after a while had an OTA update and from then on had constant problems with not receiving txts etc. So I S-offed and rooted with the RevX website and manually updated the radio to the latest version I could find. This fixed all my problems and everything was fine for months but then one day the phone just froze and without reading up too much I just started pressing buttons to reset/pulled the battery etc and ended up killing the phone completely.
Fast forward to now and I've just got a replacement phone but it has the older software on again so I'm not receiving txt messages again. I guess I need to update the radio image again to sort it but was hoping someone could let me know the exact process.
I assume I should use the RevX website again to S-Off/root then install CWM and the updates but which order and which versions should I be installing? I want to get it right up to date with 3.3.5 and sense 3.0 but not one of the custom ROMs.
Really appreciate anyone who takes the time to answer so thanks in advance.
First of all, please post stuff like this in Q&A. Secondly alpharevx is outdated now. Use revolutionary to S-OFF.
But now I'm confused. Do you want to update the radio and then S-ON again and get the latest update, or install a stock rom?
Sent from my Desire S using xda premium
Well ideally I'd like to not need to do anything! but at the moment I don't receive txt messages so I need to get it working. I don't want to use custom roms anyway so just need to upgrade to the latest official version.
If I understand correctly from what I've read I should use revolutionary to s-off then a program to root the phone. Then I could install 4ext and then install one of the 3.3.5 versions that works on a s-off/rooted phone and then finally update the radio to the version that works with 3.3.5?
Been reading up a little more and I will be using revolutionary to s-off the phone but should I install the recovery that comes with that? I assume this is CWM? Can I then overwrite it with 4ext if I want to?

Yes, you can.

Rooted phone. Will I still be able to upgrade to the official ICS?

Hey guys. I've got a rooted HTC sensation XE running on clockwork recovery mod and I was just wondering whether I'll be able to update my phone when I get the official ICS update from HTC? This may have been posted a few times, but I didn't find anythig that was accurately answerig my question. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: After hours of thinking, browsing and getting help from others, I have finally successfully updated my phone to the new ICS. Special thanks to SquithyX.
If you have any doubts, feel free to ask me.

No you can't.. After you update you will get Wifi Error due to kernel mismatch..
there is a fix for this too in Dev forum..
Hi IceCookies, don't listen to the other poster on this thread, they are just scaremongering!
If your XE is Stock 1.73.401.4 and the only thing you have done is flash clockwork and root...then with one change you can with ease, i did my XE last night - official OTA push and my mates XE this morning using files on sd card.
You NEED to have the stock recovery, CWM will not work. Easiest way to get stock for XE is to install Recovery Manager from on here.
Then you can either wait for the OTA push to your phone or download the file from the HTC servers and push it yourself.
Noted so far, ICS is MUCH faster and more responsive. After update you should still be s-off too!
Hope this helps mate, if you want any more help let me know and will guide you through

It worked great for me to just rename the .zip to update.zip and install it using CWM.
I had to install the newest hboot found here on xda, though, otherwise the OS would get stuck in the middle of the boot process...

