YouTube "Touch to retry" - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After the latest firmware update (176.4.4.1) I have an odd problem with YouTube.
Sometimes, when playing a video, there is a "network error" and a message displayed saying "touch to retry"
It seems to happen randomly but often enough to be annoying.
Clearing data and cache do not fix it
Uninstalling updates does not fix it
Is anyone else getting this error?.
Update:
Thanks to the fantastic contributors to this thread we know the cause of the this error is the latest OTA update from Motorola.
We know that it affects YouTube and the play store.
We know the fix needs to come from Motorola.
Please Post on this thread on the official motorola forum https://forums.motorola.com/posts/fc032e3ef2

Been having the same problem with my Boost Moto G. Seems to go in spurts. It will be fine for a while, then will do this a few times in a row. Really quite annoying.....will be interested to see a fix...or at least a reason.

Yes. Happens on the Koodo update as well. I don't have a lot of data so I've only used the app on Wi-Fi

I am not connected to hidden Wi-Fi. The ssid is visible. I must say that the Wi-Fi signal is stable. Is not the wireless network

Thanks for all your responses. Good to know I'm not alone in this.
I also only seem to get the error on WiFi (good signal stregnth).
Looks like its an issue with the new firmware and WiFi.
Does anyone know how to make Motorola aware of this issue?

When I was in Motorola Rom this happened. Now, Im in Gpe rom, it didn't happen.

I'm pretty sure we need to wait for the next firmware update. I'm still trying to find the best way to make Motorola aware of the issue.
Any suggestions?

I think it is youtube app not motorola. Same thing happens on my moto g AND my lg g2 at random times. Using viral or any other youtube player is ok. If i revert my lg g2 youtube app older version it's ok. As soon as i update app weirdness begins again.

It could be an app thing but I tried revering to an older version of YouTube and had the same issue.
Also I didn't experience this issue before the latest firmware update.
Edit: YouTube updated again. Network error still occurs

Same story here, the lists does not load sometimes, with a retry button on bottom. In-Video touch to retry, takes 4-5 touches to make it work, sometimes more.
Happens on Wi-Fi only, the essid is not hidden.Connection is nearly perfect, all other services work fine, it's the YouTube that has problems (yes YouTube, cos I get same problem on my Xperia.Z).

Youtube update seems to be rolling out that may fix it
Sent from my MyTouch 4G Slide using Tapatalk

I have this same issue on both wifi strong, wifi weak and on Mobile data.
The issue is something to do with the phones data connection and the way the youtube app 'reveals' the problem. On other apps like web browser the page will just 'hang' then reload so you just experience a 'lag' until the data connection is reestablished. The youtube app just goes 'no data sorry' then you keep hitting retry until eventually your phone has reconnected to a data connection and the video loads.
It's very annoying. Before the latest update there was a problem wtih some phones dropping network connection. The latest update included a wireless radio fix to address this.
I 'speculate' that the fix was to make the phone cycle to reconnect to a network more frequently when data is lost. So the phones still drop connections all the time, but reconnect more quickly so it just presents as 'lag' rather than:
'damn my phones not connected to my data network.. better find a network manually'
There is clearly still a radio issue, it took months for the last update to come out to fix it, so don't expect a revision for several months yet ... It could also be to do with battery optimisation made my motorola.... either way it's a bunch of bull****...

[Q] ics 4.0.4 stock ROM wifi stops working

On my completely stock xoom, running the latest build, the wifi stops working after a time (not *sure* how long, but let's say an hour or two). After the wifi has stopped, the tablet will not locate any network (AP) nor will it detect them on the wifi analizer app, with shows all the networks in range and their channels and strengths. The app shows no network activity, which I know to be incorrect. However, after I reboot, all is well... until it fails again. When 8t fails, also, turni g the wifi off and back on again does not fix the wifi (that being a solution I found on other tablets running ICS... any ideas what this can be? Thanks in advance!

Man, if you are rooted, then I can help you better. With stock, it is very limited control that you have over your device. It is easy to root and install custom ROM that will fix most of your problems.
I was actually hoping for a solution that did not involve rooting
I was actually hoping for a solution that did not involve rooting the device. The tablet just came back from Motorola after being repaired for a defective screen. I was thinking that there may be a software problem in the build installed. If this is not a problem that is common on this device, then perhaps there may be a hardware problem, although it does not seem to act that way. . .
Can you do a factory reset?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium HD app
Yes, that was one of the first things I tried, as that is also the first thing customer support tells you to do. I honestly think that is the only tool they have to use.....
Perhaps its hardware related then. If you aren't rooted then send it back to Motorola.

