Here is the full question: Does modern smartphones protect the battery making energy bypass baterry when it is full charged? (like most laptops do)
This is related to: is it bad to keep my phone plugged to the wall charged for 15 hours? is it true that doing this makes the baterry go 100%-99%-100% and it "drains" battery's life taking cycles?
Is this the same for all devices? I have a Samsung Galaxy S Advance (i9070)

The charging circuit lowers the charge to a trickle, to keep battery charged.
I find I can get an hour or two more phone time if I keep charging after it says 100%.
If every thing is working right you shouldn't damage the phone or battery.

It is float charging at that point. Battery levels are determined by the battery's voltage. A fully charged lithium ion battery sits at about 4.2 volts while a nearly drained one would sit at about 3.3 volts. This is how your phone knows when to stop charging the battery. So when it gets to the highest point, it stops and lets it trickle out a bit. Then when a little bit of energy has bled off, the charging circuitry kicks back on until it reaches the threshold again. Then the process repeats. It does this to maintain a healthy battery level without overcharging. Hope this helped

Will constantly charging a phone result in reduced battery life?
Constantly charging a phone will not affect battery life because it's just float charging. Float charging keeps batteries charged but not too charged, drained but not too drained. Of course lithium ion batteries will just eventually wear out because they're good for about 300-400 full charge and discharge cycles. But that's FULL charging and discharging. If it's float charging, the battery will stay good for years.

Hi i dont know why my battery isnt completely charging! or the battery charger info is broken! anyone else not charging to 100%?
It probably hits 100% then starts draining slightly to keep it from over charging. Mine gets to 99% then I unplug and replug it and it hits 100. But that has happened with a lot of devices for me.
Happens on my evo as well. You can get around it by flashing a kernel that does trickle charging which I'm sure we'll get for the tf sooner or later.

I would NOT use an sbc kernal on this battery, they are known to shorten battery life. Cell phone batteries are a dime a dozen, this thing is both non-user replacable and most likely not cheap.
Pretty sure its a lithium ion battery inside and you shouldnt overcharge those. You're best off keeping it between 30-90% and doing a drain and full charge once a month to prolong its life. The charger should stop charging when the battery is full on it's own anyways if you do leave it plugged in. I think it's a European law to have that as a safety feature, probably an American law for this too. So if the charger is staying hot a few minutes after your device has hit 100% charge, you've got a problem. Mine does get to 100% but yes it takes a while to top up, that's just the way these batteries operate.

Your phone will stop charging when it reaches 100%. Don't believe anyone saying an 8 hour, or overnight charge is needed when it comes to lithium batteries. Over charging and over discharging lithium batteries is dangerous which is why they have built in circuits to prevent this.
yeah, After having purchased an electric bike kit last year, I've studied up alot on lithium batteries, and the article and it's author doesn't mention anything about a BMS (or battery management system).
I'm sure every cellphone has a BMS making sure that the battery does not overcharge or undercharge. It will either stop charging the battery and will shut off the device when battery gets critical. 100% charge does not mean 100% but actually is 80% then the BMS stops charging, and 0% is actually 20% then BMS shuts of device.
Yes you shouldn't be doing a "full discharge" on lithium batteries, and yes you shouldn't leave the battery on the charger for more than a week (overnight is fine is you're charging on a daily basis though)
The best way to exercise and increase a lithium batteries total life cycle from say an OEM suggested life time of 500 cycles to upwards of 3000 cycles, is to start recharging at about 50%. This way you extend the batteries life. Hope this helps.
So I'm starting to remember how weird the charging of Note 10.1 is. I left it chargong for a couple hours and it barely charged, course it was on.
Do people "Power off" there notes before they charge it, or just plug it in and walk away?
Is there an app or some setting to auto "hibernate" or even shut off when it gets plugged in and not used? Just seems like an annoying habit to have to power it off regularly.
Note take a long long time to charge 5 - 7 hours for a full charge.
I always care mine while on, usually wifi and it charges from 20% to full in about 5 hours using AC. If you're charging via USB and it's powered on it will barely charge (its charging at 1/4 the current).
If you're using AC and it's still taking that long, you must have a battery hungry app running, try killing a) apps before you charge.

mine usually takes 5-6 hours to get fully recharged from 15-20%
I usually just leave on in the night. Wake up and it's fully charged.

You may be able to charge faster, I know there's a fix for the SGS3 but faster charging causes more heat which will kill your battery VERY quickly...
Unlike the SGS3 you can't just get a replacement battery and swap out easily... Slower charging will maximise your batteries life....
Yep, forget about charging quickly. The battery is high capacity so it should take maximum 5 hours. It may charge faster with a different adapter but that will shorten your battery life in the long run. If you want, you can buy a battery pack type portable charger I guess...

I mean, charging more than 100%, charging over the 3-4 hours needed, charging for 7-8 hours..
I think it won't effect it cuz i charge my phone from overnight too.nothing happens.

They said once it reachs 100% to stop charging. It can have an negative impact on your battery. Lithium technology or not. But I do it too. I think it just shorten the life span on a slow scale.

Here is the thing...
Yes the phone has a voltage shut off when it reached 100%.
However, it will start to drain battery immediately once it cuts off charging. Even when idle with teh screen off it uses some power. And once it drops to 99% it will start charging again until it reached 100%.
Depending on your set up and how much the phone runs when idle it would keep 'topping off' the battery several times overnight. This is harsh on the battery.
So it's not like once it cuts off charging it stays off until it's unplugged and replugged in. It'll keep charging everytime it drops to 99%

I use the tablet a few hours a day (say, 6 hours) and among those most of the time (say 4 hours) it is on my desk so I can plugin the charger if I want.
My question is in this case what's the recommended behavior, for the purpose of saving battery cycles (I mean, say, after a year, the battery life per charge is reduced less compared with when it was new)? Would it be better to use the whole day without charging it, and charge at night? Or Charge it whenever I can?

Keep it plugged in. The battery will not overcharge and it wont effect the battert cycles as much as draining it and then charging it. Its better to do shallow charges (above 50%) than deep charges.
