I've been a long time user of the android camera app, touchwiz camera was downright amazing.
I recently flashed a cm10 based ROM and have been playing around with the camera and have some questions.
1. Do you need to tap the screen to focus every time you want to take a picture? My past cameras had the constant block of auto focus so you could just wait for the green and snap. Or does the tap focus only pertain to the spot you want to focus on?
2. Is there a macro mode?..perhaps this is 'flower' mode?
Finally...anyway to turn off the shutter sound other than silent mode? This ones not anything major I just figured I would ask. Thanks guys!

No, you don't need to tap the screen to focus every time. If you move around to different points in camera mode you'll see the screen zooming in and out to focus on the point in the center of the screen. I think the tap is to focus on a point off the center of the screen (taking a photo of someone while their not centered in the screen)
There is a macro mode. When you open the camera there's a settings button right next to the negative zoom slider. After that there's a 3 button settings right where you just clicked, and in there you'll find macro/burst, and all the other extras.
I haven't seen a shutter sound off option yet.
Thanks! I am still unable to find macro..I did find the burst shot which ranges from 5-20 shots. However I don't see macro listed. Maybe I'm just missing it. If you are able could you upload a screenshot of it please? Thanks again!

You're welcome. I can't make a screenshot whenever I try it says that my storage is in use (assuming because camera is open) but if you go into the settings like I described before... the 4th one down gives you "focus mode" that's set to continuous.. click on that to the right and you'll find macro in there.

The AOSP camera is definitely lacking compared to the TW one.
That being said here is an ongoing project to add more features to the AOSP camera in order to make it closer to TW:

I do miss the TW camera, but camera isn't a deal breaker for me to remain on TW... I see more benefits using aosp instead.
Thanks for the link, I'll be sure to bookmark it and check back periodically to see if there's improvements. I see in screenshots its able to store on extsdcard which is nice.
You can easily get rid of camera sounds renaming the sound files from CM -> media -> audio -> ui
just rename the camera files and video files with ending .bak and reboot your phone. After every update you have to do it again.
Camera issue:
Camera's exposure drastically reduces whenever a 3rd party app tries to access camera.. The screen becomes almost dark whenever taking photos indoor
It got fixed in camera zoom fx by turning on anti banding.. But it's not a permanent solution..
To add, there's too much grains while capturing photos indoor and in little low light.
Headphone issues:
Not all headphones work with it..
I tried Samsung in-ear headphone it doesn't work properly.
Tried auxiliary cable, it worked but feel like there's some sound quality loss..
There was a little volume loss in my Sony Walkman headphone..
Heating issue:
I didn't face any excess of heat during normal usage or while playing games.. Little heating while running apps which utilizes CPU and GPU extensively is inevitable.
Although there's a lot of heat emitted by the CHARGER while charging.
Other issues:
Why did xolo hide all the developer options?!! there's a way to get in but I feel too lazy!
There's no expandable volume control panel.
If pattern lock or password or pin is selected then the slide unlock ring is not visible, it directly asks for pin or password whenever screen is turned on.
Can't enter into specific settings after holding on the quick toggles in status bar. Neither there is an option to customize the toggle buttons. It would have been more convenient.
In any profile except general, one cannot activate vibrate on touching the soft keys, it gets disabled automatically whenever volume is reduced to 0 or to vibrate, as it selects silent or meeting profile respectively.
Stick cricket premier league lags a lot, no idea why!
Real football crashes in menu after selecting the team jersey. Maybe because my sd card is slow.
Real boxing didn't work for me.
Tried Photoshop touch, but it stops as soon as I open it.
Asphalt 7 lags while racing, again maybe because of the slow sd card, although I have a class 4, it's r/w speed has drastically reduced.
Remarks:
Although i used it only for few days I can say it is the best phone available in it's price range if photography is not your buying point. I heard xolo is shipping m-type processors with this phone now, which would be a huge let down.
The phone looks and feels good, good built quality, good screen with great viewing angles.
Handles games like dead trigger without any issues.
4000+ in quadrant benchmark
54.9 fps in nenamark 2
Around 13000 in antutu.
Do post solutions and any other issues faced by you

Just got an easier method to enter developer options..
Download apex or nova launcher (tested on these two).
On home screen long tap to add shortcut or widgets, on that list search for settings then look for developer options and add it.
You can have access to whole developer options!

The camera issues are fixed in custom Roms that's what I read everywhere..
Camera fv-5 worked well but with same issues.. Changing the iso does the job..

The service center says its your piece not any other phone.. is that TRUE ???