[Q] Wifi Problems

Hi,
Starting to lose my patience with this device now. Such as shame that this lovely piece of hardware is strangled by poor software. I've already put the device on ebay and withdrawn it because its so slinky and I really want the issue to be sorted. I have no option but to go with the ipad mini at this rate, it just works!
Using odin I've successfully upgraded to ICS with P6800DXLP8_P6800OLBLP7_P6800DXLP7_HOME.tar and XXLQ1_OXALQ1_ATO My wifi keeps dropping out, ive tried it on three different routers etc and still the same issue. Tried CM10 and that reboots on me. Ideally i want a stock rom that works without any niggles on my Euro p6800. Any ideas, i'm really trying to make Android work for me, ive searched the forums like a good boy but no real answers anywhere.
:cyclops:
I can't help but thinking... if you are fed up with the Sammy device, why not switch to something that is completely open, like the Nexus 7, instead of a closed ecosystem like Apple's? Seems like there are other (better) choices out there than the iPad mini.
I'm sorry you're having troubles. Please feel free to give me your tablet. I could always use two!
Barring that, here is what I would suggest that has worked for me:
I have always had "advanced WiFi lock" from the play store, and it appears to have improved WiFi performance even when I had ICS.
I had locerra's cyanogen 10 ROM for a spell and really liked it. I then did some research in the development section and found Daniel HK's Paranoid Android ROM v. 2.55 and have enjoyed it even more. WiFi performance has been consistent and stable on both custom. roms.
Do some research and have a go at it.
If not, i can give you my address as I am currently living in Mexico and you can ship it to me!
I didn't experience any wifi issues at all until today. I'm staying with a friend for the week in Canada, and wifi k3ps dropping out. It seems that only a restart will solve the issue, and the network then falls out of range(even though I'm next door to the router). I'll give the app mentioned a try.... But any other thoughts please let us know! I'm on the leaked ics rom from Open Austria, rooted.
Update: "Advanced wifi lock" app has solved the issue, thanks! But we shouldn't really need to download the app.. Any ideas of how to solve such issues natively?

Correction, sadly the app didn't solve the issue.... Still having intermittent wife but HTC is connected constantly.

Ensure you don't have BOTH 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz enabled on your router at the same time.
Use one or the other.
After disabling 2.4 GHz band, and using 5 GHz only on my Billion router, my device (P6810) had no wifi drop-out issue. Same if I use only 2.4 Ghz band only.
Hope it helps.......
BTW, I would suggest LP8, such as my SkyHigh ROM, having "fixed" wifi issue for most........ But try the above first

Did you fix your issue in the end? I've tried changing settings on the Cisco Valet router to operate in just one wavelength but there is no such option... I guess it must be a old router. The wifi lock app didn't make much difference either unfortunately.

Thanks, The firmware on my mate's Cisco router was out of date, wifi connection much better but it still cuts out and appears to only reconnect if I restart. Even a "quick reboot" from within Rom Toolbox Pro doesn't reconnect. Annoying issue... It even cuts out midway through a skype call with my wife (but no issues on mates ipad or my htc) Also no issue with my wifi connection back in the uk. Very weird. Any further ideas appreciated!

Just wondering of the connection is secured? Does it cut out on open connection?
If secured, did you restore wifi settings with any particular app (ie. Titanium)? If so, you could try delete/forget wifi connection and manually enter the password instead
Or, delete/forget wifi connection in settings and restore with titanium backup. You usually have choice of "101" or "XML", try one then the other, reboot each time after restore.
Edit: if you have another device to set up a wifi hotspot, open and secured, and test?

It's a secure network, but i've tried forgetting the ssid and then reconnecting, but it makes no difference... Still patchy connection. I don't want to make the network open as it's my mate's network not mine.
I downloaded an app called "wifi manager" and it seems to be working 60% of the time, which is good enough for the moment. When I get back home to my own wifi network I expect no connection problems as it was working fine when I left last week probably the issues were due to my mates awful Cisco router and not the GTab!

