[Q] Question about 2G phone on 4G network - General Questions and Answers

Hello Q&A,
I've recently been looking at the multitude of inexpensive Chinese phones available on the market, I'm attracted to them because of the price and some of the sexy designs they have.
Of course, they all say 2G 850/900/1800/1900mhz and 3G WCDMA.
I was planning to use MetroPCS (which has a 4G LTE network, I would post link but it isn't letting me.) and I don't know if the 2G phone will work with their 4G plan.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just don't understand this aspect of phones at all.
Obviously I wouldn't get 4G speeds, but could I get 2G speeds on a 4G LTE network?
Thanks for any help, it's very appreciated.

US TMO Sensation, 3G internationally?

Does anyone know for certain whether the US Sensation will operate at 3G internationally? I know it's got the 2100 frequency, but it appears that the phone may only connect in 4G or 2G mode. If I get a local SIM in France or Italy, for example, will it operate at 3G data speed, like my Vibrant does?
Has anyone actually verified this on the ground in Europe?
Thanks.
It'll do 3G. Tmobile's 4G is actually 3G/HSPA+, but thanks to their wonderful marketing, they started using the 4G name to get ahead of AT&T.

Yeah, I understand the marketing overhype in the naming, but I've seen a bunch of posts that seem to indicate the phone is either operating in 4G or 2G mode. I happen to live in a weak 4G/3G location, and all I've seen on the phone display is 4G or 2G. Is the 4G icon being displayed when it's really connecting 3G? Has anyone seen a 3G icon on this phone?
I called both TMO and HTC tech support but neither one could answer this question with certainty.
I may be over worrying, but I really don't want to get to Italy later this year and be stuck with EDGE the whole trip.
It's got the 2100 frequency for WCDMA, so you should be fine in europe.

Some of us are under the impression that Tmobile locked it to the 4G icon on the phone. They did the same with some other phones. When root is achieved & you are able to swap out the icons you'll probably see a difference.

Confused??!?!

Hi im waiting for my sensation toarrive....My confusion comes from References to Sensation 4g...In the uk we dont get 4g so mine will not be the 4g,But tools like Temp root all refer to the 4g and dont mention the 3g?
I dont want to brick my shiny phone when it arrives so is anyone able to ellaborate any diffs between the 4g and the uk version? Is the 4g GSM or CDMA? Is the 4g on tmobile??
Sorry if this has been asked i dont want to seem like an arse
The guides work for both, just that most users on here seem to be American. The European model isn't 4G
It is basically just a naming difference, american carriers like to advertise as being "4G" even when they are only operating 3G networks, and the phone is only 3G capable (like T-Mobile US - they call HSPA+ "4G", which is a technology most modern networks have implemented at this time and is most definitively "3G").
I don't think there is any GSM/UMTS/LTE-capable phone from a major manufacturer available in the market (or even announced) at this point. There are, however, some USB datasticks that are LTE ("4G") capable.
And while the UK may lag a bit behind in LTE coverage compared to some countries of continental europe (although it really doesn't matter all that much at this point), LTE trials are being conducted in the UK at this time.
The Sensation and Sensation 4G are both capable of exactly the same speeds & standards.
Don't be fooled by all the "4G"-marketing, it is exceptionally meaningless.
There are a couple here in the US. Verizon and MetroPCS both have LTE.

Both are CDMA/LTE-carriers, not really comparable.
AT&T has started building a LTE-network as well, but their phones advertised as "4G" are still regular GSM/UMTS-phones (typically HSPA+ capable).
Which further reinforces my point, "4G" has become a meaningless marketing-term slapped on anything to suggest extraordinary speed to the uninformed.
Thanks guys,Great help as usual! Confusing though when US call it 4G and UK call is HSDPA or 3G+

Just wondering.. Since UK considers the 10mbs+ some people get as 3g still, what speeds are considered 4G there? Not trying to flame, just curious.

It's not about speed, but technology - only LTE is considered "true" 4G over here, while HSPA is still very clearly a 3G technology.
Where I live, providers advertise with HSPA+ and LTE directly, A1 marketed "air to fiber" to highlight their supposedly fast backend.

And you folks are much more accurate in your description. Have to love marketing BS here in the States.

I see... So maybe carriers are are advertising 4G speeds and not technology. Makes sense to me. Are speeds there about the same on "3g+ "?

[Q] New AT&T LTE phones need a new sim can it be used in old phone?

I noticed that the new LTE phones on AT&T need a new sim to access the LTE network; I'm coming from an iPhone 4 which of course is a micro-sim, anyone know if they can be cut down and used in an iPhone to access the HSPA+ network?
i think so but you still wont get LTE just hspa+ or 3g its just that the phone is going to have an LTE radio so it can use it
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Straight Talk AT&T SIM

I recently just migrated to ST from T-Mobile because I had very low network speeds at home with T-Mobile. Im all setup with the service and am getting "expected" speeds around 5-8mbps down in my area and other towns.
I did purchase the ATT LTE Compatible SIM.
Now here comes the confusion...
Does Straight Talk provide lte speeds in LTE coverage areas for ATT? I've been in areas that should have LTE coverage from ATT but my ST speed was nothing close.
Im running CleanROM ACE 5.0 (awesome) and don't have an option to change my network mode now to lte/gsm/wcdma... Although I don't think it might matter from what ive been reading in other forums.
I really just want to know if its ST not having lte or my phones modem/apn configuration the problem?
I feel like a leech asking a paragraph question and not completely browsing other threads. Even though the other threads dont seem to have a concise answer to this.
I would greatly appreciate even a simple link to a specific post that will clarify this issue.

[Completed] Which network the best option for a HSPA phone in the US?

I bought a Samsung Galaxy J7, SM-J700H dual sim International version. This phone doesn't have 4G LTE rather it has HSPA. Nowadays 4G LTE is taking over in the US especially. Now I am with AT&T but I am looking for the best service provider which has the largest and fastest HSPA+ in the US because I don't know. I'm not particularly happy that I can't have the fastest network as in 4G LTE but I like the phone for what it is. So can someone please advice me as to which top service providers are the best option in the USA which have the largest and fastest HSPA network (i'm obviously not asking as far as data plans and things like that). I never had a phone without 4G LTE so I am not familiar with this nework. Thank you very much and I'm looking forward to your replies.

Hello,
Sorry we don't reside in your area so we really can't comment on best network right there. You need to figure it out yourself with the help of friends or family.