As for you my friend, I've already tried pushing in the update myself through CWM and it didn't quite work out.
Okay, so guys, I've tried to push in the OTA update myself. I flashed the stock ROM(I think). But the problem is my software number is 1.73.415.3. And I can't get it to flash back to Stock.
Ok, is you phone branded to any network? What is your CID? You can find out using terminal or CID getter from the market, it sounds like you have a branded phone.
You can still have the OTA flash but will need a few more steps before being able to flash it
No, my phone is not branded by any phone carrier if that's what you mean. The phone didn't have to be unlocked or anything by the carrier. When I got the phone it was stock and unlocked and ready to use. Now, whenever I try to install the new OTA update, it says installation aborted(Status 7).
I'll get you the CID now, gimme a sec.
Btw, you got msn or something so you can help me through instant messaging?
Yea it will as the OTA update is only for 1.73.401.4 which is EU default firmware. Whats your CID? From the looks of it, CID is something like HTC__J15 (just a guess).
What you will need to do is to change your CID to either EU WWE CID (HTC__001) or to SuperCID (11111111) Then flash 1.73.401.4 then you can upgrade with the OTA files.
Get CID Getter (free) from the Market / Play Store and it will show you your CID, or if you have Terminal installed use "su" then "getprop ro.cid" to find out what your CID is.
Alright dude, my CID is HTC_J15.
But see, the update for ICS will soon come to the middle east, and I'm guessing the default firmware for the middle east is the one that I stated above. So should I actually degrade to the EU firmware and then install my country's ICS update?
Now that my friend is up to you, if you change your CID to SuperCID you can install any and all firmwares, be them EU, Middle East, China, or even branded ones such as AT&T, O2, Bell... (not sure why you would want to though!) Or using the EU WWE CID will let you install any WWE ROM.
If you don't mind waiting for the OTA update for the Middle East to be rolled out then just sit tight and when HTC are ready your phone will tell you, should be about 1-2 weeks tops i suspect. The OTA update out at present is only for EU WWE ROMS.
But...if you NEED / want the OTA update now, then you will have to change your CID and install the EU WWE ROM.
The EU one is not a downgrade, HTC use different version numbers to target there updates, the ROMS with be almost identical. Its just like all the versions numbers are different for all the branded ROMS.
Ah alright. But bro, if I wait and get the update directly from HTC, will I still need to unroot and go back to stock from clockwork mod to install the official update?
You will have to have stock recovery and stock ROM, root doesn't matter, you can de-root or just leave it and after the OTA Update you can re-root.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio Z715e using xda premium
Alright buddy, but I'm having a hard time finding the Stock ROM, tried google'ing and stuff.
I should get the software number to be 1.73.403.3 and then install the stock ROM, and after that install the OTA or is there an easier way?
First off you will need to change the CID on your phone to either SuperCID (1111111) or EU WWE CID (HTC_001) - I left my as EU WWE CID as it is the most used CID for custom ROMS.
Then install the Stock ROM (1.73.401.4) - That will also give you the stock recovery
From there you can install the OTA Update and have ICS
Alright, this might be a really nooby thing to do, but could you link me or tell me where to get the EU WWE CID?
Okay mate, I have successfully changed my CID to SuperCID(11111111). Now I just need to install the Stock ROM.
Ok, here you go:
1. Set your CID using this guide (part4)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
You can either use CID HTC__001 or 11111111
2. The flash file for EU WWE ROM is:
RUU_Pyramid_LE_HTC_Europe_1.73.401.4_Radio_10.58.9035.00U_10.15.9035.02_2_release_220036_signed.exe
You can find it here:
http://www.filefactory.com/f/c87a2330449af512/
3. Update using OTA update from HTC server:
http://fotadl.htc.com/OTA_PYRAMID_L...73.401.4_P_release_246589q3t6rh79ci68p68k.zip
Or use your own files if you have them.
Hope this helps you out
Ah, sweet. I already have the OTA update downloaded. Trying to download the flash file for the EU WWE ROM now, but it keeps saying the free download spots on the servers are currently in use, so I guess I gotta wait.
EDIT: Nvm, googled the EU WWE ROM, and found the same ones on some other sites, in progress of downloading them now.

Which stock Sensation XE rom has the least amount of bloatware?

Which stock Sensation XE rom has the least amount of bloatware?
The question pretty much sums it up. I just got a Sensation XE, Hong Kong model. It has a lot of crap software on it: youni sms, xda assistant, 通通电话,baidu, kuwo player, and all this other Chinese crap. I hate Chinese software with passion. If skynet was/is real, I believe it would be running a Chinese OS. Chinese software naturally tries to take over your computer or phone.
I want to switch to the stock rom with the least amount of junk on it. If it also has a good Chinese/English keyboard with handwriting input that is a plus.
Also, just to make sure I'm on the right track, this is what should be done before I can change roms, right?
1) Get S-off
2) Install Clockwork Mod
3) Get permanent root
4) Write super cid
5) Change Stock Rom