I think it's the WiFi driver in the version of your ROM.
There is no reason you should be having to amend settings on a router because in most instances, you will not have access to a,ending the router.
I'm currently living in Mexico and I'm dependent on several WiFi access points around town and intermittent WiFi where I live. I can safely assume that the technology isn't the latest and greatest down here and I don't control any of those settings.
I am not experiencing the problems you are describing.
I think you're right, it is the wifi driver. I've just tried connecting to the open wifi network at Toronto airport, which connects fine on my htc, but i need to restart my GTab in order to connect to it. I'm running an official Samsung ics rom from the European carrier, Open Austria, (downloaded from samobile.com)... These issues only started when I left the UK and arrived in Canada. I'm wondering if the 3g roaming has some part to play in the error. Anyway.. I will try again when I get home, but anticipating issues.... How would I fix this? Do I have to reinstall the rom and all my apps?! (hope not, as I have this baby set up just perfect )

Check my comments about LP8 firmware mentioned in my first post here..... way down the bottom Was obviously missed. Posts after that, I assumed you had, since you didn't comment about it.
There is also a thread relating to the problem and the subsequentLP8 fix.
Either flash SkyHigh ROM (P6800 DXLP8) or official DXLP8.
Whether just flashing the kernel from DXLP8 firmware world do the trick, not sure, as I have a P6810. But as I said, flashing the firmware package helped most out with the "wifi bug"

Is there anything wrong with this ROM or could anybody recommend a fix or alternate ROM?
Thanks and Regards..
Possible solution to WIFI problems?
I have had major problems with WIFI in my 7.7. The Austrian ICS has dropped connections, went totally berserk in some locations and stopped working unless rebooted.
I have now diagnosed (I believe) that the reason is the use of channel 12 in any WIFI router. If the router does not use 12 there seems to be no problems. At home I can configure my router not to use 12 and after that I have had no problems. There seems to be some kind of conflict or the Tab is faulty in that sense.
I do not know if this can be generalized, but at least for me it worked.
Yes I had the same problem with band number.... My friend's router that my tablet had an intermittent connection with, was on band 11. As soon as I got back home to my router in the uk (which uses band 6) My wifi connection problems disappeared.
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda app-developers app
Yes I Can say after doing alot of reading i realised its the chanel.
im using locked chanel 5 and seems much better..also wifi connection manager from play store.
still not the greatest and low signal even in same room to router but working i suppose.
Just funny how my S3 has a much stronger signal compared to the 6800 every wifi ive ever used.
Would be good if somehow the wifi drivers from S3 could be used somehow?

WiFi issues?

Is anyone else noticing that their WiFi doesn't exactly drop, but just stops working apparently at random?
I notice this when sending a message via Hangouts, it won't send for a minute or two. Just three bouncing dots. My WiFi still shows connected, but the message doesn't send.
Same with Hangouts video chat. It will freeze up on me, and have a poor connection/experience, but when I switch to T-Mobile's network, no issues.
I haven't had this WiFi issue on any other devices in my home. (Droid Incredible, Galaxy Nexus, HP Touchpad w/Jelly Bean).

Artem Russakovskii posted on g+ that the nexus 5 has issues with networks that use a 5 ghz signal. Apparently using another channel solves the problem. Similar to the issues chromecast/nexus 7 has on 5 ghz networks. Changing it is worth a shot, most routers have an option to change it.

Even though my router is not 5 GHz I just went into my phones settings, WiFi, Advanced and changed the WiFi Frequency band from Auto to 2.4 Ghz. Maybe that will help? It seemed to work right away without me having to turn wifi off and on again so there is that. I need to use it awhile though.
Do you have any antivirus programs running? I had to uninstall mine because it was causing wifi issues.

I've been having some pretty terrible Wi-Fi reception. Especially on my school's campus. There will be a router on the ceiling directly above me, and I'll get like one or two bars maybe, and terrible speeds.
Just tried turning off Wi-Fi optimization, maybe it'll work better.
UPDATE: This seems to have fixed it. I just downloaded an app at 6 MB/s from the play store in the same spot I've always had problems.

