I recently bought App Vault, hoping to stow away and hide some applications I didn't exactly want cluttering my application drawer. In the process, I hid the Superuser Permissions application. Unfortunately, little did I know that this application actually disables any hidden applications instead of just hiding them. Now my phone cannot achieve root access, which was needed for the app in order for me to stow applications in the drawer, so I cannot undo my procedure via App Vault. I tried just restoring my latest backup, however, I do not have root access evidently, so I can also not access the clockwork recovery.
Any ideas of how I can fix this debacle?
Thanks for everyones help!
Hrm i'd try reflashing the current ROM your using if it includes the superuser.apk you should be ok. Possibly uninstall the app vault prior to this. Not sure what phone / ROM your running but this way work.
Thanks for the help!
I had to reflash the recovery image, the cyanogen's latest, and the Google apps and I was fine. All worked fine. Now I know not to stow the super user app...
Guys,
Does anyone know of a software package for windows or even an app for the android that will basically lock down the phone so no apps can be installed unless there is a password entered (by I.T. Administrator etc)? We are trying to rollout android phones but would like to limit app installation.
Thanks
Yeah sure remove the VENDING.apk in the system/app folder, root permission is needed for this though, I use a program called root explorer, and this will remove the android market from the phone/tablet.
But there would still be other ways to install apps, that would be just removing the most obvious
Hi all,
I am trying to write an app that requires the Android permission WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS which I know is only granted to system apps so I want to have my app push a second apk to /system/app and install after a reboot (via "su" so I understand device will need to be rooted). I can get the apk into /system/app and install fine. Then I use my first app to send messages to the helper that can use
Code:
Settings.Secure.putInt()
because the helper is a system app, which is how I imagine the excellent app Secure Settings does it.
The problem I have is that when the helper tries to call
Code:
Settings.Secure.putInt()
it crashes and I see logs saying the permission WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS is not being given to my app (the helper).
Is it correct that only apk's signed with the system keys can have this permission? If I manage to sign my apk with these keys, will it work on any device from any manufacturer?
I'd love to know how Secure Settings does it and I've asked the devs, but I understand they wont want to give too much away.
Thanks
Got it working with using WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS and not needing signing with system keys.
Coming along fantastic now.
???
Can you tell us how you got it working? I'm trying to turn airplane mode on and off, and need WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS to work on 4.2 and above.

As you may know, Google has remove App Ops on Android 4.4.2. This app helps you to bring it back
Root device only for now
What is App Ops
App Ops is an activity, within the Settings app, that allows users to enable or disable operations on a per-app basis. These operations cover many common scenarios identified by permissions (e.g., read contacts, write contacts, access location), though it is not a pure one-to-one mapping.
Operations blocked by App Ops are inaccessible by the affected app, though that may vary by device.
Toggle-able permissions
- Access notifications
- Alarm volume
- Audio focus
- Bluetooth volume
- Call phone
- Camera
- Draw on top
- Keep awake
- Location
- Master volume
- Media buttons
- Media volume
- Modify calendar
- Modify call log
- Modify clipboard
- Modify contacts
- Modify settings
- Notification volume
- Play audio
- Post notification
- Read calendar
- Read call log
- Read clipboard
- Read contacts
- Read SMS/MMS
- Receive SMS/MMS
- Record audio
- Ring volume
- Send SMS/MMS
- Vibrate
- Voice volume
- Write SMS/MMS

Ver 1.0
- Initial release
It's weird that this thread has no activity.. it's a proper mod tbh.
After clicking to "Install AppOps Root", the device reboots, but nothing seems to change. Starting the Installer again still shows the same message: "Click to install AppOps Root..."
If I click "Launch Stock App Ops", I see Settings that promptly closes.
I am rooted and running a 4.4.2 ROM.
What am I missing?
App is working great. But can you please change the Icon in the drawer? It is really hard to see with this dark grey color

Not for me.
I have run through installation twice and didn't see any errors.
I just got prompted to d/l new firmware for my note 3 today. and after hearing they took this out. I declined it! keeping an eye on this, hopefully there will be a way to bring this back for non rooted devices. as my phone is only 2 months old. and I wana wait 4-6 months to make sure its not faulty B4 I go rooting it. plus there arent enough stable ROMS for note 3 anyway. I like Wanam as its stock ish without bloat. so waiting for wanam!
Reboot after install
Im using CM11.0 and the phone reboots after I click "Install AppOps Root" but seems to work fine with the "Lauch Stock AppOps" option.
Good job. Thank you.
Works great for me running Stock 4.4.2 on Nexus 5.
Can i use this app with ART?

thanks developer
Awesome. I was looking for something like this.

It only installs one apk in /system/priv-app/
If you are rooted and have titanium backup or other toolbox you can easily uninstall it (titanium can uninstall system apps); second easiest option is to use ES File Explorer or other root file manager; other ways include adb shell commands (mount / rm), and finally another method that actually doesn't require root is via custom recovery that has a builtin file manager like twrp does... you would mount /system and delete the apk from /system/priv-app

Thanks have titanium backup installed, will just use that if I want to uninstall, good to know for other root apps that I might use in the future
:good:
How does this compare to the likes of XPrivacy. It appears this completely denies the permission which would cause certain apps to crash vs providing random false data.

XPrivacy is way more powerful and allows you to revoke many more permissions, but App Ops although limited, works quite well. You cannot remove network access with it, but I removed location, contacts, vibrate, camera, from some apps, and none crashed so far. I've been using App Ops since it was introduced in Jelly Bean, and still do in KitKat.

I still get a quick reboot and nothing else.
On 4.4.2, rooted and have given the app SuperUser privileges.

If it works, you should see a new app named "App Ops [Root]" in your app drawer. Anyway, which is your ROM?
Hello,
in times of Nexus5 and 4.4 I used the permission manager to set all permissions I want random apps to have.
I declined the gps access to my banking app (German Postbank app).
Then I updated to 4.4.2 and the permission manager app stopped working.
Today I found out that the banking app could show me the cashpoint next to me. Unfortunately the banking app still doesn't seem to be able to use gps.
How can I reactivate the permissions?
...this means the permission manager does still exist.

do a factory reset OR install Xposed framework and install the AppOps module and then change the permissions you want ( of course you have to be rooted to use Xposed). i don't think you have any other options.
p.s. questions should go in tht Q&A section
