Differences in battery life - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I have an 8 gig moto g UK version on KitKat 4.42 I have noticed some days my battery life will be superb like today and others not as good I will post screenshots today's battery life is the second charge after running it down to 0%..

1: Your cell coverage seems to be kind of bad sometimes, it cna cause battery drain
2: Your phone is awake most of the time even with screen off, you should check your wakelocks
3: There is a thread about a mysterious battery drain, which unfortunately I got as well http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50467389

Hi thanks for the reply yeah my network is bad in this area never more than 2 bars of signal, I was running wakelock detector on 4.3 but obviously Google stopped the user from being able to read process data. I do have gsam battery monitor installed I will see if that turns anything up. I hope Motorola fixes the battery drain issue soon thanks for your help.

Notice how your battery drain is bad after GPS is used. See the link posted above by the other poster. My posts in that thread refer to GPS as being the culprit. It seems it may be the same in your case.
When you notice the bad battery drain try a reboot. It should fix it until GPS is next used. BTW I have noticed GPS doesn't always cause the drain to start, but it does quite often.
Are you on non-gpe device or gpe.

Hi Scott thanks for the info I didn't notice that I will fully charge tonight and then use the GPS for a little while and then stop using it to see if that causes the drain by the way my phones a standard g non gpe.

A quick update this is today's total battery life with some GPS use and Bluetooth on from 5pm connects to my car stereo.

actually with that signal level I think this is the normal drain, you got quite some screen time as well.

My personal experience is that I only get the drain when I have used GPS but I do not always get it when I have used GPS. Basically to me it seems like some intermittent GPS issue that causes the drain. I had it yesterday and rebooted. But today I have tested gps and all fine again - no drain.
Also have noticed after the latest KitKat update (the tiny 9MB update) that at times GPS can't get a lock.

the device itself is about 10 day old. so can't pinpoint exactly
Seems to be a strange issue. Maybe you should give it some time. If it is not getting any better you should consider rooting and install a better battery app
You could try a factory reset

Battery drain app might give you some ideas, I'm averaging 0.85% hour with location and google now on
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.WazaBe.android.BatteryDrain
There are threads and a bug report with Motorola regarding this. It seems sometimes once GPS is used the battery continues to drain at 1-3% per hour until you reboot.
It may not be the issue in your case but it looks likely as the drain you see when the phone is not awake looks very similar to the problem.
If it drains in airplane mode and the phone shows as never awake then its the same problem.
For now don't use GPS or if you do then reboot directly after.

If you use your camera, then that might be the problem. Google itself noted a bug in Kit Kat that may run down the battery if you use the camera. Do a search on Google for more details...

If you are getting the weird drain issue that seems to be related to GPS then maybe best to use battery saving. Depends his bad you need GPS though. So up to you really.

battery draining fast

I noticed battery draining fast since I installed gravity box. Without even touching the phone in the morning it will go down to 99%
I attached the screenshot of wakelock detector from this morning. an hour commute with just listening to music dropped 15%
You need to be a bit clearer with your reports about 'drain'
Are you reporting 1% battery drop as a 'drain' definitely due to gravitybox?
Are you using a custom rom with a feature conflicting with gravitybox?
Can you uninstall gravitybox and immediately confirm the drain goes away?
Your 15% drop, were you streaming via 3G on your hour commute? If so that sounds reasonable as it works harder to keep the signal
Try betterbatterystats as well to look at other wakelocks

I am on lte but half of my commute i have no signal from being on a train. but usually my phone lasts a day or at least 12 hours now i am only getting 6 hours.
I will try better battery stats and then post a screenshot before uninstall gravity body
I have the same problem. I Ajay lost 3%in one minute after using this for 4 minutes. Something not right with that gravity box. I'll be lucky to get 2.5 hours of screen time compared to my 3.5 I used to get.

Gravity box won't drain your battery.
Not having a signal on the train will tho....big time. Unless you switched to airplane mode? Anytime the phone has to look for a signal, the battery takes a real beating.

rooting does not necessarily mean you will have better or wore battery. Try changing the kernel, stock kernel gives you 3-3.5 hrs SOT normal usage.(unless you use it to read books)
I had 0% drain overnight when i first bough the phone, but after a while 1-3% drain overnight is normal.

There was some problem with old version of KitKat. Google Now constantly was accessing location services and draining the battery like hell. I don't know if it got fixed or not.
Try turning off location and use phone normally.

Different kernels behave differently for everyone's device and usage. You need to experiment yourself.
But before you do, work out what is using your battery first, electricity doesn't just disappear, tends to obey the laws of physics...
Then determine if it's definitely gravity box, or if you're experiencing phone 'usage' as opposed to battery 'drain'
Leave wakelock detector and betterbatterystats for collecting data for much longer. Put your phone down for a while...

Are you performing soft restarts? If so, that's probably the reason. For some reason, Android doesn't take well to soft restarts, so when you soft reset it never initializes properly and you end up with strange things like excessive battery drainage.

Interesting...I've been having erratic drain patterns lately with no visible culprits. I've noticed it happens sometimes after updating gravity box and I always do a soft reboot, so that might explain it. Do you have any more information about it?

I only did 1 softboot.
I think the culprit is google music it drains the battery like crazy. I tried not listening to music on my commute and got to work with 98% battery. With google music I will get to work with 90%

To be honest this looks like phone usage, rather than particularly bad battery 'drain'. Are you expecting that your battery should be 98% if you listen to music while on the move for an hour? Or what would a reasonable expected level be?
Your first post said that an hour commute dropped 15%, now it's dropping 10%? Sounds like an improvement to me.