I am having the same issue with my N5, there's a thread at Android Central discussing this issue: http://forums.androidcentral.com/google-nexus-5/329226-nexus-5-wifi-problem-4.html
Basically, if I watch a YouTube video that's at least 5 minutes long, I won't be able to finish it as the video will pause at least one or two minutes after starting. This is not YouTube buffering the video either, the video will just pause forever.
Another test is open up Chrome and type words into the URL bar. Auto suggests will appear, if I keep doing this, sooner or later there will be no auto suggest appearing, suggesting network connection is either dropped or became very slow.
I am connecting to an Asus RT-N16 router in 2.4Ghz N mode. Tried turning off Wifi optimization, and other router settings (20Mhz spread, G only mode, other frequencies, etc) and same problem persists.
Since this problem is not as common, I am suspecting this maybe a router incompatibility between N5 and Asus Rt-N16. Anyone reading this thread, if you are having this (or not) issue, please post your router model + settings. Thanks.
I have (2) N5's, a white one and a black one. The black one is very "flaky" with regards to wifi and battery drain. I initially noticed the problem with battery drain where it would drop 20% in two hours with <1m of screen time. It would also go from 100% to 4% over the course of a day with <50m of screen time. I initially did not use the phone much as I was trying to figure out the drain problem, but now that I have been using it more, I've experienced wifi drop outs, where the signal indicator shows connected with a strong signal. I have never experienced that amount of battery drain or any wifi problems with the white one. Both connect to the same routers. I have an Asus 802.11AC router at home. The only AC devices I have are the N5's and my laptop, but the laptop and white N5 has never had trouble. At work I have several TP-Link 802.11N routers in the ceiling throughout our building and a Netgear 802.11N router in our IT sandbox lab. I've tried changing channels, 2.4 vs 5Ghz, updating router firmware and performing factory resets on my home router and the Netgear at work, all to no avail. I've done factory wipes on both phones many times trying to find some reason for one to behave in such a way where the other does not. All I can come up with is that the black one is defective. What's worse, some days the black one will work just fine on wifi and I'll see expected battery drain.
Another update: I went to Paradise Bakery (sandwich shop with free wifi) to test out the wifi. The N5 connected to the wifi fine, but unable to get pass the 'Agree to EULA' login page. I brought along my work HTC One and it was able to connect and get pass the agreement page with no problems. I am beginning to think there's something wrong with the wifi on my N5.

It's a ROM issue (radio.img). I was facing same problem on earlier builds of BlissPop ROM, but not no issues..
If you are getting exclamation mark in 2 or more ROMs, then there is problem with your sim-card or the network operator.
I suggest you to contact your concerned network operator and take his help for the same. (If you are facing same issue on 2 or more ROMs, try out Stock ROM CM11s)
Thank you for your reply, so would it be possible to flash a modem from kitkat or would there be compatibility issues with that?

did you check your network type and apn settings
So here is the latest update. I replaced the sim card on Saturday, the problem is is still there. I checked me APN settings they are three UK so that's ok. I've tried cm12,resurrection, blispop and now I'm on sabermod. I'm thinking this oneplus doesn't like lollipop, looks like I will have to revert to kitkat for just now until the official release comes out but I can't see that fixing the problem either as I don't seem to see anyone else with this problem.
Thank you for your help folks

I'm also with Three and have lost my data connection. They replaced the sim on Tuesday and I'm sure it worked until the old number swapped to the new sim. I have a 321 simcard on order and I'll try that once it arrives. My phone is still running Kitkat.
I had no problems with kitkat, if it lost the connection it automatically connected again when I was back in an area with a signal. But this has got me beat, a new sim card and too many roms to count but still the same problem. I am a lorry driver and cover the whole of Scotland and signal is patchy at best and it's annoying to find out later on in the day that data was off and you didn't receive any messages or emails.. Some of them important..

I have exactly the same problem.
I'm from Spain.
I've discovered that if i set network type to LTE it seems to work right.
Today I've moved from blisspop to temasek.
The 3g reconnect doesn't work, as always.
I turn data and wifi off when I sleep so tomorrow I will confirm if LTE works also with temasek.
my connection has always been set on LTE but never makes any difference
At the weekend I installed the official OxygenOs, I have been driving all day and had to reboot the phone 4 times because of this problem, I did half wish that when an official release came it would maybe sort out the problem but no joy. So I can only think it's to do with the oneplus. I'm at a loss now and seriously don't want to go back to kitkat but it looks like this will be the only solution to the problem..