the steps are fine ..but 3rd step is not required ...and 2)better have 4EXT recovery ..its better imho and between 4 and 5 there might be one more step ..which can only be decided after you told the current rom you are having (if running gb now ..for ICS you need to flash 3.32/3.33 firmware ..then ROM)
as for the ROM ..for simple STOCK like and fully customized with bloat removed ..try ARHD, insert coin or Elegancia
Hi,
If you go through the steps you mentioned:
1) Get S-off
2) Install Clockwork Mod (Try to get a PG58IMG.zip version of it, saves having to fastboot flash it)
3) Get permanent root
4) Write super cid
5) Change Stock Rom
You could stop at step3 and manuall delete stuff off the ROM you have. OR, what I'd probably do), and as mentioned you can skip step 3 if you're installing a new ROM. Go for a WWE (World Wide English) RUU if you want to keep completely Stock, you can then run ROMcleaner to remove some redundant crap.
Look for something like: RUU_PYRAMID_ICS_HTC_Europe_3.32.401.5_Radio_11.69. 3504.00U_11.22.3504.07_M_release_246089_signed.exe
It's ICS with Sense 3.6. The 401 in the above means it's WWE and will either need SuperCID (11111111) or HTC__001, it's completely unbranded.
You can find ROMcleaner at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217664
Thanks for the replies. I know I can root and then uninstall system apps. I don't really like doing that because you just don't know what else has been done to the rom. This Hong Kong rom won't let me use stock SMS (I know how to select default SMS program, it doesn't work on this rom) and doesn't have stock browser (it has some chinese version of Opera), is asking me if I want to invite my contacts to join all kinds of stupid networks, gets involved with my text messages, has some Chinese antivirus that keeps complaining, and all kinds of other crap. It's the worst rom I've ever seen. The WWE appears to be what I'm looking for. It's unbranded and shouldn't have carrier or region specific stuff. Youtube and other apps that don't ask me questions I can deal with.
I want root, for all of it's obvious benefits. I usually run stock, rooted and custom kernal with GPU overclock. But I'm not so sure I like sense, but I want to try a cleaner rom before I decide on sense.
I'm guessing I don't need to do the OTA update before I start the process. I also saw there were some special procedures for the latest ICS. I'll deal with that bridge when I get there. For now I just need a clean rom that doesn't bombard me with useless Chinese crap.

I saw there were some special procedures for the latest ICS. I'll deal with that bridge when I get there. For now I just need a clean gingerbread that doesn't bombard me with useless Chinese crap.

There are a few WWE GB ROMs out there, the one I mentioned is pretty slick as it's ICS which seems to work better IMHO.
The following is mentioned in post 1776 and there abouts in the following thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074559
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Pyramid
The OP has filefactory as the repository but it never worked for me so I gave up on it, looks like others had the same issue.
Just get a Europe one xxx.401.xxx. Avoid 1.24 if you want to go through OTA updates, I had issues with that, might have been me but .....
The ROMcleaner thing I mentioned is pretty good at removing the HTC extra stuff.
Of course, there are a few very nice custom ROMs out there. I was using Virtuous Inquisition (AOSP look and feel based on Sense but de-sensed as much as possible). I've not tried ARHD/IC and some of the others for a long time so can't comment on them.
Have fun and GL on your quest.
EDIT:
P.S. after applying the RUU you'll need to re-install CWM (again easiest was is if you have a PG58IMG.zip version of it) and then apply the root. It looks like the best root at the moment is SuperSU (reading some posts here from EddyOS).
Thanks again. I'm downloading:
RUU_PYRAMID_LE_ICS_35_S_HTC_Europe_3.32.401.105_R2_Radio_11.69.3504.00U_11.22.3504.07_M_release_253443_signed.exe
Now that I look again the 3.33 version is available, I probably should have downloaded that.
I've already got: ADB drivers, HTC Sync, HTC driver, java, pg58img(recovery.img), CMW 5.0.2.0, revolutionary-0.4pre4, su-2.3.63-efgh, and the unbrick stuff in case something goes wrong. Once I finished downloading the firmware I should be ready to go. I'll double check that all the files are good, re-read all the instructional threads, and then get started. My phone doesn't have a warranty, so I have to make sure everything is done correctly the first time.
I also found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
Will I need to flash this as well?
HTC phones are so much more complicated compared to the other phones I've rooted and flashed. On my Huawei phone you plugged the phone in to the computer, copied two files, and you were rooted and had CWM installed.

