[Q] Phone said I had a virus while on this site? - General Questions and Answers

I got a brand new HTC One a day ago, was on this site and I got a popup saying something along the lines of
"Your android has a virus press ok to delete it" with the options of Cancel and Ok.
I did press Cancel cause I thought it was a fake popup, but I do have Lookout installed and the lookout site scanners says that I've visited 22 sites, and 21 were safe so there was 1 site that I visited that was unsafe I guess, but is there anyway for me to see the sites scanned on Lookout?
I do not believe the 'virus' came from xda developers, or maybe I don't have one at all but I am paranoid about these type of things.
I did do a Lookout scan and it said everything was fine..
Will a factory reset do the trick incase I do have a virus? Or will I need to reformat?
Thanks.

I don't think it's a virus nowadays most of the websites push a popup saying that you have a virus so plz start the scan if you click on it???
You will be redirected to their website saying that you have to download the app.....!
So don't worry enjoy your browsing

I just got the same popup while visiting this site on another android phone. I'm pretty sure the problem is coming from one of the ad providers on this site.
will post a pic if anyone is interested

Then plz post the pics !!!

I wonder what kind of site your visiting... Anyways, just ignore the popup and hit the back button

No no no no
That's a fake virus alert. It's a piece of javascript that sends the text to the browser, so the message looks like it's coming from the system. You can use an actual computer and get the same pup-up, and it will look very real because it's coming up in an actual browser message instead of an advertisement or pop-up or something similar. It's a small piece of javascript, click cancel every time, and try not to visit sites like that mmkay?
Edit: after reading jammC's post about an "ad-provider" causing the message that's very possible. There could be a piece of javascript embedded into one of the advertisements. It's not uncommon.

Its simple! These "fakes" tell you there is a virus (when there isn't) and install their own software, which are actually spies. So becareful when browsing.. After all, you are on the internet

Kaspersky says trojan in SuperOneClick

Hi all,
I am a bit confused. I see lots of good responses to SuperOneClick and I would certainly like to root my SGS, but when I want to download the tool, Kaspersky kicks in and says it has a trojan. The downloaded file is then not usable anymore.
I've searched the net, but don't see anything about it. Anyone know what's up?
Why does Kaspersky say that SuperOneClick got a trojan? Tried several versions from this XDAsite.
Probably because phone carriers/manufacturers paid them to say so. Just disable kaspersky then download.

I do not believe that carriers/manufacturers payed Kaspersky to give that warning....Someone with more information?
Either what the other user said or a false positive, if you are worried test it through VirusTotal, just upload a file and itll scan it through a bunch of scanners.
reason why is
take it from someone whos knows anti viruses the one click root program alters boot sequence on an item doesn't have to be your computer virus's do the same some don't but the really nasty ones do so any thing that does such a thing is percived as a threat

OK, not trying to be a gramme nazi, but your mini block of text is not coherent. I actually would like to know what you mean.

Sorry force of habit when typing quickly.... What i was trying to say is that anti-viruses percive anything that changes code, I.E. boot sequence or O.S. (Operating System) main code as a threat. Computer viruses change code to do their damage, a trojan will change code to make a back door in to your computer or just delete code slowly till your computer is unbootable. Rooting your phone is to change the code originally set on your phone, so most anti-viruses will see one-click roots as a virus since it does all the work automatically and won't recognize simple zip files sinces they are lines of code that aren't being run in sequence to change code.......... any questions?

I doubt very much there is a virus, seems like a false message, although i personally dont use any other anti-virus on PC apart from AVG and Lookout on my android, there are no viruses on this site, or that AVG has detected
Then tell me whats this fullscreen popup only appearing here..
After showing up and pushing back-button Browser FC
It only happens on android!

Be aware 'Scam' App : U need 2 read this ! It may cost u money if u don't!!!!

Hiya,
I'm bagofbits and new to these forum's and was not sure how to contact anyone at XDA so after some after advice from LUFC (forum moderator) here is my situation.
I have a wildfire s and been viewing those forums, during the last couple of days since the change over from android market to google playground or whatever it's called these days, I've been getting a popup app in my status bar saying please download 'battery supercharger' . I've been just clearing my status bar but it just kept coming back.
Today by mistake i downloaded it and got loads of texts within minutes and ended up with a charge of £4.99, I text 'STOP' to the number given. My network provider(3) can't help and I've mailed google help about it and they have logged it and are getting back to me.
Also a number of post's on the web about it...
Anyway enough rambling, I've searched the wildfire s forum and can't see any mention of it, just thought that it would be useful to post something about it so nobody else falls victim to this.
Give me a thanks if u could please.
Cheers
Oh might be an idea to check recent downloads you have made that contain ad's that may harbor this scam.