Idle Battery Drain

Hi,
I'm experiencing quite big idle battery drain, but not always. Sometimes by battery lasts for 3-4 days with minimal usage, but some days it goes down by up to 4% per hour with no usage. I'm sure it's not a rogue app keeping my phone awake and I've done the Google Play Services "fix" in App Ops. I'm running stable crDroid KitKat with stock kernel, and a lot of people don't seem to be having issues.
I've attached some screenshots from Wakelock Detector. It looks to me there is an insane number of wakeups for some reason. Has anyone had anything like this and managed to fix it?
Thanks.
Connectivity service is probably your culprit. It's a very bad battery draining wakelock that happens when you lose network signal and It keeps your phone awake until it finds another signal. Your best option would be to try out a different modem

I think you're right. I was looking at the stats today and I saw a lot of wake-ups by 'RILJ' under phone, which also suggest my issue might be modem-related. I've attached a screenshot for reference.
On a side note, it seems a bit weird how WLD shows a lot of wake-ups by SwiftKey with 'AudioMix'. I've never fully trusted that these apps show accurate stats, especially when it comes to system processes.
But anyway, I'll give a newer modem a try when I have the time and report back.
Thanks again :good:

Have you tried using BBS (better battery stats) to isolate the drain? And also try setting "keep wifi in sleepmode" to never or only when connected. Have heard of that working wonders for some.
And the screenshot thing can be overcome by uploading it to a different site and posting only the links
Preper yourself for NO notifications, if you put WI-FI to sleep.
I have wifi asleep and still get notifications. Maybe a little less frequent, but that's because stamina mode is working better (in my opinion) and only checks once in a while for new notifications

That' s the Queue background data option that is doing that.
So there ARE notifications Vs what you said that there would be none. I rest my case here
MOD EDIT @gregbradley
@ OP, I also ticked the option that other apps may not use wifi for location even when wifi is off. I believe that may also cost you some juice

It's funny how my phone ran normal for the first week now the phone is being drained by Facebook and feedly, I have made no changes in any settings and its happening now. Haven't looked into the problem yet but don't even know is it third party issues lol.
One thing I found out is that the battery tend to drain at a lesser rate if you leave the phone charged for an extra 20 mins or more after hitting 100%. Just a speculation

There is an option where you can make the phone play a sound when is fully charged.

I doubt that the reason we have the same problem is the same, but since I know how to post a screen cap, here's mine:

Why is my idle battery drain so bad if all my wakelocks look fine? (Pie stable)

Getting fine screen on time, but bad standby time. I left my phone idle for more than 10 hours, and everything looks fine...but I'm draining more than 2% per hour doing nothing! When I use the phone normally, idle drain is closer to 3%, with still not specific problem that can be seen. On Oreo stable, it was around 1.5%, which is still bad compared to my iPhone, but not unbearable. I had no SIM installed because it was in my iPhone, but with or without makes no noticeable difference.
Advanced optimization, sleep standby optimization AND adaptive battery also make no noticeable difference in ANY combination on and off.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Edit: You might also notice the VPN icon, it's not a normal VPN (with active, keep-alive connection), but a proxy for those of us living in China. Again, I've tested on or off, no difference, and you can't see it in wakelocks or processes.

Could also be a bad WIFI, seen this before for some 5ghz networks.
Is bbs being optimized in battery settings?
try 2.4ghz wifi if you can (where you have good connection, OR just turn wifi off, so we can rule that out the equation.)
make sure better battery stats is NOT being optimized
and try one more time.

Thanks for those suggestions. I hadn't tried switching to 2.4ghz or un-optimizing better battery stats. Unfortunately, there is no noticeable difference yet again. Turning Wifi off totally used to help a bit in Oreo, but hasn't made any difference at all in Pie.
Having the same issue too. Idle drain is fairly high on pie. Wakelocks are pretty clean too. I'm convinced it's something Google related or it's just the system isn't all that optimized as they want us to believe

Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel a little better. Most people on the internet complaining about Pie drain of course has no idea how to actually check anything beyond Android stock battery stats, so there's no way to corroborate.
I noticed that beta 4 has " * Optimized standby power consumption " listed as a system fix. But I don't want to clean flash in and then clean flash out of beta yet again because all of them have had such horrible touch latency that dozens of users are complaining about. But I'm almost tempted to try it.
Can anyone on beta 4 chime in?

I cleanflashed few days back,no root,locked bootloader. I loose 4% in 7hrs 30 minutes. So it's ok.. with GPS,wifi bluetooth on.
Touch latency is like stable pie.

Thanks for the feedback! But 0.3% / hour? I'm skeptical. I'm not sure that any Android phone has ever been that low draining, ever. Certainly not in my years of experience. I don't think that's possible even with no apps installed. You can't post any wakelock details because you're not rooted... Maybe post a screenshot of your battery usage graph, please?

Thanks. I feel like I'm being really lucky with this device tho.
I will get my root on today, clean flash again and I will just set it up and see where it lands. But I thought no what saves my battery the most is really good reception. The antenna is around 100meters (300 feet) from my house, WiFi is on point aswell (best on 2.4ghz)
So, like I said the bootloader got unlocked, root is on again so everything is fresh.
The smart battery didn't even have time to read apps that's draining battery this is standby usage with stock settings from OnePlus, without any optimizations. Im counting on adaptive battery that it will do its thing after a day or two.
I have around 20 apps installed but the ones that matter for battery is Telegram, instagram, steam.