2. I am having this very weird issue with facebook .. for some time now..
The Facebook loads on wifi but no photos load...
I can load everything fine on 3g/ Data ,, but very difficult to load on WIFI..... i have to literllally do a compete reset..
but the problem starts immidietly... nothing changes ... i clear data... clear cache.. app kill etc..
but i cant make it work...

3. About heating on charging .. i never use the original charger after i found this issue.. and started using Samsung S3 charger and there were no heating on charging... i think the charger which was supplied does not cut off..

Good Review...But..
Hello....You have well specified all the bugs in the stock ROM. But this phone is with nearly no bloatware and good performance.To get rid of all this bugs there are number of stable and cool ROM`s available for our device such as Nexus Redefined and Xololiquid. Overall I think it`s the GOOD phone in that price segment and it could be the best if camera quality is improved.
The point of the topic:
Post your issues found in STOCK / CM11 or post a solution.Simple as that,very productive.
I'll start with a list of bugs:
CM11 ISSUES:
-Video recording lags in reduced luminosity.
-The phone heats too much when playing/watch videos for long time and so on.
-Volume during call is too low.
-Ocasionally freezes & crashes.
-Some graphical issues when the phone freezes.
-Wifi MAC Address is always 00:0a:f5:89:89:ff.
If there are 2 Xperia L using CM11 / Custom Kernel connected to the same wifi, both connections will be dropped.
STOCK ISSUES:
-Video blinks in low light(from what I've read it focuses wrong on the light source and starts blinking).
-The proximity sensor remains on after a missed call.
-Multi touch doesn't work as well as on CM11.
-Some weird freezes during call ( the screen remains off / freezes and you can't end the call / sometimes even answer )
-Camera doesn't have as much detail as in CM11 ( if you zoom in,the image doesn't clarify).
-Wifi MAC Address is always 00:0a:f5:89:89:ff.
If there are 2 Xperia L using CM11 / Custom Kernel connected to the same wifi, both connections will be dropped.
CM11 FIXES:
-Lag in video recording can be reduced by lowering the exposure.In medium to low light " - 1 " works pretty good and in very low to low light " - 2 " .However,when you use " - 2 " ,the recorded video will be very dark.Still haven't found a solution for this.
-About heating problem,you might want to try @Shivam Kuchhal 's kernel.He reported that his phone doesn't get heat up more than normal.
-About volume during call,it's been solved partially in newer releases by editing snd_soc_msm file.However,if the value is too high,the phne volume will also be too high and the speaker will produce distorsioned sound.However,I see they found a resonable value and both,the volume during call & speaker is about fine.
-For headset buttons not working,you must edit Generic.kl file.Here's a short tutorial to help you:
Go to: system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl and change as below
key 226 HEADSETHOOK
key 256 BUTTON_1
change to
key 226 BUTTON_1
key 256 HEADSETHOOK
STOCK FIXES:
-For proximity sensor and weird freezes during a call use this tutorial .Haven't tested it personally,but people reported it works even on latest .17 fw.
-For Mac issue [ works for cm11 as well ]

Open /data/etc/wlan_macaddr0
Copy it's content. Ex: 01:12:13:14:15:16
Open /etc/firmware/wlan/prima/WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini
Find this line

Replace 000AF58989FF with the content of wlan_macaddr0, but write back to front. Ex: from 01:12:13:14:15:16, write to 161514131201. So it will look like this

Proximity fix not working!!!
More Kitkat Bugs List:-
1. Headset buttons
2. Camera experiencing crashes randomly, sometimes cause overexposure and being unstable at flash mode
3. Black graphical glitch/scanning effect first time after you turn your screen off then on again after first restart/turning on phone.
4. Call bugs(e.g. distortion etc.)
5. Lag when using the video camera
6. battery draining faster then on stock rom. (was improved on early nightly releases....now its back again)
7. GPS not working again (for some it does...others it doesnt....again...wasnt there on first nightlies)(Mostly Happens In CM11)
8. Camera quality is much,much worse then on stock rom
9 . Phone may left hanging and screen wont turn on for several seconds...
10. Some apps are unsupported on playstore...
CM11 bugs
CM11:
1. Switch to HDR mode and within 3 snaps camera app will FC.
2. Headset buttons.. I have to manually edit that Generic.kl after every nightly update.
3. As mentioned above, graphical glitch after updates.
Some of bugs that u mentioned @David pro has been fixed by users, but device maintainer didn't merged it for some reason in official builds. So, get started:
1. These buttons can be fixed, someone(I don't remember who, Sorry) has created a modified Generic.kl. You can find that file somewhere on this forum.
2. Camera quality is medium, but videos are very poor..

