Note 3 camera grainy spots - Galaxy Note 3 General

Like the title says I'm having a problem with camera when I take pictures on night.
I put something on front of the camera sensor to take a full black picture but instead what I took was millions of tiny spots.
Anyone else having this problem too?

tapatalk compresses the pictures but here is how it looks on my pc screen.
why isn't full black?
here is the original:

Looks like regular high-ISO noise to me...
Set the ISO value to 100 and see if they still show up.

At ISO 100 spots are smaller but still some visible zooming.
Is this normal, why isn't plain black instead?
http://imgur.com/rS8FflI

It's normal. It's a common thing in photography.
The sensor is what's causing it.
Essentially, all camera sensors are made from one slab, the center is the highest quality and goes into a Full-Frame DSLR Camera such as the EOS 1D and 5D MKII. The next ring goes to Semi-Professional APS-C DSLRs as the EOS 70D. Next ring goes to the mid-range DSLRs as the EOS 600D. Fourth ring goes to low-range DSLRs as the 1000D and the better Compact Camera's. Next one to the cheap compact cams. The remnants are used in tiny Smartphone 1/3.2 sensors.
A full-frame sensor is 35mm. APS-C is 16.7mm, and the one in a smartphone is 3.2mm. The bigger the sensor, the better the detail and lesser the noise.
As such, the sensor in a smartphone is the lowest quality available in digital photography.
Now, the ISO setting determines the amount of noise. ISO decides how sensitive to light the sensor is. ISO 100 has the least noise, and every step increases it. On a APS-C in semi-professional DSLR's, this means you start seeing grain on 3200 ISO. In a smartphone, the sensor is so tiny you get grain at 100 already.
There's nothing you can do about it entirely, the best is to keep the ISO at the lowest setting possible at all times. (This increases the time the shutter needs to stay open, so in low light this might mean you get a shutter speed of 8 seconds or more. Keep that in mind.)
There's nothing wrong with your phone, it's just that the sensor in these devices is just made from the worst part of a sensor slab.
It might be a bit more comforting to put it this way:
My 1500 euro Canon EOS 70D, with an 1100 euro EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM does this:
(The prices aren't there to boast, they're there to show what kind of camera it is, as I know this is not a photography forum and people here don't know the difference in camera's by name.)
100 ISO (100%, image cropped)
3200 ISO (100%, image cropped)
12800 ISO (100%, image cropped) (Nobody in their sane mind uses this setting. I had no idea my camera even went this high, I absolutely never go above 6400, and even then I never go above 800 unless I have no other alternative, and only above 3200 in the direst of circumstances...)
You can see the grain in the 3200 starting to appear, and in 12800 it's horrible.
Hope that clears it up a bit

Thank you so much for your explanation, everything clear now.

Any comments on how it performs with in your house pictures and kids?

Much of what is compared is outdoor pics which are not important to me. I am worried about indoor pictures and with kids, I can say the G2 I was just using and returned was not very good. Lots of noise, motion blur, even with lights on in my kitchen for example it would default to like 2200 ISO and made everything grainy.
Any comments on Nexus 5.
Plan to buy it today
thanks
Well ill let you compare.
I took 2 shots at night in a lamp lit room. This will make the flash kick in.
I took one with flash and another in HDR. The HDR one actually made the room the "right" colour (as in what I see with my eyes) whilst the flash makes everything white.
Perhaps hdr quality is lower? What do you think?

I personally dislike using the on-board flash on the N5 (or any phone or camera for that matter) because it's so bright and washes out your subject. The HDR feature is nice to have, but requires a steady hand to keep the images sharp.
Of the shots I've taken with my N5 indoors under low light, the phone bumps the ISO up to 1624. This is in a room at night with a single desk lamp on (photo faces the room, not the desk). So naturally those shots were fairly grainy.
I've taken a few in the kitchen and the ISO sits under 200, so those shots are much more crisp. The N5 adjusts for the lighting pretty well, so unless your kitchen is quite dim, I would say you'll find the N5 to be an improvement.
OK thanks.
To be honest was looking at the Z1 also and what I read is also not so good. I would rather go Nexus 5 over any other Android just worried about the 8M camera. Was trying to stay away from the Lumia 1020 despite it has the best camera. My perfect situation would be a Nexus with 20Meg camera and xenon flash.