The ad you saw in your status bar used ad over the air function.
There are some apps which will detect apps using the add. Method. And will give you the ability to uninstall it.

Try airpush detector from the market to find out what the offending app is.
Never txt stop to a random number that's how they get ya, school boy error
THISIS50 if its hot its here
School boy error
Just to set the record straight this 'thing' auto en-roles u 'before' u text stop and it applies the charge!
If I'm guilty of anything it's downloading by mistake !
Google it and see what others are saying bout it, I was just trying to help and your criticism ain't justified.

Unfortunately this is true, you have not stopped the messages - just confirmed to the spammers that the number is live and real. 3 may be able to help you by blacklisting the numbers you are getting messages from - also have a look here if the messages persist.
This is a problem that is by no means limited to the Wildfire S - recently I recognised an app on my friend's Samsung Galaxy Ace as being malware - it was also generating notifications about some kind of battery optimizer. I managed to remove it before she accidentally signed up to anything.
Regarding the app, try some apps like Lookout Mobile Security and BitDefender . If you run a scan with these, they may find the offending app and help you to remove it. Good luck!
solution to battery supercharger text costs
saw the two text messages yesterday, spoke to Vodafone told them to block any charges today, up to which time charges hadn't gone through. So hopefully this will cost me nothing.
even if they had placed the charge, I would have asked Vodafone not to pay it, and kicked up a fuss until the agreed not to do so, or carry the cost themselves. Anybody with a mobile phone contract is in a very strong position at the moment I have noticed, getting lots of freebies off them.
thanx for ur advice
but i think it is not harmful

Malware Pop Up - OK

I just visited this forum form my Nexus 5 and a pop up stating that I had malware appeared. It said if I wanted to remove it. I was gonna click 'NO', then I thought "Well, this is xda-developers..." so I... pressed 'YES'.
Nothing happened. Closed the tab and nothing seems to have happened. Did I install malware? Did I get an infection of any kind?
Thanks.
Hi,
Something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696660&page=16 ?
If yes, report in the thread above (there are another threads about that but this one is the main about XDA and ads).

A malware won't tell you that it is a malware. Also, if you dont have an Antimalware installed, why did you hit yes? common sense. it was maybe an ad. next time hit the back button on your phone and never touch a pop up

If you are using custom Rom, it likely has a modified hosts file that blocks redirection from ads and nothing just happened.
did it take you to another page out of xda? do you have new icons on the home screen? if so, download Airpush detector and run it. it will detect fake apps
I dont think anything installed on your phone unless you saw something downloading. It was an advertisement looking for click or to sell you a fake antimalware solution.

I'm using stock ROM. 4.4.2. It didn't redirect me anywhere. I ended up running a couple of anti malwares which found nothing. I then restored from my most recent backup. Didn't wanna take any chances...
At least now I know these messages are fake...

well done. extra safety is always better.
It's one of those stupid popup adverts that - when it works - takes you to a page pretending to do a scan, then says something like "We found 247 viruses on your phone! Install Dave's Antivirus 2014 to remove them!"
I expected more of XDA.

I had a friend with a similar issue - I turned him on to HideNinja VPN and it helped him. It's the only thing I can think of that may help. I'd suggest closing all tabs for all browsers. Delete the browsers you can that you don't prefer to use. Restart the device, install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cryptninja.vpn make sure the app is configured and running properly, then try running your browser. Make sure no alternate settings in your browser could be created jumbling or smashing. Give the "Desktop Version" of the site a try too.

Ok, about chrome i found out that cyanogenmod's browser is ten times faster!!! And for the ADS i wasn't aware that those were intrusive ADS(i thought that the option block popup was broken XD ), so i want to recommend all of you to do this http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/blocking-ads-in-android/ scroll down a bit and you'll find a tutorial to create an host file, normal ads aren't blocked but the intrusives one i noticed that this little file blocks them very well