The 3.32 contains the 1.27.0000 HBOOT which can be unlocked (just done it myself). The 3.33 contains 1.29.0000 which at the moment cannot be unlocked.
As you're already S-OFF it probably doesn't make much difference. I'm on 3.32 at the moment, I don't know what the differences are between 3.32 & 3.33, I assume minor bug fixes.

Unless you go back to HBOOT 1.18.00 or earlier revolutionary can't help to S-OFF, as you're already S-OFF you shouldn't need it.
Does the PG58IMG.zip you mention contain CWM 5.0.2.0 ?, I usually keep a copy about called PG58IMG-CWM5020.zip, then change the name when I want to install it. The reason I ask is that PG58IMG.zip is a generic name and can be used for many things. You'll need to pop the uSD card when it asks you to reboot.
As far as SU is concerned, look at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053

No the RUU is self contained and includes the firmware/radio. You might want to install HBOOT 1.27.0011 afterwards, IRC it allows fastboot commands. I think it's in that thread.

I know HTC seemed to have created hassles. I had an early Sensation and waiting for someone to work out how to S-OFF was a real pain.
GL
EDIT
REMEMBER to take a nandroid backup before you start, just in case ! Also remember that nandroid backups don't include HBOOT or Radio so if you need to revert you'd need to get them. Take a note of the existing baseband/radio & HBOOT.

Good point. I'll add that to the list of steps so I don't forget.
1) Setup ADB/fastboot
2) Get S-off
3) Install Clockwork Mod
4) Backup via CWM!!!!
5) Get permanent root
6) Write super cid
7) Change Stock Rom
Unfortunately the rom didn't download correctly, so looks like I won't be installing the rom tonight.

The nandroid backup is via ClockworkMod, not certain what you're backing up through ADB/fastboot. Guess you could get Radio/Recovery etc. Never tried it myself, I like a simple life
There is no point applying SuperSU until after you have installed the new Stock ROM. You can change the CID directly with fastboot, it doesn't need root for that.
Shame about the download, at least the steps look about right.
Eek, I thought you already had S-OFF ? What HBOOT are you on at the moment ? If it's 1.18.0000 or earlier revolutionary.io is perfect, if it's later it's a different process.
Note that when you install the new stock rom via RUUxxxx.exe, it'll splat the custom recovery so it'll need to be re-applied.
Umm, I booted into HBOOT to get my HBOOT version and at the top of the screen it says:
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT 1.17.008
RADIO-10.11.9007.15_M
That mean I already had S-OFF, right? Well that was easy.
Actually the phone was smuggled into China to avoid taxes. The sellers probably had to get S-OFF to put a Chinese language rom on there. Which also would explain all the extra bloatware, probably was installed by the same people.
Also, I wasn't able to pull the images through ADB. Have to wait until after rooted.
UPDATE: Installed CWM, backing up now, then root. So far so good. I'll probably have to settle for using Titanium Backup to remove the unwanted apps for now. The second try at downloading the RUU also failed.
UPDATE: Rooted, through it probably was already rooted. Also checked the CID and it was already 11111111. Thanks Chinese smugglers. You did all the work for me. Now to finish uninstalling all the crap you put on my phone.
So actually, the only work I did was install the SU and backup my system.
Nice to see it going smoothly for you, and remember if you want to install ics, you need to flash a ics firmware 3.32 or 3.33. Or you'll be in a boot loop.