I've tested this night again and if I set network to LTE.
The test I've done is.
- Turn off data and wifi before to sleep.
- Turn off only data when I woke up.
The connection was successful almost inmediately.
Greetings. I ran into similar issue with the CM12s update.
Once I lose the mobile signal for whatever reason, the data connection is not restored. Only way to regain it, is by restarting the phone (haven't tested airplane mode). Sometimes even if I leave WiFi on for long time (overnight), I will not have data connection after turning off the WiFi. I use HSPA connection only, not LTE.
I can not recall having this issue on KitKat. Issue was on the first CM12s update and remains on the second one, both were installed clean, so clean install of the ROM will not fix it. I am not using any custom ROMs or kernels, only TWRP recovery.
Has anyone had such issue and maybe found a solution to this?

Did you ever get this sorted? I've been having this issue, luckily I always have Wi-Fi at home/uni but there are times when it just won't find a Data connection. This happened right after the CM12 update :/

Well decided to a bit of searching, if you go into Settings -> Mobile Network Settings -> Network Operators and manually choose the network rather than the Auto Search option, it seems to have worked for me for the time being.
I am on the same boat as OP. The problems started after updating to Lollipop.
If anyone has found a solution, please let me know. I read about someone installing a 44S modem, but I'm unsure if this will permanently change system files (I wouldn't want it to) and I'm therefore hesitant.

Random wifi drop and reconnect Android 6.0.1

Hello,
I'm posting this elsewhere too to cover a greater user base in the hope this is a more widespread issue among us s6 MM users.
This happens with most wifi points and isn't down to signal strength and is random. My phone will freeze briefly which is frustrating enough and normally whilst checking twitter or something then I glance up to see no icon for wifi or data... then 4G appears.. then wifi reconnects. This has certainly come into play since MM.
When I upgraded to 6 I did OTA. Felt it wasn't as fast as it should be and reset. Still not convinced I used Samsung smart switch to wipe clean and flash clean.
Am I alone with this glitch? It happens most days.

Never really had any problems with wifi tbh, I think your possible option is to do a fresh firmware flash through odin.
Have tried a network settings reset so let's see if that helps ?

Hmm it's not so frequent so far but has happened maybe 3 times since I posted this.

It's still happening sadly.. starting the process of moving data off the phone in preparation for a factory reset from settings.
Annoying thing is. This was a clean Samsung smart switch wipe, download and flash! If anything the fault should never error have occurred!
I'll try the reset and see.
Oh and it happens on other wifi AP's too, not just my home router.

Ok all things backed up and reset done last night. I did contrmplate reset on the phone itself but opted to use smart switch again.
Restored my data inc apps and seemingly stable so far... only time will tell...

Still happening but once maybe twice a day...getting annoying now.. can only hope Nougat fixes this damn issue.

This is starting to get on my nerves....just happened and phone rebooted from it....
This is so annoying I'm tempted to use an iPhone 5c until Nougat is released....

Ok.. there might..just might be a break through.. since this I've had virgin tv anywhere crash without the app even being open. So it would prompt saying tv app has stopped working report crash or cancel. So I thought this would be a good idea to have an app clear out including this one. Booted into recovery menu and chose to wipe cache (to keep data!) And touch wood the phone has behaved itself since.....
4 months of pain and annoyance over potentially one app...

Nope...even after removing apps that obtain other ip addresses it still does it.. either it's the android os itself ok my phone that will resolve itself after nougat releases or its hardware. I don't recall this happening on lollipop, only marshmallow.

It's almost as if the phone disconnects like it's ready to sleep...
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Right... in case others spot this I have switched to the wifi setting that doesn't put the wifi into sleep mode.. I have now chosen the option to keep wifi on (consumes battery) and this seems to have worked so far...
Ive yet to have a crash/freeze since.. lets hope this is it finally!!
Iphone can stay in the cupboard for a while yet !

I had a simular issue. I lost The WiFi connection from time to time. It just lost the connection and reconnected again. The problem was eventually caused by a very crowded WiFi situation.
I placed a WiFi repeater inside my roam and this fixxed the problem.
You should check the WiFi Signal strenght with an App.
i have the same issue on everysingle rom i tried except cyanogen and miui so it an issue on sam software (happens also on j7 2016 )