for me it is a mixed bag : at school i took pictures of some course material and at home of my dog and they turned out great
http://i.imgur.com/CSvJKkv.jpg
However, i took a pic today inside a shopping center and the focus was off (it seems it focused on the background insted of the subject even if i manually selected the area)
I hope the new camera app will solve the focusing and relative slow shutter.
I guess it depends what you're planning to use the camera for. If it's for taking legitimate photos that you might want to print, I'm not sure if the N5 will fit the bill. But if that were the case then why not just invest in a point-and-shoot or even an entry level dSLR. They have become very powerful and quite affordable that it's a good option for any casual photographer.
If you're like me and just use your phone to capture random moments without needing to carry a point-and-shoot in your pocket at all times, then the N5 is good for this. Not the best camera on a phone out there, but coming from the N4 it's a huge improvement (although, that's not saying much). Plus, Google is supposedly working on a new camera api that will support RAW photos. Something to consider.

New 4.4.1 camera? Reverting back to the old camera?

Is it simply just the apk that's all the difference? Because I think the camera is complete [email protected] compared to before

No its not just the apk.... to revert camera properly/fully, revert to 4.4.0
What crap about it?

I think he means in regards to noise. I have noticed it my self as well but it is negligible in my opinion as I like the faster focus and shutter speed from before makes it possible to get a lot of pictures I missed.

I feel like the overall speed has increased, but the focus is terrible. Under slightly low light situations, the camera just doesn't feel like focusing properly. Also there are a lot of noise in the photos taken. Also auto-flash isn't working properly. There are situations where you would have expected flash to kick on but it doesn't; leading to horribly dark photos.
My Note 2 had a much better camera...

extremely low light condition this morning(without a flash).. are you sure that its just you not knowing how to use a camera properly? it a bit more than just point and shoot. btw, autofocus is overrated, learn to focus yourself.

I assure you, it's not user error. I'm taking pictures exactly like how I took them when I had a Nexus S, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2.
When I take test pictures in my room when it's a bit dark, the camera focus just doesn't work and keeps returning RED focus circle.
My other problem is the auto flash. Trying to take pictures of a piece of paper with writing on it in the dark, the camera won't utilize flash; hence it doesn't focus because it just looks dim and the flash support light doesn't light up the text so camera doesn't know to focus on the text. Manually turning on flash makes it somewhat better.
When in optimal lighting situations, the camera works fine. Issues are with auto focus/flash in dim/dark situations
--------- ACTUALLY I think I found my issue.
It's my case. Spigen Slim Armor. The camera area protrudes and I guess it affects light sensors, thus messing with the focus. I took my case off and was able to have it work appropriately.

Zoom Lense

Love my camera on my phone and the sheer number of photos I take proves it. From time to time I have seen advertisement for smartphone "Zoom Lenses" and i was wondering if anyone had any or had any recommendations for them or even against them.
I'm sure you all know what I mean but i'm referring to this.

If you are actually going to BUY a lens for your phone... Spend the money and get a real camera.
you use cam phone because it's portable and you can pull it out for a quick shot... once you put a lens... you lose both. + you end up looking like an idiot when you missed the shot.

Have a real camera, it's at home. This i can throw in my backpack. i'm obviously not going to use it for rush shots, but things like the view from my office etc. Besides 40 dollars for the zoom, 1400 (give or take) for a good DSLR.
Right, and my 6d, which was 2000 takes much better pictures then s5. But who am I to say anything I buy anything that I find mildly interesting.