LOL
As you say that was easy.
There are other sites that you can download 3.32.401 from as it's fairly common, have a look.
As you have a nandroid backup that you can recover back to if needed you can also try ROMcleaner.
I'm going to try a Jelly Bean ROM tomorrow so my nandroid backup will be vital )
A really nice fairly lightweight ROM is Virtuous Inquisition. As I said it's AOSP look and feel but has Sense backend, it's been de-sensed as much as possible.
Anyway Have Fun.

The RUU will contain everything you need and update firmware, Radio, Recovery, HBOOT, ..... and of course the ROM.
Remember it'll flatten the ROM so all saved messages, WiFi details etc. will be lost.
If for some reason you need to revert back to your existing ROM you'll need to downgrade the firmware to 1.17.0008, including the radio. I doubt you'll bother though when you're on 3.32.

If it's that urgent you should spend time familiarize yourself with the search button. There is Asskicker's guide how to flash roms with s-on in the general forum. Plus I gave you a link to RUU's in the other thread you posted in.

Hi
I dont understand what u saied??
What can I do?

Going back to stock question

Hi,
Im probably going to have to return my sensation for repair as its having some weird charging issues, anyway when i bought it it came with gingerbread on a vodafone uk firmware, ive s-off'd it and super cid it, then upgraded firmware and installed ics roms. Just wondering whats the best way about going back to stock, my thought was to go back to a GB rom, then OTA ICS upgrade (although as far as return this isnt necessary), so in order to do this what would I need to do, would I have to flash the 1.17 multi firmware then a custom gb rom then a gb ruu? as I tried to use the original ruu that was on my phone when i got it but got a usb error,
Or should I just try a ics ruu
ive done it once before following the guide on here successfully but for the life of me cant remember how
thank them...

[GUIDE] How to Debrand, Rebrand & Flash Stock ROMs to your Sensation
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193033
hope it helps...
I used 1.27.161.xxxx RUU from http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Pyramid
The CID is "VODAP001"
So change CID, run the RUU.
Then when you are 100% certain it's fine change to S-ON.
Ok thaks, but in order for me to flash a GB RUU do I have to flash a GB Firmware first or is that part of the RUU? The other thing is Im supercid atm, should I change it back to the carrier cid for return?

The RUU contains everything you need (firmware including radio, standard recovery and of course the ROM itself). You'll end up with a standard Vodafone bloated HTC un-rooted ROM. You'll still have S-OFF but no custom recovery.
Yes change the CID back either before or after installing the RUU.
You should change it back to S-ON BUT ONLY after you're sure everything is as it should be. There are a few guides on the final step, I'll let you dig them up, IIRC it's a fastboot command.
hmmm now i cant get the RUU to work, i already had an older vodafone ruu but downloaded yours too, when I try the one you mentioned it just hangs at the "verifying information on your android phone. please wait..." screen if I try the one i had it comes up with error [170] usb connection error, i have HTC Driver 3.0.0.007 installed
will try and download the newest ones
EDIT
Managed to do it by extracting the rom.zip from the ruu and renaming it to PG581IMG.zip Is it correct that it should have the large vodafone logo on boot, when I bought the phone (was a used from an online store) they said it was a vodafone handset however it never originally had the logo like it does now

I just checked in Device Manager and it looks like the HTC device driver I used is 2.0.7.8, in Control panel add/remove programs the HTC Driver Installer is 3.0.0.021.
After installing the HTC stuff I then removed HTC Sync.
Check the MD5 of the RUUs, just rechecked mine and they're the same as on that site. for both 1.24.161.xxx & 1.27.161.xxx.
I run mine with the phone on the home screen, I have also seen recommendations that it should be run with the phone in Fastboot mode (from bootloader).
Apart from that I don't know what it may be apart from a suspect USB cable.
GL
Up and running, just wanted to check the vodafone logo on boot is correct?