6. Caused by Google Play Services, 1st method is use xposed Framework and one of its add-ons, 2nd is just disable Services from Settings>Apps(i'm using second one, because I just don't like Xposed)

10.Well, some of them are only for one platform or type of devices,eg. Tegra 4 games.
No heating issues noticed so far(I use my kernel obviously) and yeah the camera and video quality isn't anything worth praising. Also the hwcomposer issue happens only one time after every boot, after that its all fine.
I normally use AOSPA.
Actually,I think the cm11 camera takes better photos than stock,but it can be buggy sometimes :silly:
About GPS,it's working fine for me too.
About video camera being laggy...I think it's because our phone lacks drivers update.It's hard to believe the video camera will ever be 100% fixed.

Haven't experienced those kind of issues when I used stock.Try to do a factory reset or flash the ftf again.Maybe you added some mods or apps which affected the system.
Overall,we have to admit that CM11 is blazing fast and that's why I'm still using it.I'll update the OP now with your solutions.Thanks guys and keep helping eachother.

another BUG with the stock ROM
1)walkman app flickers in the widget lockscreen
2)poor memory management need to restart the phone daily else the phone lags like a hell
3)camera app didn't respond ,it doesn't even the focus sometimes ,clearing the app data solves this problem temporarily and i think it was not present with the .12 update ,so if anybody could extract the camera app from the .12 update similar to the phone app freeze issue the problem might be solved.
3)walkman app or any other music player makes music to stutter when the same song is played more than one time provided if the songs are stored in memory card also i know that my sdcard doesn't have any problem because it worked fine with galaxy s3.my sd card is sandisk ultra class 10 32 gb
4)battery drain heavy when wifi is switched on compared to previous android 4.1.2
note:i have not rooted my phone or modded my firmware .all i run is the apps taken from the playstore.i have done a factory reset for more than 4 times.

guys please try to solve the issues with stock ROM because they are the stable ones and the bugs are easily repairable if the bugs are reached to right hands.so pls first concentrate on stock ROM
I've been playing around with 4.4 video recording..what i think is the lags occurs when we record in low lights related with the kernel..i'm testing with snapcam as its has auto flash when recording in low lights..First result is same as stock..but in snapcam it has touch to focus when recording..after touch,the recording will get a bit darker when it refocus and walla..no lags..
What i found is, the camera will automatically reduced the exposure to -1 for avoiding the lags even it is on default setting..
When moving the camera in low lights,the recording will lags again after few second..that is with continuous focus..set to normal or auto..no lags..so our stock cam using continuous focus for recording..
Back to the kernel thing..from what i see from the recording is same like this when i'm playing with cnt rom to to get wifi and overclock working.
Ok,so I went back to stock.I'm amazed by the battery life,it lasted 2 days and I used the phone a lot ( especially for calls ).
However,after using the fix for freezes during call and so on,I still have experienced this morning an issue.While I was talking to someone,someone else called and the phone was beeping but the screen was frozen.I had to press the power button to lock the device then unlock it to get the screen to show who's calling and to give me the possibility to answer the call.What do you think I should do?For now I'll wipe phone app data,but I'm also waiting if someone knows a good,another solution to post.
Anyone know a way to remove the automatic shutdown?

As you can watch this video, it takes forever for the camera to take pic and then processing it..
If I close the camera app before it thumbnail goes to the top right corner, it seems to just delete itself..
BTW, Im on CM11s rom, running franco kernel, in case anyone wants to know...

You're using HDR mode that complies multiple exposure settings to get you the best pic. It's always slower than non HDR mode.
That looks horrible.
HDR mode on my nexus 4 works a lot faster.

First pic was in auto mode.. you can see after I focused on the car, I hit the shutter button... 3 secs later, sound and then another 7 secs later the pic gets taken.. I then swiped to the different scene modes
but regardless which scene mode, does the same thing... really annoying.. tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times but same thing...
not sure if theres a similar topic, but Ive noticed an issue with saving photos after they are taken, it takes couple minutes or more for them to show in gallery.
if I take a photo, and go out of the camera app and enter gallery, the most recent photos wont show.
But if I go back to camera app and swipe right, it will show them there.. wth?!

Since I've installed the latest version of XtreStroLite, I don't know if it is linked or not but now when I start the Camera I have some issue sometimes with the focus and the camera keeps trying to focus continiusly so it makes a lot of noise and the camera is unusable! I have to kill the task and start it again and sometimes after 3-4 tries it works.
Since then I've installed Axis 2 and installed Adam kernel. This issue seems to be fixed but sometimes here and there I still got this issue. (Maybe once every day)
Any idea? Is it linked to the custom firmware or hardware issues?

When I star the camera it makes some noise. Like moving parts on a normal camera . A rather worring noise.
If I have the camera app open and if I tap near the camera lens the noise reproduces .
I have all normal no root nothing . Done several resets.