If it works a a regular telephoto and not a zoom lens you will experience a black circle around your shot until you zoom in to only the telephoto area. Here is someone else's experience with adding a telephoto to a camera:
- Install the lens.
- Turn on the camera.
- Oh my God, it's just a big black circle. What's wrong?
- Zoom in.
- As you zoom in, the circle gets bigger and bigger until finally the entire picture is visible in the viewfinder.
- Ah, that's better.
- Turn off the camera.
- Turn it back on.
- Oh my God, it's just a big black circle. What's wrong?
- Repeat.
- Then you decide you want to take a picture of something that is nearby.
- Zoom out.
- Oh my God, it's just a big black circle.
- Remove the lens.
- Can take your close up picture.

I have to admit, while I like the camera, I feel like my S6 Edge runs circle around the S7 Edge's camera.
However my mind completely changed once I went into the back of my complex with no light and took this shot. Long Exposure.
1st and 2nd Pic is from GS7E

I would also say that I don't see any major improvement form the s6. Maybe it's just me.

Mooooo
Kinda low light
The watch cow
Uploading to xda degrades the quality alot
Camera seems to do just as good as my Note 5 in regular light, maybe a slight bit more grainy when zoomed in. The difference is all in low light and capturing shadows and such. Big improvement.
If the Note 6 can retain the 16MP from the N5 , and also keep the dual pixel from this, it will have a lot of potential.
Scanning documents in artificial light is a big improvement. Especially with optical image stabilization. My barcode reading app finishes decoding before I finish getting the phone in position to read it.
Coming from the s6 edge to the note 5 and now to the s7 edge there are some improvements. Biggest comes from low light pictures. A lot of pictures I use to take in artificial light or low light would always come out grainy now it comes out much better and pics at night, you can actually tell what you are seeing in the pictures. Also the speed of the shutter seems faster or at least the auto focus speed. Makes a significant difference when trying to get a good shot in a pinch.
completely unedited. Amazing camera almost as good as my DSLR.

Took this while driving on the expressway/highway/whatever you call it where you live, going about 85 mph.
I took these pictures at the AZ Desert Botanical Garden a few nights ago... no flash. They have a special exhibit going on right now with all this special led lighting at night. No filter or effects on any of these pictures...
Very nice!

Low light

At the club, at the bar, or just in your mom's basement, nighttime is when you come out to play. Rate this thread to express how the OnePlus 6T's camera performs when no or low light is present. A higher rating indicates that the camera sensor "sees" lots of light in dim conditions, and that the resulting photos have minimal noise. A higher rating also indicates that when the flash fires, the resulting photo is evenly-lit without any bright spots.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
OnePlus stock camera app has extreme processing limitations and causes the camera to under perform. I would give this section 5 stars simply if using Google Camera to take pictures and video, but I know most users will not do this, so the stock camera performance gets a 3 star.
Very beautiful photos. I use GCam and the pictures are partially better than from Note 9.
It is strange to me that people complain about the native camera app of 6t. This is one of the few bright point of the phone.
Look at the two photos below, I took last night from Sagrada Familia, Barcelona. One without the night mode, and one with the night mode.
The GCam does not produce any better result in any situation for me. It maybe because I am using an older version of the GCam? I don't know. But I bought the phone with the hope of having close to Pixel Camera experience, while it is not close except for the low light situations.
I expect others to publish their photos here, when they claim GCam works amazingly or when they say the night mode of 6t cam doesn't work well.

Flying back to Oahu from Maui tonight.

Rated it at 3 stars - average - as that's about where it stands. Nothing to get excited about. If you need a decent low light image, use a real camera.
Awesome photos in low light
I went for a party last weekend and have taken a lot of photos in a night club and all the photos came perfectly fine. I felt I don't need DSLR anymore when you get classy pics in your mobile then who would need a DSLR.
I got it for a very discounted price. If anyone is looking to purchase one, then you can visit an online site called S World Electronics
This is an innovative device
Great pictures in low light
Previously I used to have One Plus 3, then I have upgraded to 6T. The low light pictures taken from One Plus 6T is lit
Last week we had a house party and we had a low light setup. The photos we took from my phone was far better than the photos taken from other Android phones at the party.
One doesn't need a DSLR now, unless he is a professional though.
Not very good camera app ...like for the most apps!!
With gcam and night sight the night photos are awesome!
No need for Gcam the OP6T stock is fine for me.
